UPDATES NBC Cancels ‘Law & Order’ Flagship
NBC Picks Up ‘Law & Order: LA’ For Fall
NBC is expected to announce shortly that it has renewed Law & Order: SVU for another season and has officially given spinoff Law & Order: Los Angeles a straight-to-series order for next season. The network also is expected to confirm that flagship series Law & Order will end its run on the network after 20 seasons.
UPDATE: Here is NBC’s announcement:
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – May 14, 2010 – NBC has picked up the new drama “LOLA” (“Law & Order: Los Angeles”) as well as renewed “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” for the 2010-11 season. In addition, NBC will end its historic and record-tying “Law & Order” when the mothership series concludes its 20th season on Monday, May 24 (10-11 p.m. ET).
The announcements were made today by Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios.
Jeff Gaspin, Chairman, NBC Universal Television Entertainment said, ”The full measure of the collective contributions made by Dick Wolf and his ‘Law & Order’ franchise over the last two decades to the success of NBC and Universal Media Studios cannot be overstated. The legacy of his original ‘Law & Order’ series will continue to make an impact like no other series before.”
Bromstad added: “‘Law & Order’ has been one of the most successful franchises in the history of television, which is why it is so critical that we continue this important brand and our relationship with Dick Wolf and his team with ‘LOLA’ and ‘Law & Order: SVU.’”
The brainchild of creator and Emmy Award winner Wolf, “Law & Order” has spawned one of the most successful brands in primetime television. It is the 1997 Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Drama Series and the record holder for the most consecutive (11) nominations in that category for a primetime series (tied with “Cheers” and “M*A*S*H”). It premiered on September 13, 1990, and eventually tied “Gunsmoke” as the longest-running drama series in television history.
The new “LOLA” (“Law & Order: Los Angeles”) is a procedural crime drama that will follow the theme and storylines similar to the “Law & Order”-brand series on the streets of Los Angeles. The series, from executive producer Dick Wolf and Blake Masters (“Brotherhood”), is a Wolf Films production in association with Universal Media Studios. Casting and pre-production work are continuing.
“Law & Order: Criminal Intent” continues to air in its ninth season on USA Network.

Eh….
My mind: blown
“LOLA”? Really? We’re now naming a show after Kelly Ripa’s daughter?
Ridiculous. The Flagship L&O should have celebrated it’s 21st season this fall.
I honestly think this is a good decision.
I don’t know what their ratings are, but canceling L&O with one more season to go for the record just stinks. And, more creepy, skeevy and totally inappropriate storylines going forward on another season of SVU? Way to go, NBC…you continue with the brilliant decision-making.
I agree with the L&A comment but you can leave SVU out of it, I mean just because you’re pissed at them for L&A doesn’t mean you can try and take it out on SVU.
Stupid.
Canceling it would be a dumb move anyway. But canceling it…and putting out another spin-off at the same time? I really don’t get it. Money, higher budgets, blah blah blah…give it one more f-ing season, morons, instead of the revolutionary “new detective show set in L.A.”
I used to defend NBC.
No sendoff? No nothing? That’s it. Say whatever you want about its tiredness, that it was old, but there woulnd’t have been much of a difference to giving the show a record breaking 21 seasons.
What a bunch of tacky, disrespectful a$$h-les.
Sad.
No $ from advertisers. However, think positive..There always can be a sweeps special to say goodbye.
what about my favorite “Criminal Intent” with Vincent D?
Seconded!!
And why wouldn’t NBC want to hold the title of the network with a historically record-breaking TV Series???
Makes no sense to come 20 years and not go an extra step (with a show that people actually watch) or to give the show a proper send off…
WTF!!!
Crimnal Intent is on the USA network on mondays .. Vincent D left the series though..now its Jeff Goldblum
This is why NBC is such a crappy network.
“LO” had a great year this season, creatively. Hope it’s picked up elsewhere, if that’s possible.
” It is the 1997 Emmy Award winner for Outstanding Drama Series and the record holder for the most consecutive (11) nominations in that category for a primetime series (tied with “Cheers” and “M*A*S*H”).”
How were “Cheers” and “M*A*S*H” ever nominated in the “Outstanding Drama Series” category? Seems like someone over there should check their facts.
It’s NBC’s fault. It should read:
instead
LO what? As if. Never.
pathetic, the show is as good this season as it’s ever been. well, we’ll hopefully have syndication forever. I can’t understand how the LA show will work but i still look forward to it.
That’s too bad, i thought they were realy finding there stride again after a string of some realy shitty episodes. CI has always been a turnoff, SVU is losing Meloni and probably one one star, so that ship is starting to circle the bowl. All that’s going to be left is an unproven series.
Risky.

Whatever you think about the original L&O, it is super duper creepy that NBC is keeping the exploitation of sex crimes on the air with SVU. Conceptually, it’s comparable to making a TV series based on snuff films. It’s the worst of everything the entertainment industry has to offer, and NBC should be embarrassed to air such trash while letting the flagship series go.
The reason “L&O” is going despite its longevity is the same reason that “Gunsmoke” and “Murder She Wrote” were killed despite their ratings (and that “The Simpsons” and “South Park” have dodged): “L&O” appeals to viewers over 40, a demographic that is unattractive to advertisers. Perhaps this is why the show’s attitude seems to have veered slightly to the Left in past seasons, although that’s debatable; it’s because young viewers are more liberal. It’s also why the background casting (extras) are kept looking younger for the most part so viewers, God forbid, shouldn’t think that anyone in NYC is old. When the show is rerun on cable, where the viewership is even older than network, the problem is compounded. Who’da thunk that the name on the door of Death Panels would be Nielsen.
Pathetic! I hope you die NBC!
As soon as the sun sets, there’s gonna be hell to pay from Dick Wolf.
Grab all the garlic and holy water that you can now…
Very disrespectful to the cast & crew, not even giving them a proper send-off. But – that is Zucker doing his thing. Wish HBO would give the show a look, would be great to see harder version of L&O.
Kinda damned if U do – damned if U don’t here. NBC should go the one more season for the record, but how much does it cost vs. the ratings potential? And Wolf & Co. are already making PLENTY of $$$ in syndication. AND he gets a NEW show.
I’m not an NBC hater. I also don’t work for or against Wolf. But several things are obvious: the L&O mothership is by far the best series of the franchise, in terms of both writing and acting. NBC could easily lay off much of the cost of a renewal on TNT, USA or another cable network. And to send off the cornerstone of their schedule just short of the record is pretty shabby… My guess is this is a negotiating position to screw down Wolf’s deal on the LOLA spinoff. I would be shocked if they don’t grant a last minute reprieve, especially given the fact that the LOLA pilot hasn’t even been shot.
So sad.. Still one of the best WRITTEN shows on TV in this world of reality crap
One would think that Law&Order would’ve been moved to the USA Network to save it. And then have it canceled. But zucker in his ineptness with Leno show,Conan O’Brien actually accelerated the cancelation of the show by shifting around the show from one time slot to another.
