How tough has the Cannes Film Festival marketplace been for domestic acquisitions? The deal of the day so far is Magnet Releasing’s U.S. rights acquisition of Rubber, the Cannes Critic’s Week offering about a psychopathic car tire with telepathic powers named Robert. It would be tempting to call the market flat or tired. Too easy. Here’s the teaser trailer:
RUBBER TEASER 1 ! from oizo mr on Vimeo.

Scanners starring the Michelin Man???
is this serious? (checks calendar… nope, not April 1st.)
This was made by the guys in the band Justice. Will probably have a cult following as those dudes have a huge following.
Not true. Augé and de Rosnay were only involved in the music. Mr. Oizo/Quentin Dupieux, another musician/producer on Banger Records, is the writer-director of Rubber. While he has his own following, he’s nowhere near as huge as Jusice. All this aside, the film looks interesting.
Actually, to correct both of you and to be a stickler. All three artists are on ‘Ed’ Banger Records, managed by Pedro Winter (Busy P) of Daft Punk management fame. Also, Quentin has produced several other short films and commercials, “Steak” and the Flat Eric ads so he’s no novice to the film world, in fact he started out as a filmmaker whilst he was progressing in filmmaking.
I’d say Mr. Oizo has a slightly different following, albiet not as large as the Justice or Daft Punk crowd, but will probably appeal to a more intelligent following. Not having seen “Rubber” I can only assume it will be as zany and artistic as his other work and will probably garner a large cult following; smart move on Magnet’s part.
*edit i mean’t while he was progressing in music.
Xavier wasn’t involved in this. He doesn’t make any of the Justice music anyways, only DJs. Gaspirator is the only other half of the composition duo besides the director, who also partly composed the OST.
It was only Gaspard Augé from Justice who made the music together with Quentin Dupieux (mr. oizo). Xavier de Rosnay was not involved.
It’s actually by Mr. Oizo, or Quentin Dupieux who has nothing to do with Justice other then the fact that they both make electronic music, and have played a few gigs together. Cult following of this type of movie? Probably not.
I saw this film and it’s a weird, ‘knowing’, nod-and-a-wink Euro thing. It’s not exactly a horror film though, by any means, so it will be interesting to see how Magnet market it. If anything, Rubber (will it keep that title for the U.S., I wonder?) is a very, very long short, coming it at, I think, around 89 minutes. Technically, it’s excellently done but doesn’t have any story and is not meant to. Now I had this toaster one time, and let me tell you, that was an evil *******!
I might be high but this actually looks really interesting and well done. Something different for sure. Wonder if it’ll hold any water and actually be entertaining.
Does Spike’s Ikea lamp make a cameo?
One director named “Quentin” is enough for all time.
saw it in cannes!
> incredible. this guy is talented
