It’s pretty much what you would expect a Family Guy Emmy mailer to be – outrageous and funny. After dressing up Stewie as President Barack Obama last year under the “Vote For Change!” slogan, it’s dad Peter Griffin’s turn as cover boy this time as the lead from Precious in a tongue-in-cheek take on the poster for the dark feature about an overweight Black teen girl abused by her mother and impregnated by her father. The “Celebrating Diversity” theme is carried on inside with a list of all writers on the animated show grouped by ethnicity/sexual orientation: “Family Guy – written by 8 WASPS, 6 Jews, 2 Asian and 1 Gay.”
Being outrageous helped Family Guy land its first best comedy series Emmy nomination last year, the first for an animated series since The Flintstones in 1961. (Other tag lines featured on last year’s Family Guy Emmy mailer included: We peaked 3 years ago, so by your logic we should get an Emmy now; You have to vote for us — we did a holocaust episode; and Family Guy with Tina Fey… Not really, we just want an Emmy). No doubt the Family Guy writers, who are behind the show’s Emmy campaigns, are hoping for a repeat, possibly matching on the TV side what their inspiration, Precious, accomplished on the film side earlier this year: six Oscar nominations, including best picture, and two wins.

LOVE IT!!!
Kinda yesterday’s news. But then again, nobody in comedy thinks Family Guy is any good. (Sure makes a ton of money, though.)
So you’re speaking for everyone in comedy, are you? How did you get that position?
I appointed him under my authority as the King of Comedy.
Perfect!
PS. Precious sucked.
HATE it.
Oh, this is classic Seth and Co.
I can’t wait until UC Berkeley starts offering Degrees
in Writing with emphasis upon the Family Guy material.
wouldnt it be great to have classes like that! god id go back to school!
Remember when Family Guy use to be funny?
And every joke wasn’t anchored to some lame FLASHBACK punchline.
No I don’t, it has always been like that. Unfunny.
I haven’t seen it recently but you’re wrong if you don’t admit the first one or two seasons was pretty damn funny.
South Park is funny Family Guy is not as it is written by Manatee who string together unrelated jokes over 22 minutes.
This is pretty awesome.
Don’t get the accolades. What about Simpsons or South Park?
Was surprised to hear that The Simpsons never won for Best Comedy Series. Travesty.
The Emmy rules didn’t allow The Simpsons to even enter as a comedy series until 1993 – supposedly, the reason the voiceover Emmy was created was as a “consolation prize” for the show. In the two years it did enter, it wasn’t nominated (then again, look at the shows that were – Cheers; Frasier; Home Improvement; Larry Sanders; Mad About You; Murphy Brown; Seinfeld), after which the producers moved it back from “comedy series” to “animated program”.
I am glad they sent this. As an aa I had a feeling that not only was there no black people working there but that they did not know any black people in there private lives. The jokes that involve blacks are stale and out of touch. The jokes are from people who think they are cool enough to include blacks without knowing any. If they do know any they would be of the tiger woods variety and therefore do not count. The show is offense because it comes from a place of ignorance.
how do you know the 1 gay guy isnt black?
Because they would have said so. The 1 gay is probably also a male WASP or Jew, fyi.
wow..so Tiger woods isn’t a black guy..or he just isn’t black enough FOR YOU?
oh wow! I have to admit, family guy used to be good..now? it sucks.
but that comment was about as funny as you could make it..I cracked up.
Is Obama black enough for you? I mean, he doesn’t have a “noticeable negro dialect” according to Reid..so you might want to cross HIM off your list of “black enough to be credible black people”.
wait…Bill Cosby enunciates!! he doesn’t speak Ebonics!! oh man..he’s not black enough for you either, huh? I guess HE should guest star on the family guy!
wait, bill cosby enunciates?
Nobody in comedy thinks Family Guy is that good?! I am a TV half-hour writer (who actually works) and I think the show is hilarious. It’s the only show I watch as it airs.
Exactly, you’re not “in comedy.”
@ howdoyouscale – What other varieties of black people are there?
And it doesnt matter if youre a writer–you can laugh at whatever you want. Random jokes, constant references to irrelevant things, whatever you want. Just ’cause you do, doesn’t mean Family Guy is high calibre (like South Park)or quality.
The show rarely has episodes with an actual plot. There is no development and ridiculous levels of “pop culture” reference that comes across like listening to a group of 30 somethings sitting at a bar, getting drunk and popping off one liners from 80s sitcoms and movies.
Gets old reeeeeeeeal quick.
Yet I still watch the damn show. =/
The artwork itself is fantastic, but I’ve noticed this subtle digging at Precious from sitcoms and others in Hollywood since the Oscars, like it didn’t deserve its accolades.
I’ve found it a little unsettling.
To Commenter “how do you scale bespoke?”
First off, I think you meant to say “THEIR private lives”, not “THERE”. Also, I think you meant to capitalize the T in tiger and the W in woods, as it is a proper name. And finally, I think you meant to say OFFENSIVE not OFFENSE when you said “The show is offense because it comes from a place of ignorance.” But I can see how you are uniquely qualified in the area of ignorance…
how do you scale bespoke?- as an aa (since you know we don’t all think alike) I love the show and it’s siblings; the casts of actors are diverse including, of course african americans. the Cleveland Show contributes much needed diversity on tv and work for black actors but I wouldn’t mind further diversifying the Family Guy writing room if I’m the one to get the job!
Isn’t Cleveland voiced by a white guy?
yes which I think is great- imdb the rest of the cast and see all the black people for yourself
Another painfully unfunny Family Guy “joke.”
Seriously, all these guys do is appropriate other people’s content and put their characters into it, and you’re supposed to laugh because you recognize the content they stole. “Oh, I get it, it’s a scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I liked that movie. That’s comedy gold, man.”
Family Guy is unoriginal, mean-spirited, forced, and on top of that, plain unfunny. Cannot comprehend why people watch it.
I know Seth likes to make big juicy burgers out of sacred cows, but having a Family Guy character vomit for three minutes after kissing a transgendered person was just too much.
(Yes, it’s a cartoon; yes, it was a dog kissing the transgendered person. No, I don’t think anyone remembers anything but the message.)
Compared to that a Precious parody seems tame.
i love seth mc farlane and company…he is an equal oppurtunity offender! we need to laugh at ourselves…thanks
Figures the TV writer would enjoy this show while most everyone else thinks it is awful. This explains a lot.
Haha That’s pretty funny.
Although Family Guy doesn’t take on a lot of the current events and social/political issues that South Park has been tackling for the last couple years, it is still pretty damn funny. I really don’t care if every single joke is a flashback as long as it makes me laugh.
Still doesn’t beat Jonah Hill’s bit at the Teen Choice Awards…

I finally quit Family Guy three weeks ago after Brian ate the feces out of Stewie’s diaper and, subsequently, licked him clean. That was at least four years too late. Ever since the show made its “triumphant” return it’s been horribly unfunny, offensive for the sake of being offensive, and just not nearly as clever as the writers think.
I tried to hold on to it, just because the reruns were so great in college, but I finally, finally give up.
You are not alone. I think we gave up right around the same time. It’s been like night and day, comparing these newer episodes with the previous seasons. What the hell happened to that show?
Where can you see this episode?
it’s already been rerun on cartoon network maybe you can catch it there (or hulu). the ep was way over the top for me- excruciatingly scatological (I was covering my eyes to hide from out-of-frame deplorable acts) but for a cartoon to play that out between a dog and baby with such effectiveness is an achievement I think.
I’m a working screenwriter who is black. I thought “Precious” sucked the big one. In fact, I don’t know too many people in or out of the business who liked it. Of course in the “community” as a screenwriter you can’t say anything against it because then you’re accused of being “jealous.” If someone had made a comment similar to the one Sigourney Weaver made about “Hurt Locker” getting Oscars because it had a woman director about “Precious” getting it because the nomineess were black, that actress or actor most likely would have been a pariah. But I would have totally agreed with them. Also, I love “Family Guy” and I’m a dramatist. It’s the only network show I watch beside “L&O SVU.”
Really? SVU? Nothing against the series, but if THAT’s the only other network show you watch, your doesn’t count.
Most people I know in the business either slavishly loved “Precious” in a liberal, white, guilty kind of way or were ambivalent. No one out and out hated it.
And dont forget the last few years, in EVERY ep, its been a non-stop liberal hit piece on anything Conservative, Republican, or right-winged! And for that dork who said Family Guy is an equal opportunity offender-well, the next dig against a leftist will be the first! Im done with this POS piece of crap-Brutony, OUT!
I hear you, Brutony! Yes, it was very funny, and theres still alot of humour in each episode, but wow, I cant stand the constant hitting on the Right! Hey MacFartland, try insulting or mocking a liberal FOR ONCE! Maybe even, wait for it,,Obama-Horror!
first of all that is an awsome poster nd they better win…second anyone who says family guy isnt good in any kind of way must be either retarded or an emotional uffwad who has no ability in controling how they feel so they stab at a great effin show(it was cancelled twice nd brought back i mean cmon thats all the proof you need also ppl in comedy that think it aint funny dnt kno funny)that freakin got nominated for an emmy. they always had good plots rewatch every episode then try to tell me otherwise The season that just ended was one of the funniest by far with episodes like “quagmires dad”,”road to multi-verse”,”buisness guy”,and “Brian and Stewie” im cntin dwn the days till the new one so forget the simpsons and south park they consist of garbage soaking in vomit nd excrement and soon will be set ablaze and forever vanish…hofully lol now is that a good enuff reason for yall to back off cuz im tired of hearing the same dumb ish but in the end i geuss no one will care nd still think differently (even tho the’re wrong) so uff em..THIS IS THE ONLY TIME IM SAYING SOMTHING UNLESS SOMEONE GIVE ME A SOLID ROCK DISCUSSION ON IT BUT YALL GOTTA TALK FIRST BFORE I SAY ANYTHING ELSE!!
p.s. black guys/girls, old guys/girls,gangstas,preps,n even gays love this show so just effin shut up about it
*facepalm* to Blaise.
this is hilarious and they should win an Emmy
Family GUy is the suckiest show that ever lived.
Hey, South Park out ‘edged’ those guys already. I saw Seth McFarlane on Larry King talking about the MOHAMMED episode, what a a dweeb, he acted like they weren’t supposed to do it becuase ‘it’s too offensive.’
COWARD!
