MONDAY AM WRITETHRU:
SATURDAY 7 AM: Stats show that 90% of the audience was women. New Line/Warner Bros says Sex and the City 2 ended Friday #1 despite horrible reviews with a big domestic box office of $13 million (-9% from Thursday’s total) for a cume already of $27.2M. That’s an estimated 4-day Memorial Weekend number – Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday — around $53M. And $67M or so for the 5-day holiday.
Also with “mediogre” reviews, DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 4 was sitting comfortably in 2nd place because it was distributed by Paramount into 1,000+ more theaters at higher 3D ticket prices. It ended Friday with $11.3M (-45%) but that could be $50M for the 4-day holiday and estimated new cume of $149M.
Much is riding on Disney’s Prince of Persia in terms of price and prestige (a holdover from the Dick Cook administration though marketed by Rich Ross’ new one), not to mention whether Jake Gyllenhaal can open a big budget movie. But Jerry Bruckheimer’s period actioner based on the 2003 video game debuted a disappointing 3rd on Friday with about $10.3M. That should be $42M for the 4-day holiday.
Here’s the preliminary Top 10 with numbers to be refined later this morning:
1. Sex And the City 2 (NL/Warner Bros) NEW [3,445 Theaters]
Friday $13M, Estimated Weekend $53M, Estimated Cume $67M
2. Shrek Forever After (DWA/Paramount) Week 2 [4,367]
Friday $11.3M, Estimated Weekend $50M, Estimated Cume $149M
3. Prince Of Persia (Disney) NEW [3,646]
Friday $10.3M, Estimated Weekend $42M
4. Iron Man 2 (Marvel/Paramount) Week 4 [3,804]
Friday $4.0M, Estimated Weekend $18.5M, Estimated Cume $277M
5. Robin Hood (Universal) Week 3 [3,373]
Friday $2.8M, Estimated Weekend $12.5M, Estimated Cume $85M
6. Letters to Juliet (Summit) Week 3 [2,825]
Friday $1.8M, Estimated Weekend $7.5M, Estimated Cume $38.2M
7. Just Wright (Fox Searchlight) Week 3 [1,195]
Friday $595K, Estimated Weekend $2.7M, Estimated Cume $18.8M
8. Date Night (Fox) Week 8 [1,126]
Friday $502K, Estimated Weekend $1.8M, Estimated Cume $93.9M
9. MacGruber (Rogue/Universal) Week 2 [2,456]
Friday $460K (-72%), Estimated Weekend $2.0M, Estimated Cume $7.6M
10. Nightmare on Elm Street (NL/Warner Bros) Week 5 [891]
Friday $265K, Estimated Weekend $1M, Estimated Cume $62M
FRIDAY 8:20 AM UPDATE: Sources are saying Thursday gross was $14.3 million for Sex and the City 2, a strong number going into the weekend. After giving itself an extra day, Warner Bros will be looking for Friday business to stack up against the $26.7 million the original did on its opening Friday night.
FRIDAY 5:30 AM UPDATE: Sources say the Warner Bros sequel made a very strong $17.5 million on its rare Thursday opener (including $3M midnight showings in about 2,000 venues). That compares very favorably to the original’s $26.7M opening Friday as well as Indiana Jones’ pre-Memorial Weekend $25M Thursday debut. So now estimates have Sex And The City 2 earning $60+M for the 4-day weekend, and $75+M for the 5-day holiday. The original did $57M for its 3-day weekend.
THURSDAY 8:30 AM: The midnight showing of Sex and the City 2 turned in an estimated $3 million gross. That is 20% better than the $2.5 million midnight performance of the first film. It puts Warner Bros in strong position for a strong holiday opening for the film, despite the negative reviews the film has received. The film is open today on 3,445 theaters.
The original SATC surprised the studio when it turned in $2.5 million during its midnight opening. That pic turned in a $26.7 million opening day, which set it on course for a $57 million opening weekend on 3285 screens. The sequel is expected to do at least $60 million for the weekend, with more screens.

Good. When are execs going to realize that the marketplace needs more than just tentpoles focused on the male audience with idiot female characters (ah hem, I’m talking to you, Transformers) and that folks are quickly growing tired of all the comic book flicks? The reason why terrible films like the Twilight series do so well is because there’s nothing out there for the ladies. At least Sex is actually entertaining. Make a good film for the ladies and they will come out in droves.
Except Sex & the City 2 is a terrible movie with idiotic women behaving like materialistic morons.
And i wouldn’t contrast SATC2 with Twilight. Both films are well below average in quality yet women blindly still come out in droves to see them
Shame ‘female’ films can’t be any good. Mamma Mia is the biggest grossing film ever in the UK. It seems women movie goers are just as dumb as men.
Did you see The Runaways? That movie had a clear message for young women. It was both inspiring and cautionary. And it empowered them.
Showing women can do what they want in a man’s world.
It was the best movie i’ve see this year so far…and it happens to have 5 young women as the stars!
TRex – you thought The Runaways had a clear message for young women that was inspiring, cautionary, and empowering? You are a complete idiot.
Or a bad one.
@ Good – I would not exactly call the characters in SATC the antithesis of idiot female characters. On the contrary, they are stupid, shallow women. Those types of characters set the women’s movement back 30 years or so.
I almost lost my lunch when I saw the characters were going to Abu Dhabi and not getting stoned for their dress or behavior.
I agree. As a woman, I would have been less embarrassed at a porno film. The clothes were awful. The script ridiculous. I could go on but I think we are all in agreement.
Interesting that bad male movies get bashed every day (and they should) like Transformers yet these terrible female films dont?
This terrible Sex and the City is getting a 10% on RottenTomatoes. The critics hate it, and a bunch of people I have talked too who were looking forward to this movie and saw it opening night were very frustrated with it.
SEX AND THE CITY 3: RETIREMENT HOME
In Theaters May 2012
These women look AWFUL – how much work have they gotten done?? Seriously – they look plastic and completely fake – how can every day women identify with these cartoonish women? Their clothes are absurd to the point that they’re costumes – not even sexy or elegant dresses. I’m all for great film for women but wow – this is so sad. Why are women not offended by a film like this??
Also, Hollywood is making films for women – they just don’t go to see them (Letters To Juliet, The Bounty Hunter, Dear John, Valentine’s Day, Date Night, WHen In Rome, The Runaways)… all this year.
I’m sorry ‘Danny’ at 9:02pm, but did you just opine, that ‘The Bounty Hunter was a movie ‘for women?” Jesus Kee-RIST on a Cracker. I wanna show you some female empowerment by putting my stiletto thru your eardrum just for insulting my intelligence with that dumb sh*t. PLEASE – PUT the crack pipe and the hand delivered pay-roll check from Aniston’s agent, DOWN, and GTFO, you twaht. Now I KNOW you are some paid Aniston lackey hired by her gorilla PR dude.
.
So let me get this straight, tired worn out looking 40-something Aniston in The Booty Hunter, floundering around, whining and whimpering in a tight skirt and tank, being hoisted over the back of big brawny Gerry Butler as she futilely beats her perma-tanned fists against his broad shoulders & back (encased in male spanx)while he tosses her in a trunk, where she just lays there prone, sobbing and crying until he shuts the trunk in her face.
.
OH YEAH BABY! Now THAT is female EMPOWERMENT!!!
.
How about the scene where Aniston pretends to cry as she calls him from the trunk on her cell?
.
Wow, now THAT is a strong female heroine. STFU you stupid b*tch. You’re fooling no one. Go back to wiping Aniston’s a s s, that baby food HAS to keep you busy.
.
You showed your hand with that one comment. I recently read where Aniston remarked, she ‘never liked Sex in The City or movies that were only about the woman getting the man,’ — I think I laughed my spleen up at that remark coming from a lame no-talent weak woman whose made a sh*tty career out of her fauxmances and dial-a-dates – and regaling in women’s mags, how she wants kids and a partner…in between asking the world to feel sorry for her and be on her ‘team.’
.
Anyone who is a fan of SATC, KNOWS that that really isn’t what the show is about. She’s just dumb as a rock.
.
Congrats to the entire cast of SATC. I’m seeing it tonight!
Speaking of laying off the crack pipe….I don’t understand how you can be so crazily mad that someone associates the Bounty Hunter with being a “famale movie” and about “female empowerment” and than support SATC which couldn’t be less empowering for women. Go drink a cozmo and buy some shoes…that’ll show who has the power!!
What’s sad is that women not only put up with, but celebrate that women are not in control of satc, gay men are. And through those eyes woman become a hateful and sad combo of gay man sexual appetite, drag queen dress and misogyny toward actual women. Why can’t these women act like women? Why aren’t more women crying out against the fact that their stories, that should be from their experiences are being destroyed by men.
wow – i think this is the craziest post I have ever read. So much hate. Not sure what you do or what you read, but you need to get a grip. Anyone that has ever worked with JA knows she one the one the nicest women working in Hollywood today. All anyone can want for the nice people is continued success and wish them well. Why such hatred. She’s just an actress who likes doing her work, is nice about it and wishes other people well.
Life is short, find some happiness.
Because old actors are really great looking, right?
Misogynist idiot.
I can’t wait to see it!
And I am sure that it will crash and burn twice as fast in its second day of release as the first film did.
Guess there really are a load of lonely women out there. Keep eating the “Ben & Jerry’s” ladies….
Great God, is there no stopping this behemoth of banality? I thought aging would do the trick. Well, it does, there’s no chance in hell of confusing SJP with an attractive woman in her mid 30′s anymore. Alas! The flick kills at the box office.
God is dead.
God isn’t dead. He just hates you.
Hate him back. That’s what I do.
Ah, the sage advice of Martin Riggs. Well played.
Warner Bros. had better hope this does the box office it expects this weekend because it’s going to plummet over 60 % next weekend.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a major release get such negative reviews– some of them have been downright rabid in their attacks on this movie. The base will turn out in full force along with (very few) PW’d husbands/boyfriends.
the film will fall 75% it’s second week. mark my words.
Nope, ‘HereinFlyover’ (posting at 9:28am) I’d have to disagree – it hasn’t been that long at all “since a major release got such negative reviews.”
Sure, SATC 2 is currently at 16% on rottentomatoes, but let me direct you to the shiteous and most recent Aniston vehicle, ‘The Bounty Hunter,’ also a major release, which never got passed 8%.
Or even this weekend’s tepid impotent ‘Prince of Persia,’ starring the stud muffin that isn’t, Jake Gyllenhal.
Any husband or boyfriend who willingly agrees to go see this atrocious film should have their testicles immediately removed upon exiting the theater.
I would venture to guess that they have already had said testicles removed.
Add Transformers 1 and 2 to that list.
Flyover do you even know what the hell you’re talking about?
Would be nice if this actually meant something for better quality films about women being made, but I doubt it.
Women are making this an event. They make plans to see it with friends regardless of whether or not it’s good. Nostalgia + social aspect makes $$$
Nice!
I enjoyed the film. Closer in tone to the series than the overwrought first film. It was a funny, shallow, materialistic romp.
if only the music were better, this film could have been even bigger!
I’ve heard in the third movie the ladies all move down to Miami and Carrie’s wise-cracking Italian mother moves in.
Genius!
With the exception of Kim Catrall who is 52, these women are in their early and mid-40′s. Since when does that qualify them for a Miami rest home?
Although I didn’t care for the Middle East locale, the movie was absolutely hilarious. In fact, I saw it twice this past weekend. It was especially nice to see that Carrie and Big managed to stay married for the entire movie. Hopefully, Michael Patrick King has tired of breaking up these two characters.
Looking forward to SATC 3.
People keep commenting on the negative reviews. It has been pointed out time and again that places like rotten tomatoes are 75% men, most of the nerdboy variety. They’ll praise male genre dreg like Crank and Kick Ass and violently tear down female genre films. It happens over and over again, but people still act surprised.
Maybe SAtC isn’t great, but it is no worse than the typical male genre dud. However, it is getting much, much worse reviews. That is reflective of the misogynistic state of movie criticism more than anything else.
Oh give me a break. There are a lot of men critics on there who are liberal and terrible afraid to bash anything female as well.
Also its getting 10% on there. I clicked on the positive reviews and negative reviews to sort them and women critics hate it just as much as the men.
As of last night this only had 18 positive reviews. Only THREE of the positive reviews are female, the rest are males.
I halfway agree. I think it is good that women have a film to enjoy. Women are a neglected part of the film marketplace, no question, and Nikki is right about that.
FWIW, Conservative film blogger John Nolte at Big Hollywood gave it a good review. Many/Most of the negative reviews have to do with scenes criticizing Islam.
Islam is of course, America’s State Religion. Protected. You cannot criticize it, unlike Christianity and Judaism and Mormonism and Scientology. Matt and Trey did not get death threats over Scientology — they did over Mohammed (and they did not even show him!)
The first film seemed shallow, trivial, and Transformers-like only female (clothes, shopping, materialism, fashion, and men as accessories replacing giant robots and explosions). But that film made audiences happy and did not get the backlash.
Quote after quote after quote calls the film “insulting to Islam.” Well, so what? Film after film after film insults Christianity. No one cares or they celebrate it.
But Islam, clearly, is America’s State Religion. Given unique privileges and special exemptions above all others.
[Probably the worst message is that women have an unlimited attraction window. Samantha at age 53 will be ignored by hot young guys in reality unless she paid them. The film encourages younger women to overestimate the power and duration of their beauty. It is considerable, but like a Spring thunderstorm -- powerful, then gone.]
Yeah, isn’t it odd how all those critics who had no problem with Da Vinci Code or Religulous or Golden Compass, or any of the countless other Hollywood films that malign Christians, are suddenly all yammering about “respect” and “sensitivity” when a movie dares to poke fun at Muslims? What a pack of bloviating hypocrites.
Hmmm…SITC2 is contemptuous of both gays and Islam. C’mon, it deserves a solid B for that alone.
You just lost credibility by calling Kick Ass dreck. That has a very high rt meter while S&TC is very low. Have a nice life in bass ackwards land.
“Male genre dreg”…
i’m not male, but Crank is kind of a masterwork of chaotic imagination, and one of the absolute best movies released over the last 10 years. Kick-Ass is less so, but still up there. You might want to pick examples to support your bigoted arguments a bit more carefully.
What a shame that this dreck still attracts so many women.
The female audience is starved of anything of quality or meaning aimed their way. Certainly there’s plenty of garbage pics that come and go that men run to throw their money at and see.
The big difference is that this was once something of quality.
When this series began it was actually a nice if not orginal, The Golden Girls did it first and much, much better, quirky piece on female singledom and friendship. The last two seasons and in particular these two films have turned it into an aged, bloated and garish behemoth.
These are the kind of women you not only don’t want to be like you don’t want to be anywhere near them. Privleged and haughty there’s nothing they want that they don’t get long as they are white, skinny, rich and covered head to toe in meaningless and ridiculous looking designer names. Of course all they really want is a man with marriage and kids; preferably that they gave birth to. Blah.
The men are only there to worship them. They took the only two Gay male characters and are inexplicably marrying them to each other!? I guess that’s because there’s only a handful of Gay men in NYC for them to pick from. That in a travisty sequence Starr must have thought a clever plug for same-sex marriage by boiling gay men down to fawning Liza-queens!? More gaudiness with not an ounce of thought or emotion behind it.
A total insult for the eyes, ears and mind. May it now die.
My error, I blamed this on Darren Starr when the fault lies totally on the rancid abilities of Michael Patrick KING.
Agreed for the most part but … There are not that many gays, even in NYC. And gay men are not known for say, geeky/nerdy masculine obsessions like Baseball stats or NFL fantasy leagues. They most are Liza or Bette Midler fans who know every Broadway showtune.
Gay weddings are indeed, very, very gay for the most part. Besides that scene was funny!
LOL. My straight friends are confused because I have season tix to three sports here, formed our Fantasy baseball and football leagues and would rather cut off my arm than lose ESPN or ESPNU. Oh, no Liza or Bette and I’ve never seen an episode of SATC or the movies — I’m a box office numbers nut. Sounds like this piece of crap is going to do good numbers this weekend.
whiskey was too busy pounding his pud to the perceived anti-Islam stance to make anything resembling a logical comment regarding what gay males like or dislike. Wow, stereotype much? Maybe you think have your finger on the throbbing pulse of what some queeny old troll in Chelsea swoons over, but you clearly have no business making declarative statements as to what we like or dislike. I’ll take Wilco over Liza any day of the week, thank you.
Woot woot! Can’t wait to see this. I’m not expecting high-art here, screw the reviewers…most are embittered armchair screenwriters anyway. This just looks like FUN!
It does?
….But they are SOOOOO old….
Well, no, in reality they’re the same age as Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and Sandy Bullock. They’re in their 40s – but I don’t think they need to be ‘put down,’ because of it.
Sloppy dumb faced fat ass’d Adam Sandler is making romantic movies with supermodels he could have fathered in the 80s, Woody Allen has just deemed himself too old to play opposite his usual almost-jail bait actresses (I guess 60 yrs someone’s senior, was too much even for his sensibilities) I find all of that just as heave-worthy.
So why are you knocking 4 women who made themselves and HBO about a hundred million in profit with their own blood, sweat and tears AND product over a good decade. Obviously, there’s a ready made market and audience. It’s not like someone is sitting around and just NOW creating the SATC premise – it’s a good 12 yrs old. Why are people acting surprised, or talking as if the notion, the premise, and the actresses just recently were conceived like some new vomit inducing Aniston rom-com pablum.
Lastly…
Look, your mother is also ‘old’ would you like to just shoot her in the head too, since she really isn’t good for anything any more according to you?
Annoying how people criticize and actor for being old, like they can help it. Unfortunately, ageism is alive and well. We are all going to get old!
Jerry, it’s not that they’re just old, it’s their age relative to the behavior of the characters. Right? I know everyone loves a cause — ageism — but that’s clearly not what people are talking about here. No need to get offended.
Long time series fan here. The movie is horrendous. I left after forty minutes. Michael Patrick King made the very unwise decision to sidestep the current economic crisis in favor of escapism…pussy move. Someone put this dead horse out of its misery. TIME WARNER EVIL CORPORATELY MANDATED SEQUELS SUCK!
Yeah that’s what I thought too seeing the trailers and reading the reviews – totally ridiculous to make a movie about materialistic escapism in these times. Very very out of touch. I’m sure they have some explanation like escapism makes people feel better. Well not really, because the world knows full well the actors and filmmakers involved have plenty money, recession be darned, just the audience doesn’t have it and won’t for the next generation or two. What’s fun about that? When this hbo show premiered and I’d hear the claim (which I was convinced was merely marketing and a lie, as I knew no woman who felt this way) the women on the show “talk just like me!”…cue shrill stupid voice…it offended me so much I couldn’t even enjoy the brainless entertainment of it until years later.
Yeah — because I’m sure MPK was kicking and screaming as he was
forced by evil warner bros to write and direct this 3 hr sequel.
Women being as dumb as men is the best story to come out of the business in a long time. I for one am loving it. I am in Germany now and the posters are here everywhere and I have to say I don’t know if it’s the crappy Berlin weather or the lack of America but these women look ridiculous on the poster…almost comical Maybe it’s the fact that I am in a city and the posters at near eye level are also almost billboard size so I can see every angle and photoshop stroke on their faces.
In the land of optimism we at least have the decency to place large objects far away and higher up but those Germans know just how to stop me from seeing this movie
I saw some really botched photoshopping on Sex and the City 2 posters featured on huffington post. I’d love to know who was responsible– Cattrall and Parker looked like monsters (and really I think both women are attractive and didn’t deserve to be tweaked the way they were). The distortion alone made me really turned off to seeing the movie and the shitty reviews sealed the deal.
Many of my girlfriends went to the Thursday night showing. They felt compelled to out of their loyalty and love of the series and the first movie.
However, down to a woman they all agreed this was a horrible film and feel like they’re not going to want to see another.
I think Warner better hope for one great weekend. It doesn’t sound like they’re going to get another.
Sorry, I work at a movie theater and always ask the exiting patrons what they thought of the movie. The women loved and the men thought it wasnt as bad as they were fearing. However, some people do passionately hate this film
I have not heard that from a single woman yet who has seen the film. Hmmmmmmmm…..
I thought the movie was fun and Rex Reed’s review was also
funny.
Rex Reed also loved,”You Can’t Stop The Music” Starring the Village People!
Suck in the City 2!
Very depressing on so many levels.
Do yourself a favor and skip this one. I wish I had!
OMG I loved it!!! Don’t believe the paid for haters that are infiltrating Nikke’s boards. I’m seeing it AGAIN tomorrow!! I took my mom and sister tonight, tomorrow am going with friends! It was a really good time!!!
I agree, it was great! I loved it so much – it was hilarious and moving. Ready for SATC3!!
Some people on here are being paid to trash this movie – they’re just industry haters, plain & simple, probably mad because the fanboy movie that wasn’t(see princess of persia), flopped.
Jesse and satclover, you’re both idiots. You really think anyone is paid to trash the movie? The fact that you both think there are “paid haters” makes you’re opinion of the movie worthless, and only solidifies in my mind that people who see this movie are idiots.
And hardly anyone has even mentioned Price of Persia…it is not a fanboy movie…there weren’t that many fans.
Seriously, Jesse and satclover, if anything you guys sound like you are getting paid to promote SATC2.
One exclamation mark too many to be believable.
SATC2 didn’t have a story to tell–or a compelling artistic need to find anything interesting or new about these characters. That was what made the series work so well–and without that all you’ve got is a (horrible) fashion show. And SATC2 represents a real failure of imagination. Say what you like about the series, it was one of the few that got at the truth about how women deal with romance, sex, money, ambition, friendship. And for SATC2 to fall back on the Hollywood “women as ditzy stupid clotheshorses” trope that you can find in any lousy chick flick is just disheartening. (Man, is the chick-flick trope, the Nancy Meyers “older women are just chicks grown up,” or the TWLIGHT “women are nothing without a powerful creepy lover” deal the only ones that make money? It’s not like Hollywood hasn’t tried with THE RUNAWAYS, WHIP IT, or even JENNIFER’S BODY.
Wow. Bad movies make huge money all the time, Michael Bay built his career on that, why is so horrible that a bad movie, starring 4 40+ women, makes big money? How is that a bad thing for the industry, for the economy, for anyone really? Don’t want to see it, don’t go, but why such hate? Why is the standard set so high for a female driven movie, why must it deal with the bad economy, prejudice, morality or anything else for that matter? Why can’t it be fun over the top wish fulfillment eye candy for an audience that doesn’t take it seriously and just wants some pure escapism? No one sets the bar high on these issues for the male driven Transformers, Star Trek, Iron Man, Prince of Persia, The Hangover, which are fun over the top wish fulfillment eye candy for men. A movie got made, money was made, people were employed before, during and after because of the movie, it’s a win-win. Everyone benefits. The fact that SITC2 may beat Prince of Persia, well that’s just icing on the cake and in an industry that tends to treat women like pieces of shit, it’s nice for once to have our cake and eat it too.
thanks snarky! i couldn’t have said it better myself. great post!
Indeed. Very well put.
In the case of SATC2 I think critics and discerning audience members set the standard a bit higher because the television show off which it is based had wit, intelligence and an actual soul. Yet it sounds as if this sequel is a bastardization of the source material–as mindless as anything based off a video game or toy.
Of course women are just as stupid as men. Shitty Hollywood movies appeal to both genders, obviously.
Despite what conservatives think, it is because Hollywood is conservative as far as its business model goes. They assume that only white straight males from the age of 18-35 can drive the box office.
Thus, a movie, however good or bad it is, doing well economic being driven by 4 horny over 40 women where men play a secondary supporting role is goes against what Hollywood thinks.
This is true of nearly any group who fits outside of the Hollywood conservative model. Whether it is women, gays, people of color, age groups, etc.
I had an executive with whom I am friends with ask me what did I think they could do to attract the straight, white, 18-35 male market. I said– “How about focusing on other markets.”
She gave me this look like I had committed a capital offense. And, yeah, she’s a woman in the industry making creative decisions. That’s how deep these conservative ideas of what to make in the industry become what we we all the time.
Because it justifies to the studios that they can continue to make crappy movies without trying and people will continue to lap it up.
I would be happy that Persia came in 3rd, so it hopefully shows Hollywood to STOP making POOR adaptations of awesome video games, alas by making $42M opening weekend in the states, it’s well on it’s way to being seen as a success from a financial standpoint. I’m sure it will do very well overseas and wind up making Disney a profit, even if it is a small one, and far less than what they hoped.
I’m glad a female lead film came in #1, unfortunately like many pointed out above, that movie demonstrates everything that’s wrong with 21-39 year old women of today. Superficiality, lack of self-respect, lack of self-awareness, lack of self strength, lack of depth….all common themes in SatC. They’re a bunch of whoring shopaholics without any real stories to tell. All of their “problems” are self created. It’s rather sad, and telling, that so many women love and relate to the women in this film. Instead of recognizing that these women are the exact opposite of what they should be, they look at them as representations of themselves or something to aspire to. And that’s scary.
Women of today have a skewed view of a “successful life” and what’s important in it. Women like those who relate to the characters of SatC are probably the first to tout feministic idealogies, patting themselves on the back because they have a college degree and money in the bank, as if that makes them powerful or better off than their mothers….meanwhile they sit around longing for a man to complete them, and offering themselves up to any who offer to do so, even if for a night, then drown all their self-created sorrows in alcohol and sit around in circles of BFFs exchanging “advice”.
Empowerment is on the inside ladies, not the outside. You can carry prada handbags, wear Jimmy Choos, be an executive, and drive a nice care, but you’re not empowered until you’re at one with yourself. When you’re complete, and you know and fully love yourself for you, not the clothes you wear or job you have, then you can be successful in every walk of life, including a relationship.
It’s painfully obvious that you have NEVER watched the show.
One wonders why me0w, is just now touting this b.s. when SATC debuted in the late 90s, and had a 12 yr run. lol Did you write HBO weekly and complain back when SATC was the most watched show in their Sunday line-up? Fact of the matter is, there were lessons to be learned — it essentially was telling women how NOT to be doormats in their quest for self-fulfillment. Why do you think ‘He’s Not That Into You,’ ripped them off so thoroughly (the book, not the horrid crapola movie)? It ultimately was about what they would NOT put up with – the women were always more self-realized at the end of the show. If you want female dis-empowerment, watch Desperate Housewives created by the misogynistic gay guy who likes slapping his actresses in the face. Leave the empowering foursome that is the SATC women, alone, ya hypocrite. Oh, and your screenname suits you…’meow.’
Actually I have watched it. I tried repeatedly to watch it. And all I saw was profusely unattractive leads, horrible acting, and “jokes” that weren’t funny. And some soft core porn of course. That’s it. So I’m not “just now” touting anything. I’ve always felt this way, thanks.
I think the opening sequence to the first film said it all: these women have two goals, which are shopping for labels and finding love (and the latter by any means necessary). How empowering! Not.
Now go on and have another martini and drool over the cute young waiter while you talk about your loser boyfriend who won’t commit, in between showing off your new purse and shoes of course. Since if you relate to SatC, then that’s probably all you have: shallow, hollow lives of superficiality and search for fulfillment via outside sources instead of searching inside self-analysis.
Wouldn’t be too fast to proclaim this a financial success. PofP was extremely expensive with a production budget somewhere between $200m and $250m. This also has all the P&A of a mega-release so you know what that means. And by all accounts, this is hardly a Pirates where it’s actually good & will run and run and run. It’s not particularly good.
3x is charitable; factor in that the “opening” weekend was a holiday weekend and that this is summer and getting much over $100m domestic looks like a chore.
Not what you expect out of that sort of investment.
Can this movie fade into the woodwork already? If I have to look at those four airbrushed slags for another minute, my face will melt like those Nazis at the end of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”.
My first laugh of the day – ‘air brushed slags’!!!
You know I am glad I don’t have to see this picture. I am glad I have a choice in life. I see why Warner Bros will do it. They know regardless of how we(men) and critics view it, there still will be money to be made.
Now I am looking forward to SPLICE from Warner Bros. Twilight and SCT2 are all chick flick movies which I have no time for. For the time being let the money roll and let the girls make some cash.
Cheers people.
