Jimmy Fallon has been named host of the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards,
which will air live on NBC on August 29. He succeeds his predecessor on NBC’s Late Night, Conan O’Brien, who hosted the awards show the last two times it aired on NBC, in 2002 and 2006. A high-profile gig like hosting the Emmys will raise the visibility of Fallon, who recently marked a year since taking over Late Night. Also, he is considered young and hip and can sing and dance, qualities the TV Academy has been looking for in a host since the hurrahs for Neil Patrick Harris last year. Here is more from the press release:
“Jimmy was the natural choice as one of the most promising and likable young entertainers who will now have the chance to display his many talents on television’s biggest night,” NBC’s EVP alternative programming Paul Telegdy said. “His proven skills as a comedian and host – as well as his openness to new ideas — will fully engage audiences and ultimately deliver a lively Emmy telecast.”
“Jimmy Fallon provided one of the most memorable and talked about moments from last year’s Emmy telecast,” TV Academy chairman John Shaffner said. “He is a bright, insightful and energetic entertainer who made his name performing on live television.”
“Jimmy has many talents. He can sing, he can dance, he does impersonations, and he does it gracefully and with ease,” said executive producer Don Mischer. “I think he’ll make a terrific host .”
“Hosting the Emmys has been a dream of mine ever since they told me I was doing it,” said Jimmy Fallon, a two-time host of the MTV Movie Awards and also hosted the MTV Video Music Awards.
Nominations for the Emmy Awards will be announced Thursday, July 8.

Thats very funny Jimmy. Knock em dead!
Nbc statement was aimed straight at conan. Love it
I like Jimmy as a personality but his stand up delivery is atrocious. He has no timing whatsoever.
This is a great reward for Jimmy as his show’s been getting better and better. Sarah Silverman last night was particularly hilarious:

Thank the lord it’s FALLON and not KIMMEL. Break a leg, only funny Jimmy in late night!
Good for him. The whole Leno/O’Brien pie fight (anybody else sick of them both?) detracts from the fact that Fallon puts on a funny, often innovative late night show. Best band on TV, too. Hope the Emmys give his show a boost.
Oh, dear. Sorry to pee in the pool. I’ve long felt that his only saving grace is having the good sense to appear to be every bit as uncomfortable appearing on the stage as I feel watching him on stage.
Well, I’ll not bellow and mewl, nor effort to change the minds of others. But I’ll certainly not watch. I just can’t feel that cruel for that long of a stretch.
Good for him, he seems like a nice guy.
Oh Jesus, guess I’ll be staying away from the Emmy awards this year. Fallon was unfunny when he was on SNL, and he’s unfunny taking over for Conan on Late Night. Can’t wait to see what happens when NBC tries to replace Jay Leno with Fallon when he retires…lol. Any you know they will…
Mark my words: “Lowest rated Emmys ever!”
He may have a great band, great guests, even great writers — but I don’t know why all that amounts to him being worth much of anything. He rode Tina Fey’s coattails on SNL and did “okay” there — at least tolerable for ten minutes or so a week. For being able to deliver funny material with a straight face more than half the time.
He’s lost more ratings for his show than the Tonight Show dropped under Conan (and Conan actually greatly improved on his Late Night audience numbers when he took over the TS). This guy sure gets awarded credit for what a lot of OTHER people actually do.
He just exudes “uncomfortableness” and is hard to watch, and even hard to look at — like if a precooked meatball and a balled-up fist mated somehow.
Hope they have some good writers because Jimmy isn’t good off the cuff. I like the guy and his show is fine but hosting a major awards show is just over his head I’m afaid.
The networks need to stop using the show to advertise their shows and network. That’s why I hated when FOX use to show their stars who happened to show up for a World Series game.
More proof we are a culture in decline. Did anyone else see “Taxi”? No? Didn’t think so.
Wow! What a line: “Hosting the Emmys has been a dream of mine ever since they told me I was doing it.” What great, dry wit from a guy who will probably look into the camera and laugh at his own lame jokes. Fallon sucks as a host, his show is garbage, and the Emmys made a huge mistake.
Proving once again that whatever the photos he has are, they’re sufficient to blackmail everyone in Hollywood to get whatever he wants.
I don’t find him funny. Maybe if he wasn’t so awkward..
GREAT idea, they are going to go even more over than they usually do, since he will waste at least 30 minutes laughing awkwardly before, after, and during his jokes.
The opening number is just going to be him standing there chuckling to himself…
this could be ugly..for a comic and a live show veteran he always seem a bit scatter brained when he performs
Fallon has done some great stand-up in LA comedy clubs. His wit is very dry and he does a fine job of engaging the audience. Hope he can bring that to the Emmys.
I am an ardent fan of Jimmy Fallon for his enthusiasm. He’s the primary reason I’m looking forward to the Emmys.
its looking so funny
