American Idol’s ninth season bowed out last night with the franchise’s lowest-rated finale. 24.2 million viewers (8.2 rating in adults 18-49) tuned in to see a parade of (mostly former) music stars, including Alice Cooper, Janet Jackson, the Bee Gees, Michael McDonald, Chicago, Alanis Morissette and Christina Aguilera, as they performed alongside Idol finalists leading to the crowning of Lee DeWyze as the new American Idol. That was down from the previous low Idol finale benchmark in adults 18-49, last year’s closer, which averaged a 10.0 rating in 18-49. In total viewers, this year’s finale was slightly higher that the first Idol finale in the summer of 2002, which drew the smallest audience to date, 23 million viewers. (The performance Idol finale on Tuesday also hit all-time lows.) With the voting results leaked earlier in the day, the main intrigue of the night was how uncomfortable the music veterans would look sharing the stage with the Idol contestants (very), how much of the finale would be devoted to the send-off of judge Simon Cowell (a lot), and how off-the-charts Paula Abdul would be in her Idol return (she wore a pink tutu!). The other networks stayed largely out of the fray with repeats except for CBS. It aired the season finales of Criminal Minds (3.1/8 in 18-49) at 9 PM, which hit a season low, down 11% from last season’s ender, and CSI:NY (2.7/8) at 10 PM, which was up 8% from last week but down 16% from last year’s finale. (Only the fast nationals for American Idol have been time-zone adjusted. Final ratings will be available later today.)

Christina Aguilera was incredible.
She really was. It was so funny to see the stark contrast between the contestants singing her songs prior to her performance…and then her blow them away with her actual vocal talent.
Agreed. So was Janet Jackson. The rest of the show suck big time.
Anyone really surprised? It’s not an actual show with a finally, it’s still going to continue and I’m going to continue to not watch it.
as was Janet Jackson. And Pink Tuto or not, Paula looked and sounded great! It was a mixture of seriously brilliant acts and complete lack of professional writing and presentation. Quite odd but if you tivo, you can get thru it…..as for the winners, no one cares…thus, the ratings dip.
overblown crap on t.v. with non-talent screaming at the top of their lungs, becoming stars without paying their dues and getting major contracts. I can’t wait for reality to end…..but I will be dead and long gone before that happens. Won’t watch, never have.
stazi
STAZI, the success of ALL reality shows makes it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that NONE of them need YOU to watch them. EVER. And when you sit back and think about how incredibly INCONSEQUENTIAL your existence on this planet is to them, WHY comment on them? They mean NOTHING to you. And you mean NOTHING to them.
“And when you sit back and think about how incredibly INCONSEQUENTIAL your existence on this planet is to them…”
To who? A bunch of contestants on a televised karaoke contest?
That was BRILLIANT!
I used to be on the anti-reality bandwagon, but I have grown so tired of the endless “I’m a damn good doctor/lawyer/cop” show retreads that sometimes reality is the only interesting programming on television.
Insipidity’s Idol routine
So ratings are losing their sheen;
It’s thrown in the towel
Without Simon’s scowl
And deviates far from the mean.
nice!
What? Inconsequential? Did I miss something? 24 million people watched… that’s hardly nothing. Not as high as in prior years, but not exactly out to pasture.
The show was awful. Why so many wide-shots and sweeping camera moves? Don’t they have telephoto lenses for a tight shot? I wanted to see the performers faces for more than a split second. The constant over-exposed wide shots to show off the tacky stage & lighting was sickening. And the vomit inducing arm waving/swinging of the front rows of staged audience has got to stop. Every performance, no matter how mellow has these extras waving their arms. Very distracting. And no disrespect to the music legends who were on the show, but why doesn’t the show get more current performers??? Oh – the Brady Bunch choreography of the Idol group performance has to go.I’ll miss Cowell.
The LA TIMES noted that the musical acts which performed, for the most part, do better on PBS Pledge Breaks! It’s an odd thing to trot out these acts who were big in the 60s, 70s and 80s on a show where today’s fans don’t know them from Adam. I guess you gotta fill up those two hours but it’s unsettling at best. And, yes, agree with the comment above that it really takes a Tivo to slug through it all.
