EXCLUSIVE: Little has been heard from The Matrix team of Larry and Andy Wachowski since 2008′s Speed Racer crashed. I’m told they are circulating a new script that brings them back to terrain they covered in 1996′s Bound, a heist film with a lesbian romance. This one’s a drama that focuses on a “hard R” homosexual relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi. It’s a cinema verite-style treatment that begins in the near future and then spans back over years that include the current war in Iraq. I’ve heard the siblings completed the script, want to direct it next, and that it is out to financiers. It sounds far afield of their trademark stuff, but then again, The Matrix seemed pretty far out when the siblings first pitched it. Will furnish more info when I get it.

How the mighty have fallen
Gross
Hey J,
You’re a dick.
Yep: GROSS.
They fell after the first Matrix.
When will Hollywood learn…stop with the war movies spun from a certain viewpoint over and over again.
What “certain viewpoint” is this spun from? We have no idea – in fact, I’m betting that to counterpoint the elephant in the room the soldier will be a pretty hardcore pro-Iraq War type. We all get what you’re saying. Just say it. You’ll feel better. We’ll feel better.
Oh how exciting. Another putative anti-war Iraq movie featuring life-like war fetish action sequences so we can all grovel over ourselves supporting “our” troops. Why don’t they make an accurate Iraq war movie showing drones killing women and children. Oh, I guess it would be too real.
It’s now Lana. Larry is a woman. Truth. Google it.
are you saying he somehow changed his chromosomes? wow that’s pretty incredible
Isn’t Larry “Lana” now?
Lana?
Geesh, they used to steal good ideas.
So all evidence to the contrary, you’re still going with “Larry”, huh?
At least Ebert will love it.
dude looks like he did become lady
It sounds fantastic! Could be the best Iraq film yet – and put The Hurt Locker in the shade!
Good idea, those Iraqi flicks have done so well. Yes I’m being a wise ass, sue me.
Actually, this is more representative of what and who they are. The Matrix was a good film, but not particularly original, mining Philip K. Dick territory in a fairly tight, limited, and disciplined manner mandated by budget. The Wachowskis HAD to entertain because they were not rich and famous and influential enough to indulge themselves.
The real Wachowskis stood up in the sequels, which were self-indulgent, undisciplined, all over the place, boring, and fairly icky. A movie that combines Cornel West Afro-supremacy and the world’s most boring orgy scene is stupendously bad in Plan Nine from Outer Space bad. But with a zillion times the budget.
Let’s review. One brother had a sex change operation and hangs out with a dominatrix famous for putting pins in places … pins should not go. The other is weird.
How likely is it that either of those clowns could make a movie that any ordinary person would want to see? And how likely is it that most average, ordinary people figure that pretty much everyone in Hollywood is debauched and decadent as that? It’s not just that Hollyweird is anti-Military (yep, the troops and their supporters will “love” a Hard-R gay love story) but also deeply deranged.
Hey Whiskey, this is the one time when your “feminization of Hollywood” shtick is truly accurate. I’m so disappointed you didn’t mention it.
At least Avatar won’t be profitable…not!
I love it when someone can write. And you…you, sir or madam Whiskey, you can write. Thanks for a post that literally made me laugh out loud.
Excuse me but The Matrix, IMHO, owes a lot more to William Gibson and maybe even a bit to early Neal Stephenson but particularly to Gibson than it does to Phillip K. Dick.
Sorry, there’s only one “l” in Mr. Dick’s first name, Philip. Major mistake by me.
As far as I’m concerned, “The Matrix” owes the most to Harlan Ellison’s “I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream.” There’s even a scene in which Keanu literally has no mouth as he tries to scream.
Don’t forget Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Megazone 23.
Philip Dick
Gibson
?????
Ever hear of Descartes?
Amen to that. Neither Gibson nor Dick were terribly original either. The idea of reality being only a construct that our sense data perceives a certain way is an ancient philosophical idea. None of these clowns came up with the idea.
None of them claimed to have come up with the idea either, clown.
I love how you think that “weirdness” is restricted to Hollywood and that most of the country is filled with “normal” people. In the internet age, if we’ve learned one thing, it’s that everyone is a freak.
Your judgmental attitude belongs in a bygone era.
The Wachowskis might be easy targets for your derision for a number of reasons, but I think it’s pretty obvious that they’re insanely talented, intelligent people. Writing off “The Matrix” as a P.K. Dick rip-off is disingenuous and reductive. “The Matrix Reloaded” was still good, and “Revolutions” was not even bad (even if the final two movies essentially marred the trilogy). “Speed Racer” was awesome to watch and enjoyable, and most people agree that “Bound” was a pretty remarkable indie movie. They’re far better than what most of the people on this thread are giving them credit for.
we know how everyone loves iraq war films…I’m sure they’re going to love a GAY iraq war film.
While it appears I’m one of the few unabashed Wachowski supporters on this thread, I will admit you may be 100 percent correct, sir. I say make it anyway. I’ll watch the crap out of it.
I live near their new post production studio in Chicago & I see very little being done there.
Strange building, not a sign on it to say what it is [Filmwerks], but it is green & has lots of cameras all over the outside.
I was roaming the halls of WMA when Dave the Wave was boasting about the Wachowski’s new project THE MATRIX and few of us “got it” (for, what was then, obvious reasons). My how times (people, places, things, etc.) change…
good for them. and by the way, it’s lana and not larry. i think she deserves some support for believing in herself and going through what was probably a difficult time. they’re not afraid to tackle difficult material. why are we only supportive if people do what we expect them to do?
Because it sounds like a dumb idea.
i find it a little disrespectful that this post still refers to Lana as Larry. Lana has been living her life as a woman for a long time now.
i don’t know why mike fleming would run this story with the name “Larry.”
Judging by the Matrix sequels as opposed to the original and everyone of their other movies it looks more and more like they stole the script to Matrix. Everyone of their movies suck.
Okay, but it’s Friday at 4:40 the week before the upfronts and we still don’t know the fate of a lot of pilots. Get crackin!
Respectfully and with thanks for your efforts
how do you mean mickeymoose? how have they fallen? they took their millions and millions of dollars, put it aside and decided to create a story that they felt was compelling. If you haven’t seen BOUND then you don’t know what the Wachowskis are truly capable of without a 1,000 SFX shots. Talented filmmakers, very curious to see what the story is here.
This reads like a laundry list of bad ideas… Combined they become possibly the worst idea I’ve every heard.
Why fallen? Maybe this is what they need to do after that awful Speed Racer.
Speed Racer is a materpiece and it was way ahead of its time. It will endure more than The Matrix. Speed Racer will become a classic in 20/30 years. No doubt about it. It is a film that shows how much those guys love cinema.
Speed Racer is a bloated kiddie movie written and directed from the perspective of adults who have no idea what made the premise so appealing in the first place.
Mike, baby, bubula! Ahhhh, er, ah – you mean LANA Wachowski. No kidding, babe. Gotta do our research better…
And they only want $150 million in CGI effects for the film.
Go away.
Brokeback Locker?
hahahaha!
