ABC and Sony TV have tapped Smallville creators/executive producers Al Gough and Miles Millar to
write a new script for the network’s reboot of Charlie’s Angels. The project was originally set up at ABC in November with Josh Friedman as a writer and a pilot commitment. But it didn’t go to a pilot stage and is now being reworked for off-cycle pilot order consideration. Gough and Millar will be writing through the two-year overall deal they recently signed with Sony TV. They will serve as executive producers alongside original Charlie’s Angels producer Leonard Goldberg as well as Drew Barrymore and her producing partner Nancy Juvonen, who were behind the two Charlie’s Angels features. It is not unusual for the networks to take multiple stabs at revamping classic series. CBS picked up Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Peter Lenkov’s Hawaii Five-O to series this year after first developing an updated version of the 1968 cop show last season with writer Ed Bernero. The CAA-repped Millar and Gough created Smallville based on the DC Comics characters and ran the series for the first eight seasons.

Nother’ slam dunk for ABC — right in the shitter.
Steve McPherson, I hope you’re reading this (and I know you are), there are major concerns amongst the higher ups, and they’re not gonna let you fire everyone like you did the last go-around.
This time it’s your neck…
MAKE IT WORK
Why…is this thing a must have on TV? Is there nothing these two guys can be commissioned for except this dribble. I went to a book signing at the Mystery Book Store in Westwood yesterday for a book with ten short stories. Anyone of these stories would be better then rehashing Aaron Spelling right now. He is gotta be turning over in his grave laughing that he still gets paid.
Very Sad….state of affairs
NMA
no more angels
Shame on Miles and Al. They are better than this.
No, they’re not…
The Josh Friedman draft of this was absolutely fantastic. Alias in tone, but a better piece overall. It completely reinvented the show in a great way. When I heard he left over creative differences… I remembered that ABC was still ABC.
Everything old is new again.
They ran Smallville the first seven seasons, not eight. They did a good job in the beginning, but by the time of the writers’ strike, they were clearly out of ideas. It was for the best that they then parted ways with the show. Smallville experienced a creative rejuvenation and increased momentum after they left.
Lots of critics rag on their (and the show’s) canon deviations, but credit, where credit is due. They made the perfect “boring” old Superman modern and appealing to a younger generation. On the flip side, way too much Lana. Plus, to my tastes, there is now too much canon comic book stuff on the show, since they left. There are too few comic book fans left in existence to mess up a perfectly good show because of them. I wish the movie people would learn that lesson too. Stop catering to fanboys. There are too few of them to matter.
Fanboys are too few to matter. But superheros work for a reason. Using Gardner Fox characters like oh, say the Flash or Hawkman is a no brainer. Same for Star Girl, or Doctor Fate.
Millions of kids read those comics. The characters are still around and loved, more than sixty years after they appeared in some cases. Superman was never “boring” and that’s why the character is still loved after 70 odd years.
Millar and Gough refused the obvious: in a series about young Superman, use superheroes from DC’s canon. Instead of focusing on Perfect Princess Lana Lang. Bill Parker, Siegel and Schuster, Gardner Fox, they knew a thing or two about creating characters with a pulp energy missing from today’s focus-grouped, female-skewing creations.
Yes fanboys do not make up an audience, but characters that have hung on for decades, created by beloved and successful writers, deserve respect and should be used to the fullest extent. Millar and Gough did what I thought impossible — they made Superman into a whiny, WB male model pouter.
Please, no more remakes/reboots. The failed Rockford pilot (and failed new “Knight Rider”) should be a cautionary tale that not everything that is “known” actually works. Really, can we all stop watching cable re-runs of 30 and 40-yuear-old shows without thinking “bet we could update that”?
Do we really need new broadcast versions of “Charlie’s Angels”, much les yet another version of “La Femme Nikita”? (What is that, 3 versions now and counting?).
Is there no one with any creativity at the nets anymore?
Josh Friedman is a much better idea!
ABC can DIAF after that Lost conclusion.
ABC, you better watch your back cause NBC is knocking on your door and most of NBC’s pilots are quite good this year except for Outsourced which is horrible.
PATHETIC! PATHETIC! PATHETIC! You gotta be kidding me – Charlies Angels? Hawaii Five-O? What next? Captain Kangaroo? Peter Gunn? How about Drew Barrymore presents the Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet? Gough & Millar should be damned ashamed of themselves. After Smallville, with all their new clout, THIS is what they chose to do? Hey guys, could you bring back Father Knows Best, too? Maybe a NEW I Love Lucy?!
This is plain and simple shit-for-brains programming. We’re striding into the future BACKWARDS. 99% of TV stinks, and these guys & women are among the reasons why.
Unfortunately I feel the same. If they can really change it and make it hard and gritty with some food for thought, then it will be a chick flic which is only feast for the eyes.
We will have to wait and see but I fear the worse. fingers crossed for the better.
I wish they would just make a third movie. For this to be in syndication — are they insane?
They did a good job in the beginning, but by the time of the writers’ strike,
Ah geez. I guess this means we should be prepared for 3 bland 19-year old flavor of the month “actresses” to play the Angels.
Great.
oh wow this will be TOTALLY DIFFERENT than the original because these chicks will KICK ASS
yawn
also countdown until the episode where a guest angel turns out to be a tranny (Venus Williams guest starring)
For the second time in one week: if the project is a remake or adaptation- no matter how important the person in charge may be, they are NOT the “creator”.
If you want to earn the right to be called a “creator”, you really have to, you know, actually CREATE something…as unfashionable as that is these days.
What is this, about the fourth time ABC has tried to redo ‘Charlie’s Angels’?
Give up already, all the other remakes that have been done the last few years have flopped.
Miles and Al are much slimmer than this old photo! They are sexy, lean and talented young men. One of them dresses better than the other.
I’m waiting for Fantasy Island, since Sony controls both CA and FI. I can hear it now “da plane da plane” or maybe remake those old Screen Gems 70′s shows Flying Nun, Bewitched. lol I like how people get so annoyed about remakes.
They either work or they don’t no one really cares what the Hollywood purists care about, it’s those little Nielsen boxes that really matter.
The problem with re-boots is that they need to be small productions (usually on cable) and given a couple of seasons to grow. The networks do not allow that to happen.
BSG was done the right way, Bionic Woman the absolute wrong way. Charlies Angel’s should be a USA or TBS show; being on ABC is a sign of death.
al and milles barely ran the show. they want to be movie director’s but they cannot get hired so they need to find someone else’s idea to write… abc will be sorry when the script comes in and they demand that they direct the pilot!
This was all CAA could come up with for them? I LOVED Smallville!
Doesn’t anyone in HW ever have any new ideas? I feel like I’m stuck in a time warp where the only entertainment available is bad ’70s and ’80s tv shows and movies. Do these idiots in HW know it’s 2010? God. No wonder I’m about ready to sell my tv to drop-kick my tv out the window.
Smallville is the best SHOW EVER!! I have watched all 9 seasons, loved the season finale and can’t wait for season 10!! Hope they continue the show for even more seasons. It has an awesome plot amazing characters and I can’t wait to see where they take the show for season 10. The writers are amazing and I hope Clark finally learns how to fly and gets his red and blue suit…Overall its my favorite show and cant wait to see what comes next!! It was also cool having Martha Kent come home, and is LEX Luthor coming back?
Me again. Seriously, they really have lost a ton of weight.
