Tim Kring just issued a statement addressing NBC’s cancellation of Heroes. The network is still looking to possibly do a Heroes movie for next season and plans to discuss the idea with Kring after the upfront:
I want to first extend my deepest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to the legion of enthusiastic fans who have watched ‘Heroes’ on TV, online, DVR, DVD and mobile over the last four seasons. Every week more than 45 million TV viewers around the world, as well as millions of social and digital media-based fans, have made ‘Heroes’ one of the five most-watched shows across traditional and digital media screens in the history of television. For NBC, I certainly understand the challenge of creating a business model around a show which arrived precisely as the audience was finding new ways to watch traditional content on multiple screens. I personally have had 12 great years with my friends at NBC, and with ‘Heroes,’ they provided me a rare opportunity to put a message of hope, interconnectivity and global consciousness into the world. For that I am grateful and look forward to finalizing our discussion about a number of ways to keep the ‘Heroes’ universe alive for its fans.

“interconnectivity and global consciousness into the world.” Really? ‘Heroes?’
Yeah Tim, you’re a regular Bono. Yeesh, people’s overinflated sense of self never ceases to amaze me.
And Bono’s just a regular douche. really not all he’s cracked out to be
That was the point
Bono is a stud. And you’re an idiot.
What’s the difference between Bono and Jesus Christ?
Jesus Christ doesn’t walk down O’Connell Street thinking he’s Bono.
Ive been a die hard fan since the 1st episode and have followed the graphic novels. Despite my disappointment that heroes has been cancelled im really quite greatful for the inspiration i got from watching it. Superpowers aside… it highlighted how connected the world is without us realising it. It was awsome to see heroes incorporated from all parts of the globe from many different backgrounds. its not just the beautiful people or the rich people that save the world
maybe i look too deep but i found many latent aspects of the show inspiring and i share this opinion with many of my precious people.
thanks for the adventure.
kind regards,
Charl Smit (South Africa)
Here’s hoping Kring can convince NBC to cough up just enough money to do a wrapup mini or movie. I wonder if he’ll ever work in H’wood again; he’s been blamed for everything short of Hurricane Katrina and harboring Polanski. Ah well; he survived Teen Wolf Too!
Heroes was great – all this negativity is by people who ought to put up or shut up – if you can do a better series , go for it, otherwise stop whingeing and whining. Tim Kring did a great job complete with writer’s strikes and typical budget issues – try writing an episode yourself , if it’s any good take it to a network and see how much effort is involved in making anything of this proportion . Kring rocks !
translation: “I can’t believe they let me rip off X-men without any of the good parts for the last few seaons, and are considering giving me 2 more hours to wrap it up. Maybe they’re give me a budget to actually show a fight sequence for once…well, probably not”
Your an idiot…I really liked this show and so did millions of other people. In case you did not read what he wrote it was one of the most popular shows in the history of television, but I guess NBC should ask you to make a better show since you are so smart and easy to judge.
“For NBC, I certainly understand the challenge of creating a business model around a show which arrived precisely as the audience was finding new ways to watch traditional content on multiple screens.”
Nope – your show just sucked (after a promising beginning), and got cancelled. Shifting blame unto the changing media landscape is just silly and, in my opinion, shows the tunnel mentality that helped put a nail in HEROES’ casket. Had the show been written well, the outcome would be very, very different (see: LOST).
I tend to agree. I *am* one of the audience who uses “new ways to view traditional content on multiple screens” — which makes me feel that the real problem wasn’t that NBC and the advertisers couldn’t see all the people who were watching the show, but rather that people stopped watching the show.
I really loved the first season, but after that…well, it fell apart, basically, and poor writing is to blame. As it kept getting worse, many of the fans from that first season (including me) started to drift away, and eventually abandoned the show entirely. And since it’s so god-awful hard to attract new viewers to continuity-heavy series these days, the show was totally doomed. I don’t doubt that it would’ve been canceled earlier if it had always sold ad space the way other shows did; and indeed, once it had to, the axe fell pretty swiftly.
Kudos to Kring if he can con NBC executives into giving him the money to do a 2-hour wrap-up (tip: I’m told they are easily mesmerized by shiny things, such as bits of foil tied to strings). Otherwise, the best thing he can do is to move on to something different and try to learn something from the mistakes made on Heroes.
THIS WAS THE BEST SHOW EVER MADE, YOU MAYBE ARENT “EVOLVED” SO MAYBE THATS WHY YOU DID NOT LIKE IT! F*CK U!
I agree, it was one of my favorite shows, and I continued to enjoy it even after season one, but that last season was complete rubbish. That carnival story arc was one of the most boring things on television, which is pretty ridiculous considering we live in an age where good television is diminishing. IMO flash forward was a much better show (compared to the last season of heroes only), and even that got canceled. These days people would rather watch third-rate has-been celebrities thumb wrestle. Its sad really.
I actually thought the season 4 arc was good. It was the first time they got away from the “evil company/government agency” story line. Season 3 was honestly the shows downfall. Everyone loved S1, S2 had the writers strike so everyone stuck with the show after it awkwardly ended, and then they totally dropped the ball in S3. They killed and revived Ali Larter one too many times, Danko’s character was an awful antagonist. S4 was a step in the right direction I think. The new characters gave it fresh life. NBC should have let them do a 13 episode finale.
Clearly you have no idea what you’re talking about. All shows go through change and never have a constant epicness to them. Lost is definitely not a show that constantly leaves you on your feet. Hence filler episodes in even the greatest of shows. Season 4 was unbelievable. Your excuse that it’s writing sucked is completely invalid, because if it were true, Heroes would be the most popular show in television after season 4. NBC cancels it? For what? Chuck? Celebrity Apprentice? It’s unbelievable. NBC just screws over its viewers.
NBC is known for canceling shows at a whim.. there were several shows I started to watch, really liked and then they dropped ‘em like a hot potato.. leaving the fans empty handed.. I don’t think I’m going to watch NBC shows any more.. I don’t want to be let down AGAIN..
By season 4, Heroes had lost HALF it’s viewers. Season 4 was complete garbage.
Ok, i like both shows. i’ve watched the complete seasons of both shows. At least heroes didn’t have the chance to disappoint its followers the way Lost did. It would have been well written, if only they’d known what the hell they were going to end it with. Come on, cop out, are you seriously going to use lost’s finale as the example of good writing, and worse, different outcome? If I could go back in time I wouldn’t watch it, just to spare me the bitterness of it all.
I have watched all of Heroes and I loved it until the last season, but I still stuck with it. I think it is so much better than lost was. I just wish the world blew up in season 2 and the show ended then.
You can’t compare LOST to Heroes, I am glad Tim Kring is thinking about wrapping up the show with a mini-series or tv movie. I loved the first season and the following seasons with it. I believe the problem that hurt the show the most was the Writer’s Strike. If it had not even been for that, this show probably would of been hitting at least seven or more seasons like Smallville. Even that show was a horse that has sprinted it’s last lap. I agree that the writing did not go too well as the seasons followed but ever since that strike, writer’s just got lazier and lazier. Seriously, LOST, a cloud that chases the survivors on a frickin’ island, lame.
In what world is Kring living in? Yeah it was popular back during the first and second season but after that it all went downhill. Horrible writing, storyline and acting destroyed the show. I was a Heroes fan but now I could careless if they end it or not. It’s probably going to be pretty bad anyway.
It went downhill at the END of the first season.
So he’s still in the denial stage of grief, I see.
Poor Heroes. I’ve never watched a show that fell so hard, so fast. I gave up on it halfway through Season 3.
So I assume you didn´t watch Flashforward?
Thanks for sharing the information – I reposted here at 9thWonders! for the HEROES fans over there.
From where was the statement issued? NBCUMV?
Thanks again!
Another casualty of the writer’s strike…
Really 45 milion a week if that were the case you’d still be on TV.
Agreed — 45 million viewers??!?! What you’re the SuperBowl, now?!?!?
Sheesh. I love hearing this guy try to show class in the face of the cancellation and insult the very people he’s trying to kiss up to at the same time. doesn’t work that way Tim.
Probably why the show got cancelled — HE JUST DIDN’T GET IT.
You clearly don’t get it. Heroes has an ENORMOUS worldwide audience that is incomparable to hardly anything else on television today. It’s a fact. The SuperBowl only happens once a year, and yet millions and millions of fans all over the world just got screwed by NBC – the largest money whore of all networks.
It said “45 million viewers AROUND THE WORLD”. The world is not just the US.
You took the words right out of my mouth
At least the first two seasons got lots of viewers on Universal Channel here in Argentina.
I’m deeply sorry that Heroes is over!!! I saw it from the beginning and, even when in my country (Argentina) is still on screen, I already knew that it has been cancelled. I’m a hgie fan of Heroes and I want to thank Tim Kring for giving us the oportunity of seeing such a great show!!!
HEROES IS NOT DEAD!!!
Heroes was awesome. Shame on all of you for knocking it. I realy hope he gets a budget for a grand ‘finale’. I dont care if it had 45 million viewers, or just 45, it was still awesome! Thanks to Tim Kring for bringing us so many hours of entertainment!
Angling for a rich new development deal somewhere. Good luck with that.
IMHO, the problem with genre shows like Heroes is that once the mystery is over and all the secrets come out of the shadows there’s just not any stakes or urgency left. In this case, the first season was fantastic because the people with superheroes were all underground and there was this urgent ticking time clock of the bomb in New York. It was all a mystery, and each week there was a new revelation (holy crap, that politician guy can fly! That creepy killer just found out about the Indian guy!) But, over time, more and more superheroes were discovered, the world becomes aware of their existence so the fantastic becomes *normal* and all the secrets were revealed.
In short, the mystery is gone. The stakes and urgency just aren’t there any more.
See Lost and The X-Files for the same effect.
Oops, I meant for “the people with superheroes were all underground” to say “the people with super *powers* were all underground.” Now you can feel free to heap praise on me.
The problem with the secrets coming out was that they turned the deep dark controlling mystering into a family buisness of bad bad guys. It probably would of helped if they actually tried for something better then the petreli’s past band of wannabe’s gone “villany”.
Conan should take notes from Tim Kring.
Ha, taking cheap shots at Conan on an article about Heroes. That sir is lack of class.
Yes, the show started with great promise indeed. Unfortunately, they seemed to only have one idea which they bascially redid over and over again: New heroes are discovered, good and bad teams are formed and then they have to save the cheerleader. Someone dies, but then they come back next season. They did that for 4 seasons! They never moved the characters or the story forward in any real way. I really enjoyed the show the first season, lost interest in the second & third and gave up after that. Too bad – a waste of a great concept.
Don’t forget the ever so story-logical move of replacing Sylar’s memory with Nathan’s instead of giving him a freakin transfusion of his own daughter/regenerative cheerleader and get it over with. Lame attempt to change the subject, innit?
Thats what happens when you use time travel! You can change things that affect an outcome of a story but it may be too much for some people. Now were stuck with stupid reality shows.
Definitely a classy statement from a good guy.
That said, if he was trying to blame NBC or the changing media landscape for the reason why it was cancelled, then that is just not accurate. The ratings dropped big time from season 1 due to bad writing/storyline. I can’t tell you how many people I knew who loved watching season 1 and said it went downhill after that.
Hopefully they can do some kind of movie or something to bring the few fans who stil watched it some closure.
he destroyed this show. fuller was the only reason season 1 was good
Sadly, new-media platforms does not equal money. It’s scary to think that if his numbers are accurate regarding all the cross platform hits, that it’s not enough to keep a show on TV.
I wonder when we are going to catch up.
Right right, Tim. It was the changing face of television that killed your show, not inane storylines and clunky writing.
“And I’m really, really sorry I didn’t have a clue where to go with the show after the first season.”
i loved Heroes when it first aired on the BBC. Season 1 was fantastic. Season 2, less so and I stopped tuning in after that. I think it was a great programme that lost its way and the trust of the audience. I think axing it was the only way to go.
I find it amazing how network TV creates a fabulous show (Heroes) with a large fan base and then cancels it. What’s the deal? You’ve just left many hanging without any resolution to the fate of all the characters! You need to close the loop with the fan base. We need closure!
does everyone remember firefly
I enjoyed firefly quite a bit, and I thought it met it’s end way too quickly. It sure as heck beats Stargate Universe, which is painful to watch compared to the awesomeness of SG-1. I think Heroes had some pretty decent characters and had a lot of potential with all those abilities. It was sad to see the writing dwindle, and overall I felt the series declining toward it’s bittersweet ending. My favorite character was Hiro. Least favorite was Nathan, with most of the Petrelli’s closely following. Loved Claire-bear, and Sylar even though they ruined him by redeeming him. Hard series to stomach, but I watched them all in spite of it. Maybe I just like the idea that Tim Kring wasn’t afraid to bend the rules.
I too, am tired of networks cancelling programs at a whim and replacing them with substandard programming…ie firefly. Heroes started out fantastinc but about half way through season two the writing went down hill and plummeted; I stuck with it for closure and got what…another early cancellation by the network. For all those jonesing for some twisted sci-fi you should try Fringe…
Short translated version:
Pretty please?
Let me make a 2 hour wrap up!
It was his show to ruin, and he ruined it pretty well. He fell in love with his villain, and together they took Heroes right off the air.
Interconnectivity? What is he, a friggin’ fiber-optic cable?
Well, Mr. Kring, when you and the writers decided to kill off the best character in seasons 2 and 3, and your best actor on the show then, Kristen Bell’s Elle, you invited a mega-smiting by the Karma Gods. And that’s exactly what you wound up getting. Hire Tim Kring, future show-gatherers at your own creative peril.
Best character? Flag on the play, sir. Daphne all the way.
