Betty White solidified her status as TV’s golden girl of the moment by drawing big ratings for her Mother’s Day hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. But the big draw as well was the reappearances of many of SNL’s most popular comediennes – Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, and Molly Shannon. Just a reminder that these women are funny. Everyone, and musical guest Jay-Z, averaged an 8.8 household rating/21 share in the metered markets. That is SNL’s highest rating in 18 months (since the telecast on the eve of the 2008 Presidential election). And Betty only got the hosting gig because of that Facebook petition.
Here’s the double entendre NPR sketch with Betty:

Yes, where did the ladies go ? Kristen Wiig is funny, but one woman on cast is not enough. Seeing Maya Rudolph and Amy Poeler again showed how the XX is missing. Casey Wilson is still missed (and has a great singing voice, but was mostly unused last season you could have missed it). I like Wiig, but dislike how she got airtime enough to exclude the other women.
Oh, and Keenan Thompson is not funny. FF material for the DVR.
Are you high? Casey Wilson could not sustain a musical phrase to save her life. And it’s not even that I’m looking for a great singer, I’m just wanting someone who can sell a song with comedic flair. Sadly, Casey couldn’t. She might have been underused during her time at SNL, but never did I see any comedic genius bubbling up. Mikaela Watkins was the far more valuable cast member (who also got dumped well before she should have)
I COMPLETELY agree with you though that Keenan Thompson is not funny and seems to be in a show all his own. It was cute on Nickelodeon, not so much here.
Casey Wilson was far funnier than any of those new girls they brought on this year. Jenny Slate and Abby Elliott have never made me laugh.
yes bring back JAN HOOKS (luuuuve her) and NORA DUNN – the Sweeney Sisters! Tina Fey already got Jan on 30 Rock – get her back on SNL. How about Cheri Oteri as well? And that Carol Burnett idea – brilliant! Having all those former women cast members on the show was great. It really showed the lack of talent on there right now.
Thought Ms. White was terrific but the episode as a whole was a letdown. Way too many rehashes of sketches that have no business being used as many times as they have at this point. Magruber, the scared straight thing with Keenan and the dancing Latino talk show all desperately need to be retired. Even the Delicious Dish sketch fell flat after being really funny the first two times they did it.
Ive been a fan of Betty White’s from her days on “Password” with her love of her life husband and host of Password Alan Ludden.
Some of my observations:
1) The show’s writers need a swift boot (or failing that, a total re-boot). Sorry Seth.
2) Kirsten’s ability to be funny depends on the characterization and material she’s working with.
#0 I agree with many previous posters – Keenan is not funny and unlike Kirsten, cannot be rescued by his script.
I really grow tired of everyone saying that snl is awful… Firstly, it’s a bit of a cliche… People were saying this about snl of the 90′s – when “hacks” like Adam sandler, Chris Rock, Chris Farley, and David Spade were on… I wonder how those guys turned out. Since then, more horrible comediennes have been produced like will Ferrell and Tina Fey… Clearly no on talented has ever been on the show and Lorne Michaels just can’t seem to find talented young performers… Snl has never meant tired to be a mass appeal, generically funny show… These sketches are going to be hit and miss… I agree there will always be a couple sketches that fall flat – and for every couple of those you find gems of recurring characters and premises…. Lastly no one here writes a comedy show that goes live within a week… So shut up!
Scott david , I agree with Jon Hamm ( he truly needs to do more comedy) & Alec Baldwin (unsurprisingly) are great hosts. But , I also enjoyed the hosting jobs of Paul Rudd, Justin Timberlake , Zach Galifianakis, Gerard Butler & Dwayne Johnson(were not bad), and Anne Hathaway ( her Mary Poppins’ sketch is wonderful). Even, Fred Armison stated in 2008 his favorite recent host was Hathaway. It seems the writers were so inspired creatively during the 2008 election, but after Obama’s win the writers lost their creative mojo.
After the writing improves considerably , SNL producers need to pursue great & mature comedic thespians: Jane Lynch, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (former SNL actress), Philip Seymour Hoffman , Ken Jeong , Ed Helm, Stanley Tucci, Sam Rockwell, David Koechner, Terry Crews & Seann William Scott (seriously).
Please, SNL , don’t bring back flash in the pan actors like Blake Lively & Jennifer Jones ( they were both dear in headlights during their hosting stint), professional athletes, and Seth Rogen ( live performering is not his forte ) , and Paris Hilton.
What’s with all the misogynistic comments about women not being funny? I know TV comedy is a boys’ club, but SNL has gone to a ridiculous extreme ever since Tina Fey left the show. Kristin Wiig’s the only female performer who gets any play. On the rare occasion they feature other female characters, it’s usually played by a man in drag. I feel sorry for the new female cast members because they basically don’t do anything except wave goodbye at the end of the show. The writing sucks, except for Seth Myers’ Weekend Updates (and he was a superstar during the WGA strike – on the line EVERY DAY and an example to us all!) While the Betty White episode wasn’t any better than the crap that’s been passing for writing the past few seasons, it was refreshing to see so many female performers featured. Here’s my suggestion – add a few women to the writing staff, ideally with more talent than the barely post-adolescent boring, derivative guys who are working there now, and write more interesting parts for women.
I still can’t believe they made “McGruber into a movie. Why isn’t that on an episode of Seth and Amy’s “REALLY?”
I highly anticipated this show. Betty White is wonderful with an amazing amount of credit to her career. It was the TV commercial she was in, during the Super Bowl. I laughed so hard. I forgot how funny she was on Golden Girls.
She was in every SNL skit and I found them to be hilarious. Such talent for 88 years young. You can see she enjoys life and really, is’nt that what it’s all about?
