Legendary Pictures has announced a movie rights deal for Mass Effect, the Electronic Arts/BioWare videogame for Xbox 360 that will be co-financed and distributed by Warner Bros. Mark Protosevich, who adapted Marvel Entertainment’s Thor, is in talks to write the script. The scifi series takes place in 2183 and follows Commander Shepard of the SS Normandy as he leads a team on a mission to defeat an ancient alien race that invades the galaxy every 50,000 years, wiping out all organic life. Legendary is separately working on an adaptation of World of Warcraft with former Spider-Man director Sam Raimi. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni produce with Avi and Ari Arad.

I’m Lt. Shepard and I endorse this deal. Shop at Legendary Pictures my favorite studio.
fan boys rule the world.
Ha ha, you got some discounts I see.
There is such an interesting world already created by BioWare in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 that it should be easy to create a decent story. Note to Legendary, get the music composer from the games for the movie, he is fantastic.
Fantastic Xbox 360 game. I cant wait to play Mass Effect 3. I’m glad theirs a movie being made since it has the potential to be the next Star Wars if adapted correctly. That said, I wish Universal picked this up. They really need a franchise on their plate and this film would have been perfect for them. Warner Bros. is too greedy for my blood and will probably have this turned into a 3D film right at the last min just like they did with Clash.
You’re right about keeping the music. I can’t stand video games, but even I couldn’t help but notice it. If they keep the same composer and style – this would make a pretty decent franchise.
If Legendary has any sense – they’ll stick with it.
FAIL in the making. Those ass clowns at Legendary are not real producers. They can’t develop or produce anything that is good.
Clash of The Titans – FAIL. Superman – FAIL. The list goes on. They should stick to Mall Cop – lowest common denominator of stupidity and leave comic books and video games alone instead of ruining them.
The only WIN they had was The Dark Knight and that was due to the genius of Nolan – not those ass clowns.
Yeah, their hearts are in the right place, but they do a piss-poor job of selecting their screenwriters and directors.
holy fucking shit
So then we should expect casting news of Sam Worthington being the top choice soon then? For some reason the industry thinks he’s the only actor in Hollywood right now, and with the shaved head, well heck perfect right? *rolling eyes*
Can’t wait for this. NOT. Just another video game adaptation ripe for a good ruining by Hollywood. Yay.
Warners have so many space/sci-fi action-adventure projects on their slate already they must have a deal that if they get a dozen of them in active development they get a free sandwich at Subway!
But in saying that I would love to see Robotech and the Forbidden Planet remake on the big screen. If these potential projects don’t scream ‘event movie’ material I don’t know what does.
I love these games (A LOT) but at it’s core this is pretty boilerplate stuff narratively…it passes in the game because the playing of it is engrossing and you get attached to the characters over hours and hours and hours of gameplay. I’m not saying it’s not worth adapting but fanboy hyperbole about it being some new kind of watershed sci fi thing had best be approached with eyes wide open. This could very easily and justifiably dismissed by any and all crossover audiences if not done right.
Seems like a good candidate for a high quality TV show though given how the game excels at episodic bits.
Sounds incredibly fresh…”a mission to defeat an alien race.” Sooooo many bad aliens out there.
Everybody, say it with me now: NO NEW IDEAS! NO NEW IDEAS! NO NEW IDEAS! Death to the creatives!
Well Hungry Writer get over to Mary Margaret Network or GameRecuiter and look for a writing gig. Perhaps you can help write a game like Mass Effect that has already sold about a billion dollars before a film even comes out.
Hollywood doesn’t own stories. They borrow them for a while, unless you write a spec. You’re no longer the author after you sign the dotted line and the studios pwn you.
I’m talking about the studios, twat, not the video game companies. Go masturbate again and then play Second Life.
And there was a deal in the works for Uncharted 2 – not a peep from that since. Won’t hold my breath for Mass Effect.
Remember the good old day when hack writers didn’t spend all day reading Deadline and it was left to those that worked in the biz?
Fingers crossed they go back to writing their query letters about that totally original unmarketable indie drama with hart and a hook…..it’s about midgets.
No.
Mass Effect doesn’t need a movie after it.
In its own right Mass Effect is already a movie… Well, an interactive story telling experiance.
This wont pull the watcher of the movie as much into the universe as the game does. Tis a waste.
