EXCLUSIVE: Colin Farrell has stayed away from studio films in the last few years, but now has found two he can sink his teeth into. I’m told Farrell has just committed to next play a charismatic neighbor/vampire in Fright Night, the Craig Gillespie-directed DreamWorks remake of the 1985 thriller that will also star Anton Yelchin and Toni Collette.
He will follow that by playing one of the title characters in the Seth Gordon-directed New Line comedy Horrible Bosses. He chose those films as he was also being courted for the Katherine Heigl drama One for the Money, and the Reese Witherspoon comedy This Means War at Fox.
In Fright Night, he’ll play the role originated by Chris Sarandon, the charming bloodsucker who tries to cover his tracks when his young horror-film-fanatic neighbor become sure he’s a vampire come to drain the populace.
I can remember when the strong buzz off the Joel Schumacher-directed Tigerland convinced studios that the Irish actor was going to be the next Tom Cruise. The majors threw all kinds of projects at Farrell, with multi-million dollar offers. It wasn’t going at all well at the box office for Farrell by the time he did his last big studio film, Miami Vice with Universal. Let’s face it, he has had trouble opening movies for the majors. Since then, he embraced sobriety, turned his life around and has done the best work in his career on a mostly indie track. The exception was the Gavin O’Connor-directed Pride and Glory for New Line, and he has followed that with gems like Crazy Heart and In Bruges, the latter of which won him a Golden Globe. Farrell stays in indie mode on the Neil Jordan-directed fable Ondine, which opens June 4, and he stars with Keira Knightley in London Boulevard, the adaptation of the Ken Bruen novel that marks the directing debut of The Departed screenwriter William Monahan. Farrell most recently completed starring in the Peter Weir-directed period drama The Way Back, which will soon be shopped to domestic distributors and will likely premiere at one of the fall film festivals.
Now, he’s ready to jump back in with the studios.

Why in God’s name would he work with this director for fright night. No track record except he made some movies. I heard he doesnt want a production designer..he wants his friend to be a visual consultant–that should leave you hesitant to sign on.
He has done great work the last few years…and to jump into this
is Dreamworks opening up the cash register for some work later down the line…well that’s about it….VISUAL CONSULTANT remember that as an omen for a the eventual bomb
this is incorrect, there is a production designer, the celebrated richard bridgland
I can’t forgive him for ruining ‘The New World’. He was so bad, the director had to switch story lines just to get rid of his catatonic mumbling.
yes – I had to stop watching that movie. And I am a T. Malick fan.
Can this B.O. addled Monchichi stay away from the movies a little longer…please?
Any word on Ondine?
FRIGHT NIGHT…from the director of MR. WOODCOCK.
Opening at the Wal-Mart $5 DVD bin, summer 2011.
Gillespie also directed LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, one of the best films of the past few years. Colin was a fan and the two have discussed working together.
If this is the same guy from Lars and the Real Girl, count me in. Amazing movie.
Ryan should become a comedy writer. Funny post. Snarky as hell, but funny.
Yup…makes sense to me. Go off, do great work outside Hollywood, get respect again as an actor, and then come back and do crappy Hollywood products all over again.
Why oh why do people with talent, whether it be directors or actors, think that to do crappy Hollywood product – I won’t even call them films – is what one should do? It’s not. If you want money and celebrity, screw yourself and embrace hollywood. If you want to be an artist…stay the f%#K away.
people need to support their lavish lifestyles… or do you think that having a roof over their head and food in the fridge enough for our “stars”?
He was really good in Ondine, even managing a pretty good County Cork accent. I thought he had jumped the shark completely til he did In Bruges – coming off the drink obviously proved a charm!
I am a huge Fright night Fan…am against the remake- but this choice for Jerry Dandridge is pretty fair. I’m glad it wasn’t someone like Chris Evans or Dwayne Johnson.
He was so great in IN BRUGES — he should have not only gotten the golden globe but gotten as Oscar nomination as well. I was wondering why he hasn’t been doing any major studio projects.
“he embraced sobriety, turned his life around and done the best work in his career on a mostly indie track.” Nice turn around story. More should follow his lead. Young and famous a toxic mix for many. Good to see someone climbing out of that pit.
PRIDE AND GLORY was meh and had the box office to prove the opinion was shared….did 15 million domestically and another 15 international….was the final nail that made Warners step in and shut down New Line as an independent. He was solid In Bruges but it was tough buying him as a country music star in CRAZY Heart imo.
I don’t blame Colin at all for Miami Vice. I thought that while Foxx and Farrell did well, Mann did his usual strong directing – the script was boring as crap. Added to that was the fact that Mann’s gritty filming style was a complete contrast to what Miami Vice was all about – sharp, loud colors with a smooth, rich feel. In other words, it should have been filmed with the same high-price feel as Nip/Tuck.
Kind of slanted to write that Colin has “stayed away from studio movies in the last few years,” I think. Probably more accurate to state that, after demanding $15M-$20M paydays and producing flop after flop after flop (Pride & Glory, New World, Alexander, SWAT, Phone Booth, etc.), the studios decided he wasn’t a bankable star and they were the ones who stayed away from him.
HORRIBLE BOSSES is the funniest studio comedy in ages. Going to be hilarious.
Farrell will do fine. I prefer someone like him in a brand new vampire storyline with an R-rating, not a Disney-released PG-13 remake, but I think he’ll do the role justice. He can act, he’s funny and quite witty. I’m not mad, it’s Fright Night! Who would turn this ramake down? I loved this film and I’m not upset about it one bit. It’s clearly remake time so who can be shocked? I’m waiting till I watch it before I start hyperventilating about it.
He’s a solid character actor, just not a bonafide leading man IMO. Alexander-bad, Pride & Glory-bad, Miami Vice-bad, In Bruges-good. The Recruit, Crazy Heart, Phone Booth, SWAT were all pretty solid too.
I’m glad Colin Farrell is back because Colin Feral was a drag…
Colin Farrell made piles of cash from Hollywood, has the mansion etc.
He is set up for life, he doesn’t need to worry about studios and box-office. It’s all a load of bollix anyways. He also realized that his life was out of control with the booze, partying etc…he’s Irish, all Irish guys with money and looks are the same!! so fair play to him for sorting himself out…didn’t like him in crazy heart though.
