JJ Abrams is ready to dish some details on his next Paramount Pictures film, Super 8, with a teaser trailer that will play in front of Iron Man 2 this weekend. That trailer will answer some questions about Super 8, which has been the subject of a lot of internet speculation lately. Today, Paramount officially announced it will start production this fall, and hit theaters next summer. Abrams wrote the script and will direct and produce under his and Bryan Burk’s Bad Robot label, as well as Steven Spielberg’s Amblin banner.
I’m told the trailer begins with a pickup truck that veers onto a train track, heading directly for a locomotive. The legend appears: “In 1979, the US Air Force closed a section of Area 51. All the materials were to be transported to a secure facility in Ohio.” The truck hits the train, there is a tremendous explosion destroying the vehicle and the train. The camera focuses on one train car that wasn’t destroyed. A heavy pounding is heard from inside.
The film is a personal passion project for Abrams, an homage to the films he loved as a teen. It will be shot for $45 million which puts Super 8 in league with the Bad Robot-produced Cloverfield. But it is not a sequel to that film as has been speculated. Abrams will shoot this in traditional style, not hand-held. He’ll then go to work on the Star Trek sequel, which is dated for a Summer 2012 release.

JJ definitely knows his marketing.. though it’s weird (or genius) to have a teaser before the film started filming..
This trailer looks incredible! In 2008, Cloverfield was the movie I could not wait to see on screen. I now know that next year’s will be Super 8 for me. JJ Abrams is on such a hot streak right now, I don’t know how his fans couldn’t be excited. Aliens, Steven Spielberg, and JJ Abrams all rolled into one equal major summer blockbuster. The buzz that will build around this movie is going to be MASSIVE. I can’t wait. The leaked trailer is here: http://thesmogger.com/2010/05/07/super-excited-for-super-8/
Yes, J.J. is a genius, brilliant, everything he does is just great and fantastic. He pees gasoline and craps gold. He can do no wrong. He even has the power to put black people in primetime, something no black person can even do. Now he can promote a film before he even makes it. I know what’s in that train car, J.J.’s otherworldly talent!
You know why JJ’s so popular? Because he’s talented. But do you know why JJ’s so successful? It’s because he’s NICE. He’s a good guy in a sea of profoundly self-indulgent jerks. People like working with him, not only because he’s innately talented, but because he’s easy to be around. Michael Bay? Ridley Scott? Not so much.
but they’re pretty successful too… what’s your point
You are so right! Not only is J.J. nice, he’s the nicest man in Hollywood. His niceness is nicer than any niceness that anyone else has.
And talented? WHOO! Man how many people could write a deep show like Felicity?
Or do a show like “Alias” which was a lot like another show called La Femme Nikita?
Or takeover “Lost” and hire Damon Lindenhof to actually do the work?
Or direct that great flick “MI3?”
Or produce some other guy’s movie like “Cloverfield?”
Or remake a classic series like “Star Trek” which has only spawned five TV series and two movie franchises?
You don’t have to tell me how great he is.
I know it.
You’re quite bitter aren’t you?
JJ’s a genuinely nice guy and will hopefully jump from one success to another greater success. That is what I wish for him.
And what I wish for you is that you get a friggin’ life.
BTW J.J. walks on water!
I am so tired of hearing Damon bitch & moan all around town about how he does all the work on “Lost” and J.J. gets all the credit. If you can do it yourself go somewhere and do it yourself, Damon. Go solo. Dazzle us. If you can’t, stop whining about J.J. profiting off your efforts when everyone knows the opposite is closer to the truth. The guy made you a millionaire. Show some f#@cking respect.
So true.
Lindenhof hitched a ride on a rocket. Without JJ it would be Lindenwho?
hey anon you forgot the best sci-fi show on tv right now FRINGE thats from him too in collaboration with other geniuses Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
“He’s a good guy in a sea of profoundly self-indulgent jerks.”
Both true statements: 1) he is a “good guy,” in 2) a “sea of profoundly self-indulgent jerks.”
What you failed to mention is that he hired that each jerk comprising that sea which surrounds him… and there you have Bad Robot Inc.
Don’t condemn Bad Robot as a whole. It’s a great company with a couple of bad apples. Sherryl Clark being one of them obviously whose ugliness comes from the fact that she doesn’t particularly like the world of JJ. It’s like being in a cult, she says. Hey Sherryl, I’d drink that Kool-Aid any day.
I think JJ is the best in the biz right now but I seriously doubt he is the only one who can put black people in prime time, come on get real, we have a black president for crying out loud ,dont give JJ to much credit and by the way Cloverfield wasnt that good, Ive seen better.
Steven Speilberg and JJ Abrams secretly related? Look at the photo.
Cloverfield wasn’t “that fantastic” I also think it’s not fair to use J.J. in the same sentence as Ridley Scott.
Oh knock on Ridley and Bay? At least those guys make huge movies that puts people butts in the seats. It’s not always a “nice job” to control a moving circus. You people out here have no idea what it is like on sets.
Then how is it people like Steven Spielberg, James L. Brooks, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood and George Lucas (to name just a few) have managed to “put peoples butts in seats” for decades now without also sacrificing their humanity?
Man, what jaded comments you all are throwing down! Get the quill outta your butts and siddown!
I knew J.J. back in high school and quite a few of the people at his company someone’s calling jerks…
J.J. is and has always been a true talent and a mensch (Yiddish for gentleman). That is why he is where he is.
I went through film school with Bryan, the guy he hired to run his company, and let me tell you, he is one cool cucumber and is as straight a shooter as there is in a warbled, bent-up town.
And I have only been received graciously by their support staff and those that maintain their edit-bay facilities and whatnot–
So stop the hating and get to creating!!
Maybe something akin to their success will happen to YOU.
@Kevin A: Well said…JJ rocks…all you haters get over yourselves and appreciate talent when you see it.
You guys are so right! This town is full of jerks, assholes, liars, douchebags and stupid lazy trust-funders. And J.J. has managed to get to the top of this game and not become like any of them. He got there through niceness, hard work with no familiar connections, racism, nepotism or cronyism.
He is unlike any man ever to be in this business. He would never lie, sell out a friend, manipulate a situation of grab credit from hard-working people in service of his ego. In fact, he has no ego.
I know for a fact that he once fed the Paramount cafeteria with two fish and a few loaves of bread. So all of you hater just stop it. J.J. Rocks and you suck. Go out, be born again, choose better parents ans friends and maybe you can have half of his great and well-deserved success.
Thank you “The Point,” these people have no idea what the set is like. Yet they continue to judge directors as if they worked with them. I’ve worked as an A.D. under Scott on three films. There is nobody I’d rather go to war with.
It’s very simple, work hard and don’t complain. You’ll find there’s many nice people in Hollywood.
But yea, JJ is a very cool cucumber.
Damon Lindelof is LOST. The last time JJ Abrams worked on the show was the pilot. To say differently is to have no knowledge of the situation.
That may be true, but I agree with the OP, Damon should talk to JJ about it, man to man, and not bitch to EVERYONE ELSE like it’s JJ’s fault his star shines brighter.
“He even has the power to put black people in primetime, something no black person can even do. ” WTF??? what the hell do idiots “Anon” throw race in everything, you dumb ass, this has nothing to do with race…i am black and wish i could slap the dog shit out of you for that comment… and film it and have JJ do a movie about it…but back to the topic, JJ is brilliant, and I love his work.
