Tim Kring just issued a statement addressing NBC’s cancellation of Heroes. The network is still looking to possibly do a Heroes movie for next season and plans to discuss the idea with Kring after the upfront:
I want to first extend my deepest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to the legion of enthusiastic fans who have watched ‘Heroes’ on TV, online, DVR, DVD and mobile over the last four seasons. Every week more than 45 million TV viewers around the world, as well as millions of social and digital media-based fans, have made ‘Heroes’ one of the five most-watched shows across traditional and digital media screens in the history of television. For NBC, I certainly understand the challenge of creating a business model around a show which arrived precisely as the audience was finding new ways to watch traditional content on multiple screens. I personally have had 12 great years with my friends at NBC, and with ‘Heroes,’ they provided me a rare opportunity to put a message of hope, interconnectivity and global consciousness into the world. For that I am grateful and look forward to finalizing our discussion about a number of ways to keep the ‘Heroes’ universe alive for its fans.

My understanding is that he is correct about having millions of global viewers (maybe 45 is an exaggeration, but it is up there). It would be nice if fans were given the option of paying $1 an episode to stream. Heck, even if it were a $2 a month subscription for 4 episodes and only HALF the people kept watching that’s $25 million. I know I’d have paid for Arrested Development. Not sure about Heroes. I loved the first season, but the mystery was gone.
STILL, NETWORKS TAKE NOTE!! It is REALLY annoying to not allow a conclusion to a series… I know I avoided watching “V” at first for fear it would cancel before a satisfying conclusion.
I can agree on that… Cuting off shows in the middle of something is just damn wrong. Check “4400″ and “Dark Angel”. Heck, it really bothered me that simply there was “NO” conclusion.
Only decent thing he’s written in years.
Yet another show that suffered from bad, rushed writing. It’s a pity – because the actors put a lot of effort in to it all. Not to mention all the other members of crew.
Maybe a little less “inter-connectivity” and a bit more “interesting dialogue and action”.
Season 1 was good with a wobbly middle.
Season 2 onwards was a steaming pile and evidence that the season 1 wobbly middle was a symptom of the fact that Kring and his writing staff had absolutely no idea what they were doing.
He should thank God he got a run this long.
Tim, you’re show sucked, if you would have written better, it would have been on still.
This from a guy who doesn’t know how to use you’re correctly in a sentence. Heroes sucked after the first season and even that was mediocre.
“Poor Heroes. I’ve never watched a show that fell so hard, so fast. I gave up on it halfway through Season 3.”
You’re a better viewer than I am, Gunga Din.
I got hooked on Season 1 three episodes in; couldn’t wait for the Season 2 premiere…and knew halfway into that ep. the show had spun off in directions that didn’t make sense and were boring, to boot. Season 1 is a near-perfect mini-series–the rest…ugh.
The ridiculous end to season 1 was a precursor to what Heroes would become over the next four years. I went from “can’t wait to watch Heroes” to “just die already, this is horrible”. Heroes has been the biggest disappointment in this decade. A show that had such promise and potential turned into an incredible mess that had no other purpose than to insult anybody with a brain with their stupid plots that led nowhere. To air a 2-hour series finale a big F-U to anybody who ever watched this show. Kring should just film himself flipping off the camera for 2-hours because that will be what this series finale amounts to, at least that way its more honest and direct.
much of the cast was tired of it as well. hayden wanted out a long time ago.
Perhaps the TV executives should also learn a lesson from this?
I my experience some of the best series ever made only run for 2 or 3 seasons with a strong core storyline.
Me thinks they’re being greedy!
Perhaps if Kring had been commissioned for just the 2/3 seasons more effort could have been made into producing a tighter & more polished, but inventive script.
Mini series, yes please. I ain’t paying to watch a rushed, cram it all in film!
LOL I love all the hating comments! And I so agree!
I still do not know how it is even possible for a show to go from excellent to horrible in just a matter of EPISODES! literally! The season 1 finale was great, and then the season 2 premiere was average and it just went down from there.
Tim Kring is an idiot, and I hardly ever say this, but I think I hate him. He doesn’t deserve another chance in television.
Totally agree… I was defending this right up to the 3rd season and even I had to give up. I think writers from Smallville could have done 1,000X better… and I hate Smallville too.
Heroes has a lot of fans here in the Philippines. It’s so sad to see the ending with the Carnival storyline. It could’ve been better if the story was related to the first two seasons.
You can trace the rapid decline of “Heroes”, when it started down that well worn path of Hollywood Liberalism.
These writers and producers time and time again, take a show that has a good following and decide, to get their leftist cocktail party card punched, alienate half their audience.
Let me guess, you’d vote for Palin, wouldn’t you? Ridiculous a$$ comment… if liberal views is what destroyed Heroes, then just about every single piece of science fiction from Jules Verne to f’n crappy Avatar would be a complete failure. You sir, are an idiot and just obviously outed how much of a non-sci-fi, non-comic-book, non-literary kind of person you are. Its ok, rejoice, they’ll probably have another CSI somewhere. Those are always mind-numbingly entertaining.
I think they are talking about Heroes here and not Avatar which was a superb movie. They made a radical change in the storyline in the 3rd season and I feel they should have killed off Sylar. He was interesting for awhile but Quinto doesn’t have the depth to carry the character long term, especially when they have villain confusion. He was great while really evil, but when they changed that…eh, he was no fun anymore. Prior to that, you never knew what he would be up to next. I still love the show and would like to see closure. Writing a tv show isn’t easy and sometimes their vision isn’t the fan’s vision…so what. It was still a good show.
This is a stupid site. Some idiot can blame liberalism in Heroes as it’s downfall, but when I point out the absolute ridiuculous of that statement, my comment gets deleted.
Anyone who thinks Heroes was too liberal has never read or seen a piece of sci-fi in their life. Whether its Jules Verne, Orson Welles or Avatar.
Stupid jerk spreading some inane political agenda and that’s ok to post. What a stupid site to go with the stupid jerks.
So ALL shows on TV should be focused on the right? What fun would that be?
Maybe people shouldn’t look to far into these shows, not everything has an underlying message or political views.
Well I’m still waiting for a 4400 mini or movie to wrap it up so I won’t get my hopes too high about this
OMG! The 4400 was a way better show! I actually cried when it was announced that it would be canceled. But I agree with you, can’t wait till that happens (if that happens). I watched all four seasons of Heroes, and read every comic. And though I admit that the writing was lead astray, I stayed in there with hope for a brighter rebirth to Heroes. The most I got was a magnificent performances by Christine Rose as Mama Petrelli, who immediately became my favorite character. For all you haters out there, there are still mysteries that they have yet to answer, and still the semblance of intrigue in the show. But I must admit that the show as a whole was not worth my time, but it was the times that were that beckoned me to come, like an addict jonesing for their next fix.
Sounds like everyone is in agreement that the writing was to blame. I was one that hung in there to the end. As the episodes wore on I couldn’t help to comment to my son at bad plot turns, and gaps in logic, but I kept hoping they would get their mojo back. Unfortunately, despite so many new powers in season 2 and 3 no one discovered a gift for writing.
Personally, I feel if NBC decided to pay some writers they could bring this series back to life, like Peter, or Silar, or Nathan, or Nikki…
The funny thing is that many of the plot turns that spoiled the series could have worked. They just needed to be better thought out and written. It seems that Hollywood in general seems to think that special effects can mask a good script. This is a recurring theme that has new life with 3D. Lets hope that 3D doesn’t catch on too quickly with TV.
If anyone from Hollywood actually reads this, please understand this:
syfysci-fi core fans look to be intellectually challenged from stories, we don’t look for stories from the intellectually challenged.I used to defend Heroes to no end… until last season. I’m not sad to see it go… you know how people whine that all these mega-corporations don’t need a bailout? They screwed up and should pay for their mistakes? Well Heroes screwed up, and now they gotta pay by getting cancelled. If there was ever a good concept with a lack of focus or direction, it was this show. Tim Kring needs to get off the coke.
I think if characters had actually stayed dead (Noah should’ve died in Season 2 when he took the bullet in the eye, he didn’t deserve a revival) and certain characters would just hurry up and die (Ando, Mohinder, etc) and Sylar stopped fucking around with being good and just admitted he’s an evil, twisted fuck AND if there had actually been some decent fight scenes I would be heartbroken by this cancellation.
But I’m not, so fuck you very much Tim Kring.
You’re right. You couldn’t depend on anyone actually dying. That alone was emotionally frustrating. At the end of the day, it was the most entertaining show on that night. I’ll miss it.
Somebody said above that they were dissapointed with the lack of fight scenes, and i agree completely, fight scenes are not incredibly difficult to create surely, i mean in comparrison to many of the other special effects they insert, thats why i liked the Terminator franchise, some good story in there, characters relationships are explored, and it even sheads some light on the big questions about AI in the future, and then you can give your mind a rest and watch super powered machines throw one and other through scenery, and although young myself im confident this is something the older generations feel is important for realism, and something to rattle the old bones. Im just sad one of the last things i will remember about Heroes is Sylar knocking claire down with his telekinesis and reading her through some erotic method he stole from a carnie, im just not looking forward to telling my buddy who watches Heroes with me that it has been cancelled :/
HEROES had a promising start. It gave a view to a world where individuals had extraordinary powers and it affected their lives. The first season was really the best.
The problem from there is they worked to hard to keep alive individuals. As people moved through the show and saw one major character after another killed, only to be resurrected in the next season they lost the suspension of disbelief. Nothing seemed real anymore.
Since no one ever really died then nothing was of consequence because it would only be undone in a later episode. As such the show became inconsequential and thus folks stopped watching it.
Had they stuck to Kring’s original thesis that they would have a new crop of HEROES each season, with possible cameos from previous season HEREOS it probably would have enjoyed a much longer run.
I am and will always be a fan of Heroes, despite it’s many errors, because I’ve grown attached to a lot of the characters. I think THAT is where the show lost a lot of it’s appeal. It went from a character-based show to one about saving the world…all the freaking time. What made season one so great was the focus on the lives of the characters that eventually came together to save the world. Each character had their own story to tell while an underlying story brought them together in the end. But then it went all crazy and they had to all save the world together. I think Redemption was trying to get back to those roots, but it failed to keep focus on characters than the overall story. Things got too powerful too fast. The whole government thing was ridiculous, the constant time traveling was annoying, and the whole powers here today, gone tomorrow, and back the next PLUS every wife, brother, aunt, uncle and so forth being able to get powers was too much.
As a Heroes fan, I will defend Heroes all the way in it’s good points (character stories), and agree that there were terrible arts (pretty much everything else after season one), but I have to say that despite the crazy, illogical, and brainless turns it’s made, it was still a damn good show underneath it all. You just had to dig…a lot…and be able to ignore…a whole lot…and have an imagination (to fill in what you ignored with better stuff) to find it.
i have to agree about some of these comments about poor writing, and also, as much as i love Zachary Quinto, Sylar should have died a long time ago IMHO
Killing off Kristen Bell’s Elle was also a mistake
Poor writing, too many revivals and killing off popular character = RIP Heroes
Ok, as someone who watched the entire franchise, killing off Elle was LONG OVERDUE! She wasn’t even the best or most interesting new character of Season 2. That title, my friend, belonged to Monica Dawson. I had envisioned many wonderful scenes with St Joan. But alas, abandon good characters and promote the most annoying ones (I hadn’t liked Peter since Episode 1)
Out of all the super-powers discovered in this series, the one they needed most was a ‘special’ to find that he had the ability to write a decent script.
Was a huge fan since Season 1….I admit at times I found myself yelling at the TV but what can you do. It would be nice to have a wrap up mini series for all us fans…we may be few but if they can close out Lost they can do the same for Heroes
I loved season one. Every episode left me wondering what would happen next.
I felt like season two could have been a lot better. They actually had an alternate ending planned for season two, but because of the writer’s strike, they had to change it and it all went downhill from there.
Season three had some cool ideas, but they were poorly developed and episodes like ‘Coyote Sands’ contradicted old story lines (like Mohinder’s father working with heroes in the 60′s when he apparently knew nothing about them in season one).
Season four was a nightmare. I watched every week hoping it would get better, but the new villain Samuel seemed uninspired, Sylar was too whiny, Peter was boring without his power-absorbing power and don’t get me started on that deaf girl with the cello…
Overall I’m sad that this series fell apart, but I can’t say that I’m at all surprised.
My brain just assumed that after Coyote Sands one of the specials wiped Chandra Suresh’s mind but being the super scientist he was he ended up back on the same path.
Dunno whether that was the intention but it covered the plot hole nicely.
As for the show I thought season 1 was awesome, season 2 could’ve been if it wasn’t for the strike then season 3 and 4 kept improving.
Monica should’ve stayed, rainbrow brite cello girl didn’t need to exist, Sylar should’ve died to let Samuel be a proper villan.
Suresh didn’t need powers, he needed to die, Hiro should’ve kept weakening until he could only stop time then die from his brain thing after using time travel again to save someone.
I really hope they can pull a nice mini-series to finish it off, something that goes from Claire outing the specials to evil future with president Sylar/Nathan, scar Peter, everything screwed and possibly ending with Sylar becoming an exploding man after someone removed his healing power.
Heroes really had a good start, I agree. Season 2? Not bad, but I still think it could be better if the writer’s strike didn’t happen! You know, Heroes was really a great show and I think season 5 would be what we all wanted from it.
RIP Heroes
I’ll just say that I can’t believe Peter never got his powers back! He and Sylar never actually fought when they were at full power, except that lame scene when Peter had the hunger and Sylar was good.
How come Peter never got the scar? Why keep showing that, and all these dark futures, if the worst that happens is the carnival comes to town and Sylar suddenly goes good after 30 minutes in a mind trap.
BRUTAL!
At full power Sylar and Peter were virtually invulnerable so a proper fight would either be endless and pointless, end with one dead (unlikely!)or one unconscious (as happened)
