EXCLUSIVE: Several surprise hires in the Marvel universe today. First, Fox taps James McAvoy to play the young Professor Xavier in the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class. Now, Marvel Studios has picked a writer to draft Runaways, the live action film based on the cult favorite comic book (created by Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan) about the children of supervillains who try to use their evil powers for heroic purposes.
The job has gone to Drew Pearce. Considering the number of scribes who wanted the job, Pearce is a relative unknown but seems a good match for the subject matter when you consider his previous superhero work. Pearce is a British writer who created No Heroics, a humorous UK television series about a bar that’s a hangout for superheros, who aren’t allowed to use their powers while knocking back pints. Pearce will draft Runaways for Pete Sollett, the Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist director who was set in April to direct. His deal’s being made by WME, and here’s a peek at Pearce’s No Heroics:

If Brian K. Vaughn is a screenwriter, how come he didn’t adapt his own comic series?
Apparently he did and it wasn’t well received.
Brian K Vaughn did adapt it. it was a disaster.
Vaughn did, but he tanked just like he tanked his adaptation of Y-THE LAST MAN. He’s got talent as a screenwriter as is evident by his script ROUNDTABLE, but he’s not very good in adapting his own material. On another note, I’m honestly happier to see RUNAWAYS than I am to see X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.
That a shame I would have thought he would have written a great adaptation. I was hoping that BKV would have written it and Joss Whedon directed!
How do you guys know it tanked? I usally read all the Marvel news but didn’t hear anything about this – are there any good Marvel movie news sites?
Right on Drew!!!
This could really work. I love “No Heroics.” The concepts are marvelously off-kilter. The Spanish sixty-seconds-into-the-future dude had “quit the cape business” to concentrate on his masturbating. (Never thought I’d say that on this site.)
Couldn’t have happened to a better guy. Drew rocks and will be a superstar. Clever and gutsy move by Marvel, it will pay off because he will deliver.
I wonder how the negotiations are between Joss Whedon and Marvel for The Avengers? Does anyone know? I know that Jon Favreau said that Whedon hadn’t been confirmed yet.
Drew is an awesome writer. Fantastic news.
I could have sworn like a year or two ago that Brian K. Vaughn was writing a script for this film. It is possible that this new writer is starting from scratch or continuing with Vaughn’s script. But No Heroics was hilarious (which bodes well) and I wish that they had commissioned another series of it.
my first impression is that james macavoy is a weak choice for professor xavier. but hopefully i’m wrong. here’s my x-men reboot wish list
chloe (hit girl)- rouge
kellan lutz – cyclops
zoe saldana – jean grey (she should not be storm. plz don’t replace one minority actor with a minority actor)
megan fox – storm
zac efron – wolverine (because like hugh jackman, he can sing and dance)
clark duke (also from kick-ass and HTTM) – magneto
In the comics, Storm was black and Jean was white.
Brian K. Vaughn should write this. His “Roundtable” script (a feature) is awesome.
As is the original “Runaways” comic.
This makes no sense.
Tom Hardy is young Magneto.
Thanks for listening.
I actually see Jonathan Rhys Meyers as young magento
Okay, but what is BKV doing? He said he left LOST because he felt like a failure compared to Damon and Carlton and wanted to create his own thing. Without him, Season 5 of LOST could have easily fallen apart, but he hooked me when I was channel surfing and made me go back and watch all the episodes and follow season six after never having any interest. That is talent!
Nothing against Drew, but I did read Vaughan’s RUNAWAYS adaptation and it was astoundingly great — he’s one of the best writers working today. Only a matter of time before one of his original scripts gets the green light.
Truth: BKV and Drew are close friends. I have no doubt this was done with BKV’s consent and that he’s very creatively involved but was running up against some other deadlines projects.
Jon: Whedon directing Avengers is a done deal.
