EXCLUSIVE: The best way to get Cannes buyers hot and bothered is to come to market with a branded property that has potentially big commercial appeal, cool elements and a reasonable budget. Here’s one that fits that bill: Andrew Macdonald’s DNA Films has made a deal with India-based Reliance Big Entertainment and IM Global to finance Judge Dredd, a 3D film that was scripted by Alex Garland, and will be directed by Pete Travis, best known for Vantage Point and Omagh. The film will be shopped at the festival by IM Global, in the first collaboration since Reliance bought a majority stake in Stuart Ford’s foreign sales company. While Judge Dredd is perhaps best remembered for the forgettable 1995 action film that starred Sylvester Stallone, Macdonald went back to the franchise’s DNA to completely overhaul the film and bring it back to its origins as the UK comic created by John Wagner and illustrated by Carlos Ezquerra. Dredd is set in a futuristic world filled with violence, and the character is empowered to act as judge, jury and executioner. Garland’s best known for writing the novel The Beach, and scripting the Danny Boyle-directed scifi film Sunshine and 28 Days Later. He also wrote the script for a movie version of the Microsoft game Halo that was scrapped by Universal and Fox. The budget’s under $50 million, I’m told. This is the kind of project that you would normally find at a studio. This one looked like it would be done under DNA’s deal at Fox, but that deal’s going away, and Fox let this one loose.

With the CGI capability, it can be done right. Stallone’s flick was not Dredd, any comparison outs the ignorant. Good luck!
I agree that the character is wonderful. I just don’t know if anyone would put the time and money in to do it right.
If someone were able to recreate the surrounding environment, and his character correctly, it would be an amazing franchise.
The problem is – they won’t. Instead, they’ll tame it down to get a non R rating, add in a few attractive stars, and create the same drivel that we saw with rubbish like Avatar.
The only good news, is that most of the public really are the unintelligent, mindless twits portrayed in the comic.
So it will probably make a big box office – just like Avatar did.
That’s a great shame on our species.
I actually don’t hate on Dredd ’95 too much (I thought it was actually pretty good up until about midway, the transport crash–and after that it ran off the rails doing over a hundred), but I’m morbidly curious to see what a new lower-budget Dredd film would look like. That said: am I asking too much hoping for a little more originality out of Hollyweird?
It could work. If they hold true to a lot of the original dark satirical elements. I don’t get the “dated” comments. It’s like hearing people saying that “westerns are dated” or “so 1960′s” A good story is a good story. and dreads got a few. If worked in with a the overthetop opression i think a it could be great.
Dredd memories: Citizen runs up to Dredd I saw the murderer he went that way. Dredd Cracks him over the head with his night stick and calls for back up to come and question the witness he just dropped while he goes in pursuit. Dredd memories: Dredd gets a call about fraud. a women has been sending people bills for her her billing. She sent people bills and charged them for it. And charged late fees if they didn’t pay. Man who complained was told by Dredd that he didn’t have a case, she did the work and he needed to pay. fun stuff…
As a hardcore Dredd fan since the second edition of 2000AD I looked forward to the Dredd movie, and in truth enjoyed it, but I felt that the removal of the helmet was a very bad idea – it simply was not in character. So much was wrong with the movie – the Angel Gang, bad-ass cursed earth mutant scum from Texas City … wiped out in under two minutes, and Dredd befriending Fergie are among two of my least favorite moments. In truth the only part of that movie that they got right was the Block War sequence – Judges, especially Senior Street Judges are machines and do their job – they do not waste time, they react as living extensions of the Law and sadly, Danny Cannon’s movie did not give us enough of that sort of thing. Even Hershey with her DUI was badly played – would a Judge allow a female perp to get behind her? No, definitely not. I for one am hoping that with Dredd II they get it drokking right this time.
I read 2000AD(dredd comic) from about 85 to 07, although I do like dredd I find the idea of another dredd film difficult, maybe my image is tainted off the last movie but i just cant see how all the essential elements of his world would work in 2hr movie. let me explain, I dont think there is one Judge Dredd story that you can tell from start to finish which introduces you to his world without having previous knowledge of back story and characters (think build up), atomic wars, cursed earth, Necropolis, etc plus there too long for a movie. So first u gotta explain the judge, jury, ex thing, then explain why hes a git, plus get a villain thats a straight forward criminal(though angel gang would work well). U couldnt just pop judge death in there and go hes from another planet! it would be to far fetched! hope they get it right.
Id like to see a more reinvented realistic movie dredd, concentrating on a changing police system, fasism and oppression, not the wackyness! but then again that wouldnt really be doing justice to the comic now would it!
I’m no Dredd or Stallone fan but I always love to watch a good movie over and over again. The ones that come immediately to mind are 3 Days of the Condor (Robert Redford), The Full Monty, Matrix, Shall we Dance (Richard Gere) the Lord of the Rings and Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School. All these movies have a punch line and some great film magic that I find facinating to watch over and over again on DVD. At every viewing I learn something more about the storyline with all the subtle brush strokes and colours that the directors have painted the film in.
In my opinion this new Dredd movie is about Man-Animal/Brute and Man-Human Being. The Man-A/B is controlled by instinct and lives by the Law of the Jungle. The Man-HB can reason and seeks out the truth before judgement. The truth sets us free and that truth to oneself no matter the initial cost is what caused the Man-God to be crucified 2000 years ago. His truth was to admit to being the king of the Jews, and Ceasar just hated competition. So to the gallows with him.
So the Death Penalty, sucks especially for all the poor innocent victims that were ‘legally’ murdered. The guilty ones were surely not any more guilty than the judges without mercy.
Well said!!!!
