He died today reportedly surrounded by friends and family at his modern art-filled Venice home in Los Angeles. He had been fighting prostate cancer since 2009. He was 74. Dennis Hopper was a Hollywood original from the start, memorable despite average looks in small roles in Rebel Without A Cause and Giant while still in his late teens. But it was the actor-writer-director’s cool embrace of the hippie counterculture and stark indictment of straight society in Easy Rider that brought him both fame and acclaim within the movie community — especially after it grossed $40 million at a cost of a mere $350K. Afterward, his very public addiction to drugs and alcohol eclipsed his immense talent, and it took him years to live down that and the failure of his next film The Last Movie. In his later years, Hopper became the consummate character actor in films as polar opposite as Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet, Hoosiers as well as Speed, directed Colors, and received two Academy Award nominations.

Dennis Hopper lived several lives, often at the same time, and brought weight to every film he was ever in, even if the rest of the picture couldn’t support it. His passion was too often his undoing off-screen, but if it’s true that an artist creates his own moral universe, then Dennis Hopper was one hell of a Big Bang.
I once asked him what was in the mask that Frank Booth was breathing from in “Blue Velvet.” He’d probably been asked it a hundred times, but he took me aside and said, with delicious intensity, “David Lynch asked me the same thing. I told him, ‘Well, he would probably have had a mixture of amyl nitrate and nitrous oxide.’ David said, ‘Amyl nitrate? Nitrous oxide? What’s that?’ I said, ‘Trust me’.”
True story.
He will be missed!
So sad. He was an exceptionally gifted man who gave his all to every thing he did and to every character he portrayed. He starred in many of my favorite movies (Reble Without A Cause, Apocalypse Now, River’s Edge, Hoosiers, Blue Velvet, Speed…) and I for one will certainly miss him
Rest in peace, Dennis Hopper.
I love you man.
enjoyed working in small capacity with him on post production for film he directed- THE HOT SPOT… sexy artful movie- great print ads… we talked about his role of texas ranger in TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 being the true “comeback” … the lead into BLUE VELVET…
Too bad. Celebrated by drinking beer and watching Rivers Edge.
The passing of a generation of actors who actually cared about acting – imagine that! A true artist – imagine that! So few real American actors left. Sad. Check out Dennis Hopper and Bruno Ganz in Wenders’ “The American Friend” – a Ripley movie. A gorgeous shambles of a movie. Apparently Ganz and Hopper got in a fistfight during the movie but then became friends by the end. Thanks Dennis, thanks for your integrity.
When I saw the picture of him at his hollywood star day, it broke my heart. I lost my dad to prostate cancer in December and Dennis looked just like him. My heart goes out to his family, it is a not a pleasant way to go and please excuse me but, “fuck prostate cancer”.
I’ll never forget the real Tom Ripley, or Lyle from Dallas, or that photographer in Apocalypse Now.
