Remember the good old media days when a Newsweek magazine cover could make or break a movie?
Now its 51-year parent company, the Washington Post Co, has hired Allen & Co to find a buyer for the money-losing mag. Newsweek has been unprofitable since 2007. “Despite heroic efforts on the part of Newsweek’s management and staff, we expect it to still lose money in 2010,” Washington Post Chairman Donald Graham said in the statement. “In the current climate, it might be a better fit elsewhere.” As a one-time Newsweek correspondent myself (based in Washington DC and then Los Angeles), this is a sad day indeed. On the other hand, the mag isn’t even hiring journalists anymore: shameful that its website has sunk so low as to recently bring aboard that asshole Gabriel Snyder who couldn’t even keep his job chasing vagina shots at the despicable Gawker gossip site.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

As an Ex-subscriber to Newsweek for years…what eventually did me in and I must assume others also, is the Mega-Liberal bias that’s found throughout the Magazine… to call it a “News” magazine is not at all accurate! It’s the left voice of the Washington Post. It got so bad that I could no longer pay for entire magazine dominated by one point of view.
Exactly on point! The magazine had its token conservative in George Will, but everything else about the magazine was overwrought liberal swill, starting with Jon Meacham, Jonathan Alter, and Fareed Zakharia (spelling?). Sadly, it’s just as bad or worse with Time magazine and it’s house crazed left wing idiot, Joe Klein, and the rest of that ilk.
…and since you’re against any medium that is dominated by only one point of view I assume you never watch Fox news either?
That’s an unrealistic comment. While it’s true that Fox stacks the deck a little on the conservative side, it also gives a liberal point of view. Newsweek is one sided. I’ve even stopped subscribing to Scientific American, because left wingers have taken it over, and only present science that supports their politics. That’s disgusting in a Science magazine.
[facepalm] “While it’s true that Fox stacks the deck a little on the conservative side, it also gives a liberal point of view.”
Okay, the long-standing scientific conjecture that there may be innumerable universes has just been validated. From one of the other ones.
There is no need for Newsweek’s dated content in the era of new media. The publication is a dinosaur of left-wing political bias. This is a joyous day for me. Conservative voices are finally being heard and another mouthpiece of liberal (progressive) thought is DEAD. A dozen more liberal media outlets need to expire and the playing field might just be level in a few years. Keep dropping those subscriptions and switching channels.
Calling Newsweek a mouthpiece of liberal progressive thought is an insult to mouthpieces, liberals, progressives, and thought.
Which explains why the conservative Washington Times is doing so well.
Agree about Snyder, but have a feeling some rectums would take umbrage at being lumped together with a total asshole like Gabriel.
Hope the new buyers are smart enough to fire him, too.
Here’s a poll on which left-wing media outlet you’d prefer to see go out of business first:

If Obamaweek goes under, what will the Lefties read while waiting in the government-run doctors’ offices?
I cancelled my subscription about a 1/2 year ago. It was right after the Editor and Chief proclaimed on national television that Obama was not just the President “but more like a God watching over us.”
I was a former subscriber 7 years ago. Started up my subscription 5 years later and was stunned how far left the magazine had turned. This is a great day for whatever real journalists still exist out there.
You goofballs. It’s got nothing to do with Liberal vs Conservative bias. Look at that fucking thing called the Internet. Catch up on Current Stats: Time Machine is losing readership and subscriptions, too. Start the counting; the TIME paper edition goes next. Not right now, but no better in Vegas would give it odds to exist seven years from now.
The world is changing. Get it right, or go down the tubes like the recording industry… and newspapers… and magazines (ALL magazines)…
Murdoch should buy it and turn it into a conservative opinion journal just to piss off the remaining subscribers (all five of them).
Funny that the above commenters think Newsweek is liberal when it hires “center-right” hacks like Meacham and Evan Thomas.
And the Post itself has degraded its reputation repeatedly over the past few years under Hiatt and Katherine Graham’s idiot grand-daughter. That rag should be on the block too. How far it has fallen from the Woodward/Bernstein days.
How could anyone think a magazine that objectified a leggy Sarah Palin in a jogging outfit on its cover, published photo after halo-laden photo of Obama posed as a religious icon, proclaims “We’re All Socialists Now,” and whose editor announced on national television that Obama is “sort of God” possibly be considered leftist? Who could possibly think a magazine that published a false story about a Koran being flushed down a toilet at Guantanamo Bay is anti-conservative?
oh come on, it’s not mother jones or the nation but it’s obviously a liberal mag
Sorry to be so shallow, but I cancelled MY subscription when they transformed the look and the layout of the magazine. It ended up looking like an effing text book. I liked it the way it was. Sad really. I used to love reading it.
“Funny that the above commenters think Newsweek is liberal when it hires “center-right” hacks like Meacham and Evan Thomas. ”
Meacham, center-right? Mr. Toad, you are an idiot. A complete and total idiot. Get off the weed, man. It’s rotting your brain.
I got my marshmallows ready to toast when that liberal-rag sheet Newsweek finally goes under.
all the newsweeklies are dinosaurs…their heyday was the 70s, since then it has been one long slide, and now it is impossible to keep them profitable even on a shoestring…your next visit to the dentist is going to be like a time machine voyage
Who knew the Sarah Palin for President committee reads Nikki’s blog?
I was never a fan of the paper mag, but I thought their website was quite excellent.
Maybe if Sarah Palin and her merry band of idiots would have read a quality news magazine like Newsweek or Time she/they wouldn’t appear quite so fucking stupid. What do the right wingers read when sitting on the toilet… the Bible? I wonder if they do indeed even read. Long live the left wing and it’s intellectual base.
“it’s intellectual base?” I think you mean its. So much for intellectuals.
Wow… amazing how many wing nuts (right-wing nuts for you redneck morons who don’t get shorthand) read this blog here on Hollywood. When are you narrow minded zombies gonna wake up and quit the polarizing hypebole about liberal “bad” and conservative “good”??
C’mon you nuts, your buying hook, line and sinker the Palin “Drill, bay drill” back in 2008 is one reason we have the worst ecological disaster happening in this country right now. Quit drinking the right-wing koolaid and contributing to the corrupt powers that allow this sh*t to happen. I hate to say this, but the redneck South — huge supporters of Bush, Palin et al deserve what they’re getting now, on their shores.
Unfortunately, not everyone in the South deserves this, but enough of you do. Stop supporting these pro-business at all cost Republican leaders, for God’s sake. They are NOT on your side. And certainly not because they speak using “Christian” language.
Tough luck for Donald Graham. He grew up thinking he would inherit an empire, and now it’s crumbling.
