BREAKING NEWS! KEEP REFRESHING! 3:30 PM UPDATE!
Here's the latest news on this fast-moving story. A deal was in place if NBC picked up the Law & Order flagship for a 21st season consisting of 16 episodes. But insiders say Dick Wolf is now accusing the network of going back (some use the word "reneging") on that arrangement made in March: "He's so fucking angry, you have no idea."
As recently as the start of this week, even NBCU chief Jeff Zucker was privately telling people that L&O would get one more season. That's certainly what Wolf and his longtime reps (UTA and Ziffren Brittenham legal eagle Cliff Gilbert) were led to believe from NBC suits Marc Graboff and Jeff Gaspin. That is, until last night.
Wolf simply wanted NBC to live up to the deal that both sides had agreed to back in March. According to that arrangement already in place, NBC/Universal Media Studios was supposed to go to TNT and negotiate a new deal (the old one was up) whereby the cable channel would finance some original episodes of Law & Order in order to continue getting runs of the show. "And, for whatever reason, NBC was unwilling to engage in a serious way with TNT. They didn't do it. At the last minute, they said, 'We'll pick the show up and this is how we're going to do it'. Which was ludicrous." That's when NBC threw its agreement with Wolf out the window and demanded Wolf kick in to help "finance the pickup of Law & Order out of all the money he's made. And his reps said, 'Never going to happen'," according to an insider. Another source explained the situation: "Graboff broke off the negotiations last night when they fell apart based on Team Dick's unwillingness to make certain deal concessions deemed unreasonable."
But that's not all. According to NBC insiders, immediately, Team Dick contacted Gaspin. And that email exchange revealed that Gaspin didn't realize the show had been cancelled. Network sources say there was a lack of communication between Graboff and Gaspin, who didn't know the negotiations had broken off. But then Gaspin confirmed it. This morning and afternoon, the producers began calling reps for the show's stars and telling them about the cancellation.
Now Wolf wants to try to make a deal to take the Law & Order flagship to TNT, the same place that John Wells and Warner Bros took Southland after it, too, was cancelled by NBC. In that case, NBC tried to hold up the switch. And that could happen this time as well, or even something much more complicated since Law & Order is a UMS show.
NBC so far has not issued any public statement confirming the cancellation. It is possible, just possible, that this could be a game of chicken -- and NBC come back to Wolf's reps honoring the deal made in March. Don't be surprised if talks start up again.
Wolf, after all still has L&O: SVU, L&O: Criminal Intent, and now the newest spinoff, L&O: Los Angeles on NBC. I hear the next test of wills may come immediately because Wolf wants LOLA (the new show's nickname) to be given the Wednesday 10 PM time slot right after L&O: SVU. There may be more to report today, so stay tuned.
EXCLUSIVE 2 PM: This one is a shocker. Veteran crime drama Law & Order will not get its shot at history after all. I hear that after long deliberations, NBC has decided to cancel the long-running procedural, which will end its run at 20 seasons, tied with Gunsmoke. This is very surprising as NBC brass had indicated lately that they would bring L&O for a record-breaking 21st season. But with strong development, especially on the drama side, and soft ratings for L&O, NBC apparently opted not to keep the aging series, which spawned several successful spinoffs. The latest, Law & Order: Los Angeles, will launch next season. L&O's renewal by NBC was also contingent on securing a sizable commitment from the series' cable home TNT whose off-network deal for the show was up at the end of this season.

it’s okay because there are seven other law & orders
There is nothing like the original, particularly with Sam Waterston still playing a key role. It would be nice to see his role as D.A. written into one of the other franchises.
There is no one who could ever replace sam waterson.
Amen. Jack McCoy was such an interesting mix of the idealistic and the cynic, rogue and pragmatic. Cutter was a pleasant enough diversion but no one could ever replace McCoy just like no one could ever replace Goren on L&O CI. the reason the ratings went to the dogs is that the network kept promising new episodes and kept running reruns.
I agree with the viewer that stated no one can replace Sam Waterson. Hopefully, new Law and Order episodes will be shown on TNT. I still enjoy the original L&O.
Sam Waterston is the only reason that (Equalizing to S. Epatha Merkson) that L&O stood to own any true credibility for a truly powerful program. These two performers are incredibly gifted in their craft and reliably strong actors of their time in television history. Both are dedicated to their role and always added their individual flavor of authenticity. and of course I have not forgotten the third top gun , the late Jerry Orbach. I truly believe that these top three actors have made L&O the epitome of what it means to be a professional in the art and an inspiration to the other co-stars to make L&O what it is today.
It stands to reason why the show has been on for so long. They were the ice breakers of the early 1990s against the odds in the improvement of risky and serious crime drama. Wolf owes his success to these very fine artists. Without these three, L&O may have never developed into the franchises that have come from this original series.
There will never be another quite like it for a long time. At least until that phantom Nielsen group returns to a semblance of reason to stop supporting this reality vomitus erupting as neverending e.coli.
I mean “The Biggest Loser” and “Win it in a Minute”? Is this a campaign to keep America stupid? Why are we being insulted in this way? PUHLEESSSSEE!!!
AMEN and DITTO to all of the above re. L&O. I also strongly
believe that the show’s prolonged durability, expertly presenting stimluating ethical debates of our times in an entertaining, engaging fashion is also due in very large part to the WRITERS. I once read, (some years ago, and I’m sorry I can’t recall the source) that the majority of the writers that have stayed with this top-notch show the longest are all over the ages of 50. Now, there certainly is NO age requirement for excellence in any field of endeavor; however, what I call “life experience”, actually living through the joys, complexities, failures and triumphs and adversities that human beings experience and actually thoughtfully wrestling with the very grey, difficult public, political and personal dilemmas of our lives is what makes us just plain more interesting. I think the “L&O” stories, presented in all of their complexities, within the context of the laws of our nation, by superb actors & actresses are what kept me coming back to the show week after week after week from the beginning. Sorry for all of the run-on sentences, folks.
And (yeah, bad grammar) I still miss the very fine Jerry Orbach.
Broadway, television & film are just a tad poorer for his absence. And what happened with Vincent D’Onofrio and thereby,
Kathryn Erbe? As strong as her acting was alongside Mr. D’Onofrio,
he was the cornerstone of “L&O:CI”.
Somebody, please pick up this show as it is and do right by it!!
Except for perpetualy struggling PBS/NPR, sorta, kinda free network programming is turning into a cultural desert: Buzz Aldrin – Apollo 11 Lunar “Golf Cart” pilot, and a true-red-white-and-blue hero (and you don’t have to be a Republican to use those words) on “Dancing with the (so-called)sic Stars”????? God help us.
Thanks and good luck to us all. Long live “L&O”!
I can’t believe I found SOMEONE who is sick to death of the “reality” puke! And you stated it so well. When we lost Jerry O, we lost a great character!
I also feel Sam Waterson is irreplaceable. I would love for them to write him into one of the other LO shows. I have already stopped watching Law & Order Criminal Intent because of the changes on that show.
Another smart move from NBC braintrust! L&O is almost the only regular series they EVER have in the top 25 nielsen ratings. With the exception of Dateline and Monday Night Football they never place a lot of weeks above 30 with five shows or more. They should be paying Mr. Wolf whatever he wanted!!
Don’t worry, I’m planning to fill L&O’s time slot with a special hour of Jay Leno.
As we all know, ladies and gentlemen, “NBC” stands for… NEVER BELIEVE your CONTRACT!
Thanks Jeff Sucker
It’s amazing the devastation The Jay Leno had on other shows, and I wish more people acknowledged it. Dick Wolf should send Leno a dozen black roses, or a horse’s head…
Bad NBC programming decisions ran L&O into the ditch! L&O was NEVER an 8pm show for any night. These were the same boneheads who moved Leno to 10pm! Put L&O on Fridays at 10pm, it’ll kill the competition and make more than enough money to pay for its production.
Declan, was your comment typed in 1994? L&O has horrible ratings this season, even by NBC standards. While you’re correct that NBC doesn’t often get any shows in the top 25, you’d have to go to about the top 75 to find L&O for the past couple of seasons. Dateline also never scores very high in the ratings, and Monday Night Football is on ESPN.
First off, NBC does not air Sunday Night Football. Secondly, you must be thinking of Law & Order SVU that is in the top 20 or 30 shows. The regular Law & Order doesn’t do that great of ratings. Get a clue of what you are talking about before you speak.
NBC does indeed air Sunday Night Football.
Apparently, you should take your own advice about checking before you speak. That is what as known as “irony”.
We do not believe any of this was right…and from the beginning, it did seem off. When the cast is talking about the next season, only to have it yanked only days later…not right.
I am asking EVERY L&O fan to come join our email campaign on FB…
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Keep-Law-and-Order-on-the-air/127638127246424?filter=1
To everyone who is angered by the cancellation of Law and Order, show your support for Law and Order by telling Dick Wolf to take every Law and Order series out of NBC, and boycott the remaining NBC shows.
This is the DUMBEST idea EVER! Why would I give up on the shows I like just for one show? It has had it’s run, it’s done now.
He clearly said “To everyone who is angered by the cancellation of Law and Order”.
You are clearly not “one who is angered by the cancellation of Law and Order.”
That will show them Chris! Those boycots always work out great for you guys. They really go a long way!
(sarcasm)
Laugh it up, but both Firefly and Farscape fans (which I am both) got a movie and a miniseries (respectively) after bitching non-stop about their cancellations.
And L&O has a much wider viewerbase than either of those cult shows.
I weep for the premature cancellation of Firefly… such a great show.
Hey dont forget all those star trek fans in the late 60’s
I have already emailed TNT asking them to take over the original Law and Order show. I hope lots of people email them with that request. I don’t know why SVU would rate so high, I am honestly bored with that show and very tired of Meloni’s character’s yelling, punching, and throwing his little fits of anger, get over it Stabler, very boring. My favorite L & O was CI, but since NBC screwed Vincent D’Onofrio I do not watch that one any more. I hope that TNT chooses pick up the original Law and Order. NBC in my opinion, is the worst channel on tv. They do lots of underhanded and shady things.
No way! I am addicted to L&A for the last 10 yrs of viewing pleasure. Must be renewed!!!
Law & Arder?
No, “Lore & Arder”
They must be from New England, that’s how a lot of the natives there say it!!
I agree–NBC should reconsider. It’s always been a great show and why would you not want to be part of history with a 21st season????
I agree a 21st season would be fantastic. Law and Order is one of my favorite shows. The cancellation is a mistake.I wish NBC would move Law and Order Criminal Intent back to NBC with the original characters. The Law and Order shows are much better than all the reality or show opera shows. If they cancel Law and Order, I will only have two T.V. shows left on NBC that I watch regularly.
Renew the darn thing NBC!! The show has done amazing things for your network all these years. It deserves the record!!!
I agree…please renew for at least one more season
I agree. I have watched every episode of L&O since the beginning. How can NBC consider dropping the show and keeping several others I won’t name. Put it back on Wednesday night for at lease another year. The writing is great and so are the the two new detectives!
I just wanted to see it break the record. I mean, isn’t that worth it to NBC at all? Free publicity, still classy show, still well-done, etc. One more year. But enough of this Wolf character. No one feels badly for you Sir rolling around in your gazillions of dollars, but I suppose you have a billion hacks to pay percentages to. No one is denying a great producer but each year it seems we hear of Wolf pulling some kind of tantrum or being “angry,” it’s so boring – enough. If NBC went back on the deal, nothing new, but still lame. Again, perhaps dumb, but wanted to see the record broken. We won’t be seeing that record again on a scripted series I don’t think in anyone demo-aged person’s lifetime – atleast not on broadcast television or even television for that matter the way things are going.
AMEN!
How infuriating! surely they will come to their senses! totally weird and silly stuff… It just goes to show how cut off bosses really get..even just for the fun of it, they should let it run for the record…it is infinitely superior to the current record holder..maybe they want the old stuff to have some cachet it wouldnt otherwise have..maybe its about residuals…but it is much more likely to just be about dopey bossy idiocy
This is insane! Renew one of the best show on television
I agree. I think it would be great to break the record currently held with Gunsmoke but even more so Law and Order is a quality show PERIOD. After the Jay Leno fiasco one would think that NBC would refrain from making any changes that would create a great deal of controversy. This decision certainly has created a maelstrom that will not enhance NBC’s reputation. Is there any possible way this decision can be reversed? Can we persuade the the powers that be to keep Law and Order? I hope so.
Glad to see this left-wing drivel canned at last.
I am a republican but I cannot DISAGREE with you more. Law & Order is the best show on television ever . 20 years to prove it . Should not have been canceled , but any show with Anthony Anderson is cursed, Even though he is a fine actor & comedian every show he’s on get’s canceled.
No, they can’t cancel Law & Order!! It is the most intelligent show on, so well written and acted. There is so much trash on. Law and Order is an example of how good television can be.
Another AMEN about the garbage on cable today. We’re all better off going to the “You Tube” site to watch the reruns of the better programing there was was long before commercials began to infiltrate our viewing enjoyment. Cable is at best re-directing me to build up my own DVD collection and begin enjoying my library again. Shesh!
Seems every time i really love a show, series, or anything it dissapears. My whole family watches this show every night, including my 24 year old autistic daughter. She loves it. I think they should reconsider & keep it on.
Even if Law and Order’s NBC ratings aren’t that great, it still is a cash cow for NBC/Universal due to the constant TNT retuns.
It makes no damn sense to cancel the show one season away from beating Gunsmoke, no matter how bad the NBC ratings are.
Hopefully, most of NBC’s new dramas will fail (the GOOD) ones usually do (Life, Raines, Journeyman) and NBC will be forced to pick up the show as a mid season replacement.
PS. I’m 35 and autistic too. Look me up on facebook
In my opinion, this is by far one of the most stupid things NBC has done to date!!
Please don’t cancel Law and Order. It is my and my friends favorite of all of the shows and spin offs they have done. Please keep the Law and Order. It is the best of all of them. It has more variety than SVU. Their shows are always so dark and depressing.
I agree about SVU (not so much on the darkness end of it) but the self-righteous and propagandizing screenwriting. And I like Sharon Stone, but on SVU? As a detective? WTF?
Also, L&O in LA…again WTF? L&O is ABOUT NEW YORK themes and the richness of culture and atmosphere. How in the hades is that going to fly in LA? Oh, with more stereotypical themes about how awful the minorities and the poor people are? Are we now to feel sorry for Dick Wolf’s new set of friends where crime afflicts them and how bad we should all feel about it? Forgetaboutit!
I would totally take Law and Order to TNT. I never watch NBC. I have always seen Law and Order on Direct TV on TNT.
Good riddance to “Law and Order”. Twenty years of that formulaic drivel is enough. I can only imagine that the reason it lasted 20 years is because NBC has been in the ratings basement for the last 5 years or so. Agenda-driven television!
I am so happy Law and Order is on the chopping block. I’m sick to death listening to the liberal social commentary that’s spewed each week. There’s a reason why it has “soft ratings”! People are sick to death of Hollywood preaching to them. Good decision!!!!!!!!!!!
Anon, are you serious? L&O has lately been preaching the very opposite t any libral social commentary issues. I loved this show for the longest time after 1992. However, the material after 9/11 has become more on the anti-liberal social end of it and they did not preach as much if at all (and if I wanted that, I’ll watch the Fox channel) about political issues BEFORE 9/11 , now, that is when I began getting tired of the show. The TNT reruns pre-9/11 are very well-written. Now if you want the OPPOSITE of what you are speaking of, just go to the E! channel and watch the Kardashians, that bogus insulting Chelsea idiot and the other road-side reality mess and you’ll be fit and fiddle as a lark. Not me.
I LOVE THIS SHOW AND YOU WOULD BE LOSING MY VIEWING IF YOU CANCEL THIS. I HAVE WATCHED THIS SHOW SINCE THE BEGINNING WITH GEORGE DZUNDZA AND CHRIS NOTH! THE ORIGINAL DETECTIVES. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN NBC. IT SHOULD, FOR ONCE BE ABOUT THE AUDIENCE INSTEAD OF THE FREAKIN DOLLAR!!!!!
PISSED OFF MOM IN FLORIDA!
NBC is consistently dropping the ball
Cancelling Law and Order, Mercy and the debacle of Jay Leno vs
late night and the shafting of Conan OBrien….
What do they think they are running? NBC loses money & marketshare hand over fist. Consumer loyalty is more important now than ever before in this media.
NBC is getting the reputation of a network you cannot trust either as a sponsor, viewer or feature writer/production company. ..The sponsors will head to viral, its cheaper, faster, and more profitable. It also has a great deal more timely appeal.
Mercy and L&O head to HULU and get away from the networks…Their time is over…
do what u have to do to keep program on tv
It really stinks! Someone get with it an order new episodes. What will TV be like without L&O? We need the 21st year.
Hello A&E; TNT; and the ever bunch of screwups NBC.
I am furious that NBC cancelled Law and Order. What are we going to do between 9 – 11 pm? First, NBC tried to mess us up by moving Jay Leno to 10 pm and we made them eat their words and put him back. The same people who love Jay are also Law and Order addicts. There is nothing sane on TV with all of these crazy reality shows. Law is Order is for intelligent people and NBC has proven once again that they don’t get it.
PUT LAW AND ORDER BACK ON–ALL OF THEM!
Stephanie M.
I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news of the cancellation. I’ve been a fan for the whole 20 years. I hope it continues on TNT, since NBC are making the stupid mistake of taking it off the air. Mr. Wolf you are doing a great job. Please continue with the original Law and Order.
The very dumbest thing you did was to cancel Law and Order…….
Cannot stand the new one or the actors-stinks!
No! They can’t cancel it! I’ve been addicted to it for years! Interesting that I’ve often heard other people refer to their addiction to L and O. It’s a great show with a solid premise. I’ll bet that TNT picks it up.
Didn’t see that coming.
Of course like a lot of people I didn’t see Law & Order for about 5-6 years either.
I used to be a big L&O fan, but the show got so damn predictable, I had to give it up. But I always thought NBC would keep it going just for the sake of keeping it going.
NO!!
Wow!! I’m almost embarrassed to say I’ve watched the mothership for almost all its seasons it was on, and was hoping it would break the record. It had a great run. Don’t know if we’ll see that again on prime time.
AND we never will either. Nothing any more is about creativity where writing is concerned anymore. What happen to the true-story mini-series any way?
L&O was too dangerously intelligent for us because it would actually makes us think. With that, it seems in the last 15 years that any of the best will no longer be introduced to so many of us. It seems that for the financial obsession of NBC, ABC, AND CBS —that it is cheaper to film reality shows about anyone that they can film to argue and tear into each other and on top of that, there is nothing but watching commercials every damned 5 minutes any way. It was coming to this, but I never thought that it would happen so soon to all of the networks.
I agree, we need some more reality crap that Is so stupid, but cheap to put on the air….. So dumb!Who with any Intelligence watches It?
You are catering to Ignorance……
Too bad. This version is so much better than SVU, especially this year with Sharon Stone.
Rest in Peace, Lenny.
Jerry Orbach (R.I.P.) was terrific as Lennie Briscoe (and many other roles over his lifetime). That said, for me, Richard Belzer as Detective Munch and Ice-T as Detective Fin are just as solid in their respective roles on SVU.
I agree
Couldn’t agree more. SVU is sensational drivel with a lead actress that can’t muster up any facial expression other than the slack-jawed one that looks like she just smelled a fart. I thought perhaps the franchise was on the right path by finally dumping VDO from Criminal Intent. The team on L&O now is a good one. The loss of S.Epatha Merkerson on L&O is a big one, but not one that couldn’t be fixed with the right cast member. SVU is the one that needs the axe.
I completely didn’t see that coming, only because the pres said it would be back.
Then again, they ALSO said Conan was going to host The Tonight Show – and we all know how quickly they took THAT back.
I had a feeling this was going happen. But like all of you I loved law&order too. U know it debuted one year after NBC canceled Mimai Vice in ‘89. But Law&Order Los Angeles should be interesting.
Well I hope Dick Wolfe gives this show a long deserving finale to wrap things up. This last group of actors, the DA politics I enjoyed.
It’ll be interesting to see how long they give the Los Angeles version to take off. The “Trial by Jury” incarnation was enjoyable, but NBC didn’t give it a chance to find an audience.
I suppose that’s standard network operating procedure: If a show doesn’t take off immediately, they dump it. Remember “Justice” on Fox a few years ago? That show was fantastic, but if you blinked you probably missed it because they didn’t give it a chance. It was gone in one season.
Oh no…..
this is sad. This season (and the last couple, frankly) have been fantastic. How sad. I can’t believe it.
And stupid, overwraught SVU is on the air….
It’s always easier to keep a proven, formatted show going than it is to start a new one, even if its ratings are so-so, because the long-term revenue stream is immense. Maybe Dick Wolf wanted too rich a deal, richer than he is probably already getting. It’s sad to lose a New York show.
I gave up Law & Order a long, long time ago. It used to be my favorite show, but it just became so preachy and formulaic that I finally had to move on.
Yes. Used to be ‘ripped from the headlines’ – then when the headliners were not politically correct any more dating from back to the Puerto Rican parade situation and the Clinton impeachment the plots contorted themselves to try to cast the headline story with Hollywood approved villains and PC victims. Finally they gave that up too and there were no more ‘headline’ shows just bits and pieces of sensational stories stuck together in implausible plots. A lot of the substance left when Michael Moriarty left and a lot more left with Steven Hill and Jerry Orbach and now its an all too familiar formula without any substance.
Is there any reason why they don’t show the Michael Moriarity shows on re-runs? He was fantastic.
Do they think the shows are to old or something?
If don’t mind getting up at 4:00am you can see the residuals on TNT featuring Michael Moriarity,George Dzunda and Chris Noth.
Dick Wolf must be spinning in his coffin.
He’s not dead.
He may be now. . .
Who said anything about being dead?
I said so.
Wow, I hope this isn’t true. Granted the show has been limping along for a while, but it still has solid and interesting plot lines. If NBC decides to pass on it, maybe it can find another life on cable. Most network TV shows these days aren’t nearly as interesting as what you can find on cable anyway.
It’s crap. They can keep L&O:LA and shove it where the sun don’t shine. BS. BS. BS. BS. BS.
And NBC wonders why is sucks- it’s because they announce what their business model is with the aptly named “Biggest Loser.”
I’m done.
I’m sitting shiva. And once again, in its handling of this major decision, NBC shows no respect for its staff/shows/etc.
Interesting. Other sites are reporting cancellation talk premature and negotiations ongoing. Curious to see how it all shakes out.
I am glad I watch Law and Order this season after long break from not watching it’s unwatchable I haven’t seen great Law and Order episode since death of Jerry Orbach it shadow of former self
Jerry was the absolute best! I sure do miss “Lennie” and awfully glad for re-runs on TNT!
Oh hell NO! F*** NBC!
Futon Critic is reporting that negotiations are still ongoing. Obviously someone’s source is wrong.
Do these people have any brains at all? NO. Continually the best crime drama on TV. When NBC juggles things nothing good happens.
Did Zucker sign off on this or did he bring it up…probably.
You are so right! Thank god that idiot Zucker wasn’t in charge of NBC in the 80’s and 90’s or we wouldn’t have had such classics as Cheers, Seinfeld or Friends.
There is nothing on his watch that screams Must Watch TV.
Sorry, hated Friends and Seinfeld (That is, until their asses ended up arrested in the final episode—good riddance)! Cheers was so-so.
I watch three L & O reruns every day, plus the first runs once a week.
Vincent D’Onofrio is my favourite by far. L & O was always a good no nonsense show. I don’t like SVU’s constant dabbling in the main characters’ psychological make-up to run plotlines.
I’m going to write three different “L&O” stories, publish ‘em all and I’m gonna “TOLDJA!” all on Sunday.
It is over for me and NBC if this is true and they cancel Law & Order. The whole debacle with Conan has shown that TPTB will run this network into the ground. I don’t care if this fall NBC has the next “Friends” on–I won’t be watching ever again.
Finally.
It is surprising but it has been 20 years. Enough is enough.
So much for NBC’s development coming back from the grave and acquiring a brain. We forgot to note that the brain they are using was from the jar marked ‘Abby Normal’.
file my addiction or appreciation or whatever … under “All good things pass especially when NBC stands for FUBAR ”
I doubt that would fit on my Pendaflex file so will shorten it to just “NBC = FUBAR”
“So much for NBC’s development coming back from the grave and acquiring a brain. We forgot to note that the brain they are using was from the jar marked ‘Abby Normal’.”
at least i had a big guffaw over Deborahh’s comment … thank you … amidst my tears.
Robb, who is will always be an avid L&O fan … SVU is a totally different animal and CI is not the same without Vince. Or as my Swedish friend sez “von’t vatch it vithout WINCENT” ! And that goes for me and NBC … won’t watch NBC without my Law and Arder. It was the only show on NBC TO watch !
NBC = THE BIGGEST LOSER !
Isn’t the likely outcome that they will strike a deal for 13 final episodes to air in the fall and 13 of LOLA to air in the spring?
Rob … this might be giving NBC too much credit as it would seem the appropriate thing to do … segue from one show to another.
But I would HOPE NBC gives L & O a proper send off.
I think the only living person who is happy L and O might be cancelled is James Arness as now his beloved Gunsmoke which ran from 1955 to 1975 will still be at least tied for the record for longest running drama on TV.
(I take great joy knowing that somewhere down the River Of No Return there is no TV to get my shorts knotted up about … !)
I expected NBC would give the original “Law And Order” one final season (perhaps 13 to 17 episodes, airing January to May of 2011).
Besides, didn’t an NBC executive recently get quoted as saying she “didn’t want to be the one to cancel ‘Law And Order’”??
This is awful and stupid. It’s the only show I watch with any sort of regularity, plus any of the L&O re-runs that are on. And besides 30 Rock, it’s the only NBC show worth watching.
The sky was so blue this morning…
Jeff Zucker promised Law and Order the 11:30 slot…
-RnsW
Good. Loved the original show, but it was brought down by the stupid liberal sermonizing by the show’s writers. I’m glad people were turning away from that embarrassment.
Again!!! What Liberal Agenda are the two of you speaking about???? It was COMPLETELY the OPPOSITE of such discussion and as I suggested to the other one who mimicked the SAME line as you, that E! channel will always be around as so many other screwed up writing will be for the duration. Hello, when was the last time that any of the shows spoke up for anything liberal OR PC. Every thing now is about F*** Minorities and kill the immigrants and for you, this should be SUNSHINE and orange juice for your day already.
Greedy people, wanting this show to stay on even longer. It’s already had twenty years, isn’t that more than enough to satisfy you? It’s a pale shadow of its former self and should have died years ago.
you’re killing my best friends.
how can you do that to me!
NBC had better not use ratings as an excuse for this bone-headed move: they messed with the schedule so much this year, I bet most people don’t know when it’s on. No episodes for ages, then two next week. Way to sabotage your best-loved franchise, geniuses.
Over the past five seasons the show has been in four different regular timeslots.
What are they going to put on Friday nights? At least keep it there for this season for 13 episodes.
NBC has a habit of doing insane things like that – moving shows around and around and around. It doesn’t help ANYONE. And then the shows get canceled. DAMNIT.
That is too bad. L&O is the best show NBC has going. Except for the evening news, I am a CBS fan.
Me too. CBS and ABC for Reality and NBC for news and Drama. Interested in seeing how they do LOLA.
I’m not a huge fan of L&O but it’s an incredibly well-done piece of entertainment for what it is and I do watch occasionally. I feel like it is a part of NBC’s legacy and, quality of their new pilots be damned, it should come back for a Final Season, even if it were just 13 episodes, to honor the significance it has had to NBC over the years. Their loss if it doesn’t happen.
Yikes, I missed the boat.. I must be the only NY actor not to have been on L&O (just re-joined the biz this year)! LOL
No you’re not. I tried for 5 yrs. and never made it.
Dear AmBadActress
Then you should quit acting.
The powers that be at NBC sure know how to screw things up…..Jay Leno at 10????? Never cared for him at 11:30 so why watch at 10? Thereby screwing up everything else – all the dramas got messed up or cancelled and if you didn’t watch at 10, why go there for Conan….wow were they trying to screw all the shows???????
NBC, please please don’t cancel Law & Order. I don’t know what I would do without my weekly dose of Jack McCoy. If you MUST cancel it, can you please bring Sam Waterson to Law & Order: Los Angeles or onto SVU?
Too sad. This latest incarnation, with Linus, Alana, Jeremy and Anthony, was the best in a long time. You’re not often wrong, Nikki, but here’s hoping you are on this one.
NO no no, Maybe Linus and Alana but not Lupo and Anderson. This may be the reason why L&O has taken its final bow. The Assistant DA role is the chunkiest part for any actor and as for Sam Waterston, he;s only on for five minutes a week now at best. It was an altogether different show when he was the Assistant DA and now, we’re lucky if he comes in to speak to Linus and Alana. It has had its run already and a damned great one too. Now it would be entirely ridiculous for Jack McCoy to end up in LA (as NY is as competitive as a state for a DA as it is) and I do not think that it would be entirely plausible for Jack McCoy’s character to end up there any way. As I wrote earlier, the L&O premise was fitting and is the basis of the New York system of policing and the theme fits perfectly in that state. Now in LA (where there IS no true L&O anyway would be too much to swallow as there is truly too much corruption there any way . At least, it was believable in NY—LA, it would be a running gag! Seriously.
Hopefully this story jumped the gun. Sure, failing ratings and all that, but giving it one more season? And being able to advertise the whole time that it’s the final season? I figured it deserved some dignity after twenty years.
I would say NBC might be trying to reinvent itself…if it wasn’t also coming out with L&O:LA. What a terrible idea.
I agree…..shows always tell you it is the final season!! This is such BS, I dont know what they have been doing at NBC lately but…..
I can’t understand why the ratings are doing what they do, but Law & Order is a great drama. SVU and Criminal Intent are also great shows. But to many Americans want to watch stupid TV, and Law & Order requires you to have both brain hemispheres to appreciate. This country isn’t that smart anymore, and tragic losses in great entertainment like Law & Order just prove that even NBC could care less about quality and are just following the herd of stupid TV coming out of CBS, ABC, FOX, E!, MTV and the rest. Sad time. Sad Time.
For people sick of reality tv……this show is awesome!!!! I can watch all the L&O’s over and over again. Great shows !!!!
Thank you for finally getting it! Most of the people who are posting in this thread are just blaming NBC. Unforunately, people would much rather watch crappy reality shows and other crap than good quality TV.
These tv networks are companies that are trying to make money. It’s not a good business decision to renew a show that isn’t making any money for you in return. Get a clue!
And for the record, Dick Wolf will still have 3 L&O shows on NBCU properties, so he needs to stop complaining or agree to the license fee cut.
It’s not a total goodbye, I imagine. There are still a handful of other Law & Orders in the US, not to mention Law & Order: UK, Закон и порядок: отдел оперативных расследований (Russian SVU), Закон и порядок: Преступный умысел (Criminal Intent) and Paris enquêtes criminelles, all of which feel exactly like the original (and sometimes have the same stories, if you read the credits).
all the actors contracts were up anyway….that was the mistake they made last year. They told the actors no raises take it or leave it and in exchange they would shorten their contracts to end at the end of last season.
OK, great show that makes you use your brain, not a overloaded with angst/drama to tell a story. Nice blend of a believable age group that protrays a “real” work force. It had a good time slot then NBC screws the pooch, Friday night, Sunday night now Monday night..Put it BACK on Wednesday night! Take your S.V.U and put it on the bouncing schedule instead of sliding it into the Mothership’s original time & day.
The people that work that show truly are a family. Hopefully they end up on TNT, or even HBO perhaps.
I’m very hurt by this because I watch all the Law & Orders. I order DVR just so I can watch them when I get home.
They had to cancel the series–they’ve arrested all of the conservative, Christian Republicans in New York City.
DEVASTATED.
And what it be replaced with…more Biggest Looser!
DONT do this. Its the onle deceint thing on TV here in Australia.
Sounds like another ITV and cancelling The Bill.
These idiot TV Management just dont like to see a successful show keep going.
We have shows here in Oz that have gione for 25 years,so what up these peoples nose.
Good on Dick Wolf in going to another network.
NBC are like ITV…..
Leave the show alone.as the saying goes if its working then dont ’stuff it up’
bugger your ratings, and your bottom line think of the viewers ans people around the world
I agree!!! (From Perth here!) but channel 10 hasn’t even finished the season before the 20th season!
My favorite was the ones with Vincent D’Onofrio in them. The SVU one is too much into sexual details over and over. They can get rid of SVU but keep the rest.
L&O has had a great run and I have enjoyed the show until the last few seasons. This season Wolf’s left wing politics really infected the show and I stopped watching. I like to be entertained not “preached at”.
Given the expense of scripted drama wonder if cost is still the real driver at NBC or perhaps Comcast is starting to exert some influence.
L&O and spin off’s were so connected to NYC I question how LA will work, Life was the only recent LE show based in LA that was different enough.
You are so right! This was once a great show, until the politics took over. I was surfing the other night and heard a Law & Order character say: “He threatened to kill me unless I spoke out against cap and trade.” Really, people!
Since indications were it was a go, and the rumored cancellation was precipitated by discussions between TNT and NBCU, I guess the question is what is TNT thinking, a question closely tied in with what was NBCU proposing to them?
Maybe if they had stopped the partisan attacks on conservative values their ratings won’t have been so soft. They purposely drove away part of their audience with their stance on gun control, abortion, illegal aliens, and the war in Iraq.
“They purposely drove away part of their audience with their stance on gun control, abortion, illegal aliens, and the war in Iraq.”
With all due respect, writing a show where the entire cast of Law & Order sounded like American Dad! would be REALLY boring.
If NBC really lets this show go off the air after 20 years without even the courtesy of a planned final episode, considering everything that franchise did to keep the network afloat through some lean years, then their whole “We’re talent-friendly now!” vibe that they’ve been cultivating since Gaspin took over might as well never have happened. Suck it up and do the right thing, NBC! Have some class!
Nothing on TV compares to this show. The cast this season seems to work really well together. Will really miss S. Epatha Merkerson, though if show does continue. And life without Sam Waterston??? Don’t do it!!
I do not want to see Law and Order canceled. What is wrong with NBC? They seem to not care about what their viewers want – terminating Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and Eric Bogosian and now the original Law and Order show?? I don’t think I am interested in watching a Law and Order show that’s from LA. New York is their place. I just think I am finished with watching NBC totally. They started doing underhanded things back with Conan and they continue to be down and dirty and back stabbing. I hope that TNT can pick up the original Law and Order shows with new episodes. NBC needs to change their ways. Sooner or later people are going to get fed up with their underhanded dealings.
Don’t forget Jay Leno. He was “forced” into retirement at the Tonight Show in 2004 so that Conan can take over the place. NBC gave Jay the 10 PM slot because they were afraid that he would bolt to another network, but the ratings were so bad that NBC had to move Jay back into his original time slot thus screwing with Conan.
Dick Wolf, drop the NBC shackles at once.
If NBC does not care about what their viewers want, then why did the ratings for L&O suck so bad? Are you saying that because you and your parents watch L&O every week then that must mean everybody else does too?
In the past, maybe the first 14 years or so Law and Order did a fantastic job of showing multiple viewpoints when it would deal with politics. As an independent I enjoyed that quite a bit. However the past 5 years or so it has really become just left wing propaganda and I believe that is why the ratings have gone so downhill. It turns off half the population.
I realize it’s all trendy to get up on your soapbox and talk about how ’stupid’ everyone else is when a show you like gets canceled, but I hate to break it to you: Law and Order is not ‘intelligent’.
It was intelligent a looong time ago when Michael Moriarty was on, and they actually presented both mysteries and two-sided political debates. Since then it has become more and more of a preachy left-wing show with idiotic stories ‘ripped from the headlines!’.
Glad it’s dying. Hopefully the equally left-wing gasbag spinoffs, like the execrable SVU, will follow suit.
Yes I agree there should at least be a nice send off. As much as I didn’t want to see NYPD Blue get canceled, they at least did a very nice last season for that show. It was a very nice tribute to the show. NBC is the worst channel on tv. It really is. I do not want to see L & O get canceled but after 20 years of viewers and obtaining money from the sponsors of L & O they can’t even have a proper send off?
Cancel ‘Law & Order’?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! It, NOT stupid ‘Gunsmoke’, deserves to be the longest-running TV drama!!!!!!
The MSNBC website is reporting that the show has been canceled. Unfortunately, that seems pretty official.
The only NBC decision more genius this year was Jay Leno at 10:00.
NBC is ridiculous, why would they get rid of a show with SO many die hard fans!
IDIOTS! Conan and now Law and Order?
Without L&O (orginal one) the only other thing decent on TV will be star trek reruns.
NBC stands for “NoBodyCares”
Dick Wolf should take BOTH L&O and L&O:LA to TNT or anywhere but NBC. For the last few years, L&O has been one of NBC’s only real performers and this is the way they go out?! Since most of the new shows are going to fail anyway, he might as well not provide NBC even an ounce of security. Wolf and L&O deserve better!
Is this part of Zucker’s charm offensive?!
blockquote cite=”Over the past five seasons the show has been in four different regular timeslots.
What are they going to put on Friday nights? At least keep it there for this season for 13 episodes.”
That’s how they killed Homicide: Life on the Streets which was a much better show.
I loved L&O in the Orbach days. Then it became a standard predictable liberal preachfest. The only time you couldn’t predict who the killer would be was when there were two conservative white males.
This is insane! I thought NBC was crazy when they dropped Southland, but this is REALLY crazy!
Re the post about NBC being crazy when they dropped Southland.
I fully agree. Southland was a terrific show that hadn’t been contaminated with L&O type propaganda. I was glad to see it revived away from the NBC hacks.
Let’s see cancel Xmas, sunshine,Law and Order and oh yea Life (remember that great tv show ) Well, maybe NBC should cancel the people who come up with these smart ideas .
L&O was on 20 years. That’s a good run; time to end it. And this could open up a possible spot for Rex is Not Your Lawyer, which I really want to see.
It’s over….It’s OVER! Thank you God! The boring behemoth is dead! Wolf Dick, begone!
NBC sucks, anyway. I haven’t liked the original L&O since Jerry Orbach died. And, L&O: SVU is the only NBC program I watch since Conan left. Here’s hoping SVU gets to stay on the air, and NBC goes downhill faster….Wait…they’re already in dead last. Maybe they can get their ass kicked by cable.
Hey, wait, I have to pay for all of these channels as well. It may as well be cable b/c we’re paying to watch this. All of these channels have gone digital (unless of course you paid for that little box w/ the the 40 dollar coupon). As for many of us, we are paying for what was once free television and this is why so many of us are ticked because we should 9as the audience) direct which programs that WE are paying for. And yes, they need to can these reality piss poor programing. I truly believe that this is another way of keeping America stupid and it is insulting. This is not so much about taking this show off the air as it is that so many of us are really tired of what we are being practically force fed to watch when turning the channel is no longer an option. This is very much political and much more than we realize. Too many fools are in power of what we have the right to watch and now they are feeding us with the most instant mashed potato mush in he history of television.
NBC messed up L&O with its Jay Leno Show, different date &time when Jay failed it was to late to recoup for this season. And then all of the reruns. Keep L&O it is the best thing NBC has going. NBC do not be foolish, look at the ratings, ratings NBC created with poor scheduling.
The ratings had droped because of the overbearing one-sided political views of the writers for the past five seasons. The actors have always been first-rate. Someone or everyone at NBC should be fired for this bone-head decission. Except for Jay Leno
there will be no reason to watch NBC (nothing but confusion). Again they prove that the viewers are the last of thir concerns. A POX on them all.
Jeff Zucker is a feckless popinjay. How the freak does he keep his job? The only possible explanation is that he witnessed the entire Universal Board of Directors murder some helpless children and then humiliate the bodies. Keep it up, J-Zee, you’re the funniest sit-com NBC has ever had.
Flagship Law and Order was a wonderful drama for 20 great years.Revolving cast changes never affected quality of show.Lately ,shows have been high claibre. Many actors have appeared on the show over the many years. What ashame it wasn’t allowed to break Gunsmokes reign. We so miss Jerry Orback’s Leenie Briscoe.NBC has no heart!
Please don’t drop this favorite show, it is the ONLY thinking, entertaining, who-done-it show on TV that dosen’t show body parts, violence, and sometimes the bad guy gets away with it plots.
I HATE reality TV, give us our favorite stars……WTH????
LAW AND ORDER is the most wonderful and exciting show ever shown on TV. It has great story line, acting and has a special way of keeping the storyline going, without getting too involved with the characters day to day lives. This is what makes it so unusual and, also keeps me watching year after year, etc. I am truly upset just learning it is no longer to be. Most tv is unwatchable, so NBC cancels and loses its last show to watch.
HOW COULD THEY???
Kind of makes me wonder if all these “unnamed sources” who are “not authorized by their companies to speak of the matter” are really the companies–NBC, NBC-Universal (or whatever they are calling their production arm this month), and Dick Wolf Productions–playing all of you in the media for negotiating leverage. It happens in politics. It’s how baseball’s free agent season now operates.
I just wish you reporters were a little more critical of your unnamed sources real motivations rather than simply repeating what they tell you.
Why would they cancel L&O?? That show is my drug. I am loving the chemistry of Alana, Linus, Jeremy, Anthony and Sam–I am heart broken.
As for L&O:LA count me out. The one reason why I love L&O and L&O:SVU is because it takes place in New York. Having an LA spin off is similar to the CSI franchise of Miami and New York in terms of location–none as good (in my opinion) as Las Vegas.
This is sad–the only show on NBC that I will watch is L&O SVU.
Well how many are they getting rid of? Aren’t there like 4 different versions?
I just dont understand. How could the network cancel their only billion dollar franchise. Their highest rated show, the office does under 10 million viewers and the lead actor is leaving after next season. Why would they cancel one of their few shows in syndication. I thought when silvermen was fired it would be the end to NBC’s stupidity but Zucker needs to go NOW! I mean SVU did 16 million viewers before it was moved because of leno. If they cancel it im done with NBC all its cable channels and Universal movies and i mean it! It wont make a difference but i cant give these idiots my money anymore!
I am really starting to hate NBC. First The Unit, now Law & Order, screw NBC!
LOu
Hey nimwit – The Unit was on CBS.
I’ve watched it every season since the start.
You could see this coming though, they keep changing the day and time slot so that you don’t know where it is. It gets pre-empted by anything. I knew it was near the end when it moved to the Friday night death slot.
Don’t forget we can all move to the UK and watch L&O UK. With wigs.
Bring back S. Epatha & keep L&O, NBC.
DUHN DUHN !
“DUHN DUHN” LOL!! to whom ever wrote that! Only a true L&O fan will know that sound and what that means. Great! LOL!
Zuckers working for abc.
Meh…Why watch Law & Order when you can read it in the newspaper every day? One of the most over rated dramas ever…I’ll admit the cast has been strong at times but come on…the ripped from the headlines stories grew old for me…Oh, and all this hulla-balloo about “LOLA?” Dick Wolf tried it a few years ago…It was called Dragnet…
I stopped watching L & O a few years back when it becomes too much of a leftist propagnda tool.
Dick Wolf reneged on a pilot deal with me years ago. I think it’s pure poetic justice that it has finally happened to him on the one deal he wanted most. Face it, Dick… “Gunsmoke” still holds the record and you do not. Ain’t Karma a bitch?
Yes karma is a bitch, don’t forget how DW screwed Vincent D’Onofrio on Law and Order CI. I can’t wait for that show to be canceled. Jeff Goldblum is a terrible actor, never liked him from way back when I saw him in the remake of the Fly. So DW welcome to the club of being screwed over.
Geez i hope to watch this show at http://www.clickdavao.com/onlinetv
Personally I always loved the original L&O because it does ensemble better than the other spinoffs. SVU has me meh with too much focus on Liv and El. CI never clicked with me with only Goren and his amazing friends.
I think NBC blew a real, historic chance with the cancellation of LAW & ORDER. If their hype machine had been properly oiled and working, they would have had a chance to generate some real buzz regarding all their offerings. Instead, they are going to come off as the guys who f*cked up one of the longest-running shows in tv history, right after f*ucking up THE TONIGHT SHOW. These guys would cancel/f^ck up OPRAH and SESAME STREET if they had the chance!
I tell you – Jeff Zucker and his team – you’re worth every penny you’re getting.
I stopped watching Law and Order years ago when it stopped being entertainment and became ‘ethnic studies and gender studies’ propaganda. It was a good idea and good show that became a rotten idea and rotten show. Lately NCIS has gone the same way and I have stopped watching that as well. Why can’t they just entertain us?
Law and order was cooked 5 years ago. If NBC could develop anything, they would have replaced it long ago. A great show past its prime. Next, but who really watches NBC’s low budget programming anyway?
Law & Order is a staple television program. NBC definitely needs to reconsider. It could certainly sabotage their own interest by removing the show from air.
Wow, NBC lies and screws over a long time business partner, gee what at surprise. Zucker needs to go. He’s a backstabbing, detestable pig.
I agree, they are backstabbing and underhanded especially since comcast and nbc merged.
