Roger Ebert, who has refused to allow cancer to silence him, finding a new voice online, was named Man of the Year in the 14th annual WEBBY Awards. Ebert was honored for raising the bar for online journalism for his blog Roger Ebert’s Journal.
Ebert just came out guns a blazin’ against 3D in a fascinating Newsweek opinion piece that shows he’s lost little off his fastball.

I love Ebert and all, but didn’t he say recently that video games will never be art? Has he never played Heavy Rain?
He did, and he has not. On Ebert’s blog, his response to people who encourage him to try the groundbreaking games is “I already have a day job.” He then proceeds to review games, as a whole, based on a couple of lectures he’s watched. I normally respect him as a journalist, but that’s hypocritical. It would be like Ebert reviewing a movie based on the trailer.
Video Games are to art what alcohol is to personal growth.
Not to go all ad hominem here, but you’re dumb.
Okay Y, go back to your headset there buddy. I think that 14 year old from Japan is online.
Yes. And he revisited the topic recently… and then allowed almost 4000 comments (the overwhelming majority against his view) and responded to some of them. His twitter account is one of my goto references for many interesting things – only some of which are about movies.
My wife and I met Roger and his wife several years ago, after one of his first surgeries. They could not have been more gracious. Both to the stars and execs who jockeyed to say hello or to us, who are neither stars nor movie execs.
Very happy to see that he seems more prolific and beloved than ever.
I give Mr. Ebert all of the kudos I can for not disappearing into oblivion, despite all of the medical setbacks he has suffered the past few years. He definitely knows how to make lemonade out of lemons…
Sugar, water, lemons.
Now the secret is out for everyone.
I’ll leave the specifics a mystery. Hint: don’t cook the lemons.
