Full Series Rankings For The 2009-10 Broadcast Season
The final stats on the 2009-10 broadcast TV season, which ended last night, are in. No surprises at the top. Fox won in the key adults 18-49 demographic for a record sixth straight year; CBS was No.1 in total viewers for the 7th time in the past 8 years. All Big 4 networks except for ABC were boosted significantly by sports this season: CBS (Super Bowl/NFL Sunday overruns/Playoff Games/NCAA), NBC (Sunday Night Football/ Playoff Games/Winter Olympics) and Fox (NFL Sunday overruns/Playoffs Games/College Football Championships/MLB post-season). NBC was also hurt by the dismally rated Jay Leno Show and the fact that its last season totals were inflated by the Super Bowl. ABC and CBS were both negatively impacted by the erosion of some long-running series, including ABC’s Desperate Housewives (down 17% in the 18-49) and CBS’ CSI (down 25%). But CBS had sports as well as more over-performing series, including breakout reality hit Undercover Boss, new drama NCIS: LA and comedy Big Bang Theory, which was the biggest gainer vs. last season, up 39% in the demo. ABC’s strongest new addition was comedy Modern Family. And at Fox, hit new dramedy Glee helped offset the decline of American Idol and departing 24.

Didn’t I read somewhere that Univision figures into this? In L.A. they beat all the “major” networks? Just curious. Seems silly not to see the real ratings if other stations rank higher.
I wouldn’t want to work for, nor do I work for any of the networks. With that said, I predict that NBC might have a huge hit on its hands with The Event. Those who have seen the pilot give it rave reviews. It also has a great cast with Blair Underwood, Jason Ritter (who was great as Ambers teacher on Parenthood), Laura Innes, Scott Patterson, Zeljko Ivanek and Bill Smitrovich. I think it will be a huge hit next year. Why do I say this? Because it’s a huge topic on Twitter right now. Of all the new shows, The Event has the most tweets with over 4,000. The show that comes closest is Stuff My Dad Says. Don’t underestimate the power of Twitter. Undercovers could also prove to be a huge hit because A) Its in a great timeslot B) JJ Abrams has a huge fanbase C) Undercovers is probably just as good as your average USA Network show, which is a good sign.
you have been posting some version of this same point all over this site for the past three weeks. we got it: nbc’s development is just like usa’s. nbc is going to be very successful. ‘the event’ is going to be amazing. nbc, nbc, nbc…
it was credible the first three times. the last seven, not so much.
Calm down Skippy. I agree that the show looks good but nothing kills a good show like unrealized expecations. Remember all the online buzz for “Snakes on a Plane”? And we all remember what happened with that.
A high percentage of women will be watching Dancing with the Stars and a high percentage of men will be watching Monday Night Football, and many may be watching both. We still have that comedy block on CBS which leads into Hawaii Five-O. And “The Event”‘s lead-in is Chuck, which is not a strong show.
To be honest, I know many people – myself included – who didn’t watch Chuck this season as we thought it was not going to be renewed since it was nearly canceled last year.
Bottom line, we’ll see. But don’t rely on Twitter to state which shows will be huge. It’s hardly scientific.
Surprised to see ABC’s almost equal with NBC in the ratings. And yes, Univision trounces CW regularly and sometimes some of the Big 4′s shows.
So, the CW isn’t dead yet.
BLAME KIMMEL!! ABC, TIME TO GET RID OF THAT CANCER IN THE CLUBHOUSE!!!
hey moron, Kimmel isn’t in prime time so it doesn’t have anything to do with the ratings average.
It looks to me like ABC isn’t doing much better than NBC! I hope this year sees NBC jump up to 3rd place!
Austin, I think NBC could very well find itself in 3rd place. Why? Because their pilots are quite good, especially The Event and Undercovers. Undercovers is a USA style show and that will work for NBC.
ABC gets a boost from sports by airing football on Saturday nights, easily tripling what any other net gets that night every week through the fall.
From Fox’s press release celebrating their 6th straight win.
“FOX’s median age of 44 for regular programming is the youngest of the four major broadcast networks – four years younger than the second-youngest network, NBC; six years younger than ABC; and 10 years younger than CBS.”
CBS may still dominate but they’re still the oldest network.

Um, no Ive never posted here in my life. Now, there are other people that have made the same points that I was making, but they’re different people. They’re not me.

Part of the same NBC flack team, maybe??”
I suspect that in Miami, Univision probably was also numero uno.
