EXCLUSIVE: It’s good news for CBS’ comedy Bleep My Dad Says. The hot pilot is on the verge of a series pickup and is already making deals with writers. But when it officially becomes a series, it will be with a new lead. I hear the network has decided to replace Ryan Devlin, who starred in the pilot. Based on the Twitter account, Bleep centers on a young guy, the role that will be recast, and his opinionated dad, played by William Shatner. Twitter star Justin Halpern, on whom the main character is based, co-wrote the WBTV-produced pilot with Patrick Schumacker, with Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick executive producing.
Veteran sitcom helmer James Burrows directed the pilot, which co-stars Nicole Sullivan.

anybody have a link to a pdf of the script? can’t find it anywhere.
Wow, that’s a surprise. I heard Devlin nailed it. Classic Moonves move to go name-y after the fact.
Devlin is a lightweight and NOT funny at all. Good riddance to him. Get someone worthy to go against Shatner.
Not true. Devlin is solid on Cougar Town and was great on Party Down. Shatner is a powerhouse to be sure… but it seems like Devlin was a victim of playing the name game.
Devlin absolutely got screwed by the name game. I’ve seen a lot of his work, and I can tell you it wasn’t his acting that lost him the job. Watch CBS mess it up by casting some psuedo star who can’t act but brings a small audience… that will stop watching just after the rest of us.
Bullshit on the age-reason. Devlin is the same age (29) as Justin and looks a whole lot younger.
Either he didn’t mesh w/ Shatner, or they didn’t dig his acting. Whichever, they oughta say.
They got rid of his girlfriend too. Seems like they’re re-working the concept maybe.
Bret Harrison anyone?
GREAT idea.
who?? what about JUSTIN LONG!!! thought that one was obvious…
CHRIS PINE! How awesome would that be?!
I can’t believe this crap is actually being turned into a TV series. I mean, it’s only funny b/c the old man curses…big whoop.
Saw the pilot tape… Devlin did indeed nail it. He and Shatner worked well with each other. If anything, Devlin’s female opposite should have been the one to go. She was clearly the weakest of the five leads.
Should be interesting to see what name they want to replace him with.
lets just say that many people have know this was going to happen for a very long time. Jason Biggs, anyone??? i don’t think his pilot got picked up.
it’s nice that the cat is finally out of the bag
If anyone know it would’ve been on Deadline! This came as a surprise to me.
actually his pilot, now called Mad Love is still in contention. It was actually pretty damn funny.
Jason Biggs? Why — because he had a hit movie over a decade ago? That’s the kind of “name” power they think they need? I don’t know why people can’t see that the concept is king for this pilot and Shatner is a big enough star to carry the whole darn thing. It’s better to surround him with talented actors who can set him up and let him shine like Devlin did than to put another “star” in there who will want more attention for themselves. But I’m sure if Moonves has his sights set on Biggs for this (which he might have all along) he’ll just kill the other pilot so he can have him, even if it was funny.
I hear they’re going after Justin Long.
“I didn’t say actors are cattle, I said: actors should be treated like cattle.” – Big Al Hitchcock
Big Les Moonves would concur.
“It’s Los Angeles, son. It’s the epicenter of the asshole earthquake. They’d fuck you twice if they had another dick.” – shitmydadsays tweet
“Ya just keep on using me, until you use me up.” – Bill Withers (and most actors to any casting director)
I hear they’re also letting go one or two more cast members. Sounds like it was a script issue not an actor issue. They had a talented cast of actors who’ve all done series in the past…
Bret Harrison would be great.
because he has a ton of hits on his resume
This sucks. I know Devlin and this comes as a shock as he’s such a great guy, and the chemistry between him and Shatner was great. True Devlin is not a big name, but that’s what worked so well for him as a foil for Shatner’s presence. Bummer.
I was at the taping and Devlin was the only drag on this brilliantly written and produced pilot. Shatner and the supporting cast were so spot on that Devlin stuck out like a sore thumb. It’s a smart move. CBS probably sees a shot at years of good comedy from Kohan/Mutchnick and are making the move to support that. Really looking forward to this one. Congrats to everyone involved!
SO NOT TRUE. I was at the taping and Devlin held up great with Shatner. Great chemistry. He had a tough job always setting up Shatner for the punch line and he pulled it off brilliantly. I’m scared a name actor in the role will compete for laughs rather than work as a team like Devlin and the others did with Shatner…

sometimes smart people don’t spill important secrets and risk of their jobs. this is a BFD and would NOT have been smart to leak

+100!!!
I’d heard they were gonna do this for a while. He must be a good audtioner because from everything i have seen he is not good. He wasn’t good in this. I agree with the other poster that he stuck out in an otherwise solid pilot. He wasn’t good in the ABC pilot The JOB last year. He was terrible on Veronica Mars. Maybe now people will finally get a clue that he can’t act.
You and all the naysayers out there regarding devlin are full of “shit”. he is a talented actor and nailed it in the pilot.
Many VERY talented actors get re-cast in pilots. Devlin being pulled out for a name is no reflection on his talent or performance. I work for someone at the studio and followed this closely. Devlin tested GREAT and did indeed to a great job. But CBS had their minds set on a name from very early on.
You should check your facts before you start throwing out obviously personal attacks — Devlin wasn’t in a pilot called The JOB last year.
It is an ignorant statement to say that he books so many jobs because he’s a “good auditioner” — he books so many jobs because he is talented and professional and he has charisma. He was a perfect straight man for Shatner in the pilot, and his timing is impeccable. Cutting him is an unfortunate example of the fear and short-sightedness that rules this business.
This would be one of the extremely few items I would actually purchase, if:
-The actual content can stay on par with the hype
*and*
-Every episode be reshot using the ‘adult language’ label
William Shatner can make this project work for many years to come, and with his timing and pitch, I actually would pay $$$ to have a library of him saying shit and fuck(sophomoric=yes funny=definitely)
I also saw the taping – Devlin was spot on brilliant and the chemistry between him and Shat was awesome. There is something crazy going on here. When the Friends stars started the show most of them were unknowns, or just coming off commercials. How the heck is anyone supposed to make a name for themselves if they have to start out “being somebody”. nuts
Rough business. I have worked with Ryan in the past – great talent. I didn’t see the pilot, so no clue as to what the deal was, but Devlin is a working actor and will rebound.
BTW, all the “critics” in this talkback? Please. Wether or not you know someone, doesn’t mean you have to slam them as being untalented. People work out or do not work out for several reasons.
I discover that most critics around here are low level on the totem pole. Anyone working professionally generally acts like a professional.
hear, hear! Finally (along with others here) someone with “class” chiming in. You are correct, Devlin is a pro and he will come back shining in another project. Your fans are with you Devlin!

Nice comeback Ryan.
If only I got paid as much as an actor…
it’s not acting unprofessionally to tell the truth after the big news has broken. while devlin is not “untalented” he simply “couldn’t dance” with shatner as an actor. the scenes were as unbalanced as the scenes between Paul Dano and Daniel Day Lewis in THERE WILL BE BLOOD. nobody said Dano was untalented, he was just out of his league. when one actor simply blows the other out of the water, the scene losses it’s stakes, and all dramatic tension is lost.
whomever ends up getting this role is really going to have to step up their game.
Crap, by that reasoning, who the heck CAN keep up with the Shatman??
Ryan is the nicest and most normal actor I know. This really sucks.
I worked with Devlin on Party Down and Veronica Mars and he was a super nice guy and great on the shows. Too bad.
Gawd its so obvious when actors post on here. What does “nice” have to do with anything? If Devlin was good in the role they’d be keeping him on board. He wasn’t so they’ll recast. Pretty simple stuff. This show (concept, formidable built in audience and pilot) has genuine 5+ year potential. Whatever it takes to set it up for success they should do. Moving on.
Re-casting pilots is like a shark frenzy – once the suits start – they just can’t stop – now sometimes it is deserved and it truly helps the project – and other times it is just lateral change and sometimes, they end up not really being able to find a good replacement. Look, Lisa Kudrow was famously fired from the FRASIER pilot (Peri Gilpin part) and then weeks later got FRIENDS – so it can work out. Talented people are fired all the time from pilots – it is the nature of the business – as I said, sometimes it is needed but many times, just another way for the money to try and control things and show they are in charge.
