20th Century Fox has Spanish helmer Daniel Benmayor in the crosshairs to direct Hitman 2. Will original star Timothy Olyphant return? That is unclear at this point, but Benmayor will make his Hollywood debut on the sequel to the film based on the Eidos videogame about a master assassin. Fox is planning a fall production start.
Benmayor, the Barcelona-born NYU grad created a following shooting Spanish commercials for Sony PlayStation, Renault, Mercedes, Heineken and Samsung. His feature debut come on the Spanish language action film Paintball, in which adrenaline junkies get dropped in a dense forest for a paintball match, and find that someone is using real ammo. Benmayor just wrapped Bruc, about a 19th Century Catalan drummer boy who helps gives Napoleon’s army its first taste of defeat. Studio Canal releases the film in the fall. The director was signed by Verve, which is making the Hitman 2 deal.
The original Hitman grossed $100 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. Adrian Askarieh, Alex Young and Chuck Gordon are producing, and Daniel Alter is exec producer. Daniel Casey has written the most recent draft, which Kyle Ward was originally hired to write. The sequel includes elements from the vidgame Hitman 5. Agent 47, is a beaten man and must build himself back psychologically and physically to reclaim his mantle as world’s most feared assassin.
I’m told there is an option on Olyphant, but it’s unclear if he will shave his head and return as the killer. Hard to imagine the studio is going to do better than the understated performer, who is building momentum playing the trigger-happy lawman Raylan Givens in Justified, the FX series based on the Elmore Leonard novellas.

Olyphant didn’t exactly sound keen in this interview from The Guardian last month:
As for shaving his head in Hitman, he didn’t enjoy that as much. “That part I could have done without. I felt I’d spent years ducking that responsibility and that kind of commitment. But with that kind of movie there comes all kinds of baggage, and that stuff I find I could do without.”
Nobody will top Olyphant. Pay him whatever he wants.
Timothy Olyphant is what makes Justified the show it is – which a great show and all his. Shave that hair and it may throw the schedule off for the well-earned second season of Justified. He was great in Hitman but Justified is a must see gem and much of that if not all of it (for this fan at least)is because Timothy makes Raylan Givens relatable and fascinating. So if it is a choice, please let justified come first. time to cater to the acting gifts that are Timothy Olyphant. Thank you.
Walton Goggins is what makes “Justified” the show it is. Tim is terrific but Walt is great. They were very smart to bring him back after the first episode.
I wonder if the two “producers” Askariah and Alter will be allowed on the set of this one.
I thought the movie was produced by the french studio europa corp.
Unless Jason Stathom plays Agent 47, I wish they just not bother. Bad enough we got one bad Hitman movie without Stath. The man was born for that role.
I actually don’t see Statham playing this role at all. He doesn’t have the versitile acting capability. He’s a one demensional actor (and I like him) Tell me what other movie he was able to break from his usual persona aside from Lock Stock.
Love Statham, but smoke another one. Nobody replaces Olyphant in this rolel. I won’t watch it, otherwise.
HITMAN 2 without Olyphant? No way.
I’m sure he can part w/his hair if the price is right. And since scheduling works for other actors who work in series, it shouldn’t be impossible for Olyphant to work sth out. His hair will grow back in no time…
Timothy is so fine…and looks so sexy with a ball head…he shouldn’t stress over that..whatever downfalls hitman had was not because of the actor, but the writers. Unless Timothy is in the sequel I won’t even bother to see it.
Olyphant has never been convincing as a tough guy. Not sure why he keeps getting cast in these roles.
This was most painfully obvious in “Deadwood,” where he got repeatedly blown off the screen by the likes of Ian McShane and even Major Dad whenever he had the misfortune of sharing screen time with them. Olyphant would try his best, gritting his teeth and growling like a tough guy, but his stature and voice are so diminutive the effect was almost comic.
He’s perfect in the douchebag-sidekick roles, kudos to his agents for convincing people this softie is actually some kind of badass.
agreed. the guy sucks.
Hitman ain’t supposed to be a bad ass, cz that would be drawing lots of attention towards him…. he relies of his killer instincts and unmatched strategy to achieve his objective, he is supposed to be a calm guy with nerves of steel. Timothy is the perfect choice for the movie…. without him the movie is no good… it would be like filming a terminator movie without arnold
Your totally right.. People don’t understand the personality of agent 47 and think he’s just a killer with no feelings. Play the game and then comment!
Olyphant is great, but he doesnt even match the way the game presented agent 47. He doesn’t fit that role. How can you guys not admitt that the 2007 hitman movie sucked ass. It was a shitty low-budge peice of crap. 30 million ain’t low-budge, but the movie felt like some shitty B-movie. They didn’t give a shit about making a quality movie. They just needed to put something out that would sell.
Olyphant already stained himself with that role. Get someone new in there. Did you see the opening scene to the library in the level “run for your life” in hitman absolution. 47 is standing on a ledge, high up in the library as the police make there way inside to find him. The cameras start at his feet and pan up till it reaches his bald head and awesome blue eyes. it shows his whole face and, to me, he looks like Vinnie Jones. if the script writer and director could give a shit Vinnie Jones could easily and faithfuly be 47.
Tim Olyphant WAS the Hitman! Without him, you may as well just film me doing my laundry. Great storyline would be 47 going after a bad guy in North Korea and in the middle of it all he gets wind of the “powers to be” going after his girl Nika (Olga Kurylenko) at the vineyard he bought her in Italy. So now he has to wax the bad Korean, cross the globe to save her and then go back to the operatives and clean house on those who ordered the hit on his woman. Get Dougray Scott to reprise his role as Mike from Interpole to intercede for 47 to protect Nika at her farm against the hit team until 47 arrives for the showdown. Then together they go after the secret bad guys. I’d say there’s a good 90-120 minutes in there!
Pat, you should be the scriptwriter! That sounds awesome!
No. 47 would take out his woman if he was ordered to, and it would make a better movie. Twist ending or something.

I may not be a movie critic, but I have seen quite a few movies, and Pat, you need to send your ideas to hollywood, they really need help now, I swear, they have run completely out of ideas.
I love movies, I watch two a day, for decades (more than I would admit).
Do not ignore this comment, I am not the only one posting who like your ideas on this.
Sincerely,
JB
I am a grandmother who came to this movie on cable. I thoroughly enjoyed it and agree that Tim Olyphant is Hitman. He is not the obvious, he is cool calm and thoroughly accurate. It is called subtle. Pat’s storyline is great. Now write the scipt. I’ll pay for a movie ticket this time.
yeah Pat’s idea is great!:), could click!
While I haven’t seen HITMEN and he wasn’t so convincing as the bad guy in LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, Olyphant turned in a perfect portrayal as the dealer in GO. I think he’s better at playing the sleazy bad guy, but not the “take over the world” type.
Why Fox would greenlight HITMAN with a worldwide gross of $92M+ is baffling. Moviegoers said “No” the first time i.e. $40M domestic gross. If someone close to JAMES, TOM and EMMA is reading this, pass it along to them. Sure, Timothy is a talented actor. Doesn’t mean it’s smart to spend $60M budget (production + P&A) on the sequel. You think his exposure on Justified with current, steady TV ratings means more “potential” moviegoers watching Timothy in Hitman 2? Was Timothy the best casting choice for Agent 47? Or should this project have been greenlit in the first place? Maybe no to both.
Think again!
Agreed. A sequel to this movie is pointless. Didn’t do any business in the US and did fine overseas. Hardly a franchise unless they are thinking straight to DVD. Olyphant should pass on this one.
He may still be angry that his face was blacked out in many posters for the first movie. The one in the story is the first I’ve seen with his face fully visible.

This one seemed to be the one we got the most copies of.

All my friends watch it on FX and love it. smart move on Fox’s part, will be bigger than first. bring tim back.

He is an underrated actor. And Hitman was definitely a sleeper movie
I agree, he is underrated. I’d like to see him on some late night or daytime talk shows. I don’t know why he is constantly overlooked. Showbiz tonight and shows like that just show the same people with the boring stories over and over…instead of always talking about Tiger Woods…Lets talk about Timothy, now he’s interesting!
you suck for saying that. I actually liked the movie and not brother watching it again.
a sequel? to that POS movie? you’ve got to be kidding me. if Olyphant is smart he’ll steer WAY clear of this disaster in the making.
Please, don´t hold the deadwood role against him, Olyphant on Deadwood was the “civilization”, was the order among the much more interesting chaos-mongers in the other roles. He was the straight man playing the sheriff, but the whole point was whether the uninteresting agent of law could make a difference and he pulled that out in spades.
Olyphant can start out in the roll and then we could have Stathom come in as a rival and knock him off.
You don’t really know the hitman game do you? You just watched some dumb ass action movie and then saw this and started talking shit
I laugh at people dismissive of Olyphant – especially the people above slagging his Deadwood performance.
I caught Hitman on DVD a few months back and it’s the kind of movie that Hollywood used to churn out pretty competently a couple of decades ago (the mid to low budget actioner that on the whole somewhat entertaining and not shot with pro wrestlers and cardboard box sets). For the right budget this is certainly a better decision than another groin shot comedy aimed at kids.
You gotta see Timothy in HIGH LIFE, which finally came out on DVD recently. I saw it at a filmfest (only b/c of excellent WOM!) and had a ball. One of my fave comedies with more than one brilliantly written scene I can remember to this day. More than I can say about the majority of films…
Jesus, the first movie was so unbelievably terrible and inaccurate to its portrayal of Russia that I don’t wanna have anything to do with a sequel.
However, if that was its only problem, I’d forgive it. But the script, the dialog, the acting and the story were unwatchable as well. Fuck FOX. I hate them and almost every single movie they make. Fuckin’ right-wing idiots.
You all have it wrong! Vin Diesel should have been and probably will be the next Hitman! Enough said.
This’ll be straight to DVD starring whoever the next Richard Greco is.
Olyphant has a very likable air about him, unfortunately he is terrible as a tough guy. He is just not believable as a heavy. He can not pull off being a leading man. He was great in Damages, but they dropped the ball with his storyline and just wasted his talents whereas in Deadwood or Justified, his talents are just not suited for those kind of roles.
He probably should be doing romcoms.
Justified is kind of hit & miss with Olyphant being the only consistently good thing about it. However my favorite charater he has played was the bad cop on FX Network’s “Damages”. He coupled so perfectly with Rose Byrne’s lead character–Ellen, on that show. I think that’s what got him the starring role in Justified though; so can’t blame him for taking a pay raise.
He probably should jump at the chance to do another Hitman movie, just because franchise sequels don’t happen for most actors.
The world is craving a sequel to the “hit” HITMAN?
i can only speak for myself…it’s overdue…i am craving hitman 2, but only with Timothy..he is so fine and sexy and with a good script the sequel could be awesome…i am constantly checking online for the green light that the sequel is in the making starring the only one made for the role Tim O.
YES. Actual Hitman fans understood the first movie and are hungry to see another genious plot.
Odviously none of the above comments were made from a person that played the Hitman games on Xbox or Playstation. He fits the role great and he had the character down to a T. I personally cant wait for a sequel, I hope it comes sooner rather then later. I also like Tim in Justified. He fits in every role i have seen him in. I think some of you just cant get Diesel out of your heads. There are not many movies of his at all that are worth watching. Opinion of course…
I completely agree. If any of these other posters had even ever seen the games being played they would know that Timothy Olyphant is the only man for the role. And as to the comments that he doesn’t make a good B.A, you’re all totaly blind! While Statham is great at kicking butt and all he doesn’t have the acting chops to pull off the darkness that lays underneath 47′s cool, calm and collected demeanor.
I very much agree. Tim portrayal of a man waking up emotionally. A man who was raised not to show or even have emotions. I also have to mention that Tim’s mannerisms made the character more believable. I do love Jason and Vin, but I do not see them having that same walk….so if no Tim then I will not be seeing the sequel.
Where do you live? I wanna shake your hand
But jason statham does not suit the role, they have find sumone who looks like hitman and talks like him to, we dont want hit man with a south end gang accent like statham do we
