Shrek Forever After will beat the opening weekend of the original Shrek, and should beat the $484 million worldwide. It will most likely be way under the $700-$900 million worldwide that Shrek 2 and Shrek 3 had though.
Um, no it’ll probably do worse than ‘Dragon WW. Or, at best, better than Madagascar WW.
Macgruber tanked! I feel sorry for Kristen Wiig. Who at Universal thought Macgruber was going to conquer the green ogre? McGruber should’ve been released late August – Labor Day when brainless movies reign supreme.
Sherk 4 opens below my expectation.
the estimated cume of Robin Hood is wrong…
you have added just the 2 weekends without including the weekdays…the cume will be 64 if it has 17 mil weekend.
Wow @ Shrek 4. Guess they’ve lost any good will they had left toward the series.
If that holds, a $70 million opening weekend might mean that fewer people go this weekend than went to the first Shrek, taking into account inflating as well as higher 3D ticket prices for this newest installment.
This is what happens when you stretch out a franchise past it’s breaking point (see Terminator: Salvation for more details).
S4–let’s face it. It looks frantic. And they aren’t pitching a story in the ads, just relying on the brand. that’s not enough. (Disney and pirates 4, beware.)
Mc (not so) Groovie. Um, I don’t know who they were talking to, but this was a funny skit maybe twice. After that, horrible. It’s one single joke. That’s it. And they played the variations to the point you wanted to throw an anvil at your tv. So that it flops is a surprise?
Also, the Just Wright projected total is off. it was at 10 going into the weekend. 10 plus 4 is 14.
Well, a good movie bombs while more pop culture referencing junk makes money. I’m ashamed to be an American movie goer now.
What are you referring to as “a good movie?” I honestly don’t know.
MacGruber only cost $10 million to make so it will most likely at least break even, right? I’m not sure if that qualifies it as a bomb exactly. Maybe disappointing but not a bomb.
Yeah, you’re so right. Because the studios get 100% of the BO gross. Oh, and the labs, they make those 2500 prints for free, and the TV stations and newspapers run ads for free too.
So, yeah, MacGruber should bring in close to 10 mil at the BO and all of that covers the productions costs. It’s not a bomb at all.
Bill — FTW!
It’s a bomb.
You would think that with the increase of IMAX screens, it would be possible for two films to be screened in IMAX in the same market. Alas, that appears to be rare.
It’s disappointing that two weeks into its run, almost every venue that had been showing “Iron Man 2″ in IMAX or FakeIMAX is now showing “Shrek 4.”
There’s got to be a better way.
Yikes! I was actually thinking that MACGRUBER would turn an OK profit.
$70 mil. seems slightly disappointing for SHREK, considering the third one made over $100 mil. its first weekend. Can’t say I’m surprised, but I have heard through word of mouth that it’s better than the third. Maybe it’ll have decent legs?
I can’t believe a TV skit about a campy and canceled 80′s TV show that you can see for free each week, didn’t find and movie audience at $11 a ticket.
The smart people in Hollywood put so much thought into these movies. I just can’t believe it!
Ouch all around. Shrek is a bomb considering the opening numbers for the previous films in the franchise.
I guess those early positive Rotten Tomatoes reviews for MacGruber didn’t help it one tittle.
I really thought Macgruber would do more but I think a case of working in hollywood where you hear very good preview scores and see advanced screenings as to how funny it is. At the end of the day, the tv spots were unfunny, it’s based on one of SNL’s worst and least funny bits and the movie looks like sketch comedy. But wow, what a bomb. Iron Man was decent but very forgettable, Robin was boring.
Many critics said IM2 was funny, too. How can I ever trust them again?
Wow, this is a disappointment for DWA I thought that Shrek FA w/ the higher 3D prices will do better than this. I wonder if it will have any legs or will it fizzle around $120M? Anyone has some exit polls info? Will MacGruber be the last of those hideous unwatchable SNL movies? Finally Robin hood…ouch !!!
It’s a flop. If it only opens to that on 3D screens then it is considered a definite failure. I actually think the figure will be about $60 million. No more Shrek. Good riddance. They really should have stopped at number 2.
Before everyone gets their panties in a bunch about Shrek 4 – it beat Avatars record with 20 million in Russia this weekend. If that is any indication it will kill overseas and that makes it not only a success, it means that shareholders could sue DWA for a lack of fiduciary duty if they hadn’t made the film.
Ice Age 3 didn’t do that great last summer domestically but it killed overseas. Whether we like it or not, it doesn’t matter if the rest of the world does. That’s where the real money is made.
Not surprised McGrubber is bombing. The taste of so many bad SNL movies from 10+ years is still in the mouth of movie goers.
None of the clips and trailers that I have seen made me think it would be funny or good. SNL needs to stick to Late Night. In fact, SNL needs to figure out how to make that show good. They only get ratings when Tina Fey is Palin or a big name Star is guest host (Betty White).
It’d really help SNL if they changed their format to an hour show. That’s partly why MADTV was funnier. The worst skits did not get stretched out indefinitely.
MacGruber bombed? That must just be a typo.
People need to see macgruber. They need to get out there and just SEE it, give it a SEE, SEE the macgruber in action, see it, believe it. No, I have no connection to the film, nor do I hate celery, but I believe in people seeing macgruber. If you don’t, maybe you…need to see macgruber? I hope so. Btw, Will Forte is very very funny. You owe it to yourself — no, you owe it to me — to see macgruber. Shut up! I’m not Will Forte! Please be my friend.
Yeah, that post will help.
Shrek ForeverAfter is great only because of 3d. I’ve seen it in 3D and normal. For once, the 3D did not give me a headache.
MacGruber BOMBED??????????????? WTF is wrong with America???????!!!!!!!!!!! It’s like you can’t experiment with anything in this biz that can’t be fucking merchandised to the extent of another beating out of a franchise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET ADVENTUROUS AMERICA, IT’S WHY THE QUALITY OF YOUR FILMS HAVE FALLEN HARDER THAN THE ECONOMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What did they expect from a movie based on a 1 minute sketch on SNL.
This movie has no juice. It is not Blues Brothers or Wayne’s World
No comparison to Ackroyd/Belushi and Myers/Carver.
It looks like this REALLY will be the final chapter for Shrek. Robin Hood is doing terrible. Iron Man 2 is doing quite well for a film with mixed reaction. I think it will make it to the 300 million dollar mark. Not bad Iron Man. Not great, but not bad either.
MAGRUBOMB!
Universal will now be renting out their bungalos for low income housing to make ends meet.
MacGruber was the funniest movie I have ever seen. I have never been to a movie where the entire audience laughed this hard. Word of mouth will make this movie a hit. I am going to see it again and I will buy it when it comes out on DVD. There are so many funny moments in this movie. It is well worth the price of admission and that is saying A LOT these days!
Unfortunately we all don’t have medical marijuana cards so we won’t be stoned when we see the film.
Electing to go this by-the-numbers, unimaginative, thoroughly weak-ass filmmaking route, they deserved to fail.
Rogue produced MacGruber, not Universal. Universal just distributed it for Rogue. Rogue is now a fully owned division of Realitivity Media, and MacGruber is just another in a long list of flops for Realitivity.
Finally, some who gets it. MacGruber is Relativity’s error, not Universal’s. Uni just put it out because they contractually have to.
That said, for a $10 million investment, why not take this risk? Had it opened to $12 million and made a measly $30 million theatrical, it would make a respectable profit over its lifespan.
I find it interesting that so many on these boards preach fiscal responsibility on budgets (see the numbers discussion from Hot Tub Time Machine) but MacGruber is being filleted now.
I am not saying MacGruber is anything more than the flop it is, but the Titanic doesn’t sink if it stays in shallow water.
Yeah that’s basically what my deleted comment was saying, only in longer terms. :p
Since Macgruber only had a budget of 10 mil, it will show a profit by it’s second week. I bet Shrek 4 will take much longer to make a profit…
