HBO is teaming with James Gandolfini to develop an U.S. version
of the hit French Canadian single-camera comedy series Taxi-22 as a potential starring vehicle for the Sopranos star. The project, to be written by comedy veteran Dave Flebotte, (Desperate Housewives) centers on a politically incorrect cab driver in New York City struggling to keep his life together. It is being developed at Gandolfini’s Attaboy Films production company, which has a deal with HBO. Gandolfini is executive producing with Flebotte, Gandolfini’s managers Nancy Sanders and Mark Armstrong, Dennis Erdman, Clark Peterson and the creators of the original series Patrick Huard and Francois Flamand. Robert Horn is a consultant. Huard, a top Canadian comedian, also stars on the Canadian series, now in its fourth season. Erdman and Peterson licensed the format rights from Huard and Flamand and brought the project to HBO and Gandolfini.
Gandolfini has been under a deal at HBO since 2006 and has flirted with a number of series projects, including one that would’ve had him portray a Roger Ailes-type character at a cable news channel, but is yet to commit to star in its follow-up series to The Sopranos. Another potential candidate is a show set in the Arctic, which is in very preliminary stages. On the film side, Attaboy has been developing with HBO Hemingway, a feature about the tempestuous romance between Ernest Hemingway and war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, as a starring vehicle for Gandolfini. Gandolfini also executive produced the HBO documentary Alive Day Memories: Home From Iraq.

Go make a sopranos movie james…no ones interested in seeing you in anything else
We need more comedys….Our world nees to laugh together to lighten up our stress. I would love to be part of the project with James.
Blessings,
Leslie Berger
You are so wrong but I think you know that. Most people will be incredibly happy to see James again. I know I can’t wait! This is such good news!
Terrific! With Gandolfini on board – a powerhouse actor of his generation – at HBO where they do it better than Hollywood, I can’t wait to tune in. Please keep us updated.
“a politically incorrect cab driver in New York City struggling to keep his life together”
*yawn*
No “New York cop”, “New York lawyer” or “New Yorker looking for love” scripts around?
I’m sure there is a “New York doctor” script being shopped around.
If you haven’t witnessed his voice work in “Where the Wild Things Are,” I don’t think you know quite what this guy’s capable of. I was so surprised by what he brought to the part of Carol that I’ll kind of just go with this guy in any role.
The official title of the Quebecois Canadian TV series is “Taxi 0-22″…
I’d love to see James Gandolfini in a really great new role. Preferably on HBO where he can do some great work.
He’s such a great actor that although he had an iconic role, I don’t think he is typecast as Tony Soprano. Kind of like Michael C. Hall . . . he walked right into the Dexter role and was even better than his character on SFU.
P.S. A Roger Ailes-like character would be a really interesting one to examine.
With Treme, True Blood and Boardwalk Empire and now this, HBO is back.
Don’t forget In Treatment, Season 3. Debra Winger will be a patient. (I hope Paul doesn’t fall for her; that would be too predictable.)
I know Taxi 0-22 (the original show) and what the character would need is a stand-up comedian able to show a vast range of emotions and younger than Gandolfini.
Gandolfini is a genuinely and intuitively funny actor, as witnessed in many of his better-written roles (he was terrific in “God of Carnage” on Broadway as well). If you give him decent material that allows him a full range of emotions he’ll deliver 100%. Man I’m happy to hear he’s getting something solid together for HBO again!
my dream is a film with surviving cast Oz and The Sopranos.
Flebotte is a gifted writer who wrote a great SOPRANOS episode from the season with Joey Pants. Taxi 0-22 is a very cool vehicle for Gandolfini.
I like Gandolfini but I don’t think this is the ride he should take to make a comeback.
Flebotte is an incredibly talented writer. Gandolfini is an incredibly talented actor. Would love to see what they come up with.
For the record… Flebotte is a great guy. Solid writer… funny bastard… all around great guy. Really happy for him…
This seems like a great choice for Gandolfini. I would love to see him in this role and I think he could knock it out of the park. After The Sopranos, he should lighten it up a bit.
Terrific. “All in the Family” in a cab.
Yup. I love all the drama and comedy in TaxiCab Confessions, and even Cash Cab. So I’d love to spend time with a politically incorrect James in a NYC taxi. He’s a terrific actor. The Hemingway story sounds like a good choice, too.
This seems like a perfect role for Mr. Gandolfini. I would love to see him as a “politically incorrect” cab driver. Seems like it is something he could do very believably, and could probably be funny and very emotional at the same time. Go HBO!
The cab driver in the original series is a vocal racist and misogynist, is anti-corporate, rude, brash, negative and more. I fear the American “politically incorrect” version will be a yawn-inducing watered-down affair.
Flebotte is a talented writer. It always good to have some more comedies
