I hear this was made just for fun — and not for Dave’s show — by Justin and Eric Stangel, the head writers and exec producers of Letterman’s Late Show:
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Wow, that was completely unfunny. How do you have a job writing for Letterman when kids all across America are making funnier stuff than this every day? And their brothers? Ugh.
wow that was unbelievable stupid. i want my 2 minutes back
Not even airing and a trillion times more clever and funnier than anything Kimmel will have on Sunday.
I swear ABC keeps Kimmel on the air as a gag.
You’re obviously one of the dudes who made this, because there is nothing remotely humorous or witty about this. This is something a junior high school student would make, and even then, not funny at all. You should resign immediately.
This horribly unfunny “parody” reminds me why I stopped watching Letterman 5 years ago. This gentleman is the head writer? Wow. Sad, very sad.
So tell me…is Dave still doing will it float? Yeah…that was some kind of funny wasn’t it.
These are the people who think saying “canned ham” and then giggling passes for comedy writing.
This was funny? Really? Hell, Funny Or Die does funnier stuff than this and watching that crap should be included in the Geneva convention as cruel and inhuman punishment.
I guess it just goes to show that in Hollywood (or NY in this case), if you have a decent credit or a good friend who’s a movie/TV star, some people will believe that everything you do is funny…yes, I’m talking to you Adam McKay.
BRUTALLY UNFUNNY. MUSTVE WENT TO HARVARD
So basically these writers did a much less funny version of this Onion article (from 1 year ago):
I liked it. And aww I miss Will It Float!
Honestly, that was pretty unfunny.
And also, the smoke-monster spinoff joke has been made countless times on the web at this point. Lost jokes are already as old as the news that the show has ended.
How about making jokes about some of the new network lineups? Now, THAT is ripe for some humor. I mean, how many more procedurals does someone need in their life.
That was EXACTLY what I was thinking! I mean to not even change the character that the spin off was based on. This is deplorable
Man, you guys are brutal. They’re head WRITERS, and probably just did this as a way to kill some time. I didn’t see where it said they were producers, directors or even Photoshop enthusiasts. Give them a break. I’ll admit it was pretty weak, but this wasn’t aired on Letterman’s show, so why be haters?
The writing is what’s bad about this.
Earth to Jake…We’re being hard on a HEAD WRITER of a comedy show because the parody was not funny, and gee we all kinda think that when someone reaches the rank of HEAD WRITER of a comdey show, whatever they decide to put out with their “signatures” should be funny.
If it was made by some mattress salesman from Dekalb who doesn’t get paid to be funny…hey, way to go bro! Nice try. But knowing this lame-ass HEAD WRITER makes 6 figures based on his comedy chops, ecuse me if we expect it to be funny. Got it, Jake?
Job envy is a bitch, ain’t it?
Seriously, how much does it cost to rent a lav? $50? Treat yourself, fellas.
One of the least funny things I have ever seen.
I’m not trying to be mean. If an unemployed friend of a friend on Facebook posted that and said he made it on his Mac at home… I would still not think it was funny.
But two head writers on Letterman made that??? That is almost inconceivable. I read 100 comments from random schlubs on the internet that make better Lost jokes.
Have these guys ever met a network executive? Or did they just go from college and get in w Letterman? In order to satirize something, know thy subject. The funniest thing was that these guys are so clueless, that they actually gave themselves credit — CREDIT — on a one minute “short.”
Btw, for better and actually funny LOST parodies, EW has some funny posts w the Jacob and No Named Brother Actor Guy.
I’m not impressed with any of these talk show hosts (though letterman, conan, and ferguson at least have some good moments). They writing is generally atrocious on these shows, and they aren’t that funny nor engaging. And I’m an idiot.
If this pathetic video is the best that two of Letterman’s head writers can produce, I finally realize why Letterman hasn’t been funny for 10 years.
This is awful. This is completely awful.
Why would you even post this Nikki? Not funny.
Not. Funny. At. All.
The head writers of Letterman wrote this? How embarrassing.
If this is the head writers work they must be sleeping with Dave to keep the gig.
Oh ho…good one, Jake. Yes, sirree, bob. Ouch. You called it my friend. Wow. Such an intelligent man. Yes, you got me good with that pithy comeback of yours. Zzzzzzzz (Man you’re not only dumb, you’re boring. But before I fall asleep thinking of your sad existence…)
Yes, you MUST be right about me! Because I disagreed with your idiotic backing of this agreed-upon-by-everyone horrible parody, I must be envious of this HEAD WRITER and want his job. Brilliant deduction, Sherlock.
So tell me then, since I also dissed Megan Fox in a posting a few weeks ago…does that mean I’m a female actress wanting to be her? Because I dissed Brett Ratner a few weeks ago, does that make me a Director jealous because I’m not Brett Ratner? Because I dissed online Miley Cyrus, does that make me a 16 year old wanna be singer jealous because I’m not her also?
You see, Jake. I’m not a writer as you thought – but thanks for thinking it. I know I’m good. I’m just a guy with an opinion on that dumb parody that you thought was heck, not so bad. You see Jake, this is a forum where anyone who’s anyone can write what they want. It doesn’t mean we’re jealous of these people, it just means – like in my case today – that I think that HEAD WRITER’S video was shit.
And after your response to me, it now means that I feel bad for you and your lack of intelligence. I feel bad that you’ll probably write something even more wrong and pathetic after I post this, and you’ll never know that I won’t ever read it. You’ll think I did, but the truth is that I won’t. Why? Because once I post this, I’ll have the last word and I can have that by never ever seeing the garbage you may reply to me. Ricardo has kicked your ass, dude. Think twice next time you wacth a horrible video and try to defend it. Cheers!
I think this thing is hilarious. It’s intentionally dumb and that’s what makes it so funny. The shot of Schneider from One Day At A Time made me laugh out loud.
I”m with you Max. I think a lot of these people are just haters. I love the shot of the Smoke Monster holding the rope with the other kids. It’s just so stupid.
nope it’s a fail of epic proportions. you must be a co-worker of these not funny dudes.
Thanks, Stangel Brothers…. even your posts on here are lame. Hint: don’t let Dave tell the same monolog jokes for three weeks in a row. Once is enough, especially for the ones that are not funny.
So ballsy to put you name as “director” on something that features a guy talking against a white wall and a bunch of photoshopped photos designed by someone else. A Film by Justin and Eric Stangel! FAIL
