EXCLUSIVE: Back in January, I told you about the effort to mount Machine Gun Preacher, a fact-based drama directed by Marc Forster. Gerard Butler was keen to play reformed bad guy Sam Childers, a drug-dealing biker who found God and became the scourge of rebel forces who kidnap children in the Sudan and Northern Uganda and force them to become sex slaves or child soldiers. Well, the film’s is now a reality, as Lionsgate has committed to be domestic distributor, and Mandate International handling foreign sales. Shooting starts this summer.
Michelle Monaghan has just committed to play Childers’ wife, Lynn, who cleaned up her own demons while Childers did a stretch behind bars, and struggled to keep their family together in Detroit while he went to Africa to establish an orphanage to house 300 children. He had to stay there and run an armed militia to protect the kids and thwart other kidnappings by rebels under the command of Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army.
Michael Shannon is also in talks to join the film, playing a close friend of Childers who stayed with his wife while he was away in Africa. His character is pivotal in the plot.
Forster is producing with Robbie Brenner, Craig Chapman, Gary Safady and Debora Giarratana. Brad Simpson and Myles Nestel are executive producers.
Safady (a real estate entrepreneur who paid for development) and Nestel were key to getting the picture funded. The script was written by Jason Keller from Childer’s memoir Another Man’s War: The True Story of One Man’s Battle to Save Children in the Sudan.
The film is a real chance for Butler to show some of that raging intensity he displayed as King Leonidas in 300, but it’s also his chance to show some real acting chops. Because of Forster’s rapport with actors, that’s the same opportunity awaiting Shannon and Monaghan. In the case of Monaghan, she won a role that was coveted by all the young actresses in town. Monaghan recently completed the Sofia Coppola-directed Somewhere, the Todd Phillips comedy Due Date and she just wrapped Source Code opposite Jake Gyllenhaal.
Get a glimpse of the real Sam Childers and his work, below.

Looks good.
Lessee: Butler is hero. Check. Monaghan, his wife (ir girlfriend role). Check. Michael Shannon, “pivotal in the plot?” Can you say, B-A-D G-U-Y?
Der.
This movie is going to move souls, heal hearts, and shine a light on a path that God wants us all to walk…
I pray that Gerard will understand the man within, the man God intended him to be….
I can’t wait until this movie is released however, will wait given it all about the journey and not the end result!!
In prayer,
Kristine
Please tell me they’ll film in Detroit for the on site scenes!! Any clue on locations yet?
They are filming in The D
Love the inference that somehow LG is different than Mandate. LG owns Mandate. So LG is completely financing the film and selling the international rights through their foreign sales arm. Let’s just be specific. Mandate isn’t “financing’ the film.
Script is not so good.
I can’t wait to see it
All well and good, but Butler better get the nod for Mitch Rapp. I can take all the romcoms he does, as long as he gets to play Mitch Rapp. He is Vince Flynn’s choice, that should seal the deal.
Looks like a great source for a movie. I just hope they don’t hollywoodize it.
cast, director, and script r great. and a TRUE STORY. can’t wait
How many movies will it take for folks to realize that no one wants to see Gerard Butler in anything?
Except his movies have accumulated over half a billion dollars. And that’s just domestic take. Admittedly he wasn’t necessarily the draw in those pictures, but how many actors are ‘destination’ stars any more?
Your are really silly. If you don´t like so shut up about him and look to those you like. Nobody wants to listen stupid opinions
Good cast, good director. Interesting story. Looking forward to it.
I can’t wait to see this movie on Gerard. He is a fine & good actor & he can do anything. My favorite movie on him is Bounty Hunter with Jennifer & I can’t wait to see them together as a couple. Hope & pray for them.
OMG.
OMG Dittos! Really? Great trailer for BH, but that was the whole movie. PS I love You if you are going the chick flick route. And BTW, the relationship was contrived to get publicity for the movie.
Michael Shannon? “Show some acting chops?” Are you kidding? The dude was nominated for a frickin’ Oscar, and he’s downright perfect in “Shotgun Stories.” Shannon has shown his chops. He’s one of the most exciting actors in Hollywood. No doubt.
Shannon is a GREAT actor, just see BUG.
Paging George Clooney. Was the positive Christian aspect too much to bring your vaulted Hollywood status to any aspect of this movie production, George? Why so mute on Sudan now?
A biopic based on reality and not a socialist utopia radical. Looking forward to it.
Butler has proven himself in every movie genre possible. He is
one of the greatest actors of this time. He puts his very soul
into every role he portrays, so I know this will be a great
movie.
He also chooses his roles wisely and for some purpose. I am sure
this one is to get the message of this crisis in the Sudan out to
the world so that others can respond and help resolve the monstrosoties being conducted there.
I only hope this role does not cause him very much emotional pain.
He tends to live his roles and sinking his spirit into this one
will surely leave emotional scars for him to deal with.
Thank you, Gerry, for keeping the faith and taking on this role.
I am sure God will bless you for your efforts.
This guy is single-handedly ruining all the good work that is being done in East Africa. For those who haven’t been over and seen what it’s like on the ground – which includes the people making the movie – I can only hope that this idiot’s narrow-minded actions do not turn him into some cultural icon in America. The LAST thing Africa needs is another white knight with a great story behind him but with no real truth to it in reality.
fyi, director writer and producer all went deep into Sudan for weeks to research this movie.
well for your information I know sam…. He is my preacher. and the things he has dona are real. he’s way more than just another white night. and you shouldn’t judge him.
Do you know when and where they are going to start production?
I heard Atlanta in July and south africa after that.
This is bad news. A film like this needs a good actor, which GB certainly is not. Could be a great film, but they would need a better man to make it work.
They are going to film in Detroit and Africa. They are sourcing out locations to film at in Detroit as of the moment. They dont have exact locations set as of yet. Just a bunch of places they have in mind. Cant say anymore because I dont want to get sued by LionsGate. It’s going to be a good movie though. Everyone should check it out.
Gerard Butler is an excellent actor, the most gorgeous Phantom ever. He hasn’t had opportunity for a real good film after POTO and PS I love you, though the love comedies are all right.
Love him.
I believe the extreme explosive change that happened to Sam Childers heart and spirit that drove Sam into the wilderness of Africa to be willing to risk his life to save the lives of others is the secret to this roll for Gerard. I pray that same mysterious Extreme Explosive Change will happen in Gerry’s heart and spirit. This could be a life altering experience and his Academy Award performance.
Prayers for Sam and his mission, and Gerry’s life to be blessed.
Read my post below
They are filming in a city just outside of Detroit. I know because I live in that city. There is cast and crew everywhere. I have yet to see Gerard and this filming is the talk of this little city.
Finally a worthy movie is being made. Aren’t we all sick of the meaningless over indulgent films being made presently. We need more real meaningful films that make us want to go back to the movies. Thank you Gerard for being man enough to take on such a worthy roll. I know you will bring heart felt intensity to your portrayal. I can totally see you ripping into this character. Thank you for using your stardom in such a positive way. You have entered a new level of respect for alot of people.
A real southern lady,
Kelly
They filmed some of the movie at a church and community center around the couner from my house. My son had the priviledge of meeting Gerard and Michelle…
