I’ve been doing complete season listings of all broadcast series ranked by adults 18-49 rating and total viewer average for years, and a lot of people in the TV industry have told me they find them very helpful. So here they are: the series rankers for the 2009-10 season in adults 18-49 and total viewers (scroll down for that). A few fun facts from the lists: The highest-rated new series this past season: CBS’ Undercover Boss. The highest-rated new scripted series: Fox’s Glee (in 18-49) and CBS’ NCIS: LA (in total viewers). The highest-rated series to get canceled: Fox’s 24. The lowest-rated scripted series to get renewed on the Big 4 networks: CBS’ Medium (in 18-49) and NBC’s Parks & Recreation (in total viewers).

WHOA! – #50 THE APPRENTICE 9 NBC 8,075
Donald Trump won’t believe that. He’s going to have you fired Nellie
So, 90210 is doing barely better than Melrose Place, yet is in no danger of being canceled?
So, Gossip Girl, which I was under the mistaken impression was a hit for CW, is doing worse than the ancient Smallville, which has the worst time slot?
So, the CW’s prospective Friday night lineup has higher ratings than their prospective Tuesday night lineup? Why don’t they flip them for better across the board ratings? More males will tune in Tuesdays and females are available Fridays, especially with some of their favorites not returning next fall, like Ghost Whisperer.
Am I crazy? Is the CW crazy? Who is taking the crazy pills here?
You’re not crazy. Its the hype around Gossip Girl. CW wants to keep it because of that hype. I guess they figure it will cause more sampling/free promotion for other shows.
Smallville would have been canceled years ago … except that Time-Warner is in dispute with the Siegel and Schuster estates, and there was some interest in using the show to promote other DC heroes.
Smallville hasn’t been in danger. Been one of their strongest shows always and sells a lot of dvds for the studios.
SMALLVILLE has been cancelled effective the end of the 2010-2011 season. So it is beyond danger at this point. (I’m a fan and watch it live and not on DVR so I’m not sniping at it.)
Most people misunderstand the CW business model. It tries to get sweetheart deals on syndication and then keep shows alive long enough to profit from syndicating those series. It does not have that arrangement with all of the shows on its line up, including SMALLVILLE and SUPERNATURAL, so it doesn’t care as much for those shows.
That is why it will tolerate abysmal ratings from GOSSIP GIRL. Also it and some of the other shows do great in their target demographic.
I would like to hear that SMALLVILLE has been cancelled only to be replaced by a new show called METROPOLIS.
I watch 45 to 55 shows a year because I work within TV Studies. I find it amazing how few shows I watch in the Top 25. Nearly everything I watch either is relatively low rated or on cable. The only two shows I watched this year in the Top Ten were BIG BANG and LOST.
Smallville WASN’T cancelled. It was agreed upon that it would be the final season. Nobody pulled the plug on the show. It is just coming to a natural end.
Gossip Girl’s 18-49 #s are equal to that of Smallville n Supernatural. At this point, I think CW has given up on paying attention to total viewers except in cases of extreme flop-dom (MELROSE PLACE, HAH). GG also outdraws both Smallville and Supernatural in it’s more coveted female audience. CW is all about attracting it’s niche. It’s the only thing they have going for them at this point…
The article leaves out the 18-34 women rankings, which are most important for shows on the CW. There, Gossip Girl does very nicely. As for the person who claimed that GG is being kept because of its “hype,” that is a ridiculous statement. For one thing, the show is no longer hot (though I still love it). For another, hype does not translate to money. It’s still around because it has the proper viewership to justify it. And creaky Smallville is dead after next season no matter what. FINALLY. It really got lame after Lex left.
Heroes was doing much better than Chuck in the demo, but NBC killed Heroes and saved Chuck. Was that really the right decision? Heroes was no doubt more expensive, but they could have always pared down the cast and cut costs.
It was the right call because Chuck still had most of its fans on board while Heroes was terminally declining. Mostly from soapy plots designed to appeal to female fans that turned off the core male audience.
Chuck had that in part … but not as bad and not as long.
Really, for a show about Superheroes, Heroes had almost no superheroics, instead artsy plots that went nowhere, like Lost but more incoherent, and soapy stuff. Which female viewers could get better done, and more soapy, on things like Desperate Housewives.
Ultimately no show is ever renewed based on fans, Heroes had more viewers and more 18-49 overall at the end of day. However the network felt Chuck could rebound better (even thought Heroes is big internationally, DVD sales and produced by Universal).
Fans make no difference, its the ratings. If one show has more viewers but less fans its gets renewed before the show with much less but lots of fans (Dollhouse, Moonlight, Pushing Daisies etc…).
To think fans will ever have anything to do with renewing a show is foolish (unless they buy massive amounts of DVDs but Chuck fans don’t seem to – at least no where near on the scale of Heroes or Lost. To the point that makes them exceptional), TV is a business, just liking a show is meaningless to the networks.
P.S. In my opinion the fall of quality in Chuck has been happening since the middle of the second season, there’s just not that much to tell. I didn’t like the third season much (though not to say it was bad), I preffered Heroes fourth season to that.
I wanted Heroes to continue more than anything but by the finale it hit a series low and did even worse than Chuck. I had hoped since it’s still an international sensation that it would still get renewed. It is really the one show that never recovered from the writers strike — it couldn’t air new episodes for 9 months and that is just too long of a break.
You’re right about Heroes being more expensive, which did play a part in it. That said, the main reason is because Heroes started out with big ratings and dropped drastically due to bad writing/storyline. Chuck, on the other hand, started out with very modest ratings and they are now gradually impoving. Chuck, whether you like it or not, is showing a lot of promise.
Cutting costs/cast on a dwindling show is certainly not going to turn it around. Heroes was just done. Maybe they will do some kind of movie/mini-series to give closure, but NBC made the right move here.
The buzz was not in its favor. Chuck still gets positive headlines, whereas the story for Heroes for three years running has been about how much it sucks. Add a much higher cost to that, and it’s a sensible decision.
Keep in mind that the ratings that determine these rankings are *averages* over the course of the season. The simple fact of the matter is that the ratings for Heroes in both demos and total Households collapsed in the second half of its season. For example, the overnight ratings for Feb. 8, a regular episode of Chuck and the season/series finale of Heroes, Chuck’s ratings were: Demo — 2.3 million/6, and Total Viewers: 6.60 million), while Heroes scored: Demo — 2.1 million/5 and Total Viewers: 4.41 million.
Chuck is 1) a less expensive show that b) is firing on all cylinders creatively and 3) less importantly, but still significantly, is attracting viewers outside the demo.
Heroes is 1) a more expensive show that b) was not well-received by critics or viewers (I liked it, but still . . . be honest, it was underwhelming) and 3) less importantly, but still significantly, it was alienating viewers outside the demo. It had no remaining potential whatsoever to grow its audience.
The decisions to renew Chuck and to cancel Heroes were no-brainers.
— Rob
If you want to compare ratings, then look at each season finale. While at one point Chuck was better than Heroes, it seems that Chuck panned out much like Heroes’s fourth season. Eventually falling below the show on average ratings (in fact Chuck had higher earlier ratings to begin with so its average should be higher than Heroes – which means Chuck had to fall quite a bit to loose to the show). I mean Heroes may have finaled with a 2.0 in the demo, but Chuck’s two-hour finale (not even against House) pulled in a lowly 1.7 in the demo. Heroes overall had a better season. However The network must feel that Chuck has a higher chance of rebounding, both shows were evenish (in fact its arguable that Heroes large international status, DVD sales and being produced by NBC’s family company that it should have been renewed).
Sadly the ratings above for all shows factor in DVR, which means the 18-49 are relatively useless because Heroes won’t get much money on the extra few demo points. I think on a live viewing basis Heroes averaged a 2.3, Chuck slightly below. However it does show Heroes still has a bigger overall audience that Chuck.
Sadly I will miss Heroes. Though I will also miss Chuck when it is likely cancelled this fall or next may.
Wasn’t American Dad the series that was part of the legal battles between Cory Edwards (music producer), and Seth Macfarlane?
YES. It’s a GOOD decision.
Lost wasn’t getting exciting anymore.
I hope The Good Wife can increase in viewership this year. It’s such a good show, deserves more attention.
Also I hope CBS moving Medium to 8 PM will help its ratings.
Also, these are ranked on total viewers. Not that it doesn’t mean anything, but most networks care more about reaching the 18-49 year old demographic. Ranking them with that demo would definitely change the rankings a lot. Advertisers pay a price based on how many 18-49 year olds a show reaches, which dictates how much profit a show makes. Which in turn is how networks decide whether or not a show gets renewed or cancelled.
oops, nevermind. I see them now.
Not sure I beleive that House beat 2.5 in the 18 – 49, not even by .1 Men is usual one of the two or three highest in that demo. House was down for at least half the season in particular the last six weeks.
No Monday Night Football?
And 6,016,000 people will never get this hour back: THE JAY LENO SHOW-TUE NBC 6,016
wait… i think they changed MNF to Sundays…oops.
Ummm, didn’t Supernatural get renewed, and wouldn’t THAT be the lowest rated scripted show to be renewed?
No, 90210 would be the lowest rated to be renewed.
Supernatural is fantastic. Actors and scrips great. This show should be at the top of the list.
I totally agree, I almost vomit after going through this list. I am a woman (a very feminine woman) and I am sick and tired of the horrible whining gossipy, way too talkative soapy shows. I am fed up with shows where teenagers in their 14-19s are completely whipped out of innocence, naivety, freshness, joy and are rather tired, schemy, and manipulative, like they are in there 40s. What is wrong with America? Kids here in Scandinavia are nothing like it. But I’m afraid Hollywood is going to brainwash them soon enough. Supernatural is entertaining, unique, and with great actors. It has action, it has thriller, it has comedy, it has tears, it has love, and it has hot guys and girls in it without the very long tiring conversations about petty stuff. And they introduce you to the word of supernatural in a very believable manor. Shows like the bachelor/bachelorette, Gossip girl, Melrose Place, One tree Hill, Dawson’s creek, and Desperate housewives should be shown in daytime with The bold and the beautiful, and Days of our lives- to home sitting housewives who doesn’t have all that nastiness in their life and can dream away about cheating on their husbands with the pool guy, or the handy man or gossip all day about how their life sucks. (Yekk Yekk Yekk!!!) Damn I can hardly turn on a channel without facing one lame, boring, soapy show after another, that makes me want to hang the whole human race.
Now these are some of the entertaining shows: (not necessarily in this order though)
Supernatural, Lie to me , Bones , CSI , CSI Miami, So You Think You Can Dance , American idol, The big bang theory, The Simpsons, Cougar town, Castle, The mentalist, The Good Wife, Medium, 60 Minutes, Haven (promising), and last but not least The Closer.
Oh, and most of the reality shows, like Paradise Hotel, Or those morally challenges rich teenagers on their 16th birthdays with distasteful parties, Vacation on Ibiza or Cruise or those horrible bradzilla (bride) shows makes me want to shoot myself or the TV.
The more I come across these shows, the less I want to watch TV.
What numbers are these? If they are live, or live same day then they aren’t accurate at all. Now the coulb be c3, or live plus 7, as I don’t get those.
This is the first time I have ever seen this list, very cool information. Is this info compiled using just Nielsen ratings or are Tivo and other DVR device statistics being used?
I noticed that there was not a single cable television program listed. Is that because they are not ‘broadcast?’ The lack of Monday Night Football, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and The Colbert Report is kind of glaring.
Makes me wonder if network ratings are even relevant anymore.
Wildly distorted by lead-ins, among other factors. For example, Glee got a huge boost in the second half of the season by following American Idol.
Not bad by Supernatural, I hope when the storyline gets back to like it was in season 1 it does better!
I honestly think that shows like 90210, GG and Supernatural are still in because the CW gets a ton of money from them. Those three are internationally successful and also bring money from syndication. I honestly love the CW, because its a young network and wants to attract the younger audiences with shows aimed to them, and also the females. But I agree that the Friday and Tuesday schedules should be switched, but a show like LUX won’t be able to survive on a Friday night and OTH will be doomed, if it happens.
Just wanted to say, I love the show “Medium” I stay up late Mon. thru Fri. watching the reruns. It’s great. Patricia Arquette is great, the whole crew of actresses and actors are great as well!!!!
Well all I know is that I’m 49 and a woman, and the only “show” that was number 1 to me was Supernatural. All the others I could careless for. I usually watch TNT mostly anyways, then CW and ION, CBS for Criminal Minds and Cold Case. I like sometimes Dancing with the Stars. but that’s about it.
So I hope they stay! GG and Melrose Place and 90310 to me are a waste of time and boring. But I’m not into soaps either. I like crime dramas mostly.
I’m 52 and don’t even fall into the 18-49 category. Supernatural is number 1 with me followed by True Blood on cable. I also watch The Vampire Diaries, Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Lost, Big Bang and Fringe. I don’t like what the normal populous watches and that’s what seems to get the biggest ratings. I think that shows like Supernatural have an excellent following and even though there may not be as many people watching the show, its ratings are just as high for the smaller audience who do watch it. Ratings, schmatings!
What matters is now where Supernatural ranks over all but where it ranks against other CW shows – and from that perspective Supernatural Kicks it in the Butt
Zaz
Ok don’t live in America however you cancel shows which are pulling in higher viewers? & actually deserve to come back – ie Rob Morrow, David K (NUMB3RS)
Very sad when its just for commercial reasons to take them down or expense. This year I got to agree you guys are cancelling way to many good shows.
Supernatural deserves a better place.
I”m 42 and a woman and THE ONE ONLY show that is NUMBER 1 in my books is SUPERNATURAL.All the other i could careless for…………so I’m very up set that my show is that low in the rating???? They have a geat cost and story lines….
How come Cold Case was cancelled when it was doing better than some of these shows that were saved? It’s messed up that’s how I see it!
Can’t Believe Supernatural is so low!!!!!!!!!!
It Tps most other shows out there and its far better than American Idol. It deservesa top rankng. People know good shows from the bad. Also Vampire Diaries deserves better as well.!!!!!!!
The only show I have found people watching consistantly through different demographics is Supernatural. People I would have never expected to even know what the show was are faithful to it & can’t wait until the next season starts. I know I just can’t seem to get enough!!
Seriously, all I get from this comments is people just love Supernatural, like I do. So I really don’t get how can it be so low in the rankings. <3 Supernatural!!
That rating is limited to demographic US right? You’d be surprised how popular Supernatural is in other countries. DVD sells great as well. Given that, I don’t think Supernatural is in any danger.
