UPDATE: DISH reportedly has agreed to keep The Weather Channel on while the two sides continue to negotiate.
PREVIOUS: DISH Network threatened to drop The Weather Channel at midnight tonight over a carriage fee dispute. The satellite provider plans to launch its own weather-centered channel, Weather Cast.
“Despite negotiations over the past several months, DISH has chosen to be the first distributor to drop The Weather Channel rather than pay the standard industry rates others in the industry have already agreed to pay,” Weather Channel said in a statement Thursday and encouraged its viewers in the 14 million DISH homes to switch to rival satcaster DirecTV or a cable company.
DISH, meanwhile has bulked at the fee increase sought by Weather Channel, said to be in the 10% range, citing the channel’s venture into entertainment content, including movies, and its inability to provide local weather information for satellite viewers.

The Weather Channel is one of the few channels that still provides quality content. Court TV (now, True TV), on the other hand, has gone down the tubes; showing more and more programming that is crap. It still has good shows, but less and less….

If Dish pulls The Weather Channel, I will go with Direct TV. The 10% increase Dish refers to is 1 cent per month per subscriber since they only pay TWC 10 cents currently.
Years ago I was forced to get DISH network b/c of the high rise building I was living in. What I quickly discovered back then was DISH SUCKED. Why? For instance: Channel 175 would be BET from 12am – 2:59pm and then it would become ESPN2 from 3pm-11:59pm (channels and times used only to make a point). Not sure if it’s still this crappy, but as Mike Brady said to Greg when he bought his first car: Caveat Emptor!

Who watches the Weather Channel when the US government supplies the same information for free? The Weather Channel makes a pretty penny from free content. Hence, the greedy bastard comment.

I agree. When I tune in the weather channel, I want to check weather, not watch a movie or anything else like storm stories and the like. JUST WEATHER.
