EXCLUSIVE: I’ve heard a lot of chatter over the past 24 hours that CBS has picked up pilot Chaos to series. The truth is, the network indeed has given a midseason order to the CIA drama but that doesn’t mean the show will make it to the air. Because I hear CBS has handed out a partial 8-episode order instead of the standard 13-episode to producer 20th TV and the studio has not accepted it. Talks between the two sides continue but it is not clear whether they would be able to come to an agreement. Meanwhile, I also hear that, in ordering Chaos, CBS has passed on its other midseason contender, the John Wells-produced medical drama pilot Gimme Shelter. However, given the fluid situation with Chaos, the network may revisit the pilot from Warner Bros. TV. I hear Gimme Shelter creator Hannah Shakespeare has already signed on to join another WBTV project, new ABC drama series The Whole Truth, though she remains in first position on Gimme Shelter.
For networks, the issue often comes down to limited shelf space in midseason that triggers partial orders. But, with the steep production costs for drama series these days, it’s crucial for studios deficit financing new drama series to secure international sales, and they can only do that with a full 13-episode order. That’s why the size of midseason orders is often a bone a contention between non-vertically integrated networks and studios. Last year, both Warner Bros. TV and 20th TV got into a standoff with ABC over their drama pilots V and The Deep End, respectively. Neither studio agreed to the network’s offer for a partial midseason order and ABC eventually upped both pickups to 13 episodes (it later reduced the order for The Deep End to 6)
Chaos, written by Tom Spezialy and directed by Brett Ratner, revolves around rogue CIA operatives who combat bureaucratic gridlock, rampant incompetence and political infighting. The cast includes Freddy Rodriguez, Eric Close, James Murray, Tim Blake Nelson and Carmen Ejogo.
On the comedy side at CBS, Mad Love is considered the front-runner for a midseason order, with Team Spitz having a minimal chance too and Livin’ On a Prayer not officially dead yet but pretty much over.

what is happening with larry charles’ “our show?”
I was disappointed ‘Chaos’ didn’t get a full season pick-up. I’m hoping both sides can come to an agreement because I miss not seeing Freddy Rodriguez on our screens.
Interesting. Keep us posted.
How disappointing. As if CBS needs to order yet another all-male, generic agency show.
OTOH, the John Wells pilot seemed to have a lot going for it — concept, casting, the re-entry of the John Wells team into the medical sphere — and I was looking forward to checking it out.
Chaos turned out really well.
Freddy’s fantastic and CBS would be foolish to lose this one.
The Wells pilot was more of the same, not even great casting can save it.
If it gets picked up, it will be lucky to last 3 episodes.
Conceptually speaking, it’s poorly timed.
Five years ago, that show would have been a HUGE hit!
Yeah, and the John Wells pilot was more timely too. I mean, I’m kind of sick to death of “spy” shows. Enough is enough. Let’s see something new. Haven’t read the pilot, but know that Shakespeare works with the organization (Remote Area Medical) she wrote the pilot about, so she’s got some first hand stories. The organization was all over the news last year, tapping into some real questions about health care in the US. There’s enough testosterone-driven, gun-toting, chest-pounding material on TV already, let’s have some real story-telling for a change.
Plus it had SISSY SPACEK in the lead. Come on, CBS! What is your problem???
mad love! mad love! mad love!
Just give it a full season pickup already.
Chaos got a really great cast, besides a couple of upcoming HBO and AMC shows it is by far the new show I look forward to the most.
CBS has their head up their — you know what— when it comes to medical shows. Garbage like Three Rivers, Miami Medical makes it to the airwaves but they pass on The Eastmans and Gimme Shelter. But cop shows… like CBS needs another?
Can someone ask Nina if CBS trying to lose their entire female audience? Is this a mandate over there? It sure feels like it.
Wake up CBS. Your passing up a good show, with a lot of great stars. Like Sissy Spacek, Skeet Ulrich etc. We’re tired of the spy shows, & the dumb family shows. Give us something about real life, & issues.
Who wants to be reminded of real life? Besides, there are already too many of those type of shows. TV should be about escaping reality. Chaos would be perfect. Anyway, the Wells pilot tested really badly. It doesn’t matter who stars in it if the show stinks.
Um, the Wells pilot tested super high. Where did you hear is tested badly??? Please explain.
Basing a series on something that’s better suited as a 60 Minutes story was a bad idea in the first place. It’s no wonder it couldn’t get any traction. We’re drowning in health crisis and poverty issues on the news every day. Network has more than enough medical dramas as it is.
Bring on the comedies, the thrillers and some action.
CBS has a surefire hit with Mad Love! Pick it up already!!!
Good bones, good genealogy great talent…can’t miss with this show!
I was real excited about the Spacek and Ulrich show and I am not excited about anything else I am hearing about; I think it means a season of instant movies on the computer and no TV. Why on earth did I waste my money on a big new TV, I should have bought a big new computer for Netflix!
I was looking forward to the Wells drama, in theory —- though there is a saturation of medical shows on tv. The cast was compelling and deep, but the name is weak. RA.M. would be better ( Remote Area Medical ) or some kind of acronym like NCIS, CSI — very CBS-like. I hope they do eventually pick it up.
Speak for yourself when you say that CBS would lose its female audience by picking up CHAOS. Have you seen these men? Freddy Rodriguez, Eric Close, James Murray we’re talking serious eye candy
not to mention action, espionage and rogue CIA operatives. Medical shows are a dime a dozen but seriously when was the last time you saw a show about the CIA?
I totally agree with you. I really enjoy this show . I like to be entertained and please another medical/cop show seriously. I want to watch a zany fun show . I am getting to the point where I do not want to commit my time to any one show, how can you tell with only three episodes and the third one already changed to Sat night , way to kill a show CBS.
Not happy not happy at all. I am still pissed that Firefly was canceled.
Team Spitz has such a good cast and was genuinely funny! I really hope CBS doesn’t pass on this great show. It has so much potential and such great actors. I think they wanted the 2 1/2 Men slot but that show didn’t get canceled like they thought, but I do think CBS could have a hit with it. It would at least do well for the first season. Idk, I hope it gets the chance it deserves.
I agree, Nice, Team Spitz sounded really good. I’ve loved Rob Riggle for years and Eric’s Dad is great and the band teacher is awesome and come on, Sarah Chalke is so hot! Give it a second chance, CBS!
Go Team Spitz! I support Spitz!!
Really CBS??? How can you be so stupid. With already a boat load of crime and lawyer dramas, maybe you should of went with something new and exciting, the John Wells drama looked amazing and creative. I was really interested to see the spin they took on each different city that the group traveled too. Plus with Rachelle Lefevre I doubt it would of even been bad, she’s great. I hope CBS realizes how stupid they are being. Stop trying to recreate and add new twists to courtroom/ investigative dramas, its all been done. Really disappointed with CBS’s season picks this year.
CBS picks are awful. People do want medical. Look at HOUSE. No one knows how to spot them at CBS. The Eastmans tested super high. So did the Welles pilot. They passed on both for terrible shows — one that Jerry Bruckheimer pushed hard, “Miami Medical” and the Alex O’Loughlin piece of garbage “Three Rivers.” (Idea stolen from a screenwriting class at USC) Les is in LOVE with this O’Loughlin guy. Back Up Plan, Three Rivers, Hawaii Five-O… without Les and his man/boy crush this guy would be on the street.
Les is the decider and doesn’t know a good medical from a bad.
Any update on Chaos?
