Goodbye SOAPnet, hello Disney Junior. Disney/ABC Television Group just announced that it will launch Disney Junior, a new 24-hour basic cable/satellite channel dedicated to preschool-age children in 2012. The new channel will replace SOAPnet, now available in 75 million homes, which will end its 12-year run at that time.
Anne Sweeney, president of the Disney/ABC Television Group, addressed
the decision to drop SOAPnet. “The decision to ultimately transition SOAPnet to accomplish this was not arrived at lightly,” she said. “SOAPnet was created in 2000 to give daytime viewers the ability to watch time-shifted soaps, before multiplatform viewing and DVRs were part of our vocabulary. But today, as technology and our businesses evolve, it makes more sense to align this distribution with a preschool channel that builds on the core strengths of our company.” Additionally, soaps, once a staple of daytime programming, have been steadily losing ground, with three, CBS’ Guiding Light and As The World Turns and NBC’s Passions canceled in the past couple of years.
The 24-hour Disney Junior schedule will feature 200 new episodes annually of new series, including Jake and the Never Land Pirates; current shows, including Mickey MouseClubhouse, Handy Manny, Special Agent Oso, Imagination Movers and Jungle Junction, as well as Disney features, including 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin and Little Mermaid. The Disney Junior brand will first be introduced on Disney Channel’s daily programming block for preschoolers, where it will replace the current Playhouse Disney brand.
Sweeney called the launch of Disney Junior in the U.S. “the next step in our global preschool strategy, which began 10 years ago with the premiere of our first dedicated preschool channel in the UK.” Outside the U.S., the 22 Playhouse Disney channels and blocks will be rebranded Disney Junior beginning in 2011.

So I guess soaps are officially over. Thanks for the subtle warning, Disney!
Don’t change leave Disney Channel & Playhouse Disney ALONE!!!!!!!!!
Great Idea Mr. Landerson Love THE IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!
I too, like the idea of leaving Disney the way it is. I and my 2 yr. old grandaughter watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and the other toons,Handy Manny etc. everyday. I am 54 yrs old and i love Mickey. Replacing soaps is okay with me. I know that Disney Junior is going to be on the Disney Channel in the beginning, but on soapnet in 2012. Do they plan to go back to the current programming on the Disney Channel at that time?
I’m very unhappy with Disney, I’m a very devoted soaps viewer, don’t have the time to watch them in the daytime slot. I love Disney since I was child, have children, however, you already have 3 channels, why more? Put the soaps back on the weekend at least give me a break with more kids shows>>>>
i just don’t get it first you take amc and oltl off for food shows now your taing soapnet off for disney jr. what are you doing trying to keep up with nickoloden channels .SO LET’S CUT SOAPS THEY DON’T MEAN ANYTHING TO ANYBODY YOU ARE SO WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is wrong, very wrong. I have no children, my only outlet for soaps grrrr……
I guess Disney woke up to the fact that Nick Jr. owns the toddler audience with long-running shows like Dora, Backyardigans, Diego, etc.
A good move for Disney – why didn’t they do this sooner? If not with Sopanet then another net.
I don’t really care, I want a Vault Disney channel with classic Walt-era programming. When I was 12-13, I used to stay up until 3am just to watch Walt Disney Presents, The Mickey Mouse Club, Zorro, etc. because of the quality which wasn’t represented during the daytime. And I’m 24 now..
Come on Disney, there is a fanbase for classic programming.
Yes, I agree!
Do we really need a 24 hour channel for pre-schoolers?
Yes we do. As a parent I love having age appropriate content that I turn on no matter what time of day or night.
i have a 2 yrold and making dinner and trying to get him to stay in one area while i cook is hard and disney on comcast ondemand is my savior i can play repeats of mickey mouse club and hes happy
100 % agree that as a parent of a 2 year old I love the idea of turning on a preschool age show any time of day with out having to subject her to violent and crude behavior.
Find another way to entertain your child in the evening, like READING TO THEM, or putting them to bed…
No, we really don’t need a 24 hour preschool channel! that is what Tivo is for. IMHO no child should be up watching shows at ungodly hours, let alone potentially watch that much tv. i’m thankful for some different shows, but really 24 hours!
We need a happy medium. I too have a preschooler, but he is not up past 8. So maybe a 4am(for those early risers) -9pm(for those late nights) Disney Jr and 9pm-4am Classic Disney. …
Keep wishing… No vaulted Disney is intended.. Rather, it will be geared yet again, to the preschool age… I suppose Disney figures it can kill two birds with one stone… By educating the preschool babies and their mommies too! Afterall, teen-age pregnancy still on rise, perhaps the “mommies” will learn how to sign by the “X” when they accept their welfare checks and figure out the dollar of their, food stamps, WIC and medicaid.. Oh, not to mention contribute to the obesity of children and the lack of exercise and fresh air.. Why would they want to play or go for a walk outside when they can learn how to count along with Mickey with their cheese doodles and potato chips?
Wow I do take my child out during the day and so we miss most of the morning cartoons… So the 24 hour disney channnel is a great idea that way when she the day is over and I am cooking dinner and doing things around the house I am sure that there will be something on. That not only does she enjoy but on more of an educational level then the other disney channel items that are geared more to the tweens do not provide. And if you must bash everything you should know that WIC is to help prevent child obesity because the children are now alloted fresh fruit and vegies which most children do not get these days
Wow, pretty harsh judgement coming from someone who is spending their time in front of a computer screen posting on a forum about a new Disney channel.
You are ridiculous.
My son dances around when he watches the shows, he is also making complete sentences, and knowing what he’s saying. Now that might not seem impressive to you but he’s only 16 months old so it actually is. We go outside to play and have walks everyday, but we live in the north and its getting to be to cold to for him to be outside playing everyday. My son doesn’t watch tv all the time but when it 10 below outside I think being able to turn on the preschool geared shows for him to learn things and dance around is great. PS I was raped when I was 19 and that’s how I ended up pregnant with my son. So I was technically a “teen mom” so are you trying to say that I’m stupid and on welfare because I ended up pregnant at a young age because of something I had no control over, because I’m not I am a hard working mom, who graduated from school with honors and my entire freshman year and part of my sophomore year of college classes completed. So please, shut your mouth. I am so excited for Disney junior, I usually dvr some shows and we don’t turn on the tv until the afternoon so our dvr is full of kid shows so I miss out on a lot of shows I’d like to see, so this means I won’t have to fill up the dvr anymore.
Apparently you are spending too much time bashing educational programming and not educating yourself with the news. Teen pregnancy is actually dropping, and has been for a few years now. Also, the Playschool Disney shows actually teach counting, colors, shapes, letters, and problem solving. All of the shows encourage interaction from the young viewers. My 2 year old watches one episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse every morning while eating his Nutrigrain Bar and banana for breakfast, and then does the “Hot Dog Dance” along with Mickey and his pals. My son has never in his life had a cheese doodle, and only gets potato chips on special occasions. Just because some people choose to let their kids watch TV does not make them losers. Yes there are some people who use the TV as a babysitter, but there are also people who follow the American Academy of Pediatrics suggestions and limit screen time. My guess is that you have no idea what it is like to raise a toddler, work more than full time, go to school, and volunteer for the community. When you are that busy, 25 minutes of down time while your child watches an educational show is living in the lap of luxury.
Amen. Try a full time job. Volunteer fire-fighter. Two kids–one toddler, one school-age kid with homework. Laundry. Mopping. Grocery shopping. Dishes. One thirty minute program about counting, colors and using all tools available to problem solve that gives me a minute to SIT DOWN is really nice.
You are an idiot for talking like this. NOT everyone who watches Disney is a teen parent. NOT everyone who watches Disney gets public assistance. NOT everyone getting public assistance is or was a teen parent. Some people who get assistance actually have had a hard time and need ASSISTANCE. NOT everyone on assistance stays on it and abuses it. STOP trying to judge everyone and label them. YOU are not perfect. If you were, you wouldn’t be talking this trash. If you can’t say something intelligent, KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!
Good point. I’m a grade school teacher and unfortunately we are not paid like professional athletes! Some months are tough and it has nothing to do with cheese doodles. Fool.
If only the people who do good in the world – such as teachers, firefighters or policemen – made as much money as professional athletes. It’s crazy that they can makes $10+million a year for throwing a football around, the president doesn’t even make that much money for goodness sakes.
a little cynical are we….. lighten up, it’s a discussion about Disney. Take your political views to a political chat site. Seriously pathetic.
Ok you obviously don’t have children…people who don’t have children or receive assistance just really don’t understand how hard it can be. I receive WIC and Medicaid. My husband works full time, we make enough to get by but right now we can’t afford for both of us to have a job and put our son in daycare. Don’t go spouting off about things when you don’t know everyone’s situation. Every single person who receives assistance is different. We will be off of it as soon as we can get on our feet, we absolutely HATE not being able to afford things we need/want but sometimes you just have to reach out for help until you can make it on your own. When my son refuses to go to sleep late at night, or when he is up all night with a tummy ache, these shows will help tremendously. What child can go outside and play at 2 or 3 in the morning? Yea I don’t think so. These shows actually teach kids lots of things, from sharing to helping others, colors, shapes, counting and ABC’s way before they are the age to start school. I think it is a wonderful idea. Seriously, SOAPnet wouldn’t be going off the air if their ratings were doing well, something to think about. I, myself, watch SOAPnet and I really like a lot of the shows on there, including their Original Series “Being Erica”, but I would much rather have something educational for my son to watch instead of something full of more drama, as if there isn’t enough of that on TV these days. Sometimes parents need a break. Parents of toddlers(preschoolers) don’t get the peace and quiet everyday like other parents do while their children are at school. My son loves Mickey Mouse. He will sit in his room, with a cup of apple juice and a healthy snack, and watch these shows for an hour or two while I can cook, clean, take a load off or whatever I need to get done. He doesn’t eat cheese doodles or potato chips and drink a soda while he’s doing it. Don’t bash things if you don’t know what you’re talking about, because you clearly have no idea.
When I heard that a Disney Junior channel was coming, I couldn’t wait to look into it because I thought Disney was finally creating shows that were appropriate for the 6 to 10 year old audience. The “G” rated shows they play on Disney now are all about teenagers with teenage attitudes that constantly make it look like it’s normal to like a life of luxury and speak to friends, teachers, and parents with attitude. My six year old daughter does not want to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and she is NOT allowed to watch the Disney channel afternoon and night shows. In order for my daughter to watch TV (that won’t turn her into a “6 year old teenager”), I have to buy DVD’s of shows/movies that I know will be appropriate. Hey Disney-What about shows that target problems that typical 6-10 year olds have? Believe me, they have enough of them.
Good point. My 8 year old step son hates playhouse disney but I refuse to let him watch violent shows like bakugan or starwars so the only alternative is the more teenage shows that you were talking about. It would be nice to have showes geared more towards 6-10 that are not fantasy-violent and have good values.
I wonder what shows they will put on they Disney Channel when they move all the Disney Junior shows to their own station.
I think this is a great idea. I only hope that they put on programs that are geared to 7-10 year olds. The programs in the afternoon are not appropriate for 7-10 year olds (especially girls). My daughter wants to watch all the shows like hannah montana and nick’s i-carly. All her friends watch these shows and I think that is why these kids are growing up way to quickly. I am the minority. They are exposed to way to much to fast. Let them be kids. There really is nothing on tv that is in between playhouse disney and regular disney channel. I hope that this new network is geared to them rather than playhouse disney.
totally agree!! where are the age appropriate shows for 6-10??? i would much rather buy the dvd’s of shows i watched in the late 70′s / early 80′s than let me daughter watch a lot of the stuff that is on tv right now. the disney playhouse stuff is too baby for her, and the other stuff is too old for her!
I did the same thing when I was young. It may not have been “educational tv” but at least it was exposure to another time, as well as exposure to cultures, considering Disney frequently used classical music.
I don’t think its fair to take Soapnet off. There are plenty of children shows all day long and even on weekends for them to watch. They don’t watch that much TV anyway with all the computer stuff and playing the Wii now. This is the only time working women have to relax and time to catch up on all the soaps of the day.
Soaps are dying, something out of the 50′s a relic of last century, like broadcast network television. Kids spend money, kids get parents to spend money, wise move on Disney’s part. Soaps are even dying on daytime TV, slowly being replaced by game shows, talk shows. Like broadcast TV Soaps days are numbered.
I THINK THIS TOTALLY STINKS. THERE ARE DOZENS OF DAYTIME SHOWS FOR TODDLERS….I KNOW MY GRANDDAUGHTER WATCHED THEM ALL BEFORE SHE STARTED SCHOOL. I WATCH SOAPNET MORE THAN I DO REGULAR ABC PROGRAMING. IT SEEMS NETWORKS DONJ’T GIVE A RATS BEHIND FOR WHAT ADULTS WANT ANYMORE. DISGUSTING
I completely agree with Wally Q. Vault Disney Channel is a great idea. The nature shorts; all the other quirky Disney films; Wide World of Color; Spin and Marty and other Club programming; “Zorro” with Lost in Space’s Guy Williams – even the Eisner era.
Such is the stuff that TCM is made of and Ted Turner would not have missed this. Hey – it doesn’t have to be as badly done as the Fox Movie Channel.
What is going to happen to US Distribution of Being Erica?
damn! soapnet is great if your dvr f’s up or your show gets interrupted by the president or a special report. Now we have no back up! RIP soapnet!
I always hoped that Soapnet would start showing older reruns of classic soap operas from the 60′s, 70′s or 80′s. We need Disney Jr. like a hole in the head. Pre-teen kids don’t watch TV between 10:00P.M. and 6:00 A.M., but Disney would rather die then bring back classic Vault Disney shows late at night.
I agree about needing another Disney channel like a hole in the head! I’d LOVE to see reruns of classic soaps like The Edge of Night. Too bad SoapNet viewers didn’t get a vote!
Actually, some kids do watch TV in the middle of the night. Ever had a sick child? Mine doesn’t get sick very often, but when she is, I thank God that Nick Jr runs 24 hours. Sometimes there is no equal to lying in bed watching stupid TV shows. And at least we know they’re appropriate. I’m not a teen mom, and I don’t have any public assistance, but I do take offense to that remark. Any mom can be a poor parent and any mom can be a fantastic one. That aside, I do let my 3 year old watch some TV. We also do crafts, an educational workbook, and play outside daily. She does not eat junk food and doesn’t even know what most of it is!
I think the other Disney channel should gear towards 6-10 and then the XD can be for those over 10. I can’t stand that the regular Disney channel shows those silly teen attitude “comedy” shows during dinner cooking time. I prefer Disney to Nickelodeon, and am glad there will be a channel that isn’t going to be showing those tween shows! She needs to stay a little kid as long as possible!
It does seem like the soap genre is dying in the USA, but it seems kinda harsh pulling the SOAP NET for a Disney channel.
How many pre-schoolers will be watching at night? Why not mature the content with Vault Disney when the kiddies are asleep? It worked when they started the original Disney Channel and it works today with Adult Swim and Nick-at-Nite.
I often turn on Nick Jr. for my daughter late at night when she can’t sleep because of her reflux. It is nice to have to option of something for her to watch instead of having her running around. She usually calms down enough to go to sleep, which would not happen if she didn’t have anything to watch.
Come on folks, don’t blame Disney for the demise of Soaps. They have been in decline since the O.J. Simpson trial, and they just never had the strength to come back.
As the dad of a 2-year-old, I am glad Disney is bringing a 24 hour pre-schooler channel to our homes. (I hope DirecTV will offer it, but I digress.) I feel very comfortable letting my daughter watch Disney programming; she enjoys the characters & stories, and I enjoy the peace & quiet!
Sorry Soap fans, the sun is setting on the genre. It had a great run, but like the 30 minute network newscast, it just can’t survive the brave new world. I agree it is a shame. My mother, wife, and mother-in-law all love(d) “Days of our Lives.” It may be the last one to go, but sooner or later it will have to wave the white flag.
“I feel very comfortable letting my daughter watch Disney programming; she enjoys the characters & stories, and I enjoy the peace & quiet!”
Point soooo Made….
Back in the good ” ‘ol days”… Good hard play at the playground, with real live children, imaginations soaring…. Makes for good, looong naps with plenty of refreshing peace and quiet… Not to mention better behavior because there’s more tomorrow!
I suppose a variety of 24 hour preschool channels is in order… Outside play is becoming less and less.. Perhaps bedtime and the 9 hour much needed sleep for young minds to grow and flourish is the next to be rid of.. Why should our children use their imagination?? They can see it unfold in color, surround-sound on their bigger than life plasma TV..
Paula…you really are an idiot you know that? Do you even have kids?
Playing outside does wear kids down but is not always an option. When you live in an area with below freezing temperatures and excessive heat temperatures with very high heat indexes then it is not always a good idea for your kids to play outside. Sure in nice weather it is just fine but when you have temperatures over 100 degrees with heat indexes causing it to be 20 degrees hotter (or temperatures with wind chills that bring it to negative temperatures) and heat advisories advising to STAY INSIDE then it is nice to have an option for preschoolers on TV other than the violent shows that are on channels like cartoon network and other networks. I have two young kids and they love playhouse disney shows as well as Word World on PBS. We currently DVR some of these shows for the kids to watch during our downtimes in the day. My kids also play outside when the weather permits it and are very active kids. We also work with my oldest using workbooks and play with them plenty. My oldest has a great imagination and comes up with his own songs and all sorts of scenarios. Playhouse disney encourages kids to get up and move, teaches them various things and can even reinforce behaviors that parents teach their kids such as manners with their little short shows. Maybe you should get off your high horse and stop living in your close-minded little world.
What is happening to the SoapNet execs?
I’m not so sad about the soaps. I’m bummed about losing their programs like “Being Erica” and reruns of shows like “The OC” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
I’m kind of surprised by the number of people who mention their dependence on TV to entertain their kids.
“I’m kind of surprised by the number of people who mention their dependence on TV to entertain their kids.”
I’m not.
Thank You!! I’m happy to see I’m not the only one that understands this…
I no longer wonder why the children these days suffer from ADD, obesity, poor socialization skills, lack of communication with family/parents, trouble learning without the animation… It’s sad when a 9 yr old child has a 46 inch TV set on their Christmas wish list rather than the red wagon or shiny two-wheeler bicycle!
Just another set of ignorant comments.
My son is not being ‘educated by animation, he is however able to recognize Mickey when we are in a store, and dances the Hot Dog Dance when he hears it on our Clubhouse CD, he has also been enthralled with Mickey and group books. He also got a fire engine to push himself around on.
I have watched SOAPNET since the day the channel launched in our city. I have watched the programming go down. In the beginning there were Knots Landing, Dynasty, Dallas and etc. Those shows were shown with ABC soaps, and then Young and the Restless and Days came aboard. I think if the people that watched the channels had some type of input it would make a difference. Know one wants to watch a movie that is at least 10 years old, 90210 all day along, with the OC. Don’t get me wrong these are shows that I have watched in the past and I am a 52 year old grandmother. Please do not replace this channel with another children’s channel. We have enough of them.
Gross. Terrible decision.
I am thrilled ! There are times when we have to wake up early and while we are getting everything ready he can watch his favorite cartoons.
I am 24 years old I have PBJ otter is on it I love watching that show…
I love soapnet. I have 3 preschool grandchildren and the last thing they need is more TV shows. I am a Ryan’s Hope fan and it will be gone. There has got to be some cable channel that will see the popularity of older soaps.
I THINK THERE ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH CHILDRENS CHANNELS……PLEASE LEAVE THE SOAP CHANNEL AS IS.
NOW I DON’T HAVE TO RUSH AND CAN ENJOY MY SOAPS AT MY LEISURE. IT’S GREAT. I’VE EVEN ADDED A NEW SOAP THAT I NEVER WATCHED BEFORE, DAYS OF OUR LIVES. I THINK CANCELLING SOAP CHANNEL IS A BIG BIG BIG MISTAKE. I LOVE KIDS BUT THEY HAVE 8 CHANNELS AND MAYBE MORE. SEEMS SOMEONE’S NOT WORRIED ABOUT KIDS SITTING IN FRONT A TELEVISION ALL DAY IF IT SUPPORTS DISNEY. SOAPNET WAS A GREAT IDEA. PLEASE RECONSIDER. FIND ANOTHER CHANNEL TO CANCEL LIKE GONE FISHING OR SOMETHING STUPID LIKE THAT.
I agree they have alot of pre-school channels. and anyways who would want their child sitting in front of the T.V all day at that age they should get out and play and yah, and sitting infront of the T.V all day isn’t good for your eyes. So find a different channel like channel 2 or something like that and they have sprout and PBS kids, and qubo and plenty more and in the morning on Disney Channel they have playhouse disney till like 3 in the afternoon atleast in utah and 10A.M on the weekends. So dont change it.
If you want to know my opinion of the “real” reason for Disney Junior, I have one word….Sprout. If you have kids you probably know about Sprout, if not Sprout is the all pre-school cartoon channel run by PBS. Disney just wants their cut of the pie.
I’m personally psyched about the new Disney Junior and I’m surprised that it has took this long. Even PBS has a preschool channel. I am also bummed about Soapnet. I’m mostly excited that Disney Junior will be a basic cable channel. Right now if I want Nick Jr. then I would have to pay an extra $10. With Disney and Nickelodeon now all of there preschool friendly programming is only in the morning and by the 2 or 3pm its all for older kids. That is usually the time I need my 2yr old in front of the television distracted so I can cook dinner and what not. Its nice to have a helpful educational programming that I can trust to leave my little one in front of if I need to leave the room.
No kidding. Also, when the older kids are out of school like on holidays, weekends and vacation times they end the preschool shows at 8am at least in the Central time zone. They start them at like 3am. What preschooler is up at 3am? I am so glad for this channel because now when it is time to wind down after a fun day of playing there will be a channel with my kids favorite shows on.
Cry a river….. the reason why they are giving SOAPnet the boot is b/c ratings. What to do with a dead channel? Oh, let’s make a 24/7 kids channel. I love how some of you are jumping to why is there kids up that late? I guess you never had kids. I have stayed up all night numerous time with one of my boys. Whether they are sick or had a nightmare I was up all night with one of my twin boys. It will be nice to have a channel like this! 90% of channels show adult content after midnight. ROCK ON DISNEY!!!
I just want to add a response to the question “Why broadcast shows for pre-schoolers after midnight?” Well, two things to keep in mind:
1) Not everyone lives in the same time zone.
2) People in Hawaii have kids too.
I would love this get rid of playhouse disney <3
