When Alice in Wonderland this week became only the sixth film to cross the $1 billion gross mark, it certainly bolstered Johnny Depp’s case for being the biggest movie star in the world. He’s the only guy who has reached the $1 billion mark with two films. The other, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, is the fourth highest grossing film ever. While Will Smith usually leads the world’s biggest star discussion, he has yet to reach the $1 billion mark. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt haven’t hit it either. Leonardo DiCaprio hit it once with Titanic, but you could say the boat was the star in that enterprise. Same with Orlando Bloom, who finds himself on the list twice with Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Pirates, but it would be hard to argue he’s the reason. In fact, most of the billion dollar films are not star-driven spectacles, but Depp’s two entries certainly were. James Cameron is the only director to hit the billion dollar mark twice. He did it with Avatar and Titanic, the top grossing films of all time.

I hope Johnny Depp’s new PIRATES paycheck bleeds Disney dry.
Shame both the movies he accomplished that feat in are garbage. ‘Alice’ must be one of the biggest nonentities ever.
Johnny depp is a great actor and his charisma does those movies some good.hardly surprising but impressive.
Johnny Depp forever! His appeal on us will never fade!~ He is and will always be the guarantee of the box office~~~
Will Smith is still bigger. Anybody can take a big special effects movie to big grosses. Let’s see Depp take a small drama like Pursuit of Happyness to a gross over 160 million like Smith did, or a romantic comedy like Hitch that made over 170 million. Those kinds of movies don’t make that much coin, but Smith’s did. Also, Alice gets an asterisk because of the inflated 3D prices.
An amen to previous notes that Johnny takes risks-in movie vehicles and character development. (Burton has said as much) Giving CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow the comedic/tongue in cheek ‘stamp’ was all Johnny’s idea and; not surprizingly, had the ‘Disney nobbits’ very worried on the set. But it was ever thus that fearless, highly creative introspection on the part of actors will butt up against the money driven, old white man commandeered movie-making empire. Speaking of Mr. Burton, he was just one third of the draw on ALICE for me: Johnny, Burton and the ‘Fantasy Genre.’ Its been clear Burton truly enjoys fantasy and its certain Johnny loves risk taking with respect to his craft. Can I pick a match up or what?
There is more than just one actor in a film I dont think Johnny Depp should get all the credit after all he got paid for it he did not do it for nothing.
Johnny Depp is one hell of an actor and I love that he not only does a great job with parts he plays but he becomes role and he is one hot man
So, Orlando’s BO “doesn’t matter” and Depp’s does? LOL. Wow. Double standards much? Depp is highly overrated. He wasn’t the reason that Pirates were big at BO. It was a big team work and Orlando and Kiera had huge input into BO. Depp got lucky with Pirates because before he never had BO. Neither he had it on his own after POTC. Neither he is the reason of BO for Alice. It’s a very famous family book. Whoever played Mad Hatter the Alice still would be getting BO. BTW, he was not interesting as Mad Hatter – he was lazy and doing his Sparrow again. No make up was able to show Depp “stuck” in Sparrow mask. Depp’s own movies are not getting BO.
Good for Johnny! He’s a great actor. Though I’m not sure he was the main reason people went to see the movie.
