When Alice in Wonderland this week became only the sixth film to cross the $1 billion gross mark, it certainly bolstered Johnny Depp’s case for being the biggest movie star in the world. He’s the only guy who has reached the $1 billion mark with two films. The other, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, is the fourth highest grossing film ever. While Will Smith usually leads the world’s biggest star discussion, he has yet to reach the $1 billion mark. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt haven’t hit it either. Leonardo DiCaprio hit it once with Titanic, but you could say the boat was the star in that enterprise. Same with Orlando Bloom, who finds himself on the list twice with Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Pirates, but it would be hard to argue he’s the reason. In fact, most of the billion dollar films are not star-driven spectacles, but Depp’s two entries certainly were. James Cameron is the only director to hit the billion dollar mark twice. He did it with Avatar and Titanic, the top grossing films of all time.

amazing.
Not really… come on, both movies were theme park rides. Will Smith is the only real box office guarantee the world has. Case and Point is Seven Pounds. No one else could have starred in that movie and have it gross over 140million world wide. That is the measure of a true star.
What about Orlando Bloom? (LOTR and Pirates)
Quiet Orlando!
Not surprised… atta’ boy, Johnny.
The guy takes risks and still makes the big 2-B. This should be a lesson.
Everyone always forgets about Bernard Hill, who has also been in two billion dollar films…he played King Theoden in Return of the King and Captain Smith in Titanic.
Orlando was not the star of either film. In LOTR he had a small role and in POTC, he contributed very little to it’s huge success.
Neither Sweeney Todd or Public Enemies made more than $100 million in the US.
People go for big scale Pirate sequels and to see wacky 3D versions of a story that has been told for over a hundred years. Not really for Depp, but he is a draw.
I disagree. Neither of these properties would have done half as well without Depp.
That’s not really true. If you adjust for inflation, which you should, Harrison Ford has done it with all his Star Wars films and the first 2 Indiana Jones movies at least.
Ford’s done it all right. But you’re talking separate films here. None of them reached a billion dollars. Besides, you’re adjusting Ford’s 4 films, to Johnny’s 2 films. If you add the rest of Depp’s, that’s much much more bucks I tell ya.
Depp is hardly the star of Alice.
not sure you call the ‘boat’ the star in Titanic. ‘Leo fever’ was a phenom at the time.
Relax Leo, I’ll give you and whatshername credit too.
Yeah, that is the dumbest statement I’ve read in a while. Everyone knew at the time that the success of Titanic was way more about Leo then it was about the boat. He was the Justin Bieber of 1998.
Nary a comment about how “Alice’s” b.o. figures were inflated by the 3D ticket prices? Really?
It was inevitable that ticket prices would reach 15-18 dollars. Will you detract from films in the future that reach the 1B mark based on inflation? By that logic you could detract from Titanic or any other film of the last 20 years. But thanks anyway for the wink!
And to think it all began with Nightmare on Elm Street.
he’s the man.
what about Helena Bonham Carter? She has three mmovies in the top ten not counting everyone in the harry potter movies who have three also, plus Alan Rickman who has four.
These are all great actors -each performed flawlessly in many films.
However, I thought Alice’s success was co-driven. I haven’t seen Alice yet (so I’m only relying what has caused me to really want to see it) but didn’t think it was driven by Depp. I thought the promotional ads looked great and was/am more excited to see Tim Burton’s hand in creating Alice. I agree Depp played a big role and is a big draw, but unsure whether the films success was driven by him.
That said, Alice was not the last billion-dollar Depp movie. He’ll no doubt have more and always deserves a big piece of the credit for the movie’s success.
And that’s why Tracey’s running the talent department.
It wasn’t the quality of the film or word of mouth that made ‘Alice’ a success, either. And despite the fact that Depp turned in a makeup rather than a performance, he deserves a lot of credit for the success. There aren’t a lot of true movie stars left these days. Depp is certainly one of them.
Congrats to Mr. Depp, but I loathe the media’s never-ending obsession with the biggest money-making films of all time and blah, blah, blah. Hollywood loves it, of course; it’s not only free publicity but also a never-ending stream of hype, which, ultimately, serves to drive up ticket prices. The loser here is the ticket-buying public.
Harrison Ford?
But Johnny Depp is a character actor in the 2 movies. Does he have STAR POWER as we know it? In Alice, he is a minor character although he had star billing.
He had star billing, therefore he drove people to see the movie. His face is front and center in the poster and the trailers. He is why the movie had a huge opening and continues to have awareness.
FWIW, Depp very quietly does a LOT of charity work, for kids. He seems one of the few Hollywood good guys so his success is well deserved.
People like him, he’s one of the few Hollywood stars who give a performance, and seems a good guy.
Agreed. Seems like a thoughtful guy and his success is well deserved. Just being a good role model (I haven’t heard about any drugs or other troubles) is a positive. Nice to also hear about his charity work.
And Johnny got close to a third billion dollar film with “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” which grossed $961 million worldwide.
The Pirates…. series and, maybe, Alice in Wonderland, sure owed most, if not all, of their boxoffice successes to Johnny Depp. But let’s not get carried away and anoint Johnny Depp as the biggest boxoffice draw of all time.
Setting Pirates and Alice aside, here are the domestic boxoffice gross of Johnny Depp’s movies since year 2000:
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street P/DW $52,898,073
The Libertine Wein. $4,835,065
Public Enemies Uni. $97,104,620
Finding Neverland Mira. $51,680,613
From Hell Fox $31,602,566
The Man Who Cried Focus $747,092
Blow NL $52,990,775
Before Night Falls FL $4,242,892
Chocolat Mira. $71,509,363
The Ninth Gate Art. $18,661,336
Sleepy Hollow Par. $101,071,502
The Astronaut’s Wife NL $10,672,566
I must be getting old, WTF?
That!?

I give Depp all the credit in the world for Pirates. Not sure if the success of Alice had much to do with him, though. I’ve mostly heard people say how he was the weak link in the film.
You’ve “heard” he was the “weak link?” Guess you haven’t seen it. Never read that in any review or heard anyone say it. He was heavily featured in all the promotions, surely he had a lot to do with the box office. He was the only cast member who went to Japan, where it’s grossed over $100 million.
