EXCLUSIVE: CW has greenlighed Pain Jane, a new makeover/dating
reality series from Big Brother executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan, which is set to air this summer.
British fashion expert Louise Roe will host the series, whose order is expected to be in the 6-8 episode range. Sony Pictures Television, where Grodner and Meehan’s company Fly on the Wall is based, is producing.
In each episode, one “plain Jane” will prepare for a date with a crush who doesn’t know she’s interested in him under Roe’s tutelage. The girl will be given a full-blown makeover including a style transformation and new wardrobe as well as confidence-building exercises that help her evolve. At the end of each episode, our “plain Jane” reveals her identity and brand new look, much to the surprise of the guy. Grodner, who also executive produces TV Land’s She’s Got the Look, and Meehan are executive producing the series with Pete Tartaglia. Plain Jane was packaged by UTA.

What exactly is wrong with being a plain jane?
There’s all sorts of television shows and movies about plain, nerdy, or schlubby guys where we’re taught women are supposed to love them for their smarts or their humor, or some other quality they have.
But when it comes to women it’s always about looks, looks, looks, trying to dress yourself up like a Barbie Doll because no matter how great a person you are, for women it always has to come down to your appearance.
These kind of shows make me sad.
Women get judged for their looks. Men get judged for their wallets. And please, men are objectified and ranked on their looks way more than they were 10 years ago. I’m talking about real-life, not Hollywood.
Reading through the description of the show it’s evident that it’s not just about the girls’ looks, and that the makeover addresses their attitude and confidence as well. Louise Roe is an incredibly funny, personable host, and I think she’ll bring some humanity and reality to the approach instead of just making it about appearance. A physical makeover doesn’t mean someone has to look like a Barbie doll to win.
Do guys even ask girls out anymore? Why do women have to work this hard? So sad and backwards. Pigeons in the parking lot have more balls.
Only the top 5-10% of girls get asked out.
Gender roles work both ways. Every hear the famous phrase, 10% of guys sleep with 90% of the women?
Louise Roe is amazing and will be a wonderful host.
This sounds great! So refreshing! A totally unique take on a genre that seemed to have exhausted every incarnation of the make-over show. Seriously, I can’t wait! Kudo’s to all for stretching creatively to give us the kind of show we all need and want. My DVR’s gonna get quite a workout with this one. So excited! Really, so! Very! Excited! Can you tell I’m excited?
You must be headed for the altar. just a guess.
Fod god’s sakes – another typo. This time in the first gd sentence “Pain Jane”! Nikki, get rid of this “reporter”. She is just awful. I may do the unthinkable and get my industry news from Variety. OK, that was just blasphemou talk but that’s how much this chick is bugging me.
that would be blasphemous, you self-righteous prick.
Fantastic.
For God’s sake — another two typos by someone whining “Fod god’s sake — another typo.”
It’s just a typo, kiddo. Variety paywall will welcome you with open arms–and hands.
Will Louise Roe be getting a makeover? I don’t know about the show itself, but the title is patently offensive.
I’m still waiting for “Josephine Average” where an average looking woman gets to choose from a group of handsome men. Paging Lisa Lupner!!
And the fun part of the show is plain Jane is really a man????
Who wouldn’t want to be a hole?????
Louise Roe is an amazing host, I can’t wait to see her on this. She always brings a smile to my face x
I agree with Chris. The fashion expert should help the guys know that the girls like them and let the girls BE THEIRSELVES. Women don’t need any more TV Shows telling them that their appearance is bad and they have to change it by dressing like a supermodel, which MOST PEOPLE CAN’T AFFORD in the real world. Fashion is a great way to express yourself and let you be creative with your wardrobe, but it SHOULD NOT be considered mandatory. There should be TV shows promoting women to LIKE WHO THEY ARE, and their personality, and be CONFIDENCE BOOSTERS. NOT TV Shows about fashion and makeovers that make women feel bad about the looks they were born with and can’t help. Everyone knows a nice, friendly, kind, sweet, caring, loyal, honest, trustworthy, bubbly, average-looking person with an imperfect wardrobe will go farther in life than a snobby, cold-hearted, pessimistic, attractive, mean, cruel women with perfect looks and clothing.
I actually think that it is wrong to say that:
“a nice, friendly, kind, sweet, caring, loyal, honest, trustworthy, bubbly, average-looking person with an imperfect wardrobe will go farther in life than a snobby, cold-hearted, pessimistic, attractive,
mean, cruel women with perfect looks and clothing.”
Sadly, it is not really the case in our current society. The people who I know who are cold hearted, snobbish, pessimistic, (have had depression), attractive, etc. are actually the ones who are successful. Sadly, dressing yourself to present yourself well just means that one is willing to put an effort into realising that we live in a materialistic world. And whilst it is great to have a good personality, sadly, the society that we live in really doesn’t treat them like much.
While I am not all for the latter kind of personality, it just seems like I have yet to see and know a bubbly, nice, friendly, kind, etc. with a imperfect (when i mean imperfect i mean just not a care for fashion at all) wardrobe succeed. Visual impressions goes a long way when you are trying to succeed. =/
Ok, so being a red-blooded American woman who does not fit the Hollywood version of beauty, I was very prepared to be offended by this show. However, after seeing the first episode, I am pleased to report that the show was both sensitive and tasteful. I applaud the creators for handling what could be extremely divisive and sexist in a respectful manner, allowing viewers the seat of witnesses, rather than voyeurs, to a woman’s self-realization and gutsy go at convincing her friend that she is relationship material. And as a “plain Jane” myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the enhancing of both her physical and emotional self. Every woman deserves to feel beautiful and confident.
Bravo, CW and Louise.
I thought the show was just plain annoying. The British accent is annoying and the show reminds me of what not to wear. Louise Roe’s mouth is too big and it is scary! The entire show is self-congratulatory and sickening. CANCEL IT!! We have enough garbage to watch. Where is the creativity? Intelligence? Substance??
I agree. For once I would like to see a real plain Jane get a makeover. All of these women are carefully selected. None of them were even slightly unattractive. It reminds me of those stupid comedies where they mess up a gorgeous actress hair, put a pair of glasses on her and no makeup then someone magically makes her beautiful. You know like “Princess Diaries”.I could do that and I am no makeup artist. Let us see them makeover someone without perfect bone structure and perfect skin. Then I will be impressed. Everyone wants to feel attractive.
Im sorry but well i absolutely love the show and its actually helping me because im also a sort of a plain jane i cant seem to tell a guy how i feel im scared of rejection but its helping me face my fears and move on also well fashion has been around and thats womens friend!we just love to turn heads and get complements because we feed off of them
I really like the show. I think it is empowering to shy girls it lets them know that with a little confidence they can get what they want. I can really relate to it because I have been that girl most of my life and it’s hard to break out of your shell.
I love this show I think it is a really good show for people to watch …..Because it’s not just a makeover show it teaches girls how to face there fears so they can have the confidence to do anything with any situation . Good job Louise you are the best and you are a good host and I love your style
