LOS ANGELES (May 4, 2010) __ KICK-ASS director Matthew Vaughn will helm X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, a new chapter in Twentieth Century Fox’s blockbuster series of films based on the Marvel Comics.
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS begins production this summer for a June 3, 2011 release. Bryan Singer, who conceived the story for FIRST CLASS and directed the original X-MEN and its sequel X2, is producing along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.
“I’ve been a fan of Matthew’s since LAYER CAKE,” said Singer. “He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-MEN universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-MEN film.”
Added Twentieth Century Fox president of production, Emma Watts: “X-MEN: FIRST CLASS presents an exciting opportunity to further explore the history and relationships of these beloved characters. Matthew’s combination of talent, verve and vision is perfectly suited to the task.”
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-MEN saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.

I’m a big fan of Layer Cake and Kick Ass so I’m gonna give this one a looksee, but with reasonable caution. I mean we’re talking Fox here, probably the worst output of movies a studio has ever produced in the last ten years. They just don’t give a shit about the superhero genre. Simple as that.
Agree with @alboone… didnt Fox and Vaughn already do this dance with X3? And look how that turned out…
Has anyone read josh Schwartz/ script? And is that the one they’re doing?
Fox loves to use good directors and for the most part waste their talents (Gavin Hood on the deplorable Wolverine comes to mind).
Sigh.
Other writers — particularly Kinberg — have come in after JS. This will be a frankenstein script (as were the first Iron Man, Spider-man and X Men movies). Seems to work just fine with superhero movies.
Not sure the Fox bashing makes sense — Avatar was THE SINGLE smartest bet of the last ten years, and the studio is responsible for PLENTY of good movies in that time period. Avatar 2 will be announced for Holiday 2013 by the end of 2010 (maybe way before). Notice how NO OTHER STUDIO is looking seriously at that release window. Duh.
Fox is one of the few stusios that makes real money: Simpsons, Star Wars, Chipmunks, X-Men, Family Guy. These are all 100M-in-profit-per film franchises (Family Guy movie in summer 2013, you heard it here first).
Just because before Avatar came out you didn’t think it could out-gross Titanic doesn’t mean Fox is a poorly run studio. They control costs, they control the brand, and they have a shitload of loyal worker bees there and a ton of valuable IP. It’s run like a (cheap) Swiss watch, to tell the truth.
Without Avatar this studio would have one of the longest stretches of lowbrow and cheap mill-made movies in the history of the industry from a major studio. It’s been embarrassing and sad to see from a company that used to stand out for supporting visionary filmmakers and original properties.
Maybe hiring Vaughn is an attempt to make amends but I’d be astonished to see him given the creative control he deserves.
Is it normal to make a film of this size in under a year? That seems like rushing it.
From Day One, Fox never cared about the X-Men franchise. Thanks to Bryan Singer, we got two great films and the rest was all downhill.
Yes, a prequel! Everybody loves prequels.
Isn’t Bryan’s press release sweet… and meaningless, but PC, seeing as he would much rather do this film than HACK THE CAREER KILLER, that he is now more than obliged to oversee… Can you hear the collective groan of all his fans, friends, co-workers, company, etc.? we wish we had you back on X, man.
Wha’evah.
Let’s hope that Fox is smart enough to hire a new writer to fix the script. The one by Zack Stentz is terrible as he is a no-talent hack. (Although the Miller pages are brilliant)
Yay, someone trashing me on Nikki Finke! I’ve arrived!
Seems like a smart move to me.
Saw Kick-Ass yesterday, and while I can totally understand the qualms a lot of people have with it (=Hit Girl), I found the film was well-made. Good pacing, nice pop culture references, great selection of songs. Comeptent direction of unknowns.
Doesn’t Kung Fu Panda 2 also come out on June 3?
Barring undue interference from FOX, I have confidence in Vaughn breathing new life into a franchise that seemed destined for HUGE things b4 B.Singer left after X2…Now that he’s overseeing this one I truly feel they’ll bring out what the people want
I think Vaughn’s a great choice; provided that the script is worth shooting to begin with. Vaughn knows how to give every member of a large cast a nice, satisfying story arc (see LAYER CAKE as proof) so a class of mutants could really come to life in his hands. But if the script doesn’t give him an interesting group to work with, he’s screwed from the get go.
Has anyone read the script? Which mutants show up? I, personally, would love to see Beast pre-fur; but that’s just me…
Fox is fast tracking every x-men film they can including first class. since they know no x film in production by a certain date marvel gets the rights back and that means Disney will be free to make x-men films. and if fox loses the x-men films rights it would be the start of the rest of the marvel universe they have the rights too. so fox like sony is pushing out films as fast just to keep the rights from Disney and no doubt they will repeat the same thing with Vaughn and x men 3
My dream is to play the young Magneto (27 years)! I ask the director Matthew Vaughn and producer Bryan Singer to draw their attention to me! The role of the young Magneto created for me! You can find me here! http://twitter.com/New_Magneto
