Sean Hayes has been set to host the 64th annual Tony Awards, to be broadcast June 13 from Radio City Musical Hall by CBS. Hayes is also a nominee for Promises, Promises, in the category of Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. He was also nominated by the Drama League and Outer Critics Circle.
This is the first hosting stint for Hayes. The actor recently found himself in the news after a Newsweek.com article –that bordered on homophobic–took the position that gay actors are unconvincing in straight roles. The rant singled out Hayes and his work in Promises, Promises. Hayes, who had declared he was gay just before the revival opened. His costar and love interest in the musical, Kristen Chenoweth, wrote a scathing letter of support, and it started a chorus of negative reaction against an article which seemed designed to be an attention-getter, but which backfired.

Congrats to Sean Hayes! That’s great news. Hopefully this will make up for how he might have felt after that stupid Newsweek article.
Furious D and his counterpart anhonestanswer should host. They are all-knowing and what’s right in the world today. This town would simply stop were it not for their continued postings here on this site.
Sean Hayes did not deserve the Newsweek review but he also does not deserve a nomination for Promises. Promises. I saw it and he was OK. My vote is for Chad Kimball.
BTW, Sean will be a great host.
So inappropriate – big mistake, his personality will make many change the channel.
This will be hilarious the jokes will be great provided he’s willing to use this opportunity to excoriate that idiot Newsweek self-hating moron. I want at least 20 jokes about being an openly gay actor on Broadway and why it’s clearly “the kiss of death” surely no gay actor can ever be successful in the theater!
I remember when this clown got his hat handed to him on the David Letterman show for acting like a dick towards Paul Schaffer. Never cared for this douchebag since then.
YAYE! He’s a genius! And just risky-risque enough to make this interesting. And not nearly as over-exposed as last year’s… ahem… Host.
Simon,
You don’t know anything about him. He is one of the most decent, upstanding, people in Hollywood, or anywhere. I directed him in a feature a few years ago. He has no pretensions whatsoever and treats everyone, from the random fan on the street, to the studio executive, with the same degree of respect, common courtesy, and humility. And he is enormously talented. An excellent choice.
Disappointing. I wonder why NPH didn’t return as host…
