Perfect Couples appears to be the next pilot on the runway for a series pickup. I hear the hot comedy pilot from UMS and writers Scott Silveri and Jon Pollack has been authorized to make offers to writers, usually a step before a full-fledged series order. Meanwhile, the network’s other relationship comedy, the 20th TV-produced Friends With Benefits seems to still be in contention too as it is actively looking for a showrunner. And legal drama Garza is heating up. With star Jimmy Smits testing well and enjoying strong support at NBC, there is a lot of chatter about the show, from Conan O’Brien’s production company, being retooled for midseason.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Jeff Gaspin seems to be picking up a good group of pilots for NBC doesn’t he? ABC, CBS and Fox watchout because NBC might be coming out of the cellar next fall.
thank you jeff zucker
Jackson’s right. He/ She is not Jeff Zucker nor Jeff Gaspin. Jeff Zucker is an idiot and should have been fired over the Ben Silverman fiasco. He made the right decision in getting Gaspin though. One right move. Gaspin developed several hits at USA and Bravo. So, Jeff Gaspin might be the smartest NBC executive since Don Ohlmeyer.
from what i understand perfect couples still hasn’t tested yet but will probably tomorrow. we’ll see in a couple of days.
I’ve read some horrible about Friends With Benefits. I don’t know about Perfect Couples.
Saw Friends With Benefits – its the real deal. Fresh, authentic and relationships you can care about. Could be next season’s watercooler comedy.
Yeah… I saw the Friends with Benefits screener. There are literally no laughs… it’s awful. I heard the writers abandoned it in the middle, too. They’re feature writers and they were just gone.
What’s weird is that Perfect Couples is listed as a “multi-camera” in many publications. However interviews with cast member Olivia Munn suggest its a single-camera?
Can anyone clairify this? Or is it like How I Met Your Mother (hybrid) shot as single cam with added laugh track?
single camera
To clarify: Perfect Couples was a single camera shoot. If you want to see the multi-camera version of the same show, look at the Untitled Shana Goldberg Pilot over on ABC (and, just for fun, check out the husband/wife connection.)
friends with benefits i have heard was horrible as well. like i said perfect couples from what ive read and heard hasn’t been tested yet. seems like they are going for a 3rd comedy block probably on wednesday.
Read Perfect Couples. Treads in the same cliche-ridden relationship waters as Fox’s Traffic Light. I literally fell asleep reading it. If it’s well-cast with storylines that don’t bat you over the head with couples commentary, it”ll still probably suck.
If NBC actually picks up these series, i’ll be very disappointed. They are beneath NBC’s current comedy brand, and poor “Friends” ripoffs. And, the absolute last thing we need is a “Friends” ripoff in 2010.
we definitley don’t need another friends.
“Friends With Benefits” is one of those shows you’ll see on an airplane in a few years and just shake your head as a mere five minutes of it will confirm why you never bothered watching it at home in the first place.
Well THERE WAS a reason why ABC passed on this project!
Any news on Rex Is Not Your Lawyer Nikki?
1991 called. It wants it’s horribly cliche, pat premises and dialogue back. I’m surprised these two shows don’t have “cuter” titles like their predecessors. I mean, we could use another “Yes, Dear”.
This is the only possible reason that Friends with Benefits would be picked up.

“20th is really pushing “Friends With Benefits,” but the network already knows it’s not funny. And they’ve already had to re-cast. And it’s expensive. For the sake of the Imagine relationship, it’ll probably get picked up, but since there’s already this much in-fighting, they’re going to need to get rid of some people if they want it to be successful going forward.

So, NBC is considering picking up these ’90s retreads (which also includes the blandly offensive This Little Piggy), and not the actually funny The Strip? Did a chimpanzee suddenly decide to run the comedy department, the one place where NBC was actually doing well? It makes no sense to me.
Blandly offensive? really? How long did it take you to come up with that one? I was at the Piggy taping and it was a very smart and a very funny show. Great cast and great writing. I think it can breathe new life into the multi-cam sit com. And no, I did not work on this show and I’m not an agent or network exec. I’m also not some bitter writer.
I would also like to know about Rex is Not Your Lawyer. It’s the only pilot that I am excited about.
if the rumors are true chuck is coming back for a 13 episode run. so i think rex is dead and where are they gonna put these two shows. im guessing wednesday night but friday could be an option.
Also read Mr. Sunshine. Apparently it was the shooting draft. No way Matthew Perry makes that thing funny. Charlie Chaplin couldn’t make it funny. Silly characters, especially the lead, who’s pathetic. In a bad way. On the other hand, Wilde Kingdom is a tremendous script. Inspired. Look forward to seeing a long run there.
Thanks. Most of the worst trash cleaned up. Personally, keep up the good work.
