UPDATED: NBC this morning handed out three more series orders to comedy
Outsourced, dramedy Love Bites and drama The Event. All three have been early standouts and join recently ordered J.J. Abrams spy drama Undercovers. What all three newly picked up shows have in common is that they are all produced by NBC’s sister studio. Somewhat
surprisingly missing from the list, given how much heat it has been generating, is the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced procedural Chase, which comes from Warner Bros. TV. That pilot has already been making “if come” deals with writers. The set-in-India workplace comedy Outsourced had been making firm offers to writers for the past couple of days, and Cindy Chupack’s anthology dramedy Love Bites too had been recruiting writers and has several backup scripts in place. The pickup for The Event also boosts the chances for a final chapter of NBC’s veteran serialized drama Heroes, seen as a suitable companion/launching pad. And NBC is far from done with
its pickups. For instance, another hot comedy pilot, Perfect Couples, is yet to be screened today, along with the high-profile Rockford Files and other pilots, including Beach Lane. (UPDATE: Both did OK in screenings, as did The Cape) And NBC is still narrowing its choices for a new legal drama series (or two) among David E. Kelley’s Kindreds, Rex Is Not Your Lawyer and Garza all of which had solid screenings/testings. Rockford is said to be look good despite problems with the first cut, with Warner Bros.-produced Paul Reiser comedy Next also much buzzed about.
The series orders complete Cinderella stories for both The Event and Outsourced. Producer Steve Stark approached NBC drama execs with another spec toward the end of this buying season. He was told that the network’s development slate was full with one exception: They still were looking for event-type series. Stark immediately thought of another spec he had in his drawer from a couple of years ago titled The Event, written by Nick Wauters. The series, which looks to pick up where 24 left off, chronicles the unraveling of the greatest government cover-up in U.S. history. NBC first developed Outsourced, based on the 2006 movie, during the 2007-08 cycle but it didn’t go forward. This pilot season, the network approached Ken Kwapis, the driver behind Outsourced in its first incarnation, to direct another pilot for the network. Instead, he urged them to revisit Outsourced, which became a pilot written by Robert Borden.
“Each of these three series reflects a unique point of view and distinct style of quality that fits perfectly with NBC’s dedication to rebuilding the schedule,” NBC’s head of scripted programming Angela Bromstad said. “These series showcase excellent writing and casting, and represent the kind of scripted programming our network and studio are committed to producing.”

Remember when Flashforward was considered hot and it turned out to be the biggest mess of the season?
flash forward probably didn’t have a strong foundation have you ever gone to work for disney? its not pretty! so the down in morale translate to the down in creative outflow. a day that i went to work there, no one knew what had to be done-even though they been doing it for a while, rudeness on and on. the only nice person was the security guard at the gate.
many are saying how outsourced will be bad and expecting it to be bad. we don’t know. but sounds like its good. These are two different types of shows entirely so case by case analysis is needed. Flash Forward’s a sci-fi drama right?
also someone or a studio saying something is hot for the sake of it and a show actually being good and its touted as hot are two entirely different animals. will see which is which.
The Event sounds like it will be just as good as AMC’s Rubicon.
Is there anybody who have seen the pilots to Outsourced, Love Bites and The Event? How good were they?
I wish I had a chance to see pilot to outsourced. I would love to see it. Do you know where they are screening it? cast looks so adorable in the picture. I woudln’t mind looking at them for 1 hour so what’s 30 minute but pure bliss.
honestly, a comedy about outsourcing? talk about having the new economy rubbed in your face…you know, the new economy where we are all reduced to the living standards of Mexicans and Indians so some exec an book a massive bonus because of “improvements to productivity”
that title is like your rapist demanding you cook him dinner afterwards, for god’s sake did they have to use that title? maybe the thinking is that “with a name like Outsourced…”
Outsourced? Really?
Looks like Marie Antoinette has taken up residence at NBC. And we all know how that ended.
Sara Jane, Joe Diddly, who are you? You absolutely STINK of studio plants. You’re either exec producers on the show or NBC peons. I see the exact same shit on the Aint it Cool boards!
You’re all like, “Go see Halle Berry’s Catwoman! It’s awesome an’ shit!” That’s you!
Bwaaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!
Haaaahhhh ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha !!!!
LOSERS!!!
Will any of these shows run during the summer months when we are subjected to constant re-runs of all the fall/winter shows, boring. Have brand new shows for the summer for god’s sake, enough already. tv was much better when there were only two channels and less money, don’t remember seeing the same programmes over and over again throughout the year.
My wife and I were in one of the several test audiences for Outsourced. First let me say that we are both mid 30′s to mid 40′s demo, 2 kids, live in an apartment in the Northeast. I almost lost my job several years ago when my company tanked and the downsized. I was working in one of the larger call centers we had. The first thing the did to cut costs was to shut down the call centers and contract the work out. In this case it was sent to Florida to a large call center there that did the same job for several large companies.
Since then I have maintained my job, but have been moved around several times to several different positions within the company. My wife lost her job about a year ago and has been unemployed since. We are both political conservatives. I would say in a lot of respects we are fairly typical Americans.
So, back to Outsourced. We were in Las Vegas at a test screening for NBC (Outsourced). We say it, and we LOVED it. It was funny, and smart. It reminded both of us of Arrested Development meets Slumdog Millionaire.
For the last few years I have given NBC a wide pass. Except for Heroes I can’t think of much I watched over there. I will tell you now that Outsourced is appointment television for me and my family. We liked the pilot so much we went and rented the original movie and loved that as well. SO for those saying Outsourced is going to bomb, your very, very wrong.
And you are entitled to your opinion. However, what works as a movie or a episode of a TV series doesn’t translate into a successful spinoff of its own series. The TV series is based on a movie of the same name that only made $200,000 plus at the box office. I don’t think America, at Large, will stand for a series like this. All it says is that “I Jeff Zucker am going to use the failure of this show, and next season, to pin on the back of Comcast’s Brian Burke and take his job.
Comparing Outsourced to Arrested Development basically is like saying it is going to bomb.
Sorry – no matter how good it is, it looks like a bad idea.
The reason why FlashForward sucked is that both of the show’s creaters, Brannon Braga and David S. Goyer, bolted for other projects; and two of the other executives are in the process of divorcing each other, which has also screwed things up.
Let’s see here; don’t trust your government, don’t trust corporations and peoples of the world are more deserving of jobs, and love is an illusion. Sounds like ratings winners for the basement dwelling anarchy crowd when the WTO is not meeting.
Outsourced is just a rip off of a UK tv show called “Mumbai Calling”. Nothing new here.
For all of you wanting to boycott the show, it’s just entertainment and not a social discourse on the state of the USA.
Why would you be offended about a call centre in India, considering this is the current reality whether you like it or not.
My anger and frustration from years of calling various help desks in India will keep me from enjoying Outsourced. I’m old enough to know what it’s like to call a help desk, explain the problem once and actually get some help. Now, calling the help desk means repeating the problem a few times, asking them to repeat their answer a few times, realizing their script doesn’t cover my particular problem and they have no actual knowledge of the product so they can’t even guess what might work. Most help desks do little more than answer the phone and tell you tough luck. Of course it’s not their fault, but I find nothing funny about the loss of jobs and the poor support that results.
In the worst economy in almost a century, NBC comes across a brilliant idea — mock the millions of American workers who lost their jobs to low-wage scabs from India!
Let NBC know that displacing American workers is not funny, and has contributed to the destruction of our economy. Millions of Americans are unemployed, many after being forced to train their foreign replacements in the Indian outsourcing industry.

I hope the new series ‘Outsourced’ succeeds. I cannot wait to laugh my butt off watching this new show. I also hope NBC develops new comedies about 9/11, the Holocaust and slavery.
Other people’s misery is sooooo funny. Right NBC?
I really don’t care what the inspiration for this piece of crap show was; ain’t nothing funny about people losing their jobs due to outsourcing, especially during a recession.
WOW! Outsourced was TERRIBLE NBC! What were you thinking? The cast is a hodgepodge of random people, with a premise that doesn’t quite follow (on top of which it is offensive in a lot of ways, including racially), so overall: NOT FUNNY. Are you trying to get Indian Americans and Indians discriminated against at their jobs and when they live/visit the United States? Extremely offensive comments in the show, including religious! Also, if you really want to shoot something in India– then do it in India to make it actually believable and maybe you will get some sort of sympathy.
Ok, you have shown us the pilot and we all know it was not funny and it will not be funny. So, now seriously, please cancel this show.
I don’t like the show Outsourced. The show is specifically about American jobs being, well, “outsourced” to India. That is a sad topic not a humorous topic. When I first saw the show I thought about the Dad who lost his job to outsourcing and sits down with this family and this show comes on and how bad it must make him feel. I know people who have lost jobs to outsourcing and this show must make them feel absolutely horrible. I think it is sad when anyone loses the security of a job. And I don’t see any humor in that.
Outsourced Rocks Keep It Up Guys….Love You NBC….
