Kristen Stewart continues to use her Twilight momentum to make indie projects happen. Stewart, who starred in two of the higher profile films at Sundance– The Runaways and Welcome to the Rileys–just said yes to the Walter Salles-directed adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Garrett Hedlund plays Dean Moriarty, Stewart will play his wife Marylou. Sam Riley will also be in the film, which has an array of international producers. aiming for an August start date. It feels like Salles has been trying to get the movie going forever and while the drawing power of the Twilight cast hasn’t yet translated to box office on films outside the franchise, it’s hard not to like a young actress who is using her currency to do something cool, whether it seems like a big commercial bet or not.

Love her.
Go Kristen!! This is why she will be around a long time. She’s using her clout to make movies that people will remember long after they leave the theater.
She was astounding as Joan Jett and i’m sure will be great in Rileys.
I agree. Love her taste outside of the bloodsucker franchise. Can’t wait to see WELCOME TO THE RILEYS.
Big Kristen fan since Panic Room…

“Sam Riley will also be in the film” – He will be playing the character of Sal Paradise aka Jack Kerouac and the main character/voice of the film.
I love how the whole article is about Kristen Stewart, who is playing a supporting, and in the book very small character, and Sam Riley is playing the lead, and most important character, and he’s only an after thought. Everyone has been trying to get this made, so it’s not a labour of love for anyone. At one point this was a very popular book, with a young audience, now i doubt anyone who has read twilight has every even heard of it. Let it live on for lovers of the book, and keep your dirty hands off. I feel violated.
Sorry, but girl can not act.
It’s also hard not to like her because she’s talented, not a fame whore and stuck with her agency. Pretty cool trifecta.
Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarty? Seriously? Yikes. Find a new co-star Kristen.
I agree, very poor choice.
Am I the only one who thinks she’s a horrendous actress?
no she is horrible and has zero range, she is the female Michael Cera
Ha! So funny. Of course, I like Michael Cera too…
Yes.
Yes
In ‘Twilight’, sure, but she’s actually pretty good in ‘Into the Wild’ and ‘Adventureland.’
YES
No, you’re not alone. Her best acting was when she was frozen in ‘Zathura.’
I agree with Twihard and Hal. Kristen Stewart CANNOT ACT. It is painful to watch her on the big screen. Dakota Fanning outacted Kristen in every scene of The Runaways.
Kristen has a dead-eye look in every movie. And an acting style just as flat. Oh god. Three more movies left of her in the Twilight franchise. I don’t think I’ll make it.
Hal: You and the one person above who is a hater and maybe a few people with impaired vision. She is one of the best actresses of her generation. Perhaps you should see what she does with very little dialogue in “Into the Wild”
What ever happened to American Zoetrope’s “On the Road”? Would of been done by someone who at least remembers. Maybe they will up date it and “Catcher in the Rye” too.
They are co-producing.
Kristen is fantastic. I adore her more by the day.
It’s quite pitiful that people judge her all around performance as an actor on one role, when there are many many movies she’s done & kicked ass at. NO ONE would be able to make Bella Swan that likeable. If you think she can’t act, watch The Runaways & Welcome to the Riley’s. Wouldn’t surprise me if she got an Oscar nods for both. The Cake Eaters? Adventureland? Anyway…fantastic “young” actress.
She’s atrocious in Twilight, but so is everyone else due to the horrible script and direction. She was a revelation however in the Runaways, and her small turn in Into the Wild shows great potential. She’s a natural who needs to now work on her craft, and by the choices she’s making, she’s doing just that.
Hal:
Nope. She’s abysmal. Her being in this film instantly makes this a must-miss for me.
Sam Riley was amazing in Control, I saw Welcome to the Riley’s at Sundance and Kristen was frighteningly wild and feral in it. I have no doubt she can pull off MaryLou. What I am worried about though is Garrett Hedlund – he’s out of left field for Dean. He always comes off oafish to me.
Dean Moriarty/Neal Cassady was a tormented man raised by an alcoholic father on skid row who was in and out of reform school and prisons all his life. Such rebelliousness does not make for a dull person – which is borne out by the fact that everyone who met him described him as incredibly charismatic. He was also highly intelligent, leaving behind letters which were published and inspiring others to write books and poems about him. In short, we’re talking a figure of charisma and intelligence.
Sorry, but to me Hedlund simply does not project ANY of that. For instance, his acting in ‘Troy’ impressed me so little I couldn’t even remember he was in the film (and Hedlund played the pivotal role of Patroclus, no less). Frankly, Hedlund reminds me of Sam Worthington – all smoke but no fire. And the role of Moriarty/Cassady is ALL fire. This part really should be recast.
I doubt theres any actor who could really play Neal Cassady. The dearth of talent in young hollywood is a shining reflection off the cesspool of this myspace generations culture.
I’ll drink to that.
The girl not only she likes her job but is really talented. She kicked ass as joan jett and i think she can really put this character off.
No Hal / Twihard… you two are right on the money. Her acting skills today are no better than they were in “Catch That Kid.”
Why Garret Hedlund of all people? Strange.
Neither her champions or detractors have it right – kristen is a good actress with the potential to be great. You don’t have the likes of Mike Figgis and Barry Levinson hand picking your for projects, or in this case Francis Ford Coppola. At the same time her twilight fans oversell her in ways I’m sure that embarrasses her. Give her time to grow with her acting, and I think we’ll all be surprised of what she’s capable of.
The rumor is Garrett Hedlund was originally not even the front runner-he had great onscreen chemistry with both Stewart and Riley though, thus landing the part.Stewart’s been attached pre-Twilight actually, and it’s only gotten off the ground now. Riley was tapped before Hedlund as well.
In a conversation I had years ago with the Great William Burroughs he insisted “They will Ef it up.” “It should be easy cause it’s Like an Effing movie already that book.” “It’s a shame cause Jack put all of himself in there.” “He was never the same after he wrote it.”
Some people knock Kristen’s acting abilities then they should rent the movies Speak and The Cake Eaters. Not many young actresses today could pull off those performances as believable. They are 2 of her earlier films, but it was performances like that that got Hollywood’s attention and why she has been able to work with the big name actors.
Kristen is an amazing young actress. I’ve seen every film she’s been in and she just keeps getting better. She becomes the character and pulls you into believing she is the character. I look forward to seeing her in movies for many years to come and have no doubt we’ll see her accepting an Oscar one day.
