SUNDAY AM UPDATE: Iron Man 2 didn’t break the big Hollywood
record for opening day or one-day or even 3-day weekend. “Hey, it’s Iron Man, not Platinum Man,” one rival studio exec quipped in an email to me. But it did launch with an “A” Cinemascore and $133.6 million, placing at least the 5th and maybe even 4th all-time best grossing weekend. That beats Shrek 3′s $121.6M and possibly Pirates Of The Caribbean 3′s $135.6M. But not Twilight Saga 2: New Moon’s $142.8M, or Spider-Man 3‘s $151.1M, or The Dark Knight’s $158.4M.
This is the first Marvel film to be released since it was acquired by Disney. Distributor Paramount debuted IM2 in 4,380 North American theaters to $46.5M Saturday and $52.4M Friday, including $7.5 million in Thursday midnight shows at just under 3,000 locations. IM2 easily beat the original’s launch of $38.7M/$102.1M from 4,105 locations. But the sequel had reeled in the widest release in Hollywood history. IMAX logged a 3-day domestic total of $10.2M, or 8% of the film’s overall box office for an IMAX 2D opening weekend domestic record, passing Star Trek‘s $8.5M a year ago. (It also outgrossed 3D Avatar’s snow-impacted opening weekend of $9.5M.)
Kicking off the official summer movie season, IM2 already has earned $194M overseas from almost 60 territories where it opened before the U.S. and Canada, so that’s a $327M worldwide cume. Top grossing countries were Britain and Korea with $23M each. Here’s the Top 10:

Friday $52.4M, Saturday $46.5M, Weekend $133.6M, Cume $327M

WEDNESDAY 5:30 PM: Here’s one for the record books. When it arrives in theaters tonight at midnight, Iron Man 2 will have the widest initial release in Hollywood history with Paramount launching the Marvel comic book caper in 4,380 locations. The previous widest opening had been Warner Bros’ The Dark Knight with 4,366 venues. The latest predictions have the Jon Favreau-directed, Robert Downey Jr-starrer poised to make between $155 million to $160 million this 3-day opening weekend, possibly beating TDK‘s $158.4 million.

I’d go for about 150. Midnight shows aren’t even sold out yet in most theaters in NYC, including IMAX. A month prior to TDK’s opening you couldn’t find a ticket anywhere, including 3am showings.
ROBERT DOWNEY JR, JON FAVREAU AND KEVIN FEIGE POPPED INTO THE ARCLIGHT THEATER LAST NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD!!! They got a standing ovation, audience went nuts. The Arclight employee started doing his thing by getting everyones attention to do his presentation b4 the movie and was interrupted by Robert Downey yelling, “lets hear for the director,” and we all thought it was some douchebag but then the two walked out and it was CHAOS!!! Iron Man 2 is better than the first…i LOVED IT!
awesome! I’d love to have been there.
Well, it’s not surprising that Iron Man 2 isn’t breaking all sorts of records.
The Financial Depression of 2010 (all Barack Obama’s fault, BTW) is forcing families to tighten their belts.
The Dork Knight didn’t have to contend with such a miserable economy.
very true, This is yet another example of how Obama is huerting businesses and I feel sorry such a great movie like Iron Man 2 lacks the profit it deserves.
Youre a fucking idiot
Strange, I thought AVATAR, the biggest money making movie of all time, was done during the Obama administration….
Avatar was started during the Bush administration — not that it matters; James Cameron is Canadian.
It’s all Bush’s fault you dumbass stop listening to Rush Limbaugh.
Um, these same families should have been tightening their belts pre-Obama, as well. This “financial depression” you called it -DIDN’T JUST HAPPEN LAST YEAR- and, how about keeping it to the IRON MAN 2 FACTS [and not your highly subjective ideas].
IM2 won’t open bigger than DARK KNIGHT simply because the BUZZ on DK was GLOBAL…. and several factors went into that; Ledger’s passing and early critical praise from nearly 100% of the critics who seen DK helped to stimulate the world’s interest that year in DARK KNIGHT….
This is not the forum for politics but how in the world is the economy Obama’s fault. He inherited it from 8 years of bush and BTW why does every movie have to break some record. 135 is still a lot of money for 3 days
What a loser
I was afraid that you guys would find this site . If it were not for that conan strife they would not be here. They feed off of chaos.
Great I come to this site to read about movies and I get political nonsense
If it was in 3D it could have gain a number between $170 million and more..
Sadly, you’re probably right.
(In reference to the 3D comment)
Not all movies should be in 3D. Look for Roger Ebert’s report on why 3D is totally wrong for most movies. I’m glad it’s not in 3D & wouldn’t want to watch it in 3D.
Although I agree that not all movies need or should be in 3d I find it laughable to say that u wouldn’t see it in 3d if given the choice.
I wouldn’t. And don’t unless it was shot in 3D like Avatar and Dragons. So laugh away.
I wouldn’t. I would never see a 3D conversion. I saw Alice and Titans in 2D. I saw Dragon, Christmas Carol, Avatar, etc. in 3D. I’m not interested in a cardboard cutout look – let alone paying extra for it.
I wouldn’t either. The glasses make the screen distractingly dark. Unless it’s planned from Day 1 like Avatar and done right, 3D adds nothing to the experience and takes away light.
Yes,I agree!3D is not conception of making the movie.
The comment was just meant to say that if it had been, it would have well destroyed The Dark Knight’s record. . . not that it should have been.
Thank the lord it wasn’t in 3D. I’ve just about had enough of those glasses. Film-makers don’t need 3D. Only anti-piracy campaigners need 3D.
I’m saying 165. You heard it here.
Re: Box office grosses;
So many people who create cinematic works of art will never get a second chance at their craft & passion if this is what John & Mary ticket buyer base their decision on.
Andy was right again i guess…nothing new; “the best art of all is the art of making money”
saw it in HK..
Not as good as the 1st one..too many stuffs happening in the movie and kind of loses it charm unlike the 1st one
So don’t think it will beat DK2 record…will be close..but Batman can sleep well
Until The Avengers that is
Agreed, not as good as one. I say B-, my wife gives it a C.
Music really sucked, why dump the theme from the first film?
Hated watching and listening to Sam Rockwell”s character, I actively disliked the film when he was on screen.
Yeah, Justin Hammer was a crowd fave in the screening I saw.
Please wake me when comic book season is over.
Not gonna happen so soon Digger. What with the many reboots, remakes and re-imagining of old franchises and movies, (que Spidey, Pirates..etc) you can be assured of comic season is going to last for a very long time.
Until ‘Underwear Man is made, lets just join the party…
Enjoy a long, peaceful slumber. Including Iron Man 2, Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to play Nick Fury in nine movies. That means we’ll get at least a Thor movie, another attempt at Captain America, and an Avengers movie. They CAN make less than nine…if the idea flops, but it probably won’t.
This year a major comic movie will flop signaling the end of this accursed genre.
It peaked with Dark Knight and now it’s all downhill.
3D is a gimmick and will soon wear out its welcome
saw the movie last night (someone I know works at a theater and i got to watch it with the employees)
enjoyed it and hope it makes some cash
Disagree. Saw Alice in 3D and won’t ever pay extra to see another movie in 3D again. Found the who experience of having to were those god-awful glasses far to distracting and every bit as annoying as remember as a kid.
You were stupid to see ALICE in 3D in the first place. That movie is the example that SHOULD NOT be in 3D. Not to mention they went cheap and post converted it in 3D. Avatar and How to Train Your Dragon are fantastic examples of 3D done the right way.
Well, I would fault you automatically for seeing Alice in Wonderland. I knew the 3D would suck when I read it was a converted slap-job. Avatar was awesome in 3D though, hence, its 750 million dollar gross.
Oh, they actually plan on opening it in the US? I’ve forgotten about this movie already. I don’t like sloppy seconds.
peggy you seem a little bitter over the fact that someone who wasnt a fat arrogant american got to see a movie before you, how dare they!
And as for sloppy seconds then you must not like any movie you’ve seen because i can guarantee that someone else has already seen it before you.
Or prehaps you just like being unpleasant
Or maybe Peggy is a Sean Avery fan.
Man, take the stick out of your butt Kira.
It’s a joke. You’re on a message board for movie grosses.
Right… it’s PEGGY who’s being bitter, not you kira. LOL.
TOLDJA!
Since the movie isn’t as good as the first one opening it in the US last takes the specialness out of it. If you want to give us sloppy seconds, they better be GREAT sloppy seconds.
I feel like the only person on earth not at a midnight screening for this tonight.
Robert Downey Jr. is the coolest person on the planet. Can’t wait to see this and Due Date.
Only someone that misspells “pudding” in their name would think that an overpaid, overrated megadouche Hollywood actor is the coolest person on the planet.
Only someone who foolishly thinks mega douche is one word and not two would post something of epic fail caliber like you did.
Alex, you are a gentleman and a scholar.
Only someone who actually feels the need to point out that “megadouche” cannot be found in dictionaries, and uses this as an example of the previous comment’s failure, would…oh, forget it.
It’s like an extravaganza of metal on metal action. Similar to the comic books most definitely. But whether that will drive it past The Dark Knight, I’m not so sure.
However, I know better than to underestimate the power of fan boys and fan girls.
“It’s like an extravaganza of metal on metal action.”
Therein lies the problem with the Iron Man movie franchise. It suffers from a shortage of good villains.
In the first movie, Iron Man fights a larger version of himself. In the sequel, he fights multiple versions of himself. So…in the third he will fight even more, even bigger versions of himself?
If not for Robert Downey Jr’s great performance as Tony Stark, this movie would feel like little more than a mech-battle movie.
I friggin’ love that you’re still awake, Nikki.
Sold-out midnight crowd was rocking and rolling to IM:2 at Seattle’s big-screen Cinerama theater, Nikki.
The crowd seemed to really dig it and people applauded at the end, which caught me off guard. I’m not sure if they were clapping for the movie OR for the end tease clip after the final credits roll (I won’t spoil it for you folks in case you’re about to see the movie!)
What also surprised me most was this: the crowd totally went nuts for the A-Team trailer but was a bit tepid after the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” — uh oh.
Reception seemed much more enthusiastic for the trailer of M. Night Shyamalan “The Last Airbender”
Will be interesting to see if the Seattle audience reaction to any of these clips is a harbinger of things to come!
That tepidness your referring to is pure shock. Ive been anticipating INCEPTION for a year now and when i saw the trailer i was just blown away. I think most audiences were too as well. Hollywood has been pumping out so much crap the last few years the average movie goer forgot what an EPIC and legitimately good movie actually looks like. I wouldnt pay much attention to that my friend. The blogs are on fire right now over that trailer and come july so will the theaters.
WOW this is terrible news for Iron Man 2. I thought this movie would easily make about 160 to 170 million dollars in its first weekend. Now there is little chance that this beats The Dark Knight’s record for biggest opening weekend.
Yes, such terrible news. How will they cope?
Why is this terrible news? You make it sound like it needed to break DK’s record to be a success. It’s still going to finish around $300 million for it’s run. It’s still the 800-pound gorilla of what looks to be an incredibly weak summer.
800 pound gorilla..What are freeking nuts? Its more like an 800 pound donkey kong terd. IM2 sucked balls. Incredibly weak summer…i think not. I will tell you like i told some other idiot on here saying something similar. There lives a beast out there that go by the name of INCEPTION that come july will be taking an 800 pound dump all over IM2. EPIC cast, EPIC music, EPIC trailer, EPIC action, EPIC director(Christopher Nolan), EPIC cinematography, EPIC plot.,dream thieves. Freelance dream thieves who construct, invade, retrieve in the subcontious mind for corporate gain. Who doesnt dream? I think everyone on the planet dreams. Would’nt you say? I think its safe to say that will a little bit more of an impact on movie goers than Iron man doing his best version of a disc jockey at his birthday party and demonstrating for his guest how one urinates in an IRONMAN suit….god how embarassing. Wake up man summer movies havn’t even begun.
With a 200 millon budgit the movie needs to make 400 millon just to break even b/c the theater keeps half the money,so when you judge how much a movie makes don’t forget the budgit.
Just came back from seeing Iron Man 2 on IMAX. I was a little disappointed. It has its moments. Some actions scenes are amazing and Robert Downey Jr. is once again great. The first Iron Man is clearly the best of the two.
I have to say I loved the “post credit segment”! I won’t say what it is because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.
By the way, the IMAX theater I went to was only about 2/3 full. Yes, it was the early show (10AM), but still, I expected it to be sold out. In fact, not a single show has been sold out on this IMAX screen for the entire day!
I know, it’s sure to sell out as the day goes on, but still a little surprising for such an event film!
10:00 PM shows are not even sold out on the west coast and I am writing this at 9:10 PM. I have the pick of many theaters. This movie isn’t going to get close to The Dark Knight (158.4). It may not even break Twilight 2 (140+).
Maybe it won’t set a record, but I’ll bet it’s nowhere near as bleak and nihilistic as The Dark Knight. I feel like I can take my tween kids to an Iron Man movie without scarring them for life.
Thanks Favs and RDJ for not taking grown men in costumes fighting other men in costumes so g.d. seriously.
Tonight’s #’s could be lowered even more (probably), 38 degrees in the midwest kept a lot of people home, snow flurries up north.
This is supposed to be a summer opener!
Great movie though, I can’t say enough how much I like Downey in this role!
Loved it. Arclight tonight at 10:30 was sold out as was the 10:31 showing.
Just saw it. I know it isn’t popular to like a comic book sequel but this was worth my 12.50. Smart, charming, loud, sexy…I mean with Scarlett J’s amazing fight scenes, Sam Rockwell being an awesome smart ass, and Mickey f-ing Rourke everyone can find a reason to smile. Only Downey Jr. can still shine next to that group. It won’t beat DK but it’ll make money..and no, I don’t work for Pmount.
12.50 i only paid 8.50 , i would have paid more it would have been worth it. keep it hush hush dont want them getting ideas. lol
Why does every movie have to break a record now to be successful/worthy of attention? Movie grosses are not a competition. You see a film based on its merits, based on the kind of film you like to see. Who gives a crap if it beats The Dark Knight? It’s obviously going to make a boatload of money. They are two completely different films, one with a lighter tone and lots of humor, the other a dark, violent crime epic. They’re not even worth comparing.
Amen.
I agree! It’s kind of a drag, isn’t it? Movie goers experience should count more than comparisons when watching a film. My experience watching IM2 was great. It’s simply a fun film to watch. Oh an Robert looks really good in this movie. I was a little upset when Terrance got the ax, but have to admit Don fit in perfectly.
Agreed that the midnight shows didn’t do as hot as The Dark Knight. Only one theater in the area sold out a 12:01 and a 12:10 show before midnight. TDK was sold out across the board for the entire weekend the week before it opened.
As for the 3D comments, I’m FINALLY GLAD people are noticing the difference between films that are MADE in 3D (with 2 cameras, like Avatar and Dragon) and those that are RENDERED in 3D in post-production (Alice, Clash of the Titans…) I just hope they start advertising “Actually Filmed in 3D” to distinguish the movies I should spend the extra money on.
Oh yeah, and when I saw Chicken Little in 3D a few years ago, the tickets were the SAME PRICE for 3D as 2D…
I loved the back up plan. It is a great time at the movies.
Good the back up plan is holding so well. The movie deserves it
Stop it, JLo.
ROFL!!
