With the pickup of two new comedies, Mike & Molly and Bleep My Dad Says yesterday, the closing of the deal with Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen last night, and today’s renewal of Rules of Engagement (its pickup contractually had to be a full season), CBS’ comedy pieces on the fall schedule become clearer. Once again, the network is going with 6 comedies: How I Met Your Mother, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, Rules Of Engagement, Mike & Molly and Bleep My Dad Says.
CBS is under deep lockdown, so this has not been corroborated with network sources. And I generally don’t post stories that are based on pure speculation rather than reporting. But this educated guess for CBS’ comedy scheduling plans by an industry insider is pretty darn good, so I’ll share it with you. Take it with as big a grain of salt as you wish:
Monday:
8:00 The Big Bang Theory
8:30 Mike & Molly
9:00 Two And a Half Men
9:30 Bleep My Dad Says
Wednesday
8:00 How I Met Your Mother
8:30 Rules Of Engagement
What do you think? Have a better sked?
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

I think this would be stupid on CBS’ part. They should do the following:
Monday
8:00 Rules of Engagement
8:30 Mike & Molly
9:00 Two and a half men
9:30 BBT
Wednesday
8:00 HIMYM
8:30 Bleep my dad says
If that is the schedule than CBS is going all out to win the demo on Mondays and I applaud them for that.
However, on Wednesdays HIMYM and ROE are going to die on a vine in that slot. Sunday would make more sense due to the football overruns in the fall and program a drama in the 8 slot. For whatever reason, no matter what comedy they schedule in that hour, the numbers tend to be weak. It’s not like the non-Chuck Lorre shows are ratings juggernauts to begin with.
Just my two cents.
I think they’ll probably keep HIMYM at the Monday time slot, if only because that bracket is doing so well. Besides that…
I cannot believe we live in a world with an hour and a half of Chuck Lorre programming. Big effing sigh…
Big Bang Theory should take over for Two and a Half Men as the anchor, it’s drawing in the big demos now. Plus, if they want to get serious with that Wednesday block, they should do:
MONDAY
How I Met Your Mother
Rules Of Engagement
The Big Bang Theory
Mike & Molly
WEDNESDAY
Two And A Half Men
Shat My Dad Says
We knew something was up with the scheduling, as our DVR seems incapable of capturing a full episode of Two and a Half or Big Bang. I would think the media buyers would see through that immediately. Thanks for the great reporting.
This is what I was predicting, but with 2.5 Men and Big Bang swapped. BBT is not going to stay in the 5.0-6.0 rating area at 8 pm unfortunately, but it will help launch Mike & Molly.
Mondays:
8pm- How I Met Your Mother
830pm- Mike and Molly
9pm- Two and a Half Men
930pm- Rules of Engagement
Sundays:
8pm- The Big Bang Theory
830pm- Bleep My Dad Says
(CBS has tried unsuccessfully to launch comedy on Wednesdays for too many seasons. If you’re going to move BBT from the cozy post-2 1/2M timeslot, you might as well have it launch another night).
HIMYM needs to go… lets find out who already… its boring now. Disappointed about Christine cancellation. Not sure how I feel about Big Bang – annoyed its constantly moving, liked it at 930 but understand the obvious reasons
Looks good to me. ‘Bang’ may not get it’s 14Mil+ at 8pm but should do around 11 and that should give ‘M&M’ a great chance at success.
Plus the main competition here is just House.
The HIMYM & ‘Rules’ combo has worked well. Now, obviously the risk on Wednesdays remains how well ‘Undercovers’ does. And also if the same viewers on Mondays will follow the show to Wednesdays.
If i were a CBS honcho,I’d give the line-up a try though.
Does that mean Mad Love couldn’t lock down Lizzy?
um, i think you mean corroborated not collaborated?
Big bang and rules should go to Thursdays and survivor should go to wed.
Looks good. Taking 2 established shows and transplanting them to Wed makes more sense than transplanting 1 and trying to launch a new show behind it. Especially given how strong ABC’s comedies are that night.
I don’t get it. How could OPEN BOOKS not get picked up?
Think of everything it has going for it:
1. Takes place in the publishing industry (super-sexy concept)
2. A telegenic star beloved by middle America (Patti Lupone)
3. One of America’s greatest comic actresses (Aisha Tyler)
This could have been the funniest show since MR. RHODES!
Nellie, Interesting what you write that CBS follows through on a contracted, full season p/u of returning “Rules of Engagement.” How can ABC abort a full season of returning “Brothers & Sisters” mandating fewer episodes than the standard 22 to 25? Are penalties paid to the production company and allowances made to the regular cast? How many other returning series are receiving reduced orders (less than 22), and why the discrepancy(ies) in what would seem a standard procedure? I seem to recall back in the dark ages, the 1980s, the standard SAG agreement was that if a series regular’s deal guaranteed “all shows produced” that by the 3rd season the absolute minimum was 22. Otherwise, the production company and/or network had to pay the performer for the episodes less than 22 not filmed.
I’m a little disappointed that Accidentally on Purpose got cancelled instead of Rules of Engagement. The writing on Accidentally on Purpose got much better after the break, and the writing on Rules of Engagement got worse. I guess the Wednesday ratings for Accidentally on Purpose weren’t very good on Wednesdays.
Nellie, if this whole blogging breaking news thing doesn’t work out I think you have a future in programming. Looks spot on.
It’s a shame they’re dumping Accidentally on Purpose which was fresher and funnier than How I Met Your Mother last year and way smarter than wretched Rules of Engagement.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Jenna E, but AoP was never funny. Sorry. It just wasn’t….
Here’s my question:
By my count, CBS has ordered 6 new shows (totaling 5 hrs.) and renewed 17 (totaling 16 hrs.) Assuming they continue to go with 2 hrs. of repeats on Saturday, that means they’ve got 21 hours of shows for 20 hours of prime time. Are they really going to announce a full schedule at the upfront with only ONE HOUR of midseason programming ordered? That’s ballsy! Or stupid!
As far as CBS’s scheduling goes, im very curious to see where they put GOOD WIFE. I hope they make an effort to put it in a prime time slot for season 2. LOVE this show!
I don’t like HIMYM moving to a new night, especially matching up against ABC’s comedies now. I also kinda wish they’d put Bleep and HIMYM together in a block, since I don’t plan on watching the other cbs comedies.
Thank god they saved Two and a Half Men at the last minute. I feel like the story really needs a few more seasons to play out properly.
Will Charlie Sheen’s character sleep with more women? Will the half man ever get promoted to three fourths? These are important questions.
I hope CBS does not move HIMYM to another night for what will probably be its final season.
I would rather see CBS do what ABC and NBC have already announced: one night of comedies, including 3 returning shows and 1 new show, with several shows held back for mid-season.
I will guess you are right.
