Goodbye SOAPnet, hello Disney Junior. Disney/ABC Television Group just announced that it will launch Disney Junior, a new 24-hour basic cable/satellite channel dedicated to preschool-age children in 2012. The new channel will replace SOAPnet, now available in 75 million homes, which will end its 12-year run at that time.
Anne Sweeney, president of the Disney/ABC Television Group, addressed
the decision to drop SOAPnet. “The decision to ultimately transition SOAPnet to accomplish this was not arrived at lightly,” she said. “SOAPnet was created in 2000 to give daytime viewers the ability to watch time-shifted soaps, before multiplatform viewing and DVRs were part of our vocabulary. But today, as technology and our businesses evolve, it makes more sense to align this distribution with a preschool channel that builds on the core strengths of our company.” Additionally, soaps, once a staple of daytime programming, have been steadily losing ground, with three, CBS’ Guiding Light and As The World Turns and NBC’s Passions canceled in the past couple of years.
The 24-hour Disney Junior schedule will feature 200 new episodes annually of new series, including Jake and the Never Land Pirates; current shows, including Mickey MouseClubhouse, Handy Manny, Special Agent Oso, Imagination Movers and Jungle Junction, as well as Disney features, including 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin and Little Mermaid. The Disney Junior brand will first be introduced on Disney Channel’s daily programming block for preschoolers, where it will replace the current Playhouse Disney brand.
Sweeney called the launch of Disney Junior in the U.S. “the next step in our global preschool strategy, which began 10 years ago with the premiere of our first dedicated preschool channel in the UK.” Outside the U.S., the 22 Playhouse Disney channels and blocks will be rebranded Disney Junior beginning in 2011.

Bring back Vault Disney! I would love to see Disney Jr. until 11pm and then have Vault Disney stuff on after. Great compromise!
Oh my the 2 things i hate about Disney Channel:
1)Hannah Montana
2)Anna Margaret
I am so disappointed about Soapnet going of the air. I love watching the classic soap, Ryan’s Hope in reruns. Please do not take Soapnet off the air!
i can’t wait to watch disney junior!, mostly because 101 dalmatians
I’m sad they are creating a separate Disney Junior Channel…just like Nick Jr. they will probably pull a lot of my favorite shows off of the regular Disney Channel station. I loved Backyardigans when it was on the regular Nickelodean channel. Now it’s only on Nick Jr (unless its a brand new episode, and then it is only shown once…if I miss it, they do not rebroadcast it.) My satellite provider has Nick Jr. as a premium channel, of which we are not a subscriber. I’m afraid that is what will happen with Disney Junior, especially if it is replacing SOAPNet, which is also not offered by my satellite provider unless I upgrade to the next level.
If you are really interested in having Nick, Jr and such, call your satellite company and ask about the “family” package. It removes a lot of the “grown up” channels, but it gives you all of the cartoon channels. And it’s only around $30/month. It’s actually a TON cheaper than their packages they show online – they don’t advertise that they have it, but trust me, it’s available. Every summer we switch to that package because we aren’t watching as much tv (more time outside), but the TV we do watch is mainly our kids when they are having some down time. So that package is perfect for us.
I know for a fact that both DirecTv AND Dish have that package because we’ve purchased it through both.
Hope that helps!!
us too. we do not have any of the premium channels….
I’m sad and happy at the same time! My kids love Disney show, but we have DirecTv, so Playhouse Disney is on all the way to 3 pm. So, we can play outside, eat lunch, take a nap and still see Disney cartoons. They usually watch Tom and Jerry or Nick Jr. While I’m cooking supper, although right now I have tons of Christmas cartoons DVR’d that they love to watch. But, where I live, the news comes on at noon on ABC, so I’m a day behind for All My Children. Yesterday’s episode will come on today at 11. So, I usually watch it on Soapnet in the evenings. Now, I’ll have to be a day behind.
I know for a while, the Little Einsteins were on at 3! Why, you ask? Because my daughter woke up at 3 am (she’s 2) for a week straight!
I think cancelling the soap opera channel is a big big mistake, like what is happening to tv shows today, I would think they need to add a another channel especially just for classic TV fans like The edge of night, the doctors, love of life, another world, santa barbara and bring back as the world turns and guiliding light.
Some of y’all shouldn’t be so closed-minded and harsh on subjects you obviously don’t know too much about. That post was slightly offensive and quite rude. There is such thing as a balance between t.v. and outdoor & even indoor play. My kids (and most of the kids or toddlers I know) would drop ANYTHING to go play outside. But unfortunately, it’s not always ideal to have my 3yr & 18mo old girls outside all the time, and there’s only so much you can do indoors. We live in Louisiana, literally across the highway from the Mississippi River, might I add, and between the humidity, heat, and mosquitos (which my 3yr old is allergic to), and now up and down temperatures in the winter, it’s difficult to find a good time for the kids to play outdoors. Especially living next to the river, the air is always super damp. Down here it’s warm one day and cold the next since winter’s come around. And when my girls wake up in the middle of the night upset with a stomach ache/acid reflux (which is miserable), or teething, it will be nice to have a little distraction to add to my single attempts at comforting two cranky toddlers (while my husband tries to sleep between his 12hr+ shifts). The shows on playhouse disney will be great to be able to watch at any time. They’re educational, tolerable for parents, and catchy. Plus I love to see my girls having fun with the same characters I grew up with, especially when the new shows will start coming on in February. Have you really thought about the trash they put on cartoon network at night for adult swim? (Which, in itself is ABSOLUTELY rediculous. I can’t understand why adults need these moronic cartoons. I feel my I.Q. drop every time I see a commercial for them.) As of now, we don’t have channels like qubo, sprout, and nick jr, so playhouse disney is the only thing I let them watch. We’re getting the at&t U-verse in a couple of weeks, but I still don’t think they’ll be watching much of those channels anyway – they’re disney kids through and through. And have you ever watched the teeny-bopper shows like Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, or i-carly on disney & nick? They’re rediculous. I love disney, don’t get me wrong, but the disney channel during the afternoon or night-time is no good. I do think it is an awesome idea to have the classic vault shows at night, like nick at night. I’m only 21 but I distinctly remember watching shows like Zorro and the old MMC when I was young & I loved them. As far as soap operas go, I could care less. But that’s just me – I’m not too interested in the drama shows. There’s definately a stronger demand for tolerable & educational pre-school shows than there is for soaps. And by the way, not everyone that gets assistance is a pregnant sixteen year old. I know plenty of people (educated ones at that!) who get assistance, and it’s very helpful for them. Go buy 20+ cans of formula twelve months straight, plus baby food for 6+mos, plus diapers and wipes for a few years and let us know if your pocketbook enjoys it. =] Many of my friends couldn’t nurse the full first year. That stuff adds up! Being ignorant and irresponsible is one thing, but you shouldn’t bash people who are just less fortunate.
add a little $$$ for the gentle tummy’s that need the expensive formula instead of the bulk costco stuff…for the entire year because he wouldn’t nurse….
I couldn’t agree more! I live in Southern Ohio, right across the main highway from the Ohio River so I understand where you’re coming from, it’s not always ideal for my 2-yr old son to go outside and play. He would drop everything, forget about whatever he is doing just to go outside but he can’t always do that. We love the shows on Playhouse Disney and my son has learned a lot from them. I am very excited for Disney Jr. because he is also a night owl and is usually up til 2 or 3am…a 24-hr network with just learning programs for him will be wonderful. I also watch SOAPnet so I will miss those shows, but I’d rather have learning shows for my toddler than drama-filled shows for me. We’re big Mickey Mouse Cluhouse, Chuggington and Handy Manny fans and we can’t wait to see what else they show on the new channel
So Amanda, I totally agree with you!
i just hope they keep ooh and ahh. i love those guys.
ME TOO!!!
Viewers can you send letters to ABC/Disney and protest what they are they are doing or sign a petition who loves soaps and watch them ABC/Disney needs to know we soap opera viewers will reason with them children in our youth have school the next day and going to bed early so viewers let them know about speak out
Maybe some adults need to start watching these shows and learn how to express themselves clearly, using punctuation……
I hope you viewers still reading comments on this website i hope you viewers agree with me and reading my comment you know is true and i know parents who have children who send your comments on this website you can read my comment and take my advice just thinking about your child or children i read your comments about having another disney channel and playhouse disney every morning and every weekend you are right about that. Why they are letting children want to watch the disney jr all night and all day they go to bed early and they go to school and doing homework all day and half the night. Still agree with me about it.
I was sick when I heard SOAPNET was going off the air for yet another kiddie show. It was a way for me to catch up on the shows I missed during the day or revisit old favorites. I liked to watch the shows late at night while going through my mail; it gave me some quiet time to myself.
There are already tons of TV channels for kids, and they aren’t supposed to be spending that much time in front of the TV anyway. They’ll never get any exercise or learn any social skills if they only interact with the TV.
This was the only channel for soaps; we don’t need another one for kid shows.
I love Disney and I can’t wate till Disney junior comes on
I can’t wate till Disney junior comes on!!!!!!!!!!!!I can’t wate
Yes as the mother of a two year old I’m thrilled to here about a second Chanel that caters to the preschool children especially one like mine who’s on a 3rd shift schedule. : )
You obviously don’t have children… Have a couple and then post your “Honest opinion”.
I just hope Disney Junior be on channel 15 and Regular Disney be on channel 75 and soapnet channel 76
im glad disney will have another chanel! but dont take soapnet off!
Awesome!! My son love Nick Jr. so this is good to hear we love disney!
I agree…have a two year old and from time to time we record some disney premier movies from the disney channel. I don’t like her to watch this channel because of all the commercials so we watch nick jr all the time. I think that if Disney Jr is going to be like the nick jr channel it will be more constructive and will teach her and learn more …why not!! I love this idea!!
Disney Junior!!!!!
LEAVE SOAPNET ALONE EVERY BODY DOES NOT USE DVRS MAKE A CHANGE TO ANOTHER CHANNEL THAT NOBODY WATCHES LIKE CHANNEL 95 ACCES TV WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE THAT WORK DURING THE DAY THAT DONT GET TO WATCH THERE SOAPS THAT IS WHAT WE WATCH AT NIGHT TIME
WTF!! Why are they canceling SoapNet? Cancel some other channel for Disney Junior!! I love watching 90210 all the time!! That is my favorite show and I also need Days of Our Lives when I miss it!! Disney sucks!!!! Now I need to buy all of the 90210 DVD’s to enjoy watching it!!!! And who wants another Toddlers Disney? Make a classic disney!!!
