Staffers at the WME office in NYC noticed recently that the portrait of William Morris is suddenly missing. The oil painting of the founder of the 112-year-old agency that Endeavor took over last year had hung by the main conference room for a long time. But it suddenly disappeared the same week that Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell and Rick Rosen were all in NYC. ”Perhaps it’s being repaired. Or relocated. Who knows? They certainly tell us nothing,” one employee emailed me. I think the old guy got fired instead of reprimanded.
What do you think happened to him?
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

i used to look up to him until he fired those people for their blogs, emails
i hope someday i can be the one to take down his picture
i wonder if they took out all the mirrors to
He eloped with Snooki
out with the old in with the new
They found out he was Jewish and canned him.
You’re ridiculous. The head of the agency is Ari Emanuel, who is Jewish.
You’re ridiculous. The head of the agency is Ari Emanuel, who is a Sagittarius.
No shit, really? Do ya think? Perhaps you fail to see the multiple layers of sarcasm in that one simple line; a commentary on recent agency personnel-related posts on this board as well as the glaringly obvious fact that it’s a company found, built up and currently run predominantly by members of the Jewish faith.
If you’re a screenwriter, don’t quit your day job…
Ari read his blog and is now having him air brushed to his likeness.
hope the WME staffer used a personal email to you Nikki
Shortly after Wyatt and wirtschafter took over WMA in 2000, the paintings of William Morris Sr and Abe Lastfogel suddenly disappeared from where the had hung for decades in the lobby.
What immediately began as watercooler grumblings snowballed into disgust. It was seen as great disrespect to the legacy and its lineage. Things got so bad that Jim was forced to address the subject in staff meetings. He claimed the paintings were taken down out of respect because he didnt want them getting damaged. We were told the portraits were put into storage and that Jim was going to create a WMA legacy museum and re-display the paintings there. Um, Jim we’re still waiting.
Turns out that event was only the beginning of what would became Jim’s long steady stream of yellow urine on WMA’s legacy. Now it is Ari who is holding and shaking it to get that last drop out before he zips up.
I think it was committed by Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with the candlestick!
But seriously, and by that I mean totally non-seriously there are 4 possible reasons…
1. It’s being cleaned.
2. It’s being repainted so William Morris will look more like Ari Emmanuel.
3. Ari doesn’t like it coming to life and criticizing his work at times when only he can see and hear it.\
4. The painting got an offer from CAA that it couldn’t refuse.
They filed it away with the paintings of Morris Stoller and Abe Lastfogel that Jim Wiatt and Dave Wirtschafter (remember those guys??) had removed in the old WMA LA office lobby when they got there….They’re probably for sale on EBay now.. These are just reminders to these guys of their own mortality, which I’m sure they’d rather not think about.
He’s a partner now at Gersh!
The oil painting of WM is being replaced by an air-brushed glossy of AE.
WIlliam Morris is no longer “relevant”.
Ari and co. entered into the merger because the idea of taking over a storied company like WMA built up their egos…
Now that they’re in there and realize what a piece of shit the place is, they’re trying to rid themselves of all reminders of it.
Out with the oil in with the douche.
i heard he’s being replaced with Jack Endeavor
I know you love to attack anything to do with WME – but this is getting silly and childish. Let them run their company any way they wish. If they want to put a poster of Alf up on the wall – who gives a crap. Historical significance in Hollywood is meaningless. Do you have a painting of the people that used to live in your house in the living room?
I have a poster of ALF in my dorm. It’s a black & white photo of him and Ed McMahon engaged in what they used to call a “French” kiss in little nighties on a tiny bed.
I’m holding my breath for William Morris’ dramatic good-bye email to the entire company.
Ari wants to replace it with an oil painting of him.
“Got Caught”…That makes a lot of sense considering Ari Emanuel, Rick Rosen and John Fogelman are on the board…
Good one!
He should have apologized for being old. I mean, what did you really expect? [sarc]
I think Irv Weintraub ate him.
Rosen’s trying to get the portrait a talk show deal
@Arthur
In reality, the paintings have a potent significance that was not lost upon the previous WM leadership. If recollect serves, in addition to the portraits, a photo of the original “store front” William Morris “shop” was also displayed. Rifkin was “all about the new”, yet during his tenure the portraits were never removed. Furthermore WM always had pretty mundane reception areas & the rationale for it was “we spend all our money & time with emphasis upon the client…not what our offices look like”. Lastly…”Do you have a painting of the people that used to live in your house in the living room?” is about as idiotic as an attempted intelligent comment could be. The William Morris name is a brand—and it lives on in William Morris Endeavor Entertainment…why wouldn’t a company display a portrait of the person for whom it was named/founded? It’s not like the company name is “Interglobal”. Also…I wonder if that “museum” where the portraits were going to be displayed, was also slated to have the Lichtenstein (sic) that was once displayed @ CAA HQ…it is relevant to where WM finds itself today, no? (FYI: sarcasm).
Who cares if the WME group took it down? Honestly it’s not that big of a deal. Everyone is always criticizing Ari because he is a ruthless agent and one of the best in the business… is that a bad thing?
