UPDATE WRITE-THRU: Warner Bros is making a deal with Carl Erik Rinsch to direct Logan’s Run, the remake of the 1976 futuristic science fiction film about a man who tries to outrun a mandatory death sentence before he turns 30.
Silver Pictures’ Joel Silver and Andrew Rona are producing with Weed Road’s Akiva Goldsman. Kerry Foster’s exec producer.
Rinsch intends to direct the film after he completes 47 Ronin, the Universal Pictures action film that will star Keanu Reeves. That film hasn’t been green lit but Hossein Amini is doing a script polish and the film is on track to begin production in January.
Rinsch pitched his own take on Logan’s Run, and the studio will soon hire a big writer to draft a version that is closer to the novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. The age of the protagonist will be closer to the book, where the protagonist realized he was going to be killed on his 21st birthday and fled. The original movie changed the age to be closer to that of the film’s star, Michael York. He played Logan 5, a “Sandman” whose job it was to put to sleep permanently those who try to escape a mandatory death sentence when they reach a certain age. That’s the only drawback of serene life in a domed city that protects the inhabitants who survived a holocaust in the 23rd Century. Overcrowding necessitates adults to choose to become runners who try to survive outside the bubble, or choose the “Carousel”–billed as a rebirth, but actually a death sentence. Logan 5 poses as a runner, but discovers the outside world is worth saving. He then is pursued by another Sandman.
Though he’ll make his feature directing debut on one of these pictures, Rinsch is building more buzz than most new directors and he has come close to some big jobs. He made his name as a protege of Ridley and Tony Scott, shooting commercials for their RSA banner. They set him to direct the Alien prequel at Fox, until Ridley Scott decided to make the film himself. More recently, he was on the short list of candidates to direct X-Men: First Class. Warners has been high on Logan’s Run for years. The studio and Silver seemed to have the picture on the fast track with Bryan Singer directing. But he ultimately dropped out of the film.
The project that really put Rinsch on the map at studios is The Gift, a short film that he created for electronics company Phillips, where five directors each made a film using the same few lines of dialogue. Online reports had studios bidding for a movie version of The Gift, but I’m told reliably that the project was never going to be a feature. It certainly made a fantastic calling card for the CAA-repped director. Watch the film below:

Actually in the 1970s movie the “death sentence” (disguised in the form of “carousel” or reincarnation) is imposed at age 30. In the book the age is 21. Not too far removed from today’s reality of how actresses’ careers are killed when they turn 30.
Logan’s Run: I really liked this movie … good news
I see why they’re remaking it, but have you read the latest draft? I have… Ugh…
Perfect timing. I just finished reading the 2006 Chris McQuarrie draft last night and thought it was terrific.
This sounds like yet another classic example of Hollywood improving something into a disaster.
Tim Sexton.
There are never enough revisionist remakes of 70′s dystopian flicks. I’m looking forward to a Soylent Green remake where Thorn would conclude with ” You’ve gotta tell them! Soylent Green is… good!”
The studio could make a deal with a fast food chain. The possibilities are infinite.
Here’s hoping his skill and subtlety don’t get lost in a KitchenAid script and studio antics.
Buuuuut it probably will.
That short was SICK! It’s always nice to read these kinds of stories where the people getting hired… actually have talent.
Being part of Young Hollywood, I had never heard of this film until a year ago when I met a comic book writer who was rewriting some Logan’s Run comics. I got it on netflix, and thought it was terrible in every way.
But I also understand that it is easy to call a 30 year old movie predictable when in it’s time it might have been a very smart film who’s storyline or style has now been beaten to death with movies since. I also know that it is easy to critique a sci-fi film that was pre-star wars technology. I grew up watching far better special effects on television then was available in studio films in the seventies, and this film seems to get obviously lost in my twenty-something generation. I look forward to seeing who Silver can pull together to make this film more visual, without losing the story. Can’t wait.
Brave of you to post such honesty, but I can’t help but beg “Go back to Ohio.” “Being part of Young Hollywood…” How YOUNG are you??… Four???
There is no need for anyone to ever go back to Ohio. That is where Logan is trying to escape from in the first place.
You just keep confirming the suspicion that you’re an idiot. Stop talking.
Logans Run is a classic but then again, I love 1970s Sci Fi. Anyway, of course it looks cheesy, it was done over 30 years ago and it probably didn’t have a big studio budget like a Star Wars or Close Encounters. I thought it was a great movie and good story line, one of my favorite movies of all time.
With that said, enjoy being young because it goes by fast, before you know it you will be in your late thirties. So you can look down on us older people but just remember, you will be there too!
calling urself part of “Young Hollywood” is like a director saying he’s an ‘auteur’….it’s just douche-y.
“Being part of Young Hollywood, I had never heard of this film until a year ago”
man…you are such a loser. you call yourself YH and never seen such a classic? and what kind of person call himself Young Hollywood? a real d-bag.
How about Megan Fox in the Farrah Fawcett role?
Megan Fox? Please god, no! Megan cannot act. There’s 1000′s of hot young females out there who can — hire one of them.
style over substance. all this does is imagine michael bay getting to CGI earlier in his career. Run will be as uninventive as this. what we need is soul, not edited effects.
I love Logan’s Run…..but is there a market for this? What is their target demographic?
None. There is no market for this film. This and Sgt. Rock are both confirmed bombs. As one of the few people willing to admit to liking Joel Silver and his B-movies, this makes me sad.
La Russe has it exactly right. The short is well made but completely shallow. Watch the other films in this Philips series — which is actually a clever idea: they gave five filmmakers the same few lines of dialogue and let them construct whatever they wanted, as long as they included those lines. They should have picked the film with the blind girl and the mule. It was too long and overwrought but at least the filmmaker got you to care about the characters.
this just proves that some films refuse to die. and given how long Warners has been trying to make Logan’s run . looks like the film is tired of starting and then not making it. should be interesting to see how much material they take from the book.
I heard they were going to do a remake years ago. Oh well, looking forward to this one. If anything, this movie will reflect on our obsession with looking young and how growing old is wrong, like we can help it. The irony of it all is that today’s youth will also grow old!
Thank you for the update on 47 Ronin. I’ve been excited about it since it was first announced. It sounds epic and unique. My Spider-senses tell me that it is going to be huge.
On the other hand, Logan’s Run sounds boring. Rinsch, you don’t need to be wasting your time with this.
I doubt, if he was doing this it would be under his new banner, not Silver and Weed Roard….plus the target demo for this film isnt 16-35 year old women
wups….meant to post the above reply to the post below me
I would seriously expect an announcement shortly that Zac Efron will be taking on the title role. He’s the right age and at the right studio.
And to the poster ‘Adam,’ DUDE, I still part of “young hollywood,” but man get your shit together. How many other movies have you not heard of? Get your shit together, or get out of town. There’s no room for anyone who doesn’t appreciate works of yesteryear. And yes, I’ll agree that the original film is cheese, but so was FLASH GORDON, and I fucking love that movie. And yes, there was a FLASH GORDON movie in the early 80′s.
LOVE LOVE LOVE the original ’76 Logan’s Run and cherish it on DVD for posterity: from its tacky sci-fi-cum-shopping mall production design, a fresh Farrah in the plastic surgery boutique, a fetching Jenny Agutter in a mini-tunic, Carousel, Sandmen, et al…but didn’t they already remake/rip-off this classic movie back in 2005 with Michael Bay-directed debacle THE ISLAND w/ Scarlett and Ewan? That lame movie bombed, but this new “reboot” just MAY succeed given the right script, director, & cast attached. Based on the short film above, it seems that at least Rinsch will be able to supply a great-LOOKING film. Still, the original Logan’s Run was more about IDEAS than just slick car chases, explosions, and high-tech thingamabobbers. That was then, this is now.
Nope. The Island is actually a remake of Parts: The Clonus Horror. Now THAT is a cheesy 70′s scifi movie! (But I can’t help but like it.)
Michael Bey did this movie and called it The Island. It sucked and so will this.
Dystopian novels are really for intellectuals. We are living in Logan’s Run right now.
Make Richard K. Morgan’s Altered Carbon. or Busch’s retrieval artist series and stop rehashing shit you cowardly a-holes.
you are right on with your comment “Dystopian novels are really for intellectuals”.
The one thing I pray they DON’T use from the Michael York movie is the part at the end where all the young people look at the very ancient Peter Ustinov (in makeup), and think he’s so wondrous & BEAUTIFUL. There’s NO WAY people in their 20s would find an 90 year old so attractive, since they’d never seen ‘old age’ in a human. In fact, they’d probably be terrified that this was now in their future.
Totally implausible & ridiculous – even when the film came out in 1976. And I was there! I worked as was an extra in the famous “Carousel Sequence”, watching the stuntpeople levitate on wire-rigs. And during lunch, I would walk thru all the futuristic sets, and saw the crews building the miniature model of Logan’s futuristic city, which occupied an entire soundstage floor.
During a break in shooting, I sketched the ‘Carousel’ scene on a big paper bag I had found… and an assistant director saw this & wanted to “borrow it” for a few minutes. He soon returned and asked me to come with him. He had shown my drawing to the director, Michael Anderson, who said he’d like to meet the artist. I remember Mr. Anderson, a very nice man, telling me, “Just imagine. This movie is the most expensive science fiction movie that will ever be made. There’ll never be another science fiction film with a budget like this again.” It’s budget was $9 million.
He would have been flabbergasted that in 33 years, a single movie would have a budget that exceeded the cost of his film by more than 35 times! James Cameron’s AVATAR.
thanks for the story grampa. yawn
If Silver is attached to this I hardly see why LR should be remade. It’s not like that hack can improve it. Logan’s Run is a good movie of it’s time.
As long as this movie leads the Syfy Channel to re-imagine the Logan’s Run TV series I’ll be happy!
favorite character from the original? The malevolent robot quite accurately named “Box”
