EXCLUSIVE: It’s the end of the road for Comedy Central’s The Sarah Silverman Program, which has been canceled after 3 seasons despite a Twitter campaign to save it. The show earned Silverman a lead actress Emmy nomination last year. But it also was on the brink of cancellation in 2009 when she and fellow executive producers Dan Sterling and Rob Schrab threatened to quit after the cable network asked them to slash the series’ budget by more than 20%. A last-minute deal with sister network Logo was reached to co-finance the series,
so a 10-episode third season was ordered. But midway through Season 3, which wrapped last month, the network bumped the series from 10:30 PM to midnight, hinting at its intention not to continue with Sarah. At the beginning of the year, Comedy Central went through a regime change, with former New Line executive Kent Alterman taking over for Lauren Corrao as head of original programming. Silverman, meanwhile, is keeping busy promoting her bestselling book The Bedwetter and signing on to co-star in the Sarah Polley movie Take This Waltz.

My favorite show, down the tubes.
SS is great, all you haters s u c k.
The fact that people feel so strongly about it only proves how great it was. She provokes something. You can let the discomfort turn into laughter (I do) or let it fester.
I do not like South Park, but I can’t imagine rejoicing that it’s gone.
Ok, “haters s u c k,” now back to your sophomore English class; turn off your cell phone, Ms. Atkins is watching you,
So this is what accomplished world travelers with doctorates do with their valuable time, insult people (badly) on obscure message boards. I don’t know what’s true about your background, but this sort of petty meanness is just sad.
Now we’re haters because we don’t think she’s funny. Name something YOU dont think is funny and then label YOURSELF a hater.
This was such a hipster “look how quirky and weird we are which must mean we’re brilliant” piece of garbage. The writers room must have been filled with the most insufferable people in L.A. But I suppose I’m happy for them, since it now allows them plenty of time to go hang out at each other’s houses, smoke pot all day, then head over to Intelligentsia in SIlverlake and do a little shopping at Kid Robot.
Now wait a MINUTE. I live in Silver Lake. Never even heard of “Intelligentsia” I assume it’s a shop. And “Kid Robot?” What is that? Shawn, I challenge you to a duel at the Coffee Table! Don’t pigeonhole us Silverlakians.
Sorry your career didn’t pan out.
Sarah a hipster, yeah not so much…
Kent Alterman is the enemy of funny.
As has been said, 3 seasons, usually 10 episodes each, is a typical lifespan of any Comedy Central show. Strangers With Candy. Upright Citizens Brigade. Drawn Together.
LOVED Sarah! This is sad news. I don’t understand the hate going on here…if you didn’t find her funny, just turn off the TV and go back to reading one of your 89 Family Circus compilations.
that’s exactly what i, and probably many others, did — turn off the TV. obviously, more of us turned the TV off than left it on, or CC wouldn’t have canceled the show. that’s just… simple math.
it’s not like anyone started some torch-and-pitchfork campaign to get rid of her show. we just changed the channel to look for something better, and the ratings reflected that.
…if you didn’t find her funny, just turn off the TV.
Great advice, seems everyone took it. Not so great for your beloved sarah.
Great show. Sarah is like Peewee Herman gone bad. Real bad!
For all its sometimes misfires, the show entertainment value far outshines 90% of what’s out there. Hope it can exist further in some form or another.
There is a clear male-female divide here…the guys don’t like a girl doing this sort of material!
Sorry to bust your theory but I’m a girl and I despised the show.
As Dorothy Sayers wrote, “Some people can be funny without being vulgar, and some can be both funny and vulgar. I should recommend you to be either the one or the other.”
Sorry to bust your theory but guys LOVE a girl doing “that” sort of material, preferably naked and in person – but it’s not funny on TV.
Brilliant show. If you don’t think it’s funny you’re simply stupid. You don’t get it. You probably like shows like Two and Half Men. All the greatest shows get canceled including Arrested Development. I’m really bummed out. My DVD list is getting smaller and smaller. Lame.
Your assumption that to not like SS’s insipid show means that one is a lowbrow “Everybody Loves Raymond” clone is way off.
I’m a fan of Extras, Curb, The Office (BBC version!), Christopher Guest films, etc.
This show wasn’t even in the same league. Made for high-school level.
Ugh.
I watch and enjoy every one of those shows, but except for Curb I wouldn’t consider them edgy. They are clever, but they don’t provoke. Some of us like to be provoked.
P.S. I would consider the Guest films lowbrow, though delightfully so.
Brilliant? You don’t get out much, do you?
Go for a walk or something, maybe it will unclog your brain so you can actually evaluate things without relegating disagreements to name calling. You make no point except that you have limitations. Serious ones.
So, all the REALLY funny people are in the unemployment line?
Why not just go don there when you need a chuckle?
Good.
Im sorry, but i have never found her or her show to be funny.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but myself,i could never see what others saw in her. How the hell she ever won awards is beyond me.
Oh, and “Ha ha. You have no power in the entertainment industry”. Nice anti-semitic comment, jerk.
How do you figure??
SS has never been funny. she’s another “genius” pushed down the audience’s throat by corporate america.
Sarah Silverman should bend over and kiss her ass goodbye. She is so over. Now maybe she can get over herself and get on with life.
I hate to see anyone lose their job but she is really unfunny.
Creates an opening for somebody with talent.
Not necessarily. This is Hollywood, after all.
I have always enjoyed Silverman’s brand of off-color humor, and I really wanted to show to succeed. It got off to a great start, but after a while, the show was far too one-note to be sustained any longer. I enjoyed some great laughs during the first couple of seasons, but this season was so painfully tired and unfunny that I stopped watching altogether.
I agree – I’m a total fan of Sarah Silverman (“Jesus Is Magic!” was pure brilliance) but this format was a waste of her talent. Too often ended up going for gross-out humor for its own sake. She will rise again.
And I’m a proud elitist!
I’m with Ryan: glad it’s gone. We need less cr*p on the airwaves.
Sarah fail. This is not surprising as the “Plebian pee pee poo poo” giggling masses generally abhor politically and socially poignant envelope elitists. Sarah sadly misses this distinction and her weekly attempt at mixing oil and water became tiresome to all.
Colleen, BENEATH THE HILARITY would be a great title for her Biography Channel special. And I’ll watch at least once anything she puts out.
This comment is pending approval and won’t be displayed until it is approved.
Jeez, I can sympathize with people who just didn’t care for this type of absurdist humor. Heck, I never got Dane Cook. But the level of dislike for her PERSONALLY is suprising.
Sarah Silverman played a lazy, selfish, annoying character who only managed to survive each episode due to the help of family, kindness of strangers and (sometimes literally) the Grace of God. It seems that a lot of viewers never understood that this was her CHARACTER. That was the joke.
But for anybody who likes wildly creative, topically aware, politically insensitive, Fourth Wall busting comedy with original music and live animation, this show was a vastly unappreciated gem. I suppose it’s your loss if you didn’t get it and my loss that it’s gone.
Go Robot Bastard!
I’d say the only problem with her show was….um….er…it wasn’t….um…funny. Surprised it lasted this long really.
It wasn’t my favorite show but it’s good compared to much else on Comedy Central. I’m not that big on shock humor, because really, anyone can do that, but whatever one calls her humor it’s unique to Silverman, it’s made me laugh and she deserves a show. She has a lot of great original ideas, such as her feed the hungry/sell the Vatican campaign.
They’ve been promoting the hell out of that new cartoon “Ugly Americans” and the show is way worse, in my opinion. I don’t see how this show will be a hit that my 20s-30year old friends will rave about. So many of my hip, savvy, funny friends love the Sarah Silverman show so I’m surprised it’s going away
That’s because there aren’t too many hip savvy people in the world…same reason country music out sells blues and jazz. Lol
I think Sarah’s really witty and funny, but this show was dreadfully directed with a very unfunny cast with skill levels of a high school drama class. I tried and tried to like it, but eventually realized it was just plain misguided.
Ugh, this woman is part of the Holy Trinity of Unfunny Women – Silverman, Kathy Griffin and Margaret Cho. What anyone finds interesting or funny about any of them is beyond me. I’ll take Joan Rivers any day – she is truly the Queen of Comedy. There hasn’t been a single joke she’s told that I haven’t laughed at and ONLY Joan knows how to do vulgarity right.
And she’s the only one who can tell a joke without moving her lips.
Too much botox and plastic surgery.
She’s the only one who can queef without moving her lips too.
REALLY? Joan Rivers?? What are you, 60? LOL she’s one of the most safe, vanilla, milktoast unfunny horrorshows ever on tv. Good god, and people say Nancy Pelosi has a scary face.
please don’t lump her in with margaret cho and kathy griffin, both of whom are extremely funny, and i would happily watch anyday over SS.
Couldnt have happened to a bigger whiny bitch. Dont let the door hit you on the way out you no talent POS.
Sarah is one of the most beautiful and funny women out there. Her humor is edgy and will not appeal to everyone. I do not think that she should try to appeal to everyone, then she would be Bob Hope. Funny maybe but seriously losing something in the process. I can not wait to see her again in whatever vehicle she chooses. Good luck Sarah.
I HEART Sarah Silverman. Put it on Logo or HBO. I’m gay and all my gay friends ADORE her!!! Canceling Silverman and the censorship of South Park is making me loathe “Comedy” Central.
And for all of you who think you are funny, I will paraphrase Sarah: “Why should a comedian take any advice from people whose job it is is to NOT be funny?”
She IS funny and has broken down many many many previously untouchable barriers.
Meant to say: For those of you who think she is NOT funny, I will paraphrase Sarah.
You guys wouldn’t know funny if it hit you in the ass. Just keep watching censored “family” and boring supposed comedies like the syndicated, “Everyone (not me) Loves Raymond.”
I like “unfriendly to children” comedy. Put your children to bed and THEN watch REAL comedy. I am SOOOO sick of kids running the country and controlling what *I* watch on TV. Damn breeders!
She can be terrifically witty. Watched the whole first season. But the second season, my boyfriend and I decided she was just too hard to take. The gross out stuff was just plain boring. She was just too mean. We agreed that she was great, but we just couldn’t take it.
P.S. Loved her in Aristocrats.
