When CBS’ scheduling guru Kelly Kahl introduced the new CBS schedule this morning by saying the network was going for “aggressive stability,” he was not kidding about the aggressive part. Who would’ve thought that CBS will be by far the most aggressive network this year in shaking up its fall schedule. The net is putting comedies on Thursdays for the first time in 45 years, moving Survivor to Wednesdays at 8 PM and the CSI spinoffs to Friday and Sunday.
At CBS’ press breakfast today, the network’s execs addressed the cancellation of seven series, including The New Adventures of Old Christine and Ghost Whisperer. Kelly was blunt: “To make your schedule stronger, it means clearing the low-hanging fruit. It’s part of the network circle of life.”
Other highlights from the breakfast:
On moving Big Bang to Thursday: “If you are walking on a new night of comedy, you go with the big guns,” Kahl said. Added entertainment president Nina Tassler: “How great is it for the guys from The Big Bang Theory to lead into William Shatner,” a reference to Shatner’s Star Trek pedigree. “It’s a dream come true.”
The rationale behind keeping Medium but not Ghost Whisperer on Fridays: It was the crime-solving element in Medium that would fit better the rest of the crime drama Friday lineup, Tassler said. (It also doesn’t hurt that Medium is wholly-owned by CBS.)
As he has done every year for the past 15 years, CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves kicked off the morning presentation. He gave this peek into the network’s afternoon upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall: “I’ll open with ‘I’m happy I’m not here selling One and a Half Men’,” he said.

Low hanging fruit? Whatever! Ghost Whisperer and Old Christine were both doing well, and have significant fanbases. Your new comedies will fail, CBS, and you’ll wish you still had Old Christine before too long.
You had a good thing going and you dropped the ball.
hey drew your vagina is showing…also “Old Christine” was a sucky show.
Drew dont be a hater. The BIG BANG move will probably be their biggest hit in a while on Thursdays, and since they were WINNING the night anyway, this will probably lead to the OLD CSI’s demise as well. Cause if BIG and BLEEP do well, expect them to expand to an entire of comedies, something that WEDNESDAY just never provided.
As for SURVIVOR moving to Wednesdays, when it is preempted EVERY YEAR for March Madness and sent to Wednesdays it ALWAYS wins it’s slot with the same amount of rating as on Thursday, so it will definitely win its slot especially since IDOL doesnt return until the SPRING & DANCING doesnt air on that night.
BTW: MEDIUM is better than GHOST WHISPERER.
Medium was A good show I liked it it was about solving crimes She would see things in dreams, but it has taken a twist now they talk to ghosts it’s like Ghost Whisperer now, one is enough. I love
Ghost Whisperer.
Low hanging fruit?! Cold Case had better demo 18-49 and ratings than Medium.
I might be crazy, but didn’t Ghost Whisperer pretty much always win its time slot???..not sure why they cancelled it.
Still no Chaos? Come on CBS pick it up. Anyone know if there is still a shot for it?
All this says to me is that DVR’s that allow for recording of up to four shows at once will be in demand come fall.
Soon both Young and the Restless Cancellation will be announced after the upfronts as CBS is giving up all soap operas.
Thirty years ago, ABC got cocky one year and cancelled every show on their slate that didn’t have a 30 share.
Could this be a redux with CBS 2010? They dumped solid (though declining) performers, instead of signing them for limited episodes as backups.
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, GARY UNMARRIED, and CHRISTINE seem interchangeable to me, as I watch none of them. But they have their own fan bases. I can’t see why CBS wouldn’t sign GARY or CHRISTINE for 13 backup episodes if they have problems with their new Thursday night comedy block.
Unless CBS has some syndication stake in GHOST WHISPERER, I can’t see why they wouldn’t play the same hand with that series. I don’t think it had more than one season of life left, but I thought the same thing about MEDIUM last year.
Surprised they axed Ghost Whisperer. I thought it was doing well for a Friday show.
biggest mistake is canceling Ghost Whisperer.
can a cable newtwork could step in and pick up G.W. ?
I’ll miss Big Bang Theory, cause I enjoyed it on mondays but I won’t miss Vampire Diaries for anything so BBT loses till they move it back.
CBS droped shows based on raitings, demos and cost.
The problem is even CBS’ lowest rating shows were doing better than most of the shows on FOX,NBC and ABC!
I may not totally agree with the cancelation of NUMB3RS (They owned the show, the could have trimed costs and moved it to another night) I’m sure with the falure of MIAMI MEDICAL they wished they had those 6 episodes they cut!
I think overall, CBS is doing the right thing. I’d love to see an eventual 2-hour block of Comedy on Thursday Night. (I’m sure Chuck Lorre has another sitcom in him!) There was a time CBS was #1 in comedy – heck, for most of the network’s 45 years in Television they’ve been #1 in comedy!
The new comedy Mike and Molly is a Chuck Lorre show
Very Smart Thursday line-up, should have both NBC and ABC concerned. CBS can afford to make these moves. Watch for FIVE-0 as the next hit.
I think I’m with MrJeff on this one. Having say, Cold Case and Numb3rs on limited episode runs (as midseason backups) might have made sense.
But what do we here know?
I don’t see CBS cancelling The Young and The Restless any time soon… I thought it was time for Ghost Whisper to go (in fact I thought this a while back). Now I don’t have to suffer through it while my wife watches it
