For the first time in its history, the CW’s fall schedule won’t include series reruns, with fresh episodes
airing Monday through Friday. The schedule features two new series, Nikita and Hellcats, which are getting launching pads behind the network’s biggest hits: Nikita will air behind The Vampire Diaries on Thursday and Hellcats behind America’s Next Top Model on Wednesday. Other notable pairings next season include bubble series One Tree Hill and Life Unexpected, which for a while competed for one slot on the schedule before both getting last-minute reprieve. Now the two dramas will air together on Tuesday. And former long time night-mates on Thursday Smallville and Supernatural are back together, now on Friday, with CW officially announcing the upcoming 10th season of Smallville will be its last. The network labels its new Monday lineup as “the Left Coast/Right Coast pairing of 90210 and Gossip Girl”. Additionally, the network said it will launch new reality series Plain Jane in July and another new reality series, Shedding For The Wedding, in midseason.

HELLCATS is a coming-of-age story about Marti Perkins, a young, pre-law student at Lancer University inMemphis, Tennessee. Marti is cool, hip and alt, but her world flips upside down, literally and figuratively, when she loses her scholarship, and realizes the only way she can stay in school is by reigniting her dormant teen gymnastic skills to win a place on Lancer’s legendary cheerleading team, The Hellcats. Against her every instinct, Marti goes for it and makes the squad, and is thrust into a world of camaraderie, backstabbing and the intersection of sports, backroom academia and big money. Marti’s new roommate, Savannah Monroe, a petite, peppy Texan, is among the diverse cast of athletes, undergrads, family and friends, all set on the sprawling campus of a powerhouse college football program in the deep South. The series stars Aly Michalka as Marti Perkins, Ashley Tisdale as Savannah Monroe, Heather Hemmens as Alice Verdura, Robbie Jones as Lewis Flynn, Matt Barr as Dan Patch, with Sharon Leal as Vanessa Lodge and Gail O’Grady as Wanda Perkins. HELLCATS is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Tom Welling Productions, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Kevin Murphy (“Desperate Housewives”), Tom Welling (“Smallville”) and Allan Arkush (“Heroes,” “Crossing Jordan”). The pilot was directed by Allan Arkush.
NIKITA When she was a deeply troubled teenager, Nikita was rescued from death row by a secret U.S. agency
known only as Division, who faked her execution and told her she was being given a second chance to start a new life and serve her country. What they didn’t tell her was that she was being trained as a spy and assassin. Ultimately, Nikita was betrayed and her dreams shattered by the only people she thought she could trust. Now, after three years in hiding, Nikita is seeking retribution and making it clear to her former bosses that she will stop at nothing to expose and destroy their covert operation. For the time being, however, Division continues to recruit and train other young people, erasing all evidence of their former lives and turning them into cold and efficient killers. One of these new recruits, Alex, is just beginning to understand what lies ahead for her and why the legendary Nikita made the desperate decision to run. The series stars Maggie Q as Nikita, Lyndsy Fonseca as Alex, Shane West as Michael, Aaron Stanford as Birkhoff, Ashton Holmes as Thom, Tiffany Hines as Jaden, with Melinda Clarke as Amanda and Xander Berkeley as Percy. NIKITA is from Warner Bros. Television in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision, with executive producers Craig Silverstein (“Bones,” “K-Ville”), Danny Cannon (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Chuck”), McG (“Supernatural,” “Chuck,” “The O.C.,” “Charlie’s Angels”), and Peter Johnson (“Supernatural,” “Chuck”). The pilot was directed by Danny Cannon.
PLAIN JANE (Summer Series) is a new summer reality series that transforms one woman from the inside out to reveal a brand new woman. Each of the eight episodes will feature a new “Jane” searching for the change of a lifetime. With the help of British fashion expert Louise Roe (“Fashion Police: The 2009 Grammy Awards”), each Plain Jane will receive a head-to-toe style transformation, including new wardrobe and confidence-building exercises. Once the transformation is complete, the formerly Plain Jane will surprise her unsuspecting crush with the new look and reveal her true feelings to him. A love connection is – or isn’t – made. Hosted by Louise Roe, PLAIN JANE is executive produced by Allison Grodner (“Big Brother”), Rich Meehan (“Big Brother”) and Amy Palmer (“You’re Cut Off”) for Fly on the Wall Entertainment. The series is distributed by Sony Pictures Television.
“SHEDDING FOR THE WEDDING” (working title, midseason series): They are two of the most stressful things in life – planning a wedding and losing weight. Ten overweight engaged couples will live together and battle for the wedding of their dreams over a three-month period. Every episode, the couples will face off in a big physical challenge, competing to win one element of their wedding – from the invitations, to the cake, to the rings. Whatever they win will be theirs to keep. Together, they will plan their weddings with the help of the nation’s top wedding planners, they will take a vow to eat right and exercise, and world-class trainers and nutritionists will completely overhaul their bodies. At the end of each episode, the couples will step on the scale and be weighed together – the couple who lost the least amount of combined weight that week will be eliminated. In the end, one couple will win their fantasy wedding – a once-in-a-lifetime event – that America will attend. SHEDDING FOR THE WEDDING (working title) is from Raquel Productions Inc. with executive producers Dave Broome (“The Biggest Loser”) and Rick Hurvitz (“Pimp My Ride”).

The moving of Life Unexpected is a good decision since Monday’s are so over crowded with power players, and Nikita to follow the immensely popular Vampire Diaries is logical to give it a fair shot at renewal. The Friday decision isn’t surprising as they are pretty much putting both shows to pasture.
Sure, we know Smallville will conclude…but why do you assume SN is being put “out to pasture?” Would you rather see a Top Model encore on Friday? Exactly WHAT would you like the network to program on Friday? Networks HAVE had great success on the night, if they’re willing to stick something on that people WANT TO WATCH. Just because other nets have given up, The CW doesn’t have that luxury. With only five nights and 10 hours of programming, they need to put something STRONG in each slot. This is an amazing lineup, frankly. And finally.
hmmm i think nikita could start at an 8pm timeslot iam not to sure about thursdays at 9pm, although all the other networks 9pm are lowering.
So they didn’t pick up any of their other pilots for midseason? No Nomads? It was by far the best script they had, so of course not. Just like they did with Body Politic the year before.
I was just curious, was there any talk of midseason pickups? I’m still rooting for “Nomads.”
Nikita would have been a better fit with Smallville, which is closer to it in terms of audience, style and action.
CW is insane not to have picked up “Betwixted” – at least as a back up – quality script – great pairing with “Vampire Diaries” – what are they thinking??!!
I was looking so forward to Betwixt – CW – please think again
Hellooooooooooo im pintu please call me 09749325542
“Betwixted” was the a great pilot – you should rethink a mid-season pick up – it pairs perfectly with “Vampire Diaries”
“All-Original”???
How do you define original?
Half the shows on their line-up are remakes or adaptations.
both Supernatural and Smallville are ending next season, so Friday is a good move…once those are done, CW is going to lose A LOT of viewers
Finally, an all-white network!
Now I can fantasize about a wold that doesn’t exist.
Good work CW.
WB, when it was “Want Blacks” with Moesha, or UPN, with “Homeboys in Outer Space,” and “Secret Diary of Desmond Pffeifer,” were ratings flops.
Demography 101. Blacks are 12.5% of the population. About 40% of that is middle class, the rest (60%) is urban core, aka Ghetto poor. McDonalds, and other fast food joints (McDonalds brands itself “365 Black”) play to Blacks higher than other groups consumption of fast food (aka the obesity epidemic) but other than that, Blacks do not have either numbers or purchasing power to support advertiser networks. Not enough, and not rich enough!
BET and Tyler Perry (dirt cheap) movies are where its at. In order for Black artists to make actual money, other than Perry, they have to cross over to White America, which alone has the money and numbers to make them rich. Dave Chapelle found that his fans were basically all White (like Chris Rock’s) and his mocking of Black culture was lapped up by young White men. That’s who made both men rich, one handled it well, the other not so well.
Hispanics are about 22% or so of the population. They watch almost exclusively Spanish Language TV (and listen to Spanish language radio like El Cucuy). Nielsen’s site has breakdowns by Black, Hispanic, and “everyone” and there is no overlap between “Sabado Gigante” that Hispanics watch and “Lost” and “American Idol” that Blacks and Whites watch.
As a practical matter, as Whites decline from 89% in 1940, to 66% of the population today, willingness to embrace people of other races in all walks of life declines as well. You get hunkering down, the “Bowling Alone” phenomena described by Harvard’s Robert Putnam. Thus the only role for Blacks are props in “Magical Negro” films ala Spike Lee’s essay, like “Blind Side” or “Green Mile” where the central White character demonstrates superior moral stature by actions towards the Black prop.
At any rate, the advertisers on CW are there to reach White teen girls. That group does not care about Black or Hispanic characters, by and large. Disney’s Selena Gomez and the other one never caught on like Hannah Montana. Because White tweens don’t care about them. Edward Cullen from Twilight is not a dreamy Black vampire either. Same reason.
From the 1970′s through the 1980′s, White audiences who were significantly larger as a percentage of the nation accepted Black and Hispanic shows: Sanford and Son, Good Times, Cosby Show, Chico and the Man. Because their massive demographic advantage was not threatened.
If you want White teen girls (that’s CW’s audience) to embrace an updated Moesha, there better be a whole lot more of them. Disney had a failure with its non-Anglo pop princesses from Texas. Selena Gomez and the other one. That is the price for “diversity” — everyone hunkers down.
I don’t see any White leads on BET. Or White guys who look like Conan O’Brien on Univision or Telemundo.
Basically astute analysis.
Except, I must say: my white teen LOVES Selena Gomez, and the “other one”, Demi Lovato. So much in fact, I know their names AND the shows they star in. I can even tell them apart.
There’s nothing original about ‘Nikita’!
It’s just a remake of ‘La Femme Nikita’.
It won’t be as good, it will probably flop!
That is exactly what I thought when I began to read the description of it. I’m glad I’m not the only one that made the connection.
Stop pushing Betwixt already. They don’t want your stupid show, and if the pilot was well-written, they would have given it a go.
What the network needs is a Gossip Girl, only the quality of the actual show has to match the hype and glamour of the brand name. They need an original show that scores with critics and legitimizes the network, even if the ratings are more Wire-ish than anything else. Of course, a show that’s well-written, featuring young people, well, that’s rare, and if it’s available, it’s going to sell elsewhere, but they need a show that’s original and well-written.
“in its history” = four incredibly shaky years with no new hits
Sorry to say it guys, but Betwixt/Changelings was dropped since it was a dark and gloomy show about fairies with pointless teenage angst thrown in for good measure. And that my friends, would be a challenge for any network to market.
And quality script? From what I read, the script was very poor. It revealed way too much way too soon with little to no way to expand on the concepts. Kinda sucks because I was also looking forward to seeing it!
Wow. So exciting.
“Holy crap ! The old Nikita has gone rogue !
We need a new Nikita !
I know ! Let’s get a long legged Asian chick
who kicks the shit out of everybody !!! ”
That should be interesting for about
seven episodes .
HELLCATS. Oh boy.
Will the adorable girl with all the best moves
rise to her rightful place as
Queen of the Cheerleaders ?
Or will the jealous, nasty bitches
keep her down ?
The suspense is killing me.
hellcats is a very good show. i wish that was playing today. you are so cool if you like hellcats.
They are nuts for not giving Betwixt/Changelings a shot. At least a midseason shot.. Can’t be any darker than “Supernatural”.. More Genre shows are what this network needs especially since Smallville is ending and maybe Supernatural (contracts up?). Angel,Charmed,Buffy and of course Smallville/Supernatural did well for the Old WB. Cheerleaders??? I predict it will be the next TBL. What sucks is they don’t have any back up plan if any of these shows fail this fall..
Supernatural is the best show on T.V.!!! Dean should sleep with Nikita then dump her.
What happened to Amy Sherman-Pallidino’s The Damn Thorpes?
Why don’t y’all pick up the series “10 things I hate about you”… You will get alot of views! I love the show, and so does alot of other people!
Smallville has an audience?
I hope I can remember to change the channel back in time for supernatural. I wish they made a drug strong enough to help me suffer through smallville but I don’t see it happening. The only thing missing is Luke and Lora and a 4 season kidnapping. LOL. Smallville is a daytime soap not a prime time show.
I love 90210 and Gossip girl!!!!! That’s all I got to say:)
I am so glad to see that life unexpected is coming back for the 2011-2012 season. It was a great new show last season and I can’t wait to see what happens with Nate, Lux, Kate and Ryan. How many episodes will there be for the season?
