Will ABC Pick Up ‘Old Christine’ or ‘The Ghost Whisperer’?
UPDATED: The network cleaned house this morning, pulling the plug on Cold Case, Numbers, The Ghost Whisperer and The New Adventures of Old Christine and Gary Unmarried as well as struggling freshmen Miami Medical and Accidentally on Purpose. As expected, it renewed Rules of Engagement and Medium.
While Cold Case and Numbers were pronounced dead weeks and even months ago (Numbers star Rob Morrow already has a new series, the new ABC legal drama The Whole Truth) and newcomers Miami Medical and Accidentally on Purpose had virtually no chance to continue, the decision on Old Christine and Ghost Whisperer came down to the wire. In both cases it was reportedly based on financials. Old Christine‘s producer Warner Bros. TV has also been talking to ABC about potentially taking over the veteran sitcom.

What about OPEN BOOKS? Any truth to the rumors that it’s shitting the bed?
I love “The Medium.” I am so glad that it will be running again. Despite the family’s bizare talents-I love the middle class family circumstances and the family dynamics. Thanks CBS!!
I love Medium too! So glad it didn’t get cancelled. (And Nellie…YOUR comment about Medium bored ME)
Should keep Miami Medical. It is far better than most of what other medical shows are on TV. Good interaction between characters and the actors are good. It did not have a change being on Friday night at 10 PM.
Not unexpected moves, however, CBS really needs to start nurturing their new crop a bit better. That’s one thing they were not very good at this year. They had the development, for the most part they had pieces to work with. What I saw – the network was a bit more trigger happy then they have been in the past, a bit less supportive, and even less experimental — with time slots. Something was a miss this year. Someone will dig up what it was because they didn’t seem like themselves with their moves (not their product), their moves. With their new 09-10 product, they were clearly trying to try “different” things but unwilling to stay the course during rough waters. One wonders if Les was finally less involved or more this year. That’d be interesting to know. As everyone knows, in years past he’s been all over everyone, more so then anyone in his type of role (I know it drives some crazy, I always thought it was great and why not? He knows what he’s doing). Last year it sounded like he took a step back a bit more. This year, haven’t paid attention nor cared to ask anyone at CBS.
i agree — Miami Medical is the best new hospital drama for several years. characters are great, stories are actually about people and not procedures, tho there’s plenty of procedures to keep the blood flowing and the heart monitor dropping. what a major drag not to give this a chance. boo
Absolutely should not have been cancelled. Great characters, intriguing episodes.
The ball’s in your court ABC.
Now this is Exciting news!
Wasn’t ‘The Ghost Whisperer’ a sure renewal?! And ‘Christine’….
The Big news obviously is if ABC will pick the 2 shows. The other cancellations are hardly a suprise.
Friday nights will be interesting next season with all networks having (mostly) new line-ups on the night.
The CW would be really really really smart to pick up GW ASAP.
CBS…. way to take a Great series( COLD CASE) and make its Fans HATE YOUR NETWORK…. Loved the way you wrapped up the story lines ….. Guess I’ll start watching NBC again … CBS YOU SUCK
Chill out Larry.
You made a LOT of mistakes CBS. I hope they haunt you.
i am so irked they cancelled “cold case” i will really miss that show!! i loved kathryn morris as rush. i hope she finds another show to star in.
I mentioned Miami Medical was dead in a post last night, and now it’s gone? What’s the deal?
now I guess its jut a case of moving things around, to work out how best to launch the new show, and making the now empty Wednesday comedy block solid.
It’s a shitty week for Wanda Sykes.
I hope ABC picks up Old Christine. It would be a good match with Cougar Town. I actually get the impression from ABC’s schedule that they were actually approaching the fall schedule with the full expectation that their new shows were going to fail, because it seems like they saved some of the more promising ones for mid-season.
I’m quite surprised at the cancelling of ‘New Adventures of Old Christine’! Was one of the highlights of T.V. viewing for me. Possibly the goofy title was to blame? Because the entire cast was absolutely brillant, and gave me much needed comic relief. I even enjoyed the way the story lines would change each season. I think this was a big mistake on ABC’s part.
NBC should pick up Cold Case. They place it on Monday at 8 to give a decent lead in to The Event. Chuck can wait until mid season. Chuck will not be able to kick off the night…just look at last nights results. Chuck could work on Sundays at 8 after football.
Really disappointed Cold Case and Numb3rs was cancelled. At least Numb3rs was wrapped up nicely, Cold Case was too but what an incredible show to lose.
I agree re: the CW picking up Ghost Whisperer…..It would make a great companion to The Vampire Diaries on Thursdays, thus moving Supernatural (should it continue…) to Fridays for a whopper of a 1-2 punch w/Smallville….Suddenly the CW is in the game for 2 nights!!!!
I wonder if they’ll put one of the CSI spin offs in the Friday death zone to wither away, both had serious ratings and quality declines last season, especially Miami.
I don’t get it. CBS cancels a great TV show such as Cold Case, but renews a Zzzzz TV show such as Medium. Medium’s rating and demo 18-49 are not good, so low. I hope it gets axed this season. It has already cheated death twice.
Wasn’t Ghost Whisperer a sure-fire, knock out, “yes”, season renewal???
Can’t believe they dropped “Old Christine” and kept that piece-of-shit “Rules of Engagement.” That is one of the worst shows on TV!
Ummm, no it isn’t. Rules is the BEST comedy out there.
I am so sad to see Old Christine cancelled….Pretty unbelievable!
I’m hearing that Good Wife may stay on Tuesday contrary to speculation that its move to Friday is a done deal. CBS has tremendous faith in this show and will NOT give it a death slot.
Wow! just when I found a medical show that I really liked (Miami Medical) it was as good as ER. I guess CBS is just happy with small sitcoms and day time drama shows. Get some back bone and take a chance on a good shows.
I wouldn’t be too surprised if NBC picks-up “Cold Case” for January, 2011.
So they’re basically rebuilding their Friday nights, even though they were doing well with GW, Medium, and Numbers at the beginning of the season. I wonder if they’ll give up on the Wed comedies and just schedule the CM spin-off in that timeslot.
This is great news on the CXL front for that horrible Elfman and Dreyfuss show respectively. BRAVO CBS! A job well done and it looks like ABC is passing on GW and Old Christine too. Even better!
Once again the pure cluelessness and just plain stupidity of television executives is displayed. I haven’t watched a single medical drama since ER went off the deep end of character torturing soap opera stuff instead of the character driven quality drama that it began with. After all these years of ignoring the genre, CBS picks up this amazing, character driven drama, with characters I actually care to follow and get invested in and they stick it in the late Friday slot, the place most smart studios put older series that are in a death spiral to finish their swan songs and then cancel it because it didn’t do gangbusters in the ratings. I am SO sick and tired of seeing some of the best writing, acting and production in the industry get hosed because of this sort of stupidity. I really wish that this gem of a series would get a second chance by another network, maybe one of the cable networks that seem to know how to nurture their properties instead of adding arsenic to their soup and then acting shocked and dismayed when they wither and die.
Each season as I watch this happen again and again I find myself less and less interested in even trying to get interested in the crop of new series. Some of this season’s sound extremely interesting, but I’ve been burned again and again watching trash reality drivel get prime slots while quality drama and comedy gets stuck in the leftover slots to die. Why shhould I waste the time and energy to get interested and involved in all of these new series when I know that most of the best will either die quickly like Miami Medical or get jerked around and killed off just as they really start to get interesting like the recently deceased Sarah Connors Chronicles?
Re: Ghost Whisperer…Did anyone hear James Van Praagh on CoasttoCoastAM with George Noory last night commenting that Jennifer Love H. is “done with the show and wants to move on to other things”?
CBS really f*cked up with Miami Medical. Friday night at 10pm?! It never stood a chance!
Attention CBS: “Rules of Engagement” has just been re-upped. Please take a moment to change the name of the show back to what it was last known as, “Yes, Dear.”
