The Inbetweeners are coming to the U.S. via MTV. After a heated bidding for the rights to the British high school comedy series, I hear MTV is close to giving a pilot commitment to the project, from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, creators of the original series which runs on Channel 4′s digital sibling E4, will executive produce alongside Kaplan. Former Comedy Central head of original programming Lauren Corrao, who stepped down at the end of last year to return to producing, is also attached to the project as producer. Search is under way for a writer to pen the adaptation.
Described as Superbad meets Freeks and Geeks, The Inbetweeners takes a realistic look at life in high school, often glamorized on shows like The O.C. and Beverly Hills 90210. It revolves around four high school boys who belong to the “inbetweeners” social class — teens who are not the most cool and popular but not geeky enough to be branded uncool. This is the second stab at adapting The Inbetweeners in the U.S. Two years ago, ABC gave a put pilot commitment to an U.S. version written by Morris and Beesley.
For MTV, this marks the second project based on a high-profile British teen series. The network recently picked up to series an adaptation of drama Skins, which also airs on E4. It also gave a series order to an updated version of Teen Wolf.

It’s a great show but but it’ll be way too sanitized to get on US network TV.
PS – ‘inbetweeneres’ is actually a reference to their age: no longer children but not quite adults.
We’re talking MTV here; I’m sure it’ll reach for the lowest common denominator when it comes to depictions of teen lust and general depravity. Just look at what’s on MTV now.
Listen if ur not a Brit and dont appreciate humour be off with ye self ye twit
No, it’s not; it has nothing to do with their age.
The inbetweeners derives from the idea; a group of lads who aren’t cool enough to be popular, but not nerdy enough to be losers hence, inbetweeners.
A scenario most people can probably relate to.
Nice. MTV: get the rights to Misfits and it’ll be a hat trick!
A brilliant show.
the death of original ideas continues…
at least skins is an interesting show; inbetweeners is a snoozer, and i can’t imagine a version that has anything interesting to say about american culture/adolescence.
It’s awful, campy shit. Perfect for MTV.
Do you know what “camp” means?
I thought MTV was producing their own scripted ‘High School’ show for the Fall, as mentioned on this website just a few weeks ago… I have to imagine this will make their own offering look a little bit …weak?
Inbetweeners is a brilliant, hilarious show. MTV will inevitably ruin it.
Amen to that.
The Inbetweeners is the funniest show currently on television (yes, topping 30 Rock folks) and I can’t wait to see how badly MTV f*cks it up. How do you remake perfection?
justgonnaeffitup is probably right. but i’m optimistic.
Another great BBC series being turned to shit in the U.S.
you know the BBC never touched the Inbetweeners its on E4.
MTV should have went with the “Band Geeks” pilot by Joe Lovero instead of this. I know Band Geeks was well thought of at the network. It’s my favorite pilot I read all season. I thought it was Apatow meets Entourage with Indie Rock thrown in. If they had any brains, they’d hire the Band Geeks guy to write this.
I was hoping a version of In-betweeners would make the big screen but now that MTV has it, I think transplanting its English voice to America will dilute its appeal.
Sorry but the people who are saying this is bad, must be american. This is one of the best programes going.
The Inbetweeners is a British Comedy show. MTV will ruin it and make us look dumb. Leave it alone, don’t ruin another great British comedy with a dumb American version.
There’s zero chance this show will survive its MTVization process. Just watch the original show and hope this version never sees the light of day.
Just watched the pilot on MTV. It has its humorous moments, but it’s basically a completely different show. All of the main character’s friends from the BBC comedy have been rolled into one overweight, slightly-gay dude. The humor is even more juvenile than anticipated, and it certainly seems like MTV is pandering for the double-digit IQ audience. It took me until almost the end of the episode before I went, “Huh. This guy looks familiar. Is this an American Inbetweeners?” There’s no way this show can compare with its British counterpart, which is why I think they’re going a completely different route with it.
it wasn’t on BBC why are people saying this, it was on C4
I gotta say I’m pretty hesitant to believe that this will be good. I mean the only good shows MTV has had in the last twenty years (F*** AM I REALLY THAT OLD?!) involved the “Jackass” guys. “The Inbetweeners” is brilliant, but an american version will likely be dumbed down (not to imply that “The Inbetweeners” is some kind of refined and intellectual show). This show will cater to it’s audience, which is teenagers in america and let’s be honest, the average american teenager is pretty godd*** stupid. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this will be almost identical to that s*** show about that nerds d**k that’s on right now. F*** MTV original programming, f*** american teen humor, f*** american remakes and f*** the executives. Basically, f*** MTV, hard, in the a**.
I am american and I completely love the series. I really wish this wouldn’t happen as it would surely ruin the show. why re-do it? come up with something yourself mtv! my god just play goddamn music videos and leave the comedies for the british, who already got it right.
I’m an American (teen) and I know for a fact MTV will ruin The Inbetweeners. I love that show. I hate MTV because of shows like “The Hills” and “O.C.” glamorizing everything. Life’s not that glamorous!! MTV sucks for doing this to The Inbetweeners.
Its a channel 4 show
Fucking MTV steals everything. When will the bastards think of something else to spoil
why must MTV RUIN all good british shows? I’m american and absolutely love the inbetweeners but its not gonna be nearly as funny as the real version…maybe if it was on hbo or showtime where they are at least allowed to swear.
though that r.j. berger show on mtv was semi-funny (though horribly cliched) so perhaps they won’t screw things up.
I’m american, can’t wait for the film, but I am not looking forward to MTV remaking the series. It wont be as funny, and it will strike comparisons just like The Office did.
However, most British comedies suck. This is probably the first I’ve actually liked.
Apparently you’ve never seen Shameless or Him and Her…both excellent serious Brit comedies.
This show is hilarious but I don’t see it translating well. Do you think they could really get away with the constant calling each other or a parent gay now? It worked bringing The Office to America but Inbetweeners America just isn’t likely to work.
“Inbetweeners” doesn’t refer to the social class it refers to being in between High School and Uni. AKA A Levels. Americans won’t understand this. Great, ruining another brilliant show for no reason.
