When Deadline revealed that Bill Condon would direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, comments were mixed about the choice. Summit Entertainment finally confirmed the choice last week — and below is his note to the Twilight Saga fans. (Chris Weitz also wooed the Twi-hards in a note when he was anointed.) I think Condon is a good choice given his credits for strong emotional and genre stories. He’s best known for directing Dreamgirls and Kinsey, and writing the script for the Oscar-winning Chicago. His fright experience includes directing a Candyman sequel. And he won an Oscar for writing Gods and Monsters about the final days of Frankenstein director James Whale. Here’s his facebook note to fans:
Greetings Twihards, Twifans, Twilight Moms, Team Edward, Team Jacob and Team Switzerland,
I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I’m stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you’ve probably heard, I’ve been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit – who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.
I’m pretty busy bringing myself up to speed on what you already know by heart: I’ve read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine’s and Chris’s movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine’s notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz’s companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk – a corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic. I realize that this barely qualifies me for “newborn” status in the universe you’ve been living inside for a few years now, but a guy’s gotta start somewhere.
Like many of you, I’ve always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid. But that alone hadn’t been enough to get me interested in making a vampire movie, even though my early screenwriting and directing efforts grew out of a great love for horror movies and thrillers. Since making GODS AND MONSTERS thirteen years ago, however, I’ve been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones.
The wonderful world that Stephenie has created has obviously struck a chord with you, and I don’t think it’s difficult to see why. For me, her characters are simultaneously timeless, yet very modern. Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy – and it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout.
I’m a huge admirer of the already-iconic Kristen, Robert, and Taylor, and wanted to be the one to work with them as they face the challenges of bringing your beloved characters to the end of their journeys. Really, what could be more fun than that?
Please feel free to ask questions in the comments section below, and I’ll do my best to answer them. I hope that this will be the first of many occasions I’ll get to check in with you as we set to work bringing BREAKING DAWN to the screen. I am excited and grateful to have all of you alongside me for my TWILIGHT journey.
All best,
Bill Condon
P.S. Answer #1: No, there won’t be any musical numbers

Twilight saga is overrated. For ordynary man it is boring like hell
Hi David
Can you say that you will keep as much to the book as possible, just as previous directors,
Hello david.
please keep as much to the book as possible, even if it will take to movies. it’s a good story and i really love it. so don’t put it all in one because that does no good to the movies and bes book ever.
we will see.
thank you
His name is Bill, not David. David Slade directed Eclipse.
The first two Twilights were the most boring films I’ve ever witnessed as part of a teen frenzy. For Condon to go paycheck on this muck shows that this guy must have hit a serious brick wall in either the power to get films made or has nothing left in his creative desires.
I just wanted to say I really liked Cathrine Hardwicks talent in Twilight, I enjoyed New Moon aswell, But I am a book junkie and I have to say I read the whole book series at least 6 times, there is just something about reading a good book even if I read them over and over they never got boring. I really hope though that the last two books are more like the books with long chapters. After all these are the final movies lets make them awesome.
Hi Bill, I was wonderine the same thing Jane was. I have read all four books as well as the graphic novel volume 1 and own the first two movies of the series. The first movie was alright but the fact that it didn’t quite follow along with the movie made it less appealing. New Moon on the other hand was funominal. It resemembled the book almost entirely and that as a fan is what I am looking forward to.
Hey Twihards,
Can you not read? This posting is a reposting from somewhere else (facebook), hence the pink blockquote. Condon isn’t going to be replying to any of your comments on this thread.
Also, not sure if “funominal” is spelled that way as a joke or if you really think that is how you spell phenomenal.
Well twilight and New Moon have both made top recoed sales in the box office, and are marked pretty damn high for best movies so… And im pretty sure just by watching the movie trailers that Eclipse is gonna be great and can’t wait to watch in on June 30 in theaters.
Hi there, will The character Reneseme be a CGI?
As I watch the teen frenzy go crazy of this nonsense I always think to myself, WOW is this really our future generation? Now THAT is scary…
But then I see all these 30 and 40 year old women going as crazy as these 13 year old girls and I just shake my head.
Well, just think of it this way: men reach their sexual peak at 17 while women at 35. So, actually, biologically it makes perfect sex that middle aged women would be going crazy over Twilight. Besides, its a bit liberating to think that SOME women out there, like fictional Bella character, don’t have to struggle through the “flaws” that typical real men think we should tolerate, forgive and love them because of. I do sigh when I think of a man who loves selflessly, who isn’t rude, or boorish or mean; who never left the love of his life to “sample life” before coming back to her; who only left her because he struggled to do the right thing, not to pursue his own goals and kick her to the curb, a thing deemed acceptable in our society; who never betrayed or mistreated her so that we can then forgive him because we are such “maternal” gentle creatures. Pause for thought, girls, maybe we should actually hold out for someone who is worthy! Then again, we may end up single for life that way.
People make me laugh: It isn’t the director that’ll make this movie lame, it’s the books that it’ll be based on that’ll make it lame. Kind of hard to polish a big piece of crap.
I cannot wait for this shit to be done. It’s such a stain on culture.
I believe that the most difficult part of bringing the Breaking Dawn story from book to film is the that “I love you more than you love me” idea. How can you convey that visually? Some of the wording in the books was pure prose in its description. This brought back my romantic remembering, 40 years ago, in its descriptive detail and still remains as the reason I’ve gone and reread the words and books 5 and 6 times. I agree the fourth and first books were the most enjoyable, just based on the story line. I’m sure Bill Condon will give his best effort and I look forward to getting all four films on DVD.
Okay so really if u are not a twihard fan please don’t be inconciderate and rude to all of us who actually enjoy the series. I personally cannot wait for the eclipse and breaking dawn movies. Team jacob all the way! Best of luck to the directors hope u would please stick to the books as close as possible. Rock on twilight fans and to the non fans well get over it and quit being so nasty to all of us who actually know what talent and good books and movies are.
Thanks for taking on this project with such enthusiasm and sincerity. Myself, I like TWILIGHT quite a bit, though I would never consider myself a devotee. I just wanted to say that no matter what the pressures drop on you: whatever may come from the studio/suits who know nothing about story construction; from the marketing guys, from anti-TWILIGHT people … please always REMEMBER you’re making this for a very specific audience: the lovers of the books. Please don’t try to please others; this movis is NOT for TRUE BLOOD fans, not INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE FANS, not DRACULA or SAW fans. Target & make this movie for the millions of the novels’ fans and you can’t go wrong. And please don’t go about changing major plot points, characters, or endings. Just condense the book well, retain its spirit, respect the material — and you’ll have a giant success that will please millions.
I wish you great good luck on your project.
Twilight’s totally overrated…don’t see what all the fuss is about!
I’m just like everyone else… I hope you can stick to the book as much as possible because Im in love with all the twilght books ecspecially breaking dawn…..
No musical numbers?!?! WTF?!? I’m skipping it then!
I can’t find a Facebook page that has this letter on it…??
Why are you twilight haters researching information on the Twilight Saga, then posting negative statements. Now that doesn’t make any sense. If you do not like the books or movies that’s your right, but stop wasting your time and ours by your apparent obsessive hunt for news on Twilight. These negative comments are made mostly by men. Why are you so insecure? This is just fantasy.
You know there is so much going on in our world that is negative, what does it hurt to take a walk in the fancy world, I think it is awsome that you have invested the time in to get the feel of what twilight is all about. I am a 66yr old grandmother and my daughter and grandauhters have never had so much fun as we have with the sharing after reading each book and each movie.
I am sure without a dought Bill you will connect with and make a awsome end to a great experience when our world is in the mess that it is in. THANK YOU STEPHANIE AND ALL WHO WILL BE INVOLVED IN BREAKING DAWN.
Could you please tone down the eyes on the vampires? They look to fake, I like the eyes in Twilight because it was subtle…left you guessing if something is different with them or not. Now their eyes are so alien like. Also another pointer would be to bring the Edward’s song to Bella back when they are together. Good luck with the movie and I am sure you will do great…as long as you tone down the eyes.
I heard this is the last twilight move. Let at least come out wit one more call twilight revegen of the falling. Bill condon if you read this plz email at nukewill@yahoo.com ican. Send you more detail about this movie so plz get this
Not sure if this would reach you in a midst of millions of fan postings, but I hope it will… My favorite part of Breaking Dawn was Jacob’s voice. As Bella narrated the previous films, can Jacob narrate as he does in the book? His voice was candid and funny and so bravely blunt – it would be wonderful if you could keep that.
I’ve read the comments posted and I think that most of them are entertaining. But, all of the negative readers need to stop taking fiction so seriously. If you didn’t enjoy the books (although most of us did), don’t see the movies. And if you saw the movies and didn’t like them, don’t see them again. Most American fans have read all of the books multiple times and own all of the movies, myself included. Granted, we’re not talking Hemmingway here but if you have an imagination, they’re quite enjoyable and even quite addicting. I sincerely wish that Stephanie would finish “Edwards View” and even expand on the original story and characters.
My only comment for the director is, “I hope that you haven’t stuck another god awful wig on Bella for Breaking Dawn”!
I think I’ll go listen to Super Massive Black Hole now.
